The notorious Angel of Death is now a gun for hire...It's 1994. The Apartheid in South Africa has abruptly collapsed. Covert operations specialist, Sauwa Catcher — once a reluctant but lethal soldier in the fallen regime — finds herself without a country. Branded an international criminal and targeted by multiple intelligence services, Sauwa is a fugitive, alone and on the run.
An Irish paramilitary organization offers her a carry out a dangerous, hands-on assignment in exchange for money and the means to disappear.
On the gray streets of Dublin, she plots what she hopes will be her last mission while evading ruthless IRA hitmen, who will stop at nothing to see her dead, and intelligence agencies intent on publicly trying her for the crimes of a corrupt regime.
Sauwa must use her combat-hardened operational skills and razor-sharp instincts if she is to fight and survive in her shadow world.
There is only one extended action sequence, a night battle between Sauwa and an IRA unit on a beach. That’s mostly because she is simply better than everyone else in terms of experience and tactics, that while there are other conflicts, they are over pretty quickly. Her behaviour is as much about, for example, being aware of her environment and making sure she is not walking into a trap. Here, Higgins’s military experience does seem to prove useful, and strikes a nice balance between not enough explanation and over-burdening the reader with unnecessary detail. I’m very much interested in seeing where the story goes from here.
I have not read much about SA outside of author Wilbur Smith who wrote about white family sagas. The main character appears to be a victim of all the corruption and violence that went on during Apartheid. She has skills that are comparable to Beatrix rose in the John Milton series written by Mark Dawson j. I also learned of the interaction between the SA government and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The book was action-packed and very intriguing. It was a welc ome departure from the male-oriented action figures. It had a few typos but I still strongly recommend the book.
I thought this book was written really well, and it was thought provoking. I enjoyed every minute of this book. I was surprised that it was a debut, by an unknown author, yet I am happy I got to read this book. It was very engaging. You could feel sympathy for Sauwa, for all that she has been through. I can't wait to read the next book, and I hope this author continues with this character.
Excellent reading. I want Suwan Catcher to always be one step ahead of her many enemies. She did nothing to put herdelf in the position she is in. She adapts to turmoil well and does whatever is necessary to protect herself. Not unlike others in her position. Keep up the good work. I will definitely be reading the next installment of the Suwan Catcher saga.
A very new and interesting main character. With good support characters. Like the premise of a female hardass, expert with weapons and we'll trained in the spy arts. Ok to be a hit person -- not really crazy about killing cops!
