Brutal murders. An ancient treasure. A rogue state.
A young acquaintance of nonverbal communications expert Doctor Genevieve Lenard begs her to look into the disappearance of his friend. When the friend's tortured body is found in a forest outside Strasbourg, the case leads Genevieve and her team to the body of a second victim with many unusual secrets--a forged masterpiece the least surprising of them all; an ancient treasure shrouded in mystery the most intriguing.
While Genevieve is frantically searching for a motivation behind the murders, more tortured bodies are dumped in the forests surrounding the city--all connected to her young acquaintance. And the moment she discovers that the evidence points to a rogue state, her young acquaintance also disappears.
Without knowing who the killer is and why he's torturing his victims, there will be no stopping him. Or saving her friend from vicious suffering and eventual death.
Estelle Ryan was born in South Africa and spent her childhood being surrounded by African beauty, nature and diversity of cultures. Her first trip to Europe at the tender age of 16 transformed her world into a much larger place, endless in its possibilities and places to explore. For most of her adulthood she’s travelled all over the world, lived on a few continents, explored numerous cultures and still is insatiable in the quest to still the hunger for more life experiences.
She’s written for numerous international magazines, was the editor of a European lifestyle magazine and has seven romance novels published under a pseudonym. With her interest in international politics, arts, crime, behavioural psychology, criminal psychology and music, she decided to combine all these elements in her writing. And so Genevieve and the team came into being.
She is an unabashed coffeeshopaholic. Good coffee, ambience and music in the perfect combination is all that is required to turn a mundane coffee shop into her 'office'. The appropriate coffee shop is chosen depending on the mood, the weather, the type and amount of work that needs to be done, and of course the craving of the day. All of her books have been written in numerous coffee shops all over the world.
I’ve been reading this series for so long that these characters feel like people I know. The Roubaud Connection was a wonderful installment in the series. In previous books, I’ve felt some characters may not have gotten as much attention as I would have liked while other characters were featured more. In this one, I felt like all of my favorites (Phillip! I still want his back story!) had a good chunk of reading time.
Genevieve has always been endearing as we follow her struggles to live as neurodivergent in a neurotypical world. This book features more of Caelen, another neurodivergent character, and we see how individual their personalities and functions are.
The mystery is interesting as always and features some new art - Persian artifacts that are often stolen and sold to Western buyers. The crimes get a bit brutal in this one, but we don’t dwell upon the details.
The story is set up well for another one and I can’t wait to read it! I always end her books dying for the next one!
Admittedly, I enjoy this series a lot more than I thought I would :-) Again an intense topic and I have to give credit to Estelle Ryan for finding a variety of topics to cover, each a different one per volume. Amazing inspiration each time, and quirky how things can rotate one way or another around art. This volume 12 did well, even if the major element in the story was not necessarily art (paintings) in this case :-) Characters development: I saw it coming :D
I really do like these books, I think Genevieve is such a brilliant character. My only problem with the book is it seemed quite short. I started it on a trans-Atlantic flight to New York and had finished before halfway.
The latest in this series and it is brilliant. Bringing back previous characters whilst also ensuring that there is progression in the personal lives of the team. Always an auto-buy, I'm already looking forward to the next!
Yet another page turner from Estelle Ryan. Can't wait for her next book to come out. The cast of Genevieve et al are so familiar and the stories just work so well
Reliably enjoyable team members come to the aid of a young autistic acquaintance whose online geocaching mute autistic partner has gone missing. This does not end well. And leads to increasingly complex evil doings.
The Genevieve Lenard group investigates and finds others involved in illegal activity with every step. The violence here seems greater than earlier books in the series, but is mostly discussed after the fact, making it less objectionable. I enjoy Doc Lenard, her team, and the returning secondary characters. The action level is often high and compelling. I will be back for The Sirani Connection.
Probably one of my favorites although the thought of the torture those characters were subjected too was disconcerting... I'm thankful she is not too graphic.
I thoroughly enjoyed the latest Genevive Lenard book. Estelle Ryan is an excellent author. Her character development is excellent. The characters have grown and developed over the course of the series, and I feel as if I know them. I like the fact that she brings out past information bit by bit so that we learn more about each of them as we read more. These new facts are brought out as part of the plot development, so they don't feel as if they are just inserted to flesh out someone. I also definitely appreciate her dedication to correct grammar and sentence structure. This is important to make a book read smoothly. Yes, I am a dinosaur when it comes to written language, and I find that incorrect grammar and awkward sentence structure is jarring when I am reading. Too many authors seem to view these aspects of writing as unimportant, but to me it is a major criterium to my enjoyment of a book. I look forward to the next book. I have enjoyed this series immensely. In reading these books I have learned much about art and music. I also have a better appreciation of the autistic spectrum, and how it manifests differently in each individual. Thank you, Ms Ryan for many wonderful hours of reading.
The most recent in this series, which is one of my favorites. As usual, the author does a marvelous job of portraying the thought processes and challenges of non-neurotypical people. Neurotypical people see them as all part of one group, but, in fact, they are all individuals as well: they develop different coping mechanisms, and have different issues that cause difficulty -- and, they aren't all perfectly comfortable with each other, either.
In this case, a young man the group has met before comes to them severely agitated that a good friend of his -- one who is completely non verbal -- has gone missing. He was part of a geocaching group and had been out searching for a cache. But he never checked in after his last trip. When his body is found and they search his home, things they find make it clear it was more than just a random mugging.
Besides the case at hand, we also find out a bit more about the inter-relationships of Genevieve's group who, really, are much like an extended family. Overall, a very satisfying read and, as an added bonus, not too expensive in kindle format. Additionally, a couple of the early books are usually free so you can try the series at no charge.
Adore it.. perfectly executed.. keeps the flow all the way
As usual Estelle Ryan has pulled another fantastic tale out of her brilliant mind!
Perfect characterisation, it seamlessly flows, the team melding together once again to solve yet another crime with connections to the world of art and antiquities.
Thorough as always, researched to the highest level, nothing is missed. The case twists and turns requiring Genevieve's unique neuro-linguistic and non-verbal communication skills to seek the truth and follow the path of the killer. With Francine manning the technology, Colin providing his art expertise and wily cat burglary skills, Manny and Vinnie the somewhat argumentative muscle alongside the usual team from GIPN and Interpol.. the team are unstoppable even when the case appears fragmented and unsolvable they bring their individual strengths to the table and find the missing links.
Spoiler alert...
They know who but don't make the arrest as the villain vanishes.. this can only lead us to an epic follow up with the next in the series.. which I have already downloaded and is ready to go.. can't wait!!
Looking forward to book 14.. please don't stop Estelle.. I am not ready to say goodbye to Genevieve and her "family" any time soon.
The books in this series are incredibly good. This one touches on the world of geocaching, stolen artifacts, and drug smuggling. The team needs the assistance of prior characters to put all of the pieces together and solve the final puzzle. There are new relationships forming and we learn that not every member of the team has been completely honest about everything. This book offers the beginning of a new story arc with a new villain to pursue while solving whatever new cases the team is assigned. This is the first book that has made me desire an index containing screenshots of some of the information we are told Dr. Lenard and her team reference. I was a bit disappointed that the painting didn't play a larger role in the crime. It served as a device to have Frey contact the person who created the reproduction for a small piece of information that confirmed a link in the case and acted as a bridge to join the cases of drug smuggling and dealing in stolen antiquities.
I like this series. I like how the main character has grown emotionally, and how the author has chosen a character with a complicated mind and a disability that most of us don't encounter. I like the plot development, so unusual for mysteries.
I like everything except the character development of the team leader, Manny. I think his background needs explaining because he is such a verbally abusive fellow, when he speaks - which isn't often. This is the first book in the series, where he exerted his authority in handling a dangerous situation, and where his verbal eruptions were challenged. I would like to know why he has them, and why he hasn't played a greater role in each plot.
It's a great read with the solution coming together toward the end of the novel. Enough so, you must wait for the next novel to see what happens next.
The only complaint I have, and why this book is 4 stars, is the weird conversation with Claire, where they talk about her dead sister Adèle, a heroin dealer, in kind, even reverent, tones. Totally off the mark for me. The story about their neglectful parents wasn’t nearly sympathetic enough to make her a drug dealer, she wasn’t a smart businesswoman, and it wasn’t reasonable for Claire to know and not do anything to stop it. Adele was not “exceptional”.
Other than that rant, the story was right on point, great mystery, clever clues, wonderful characters. I liked Caelan much more in this book, and it was nice to have Roxy back at the end. More Jenny and Colin interaction would be nice, and a bit more between Pink and Nikki, would have made the book a bit more balanced, and longer, which I’d be all for.
This book was intense! So many emotions! Adding Caelen to any story is going to make it intense but he wasn't even the most dramatic.
Not only were people being viciously murdered, but Manny waa having issues too. Watching all of the relationships become strained as Manny held in his problem was heartwrenching. I love all of these characters like family.
I remember the first time I experienced Caelen, I was not so fond of him, but this time I felt so protective of him. All of these horrific things happening around him.
I always love how protective everyone is of Jenny. I guess I have issues. I swooned when Colin said he had something very important to protect and then said it was her.
I feel like this book was extremly good at having both high stakes situations unfold, and making sure it was character driven. I could barely put this book down!
"I only hoped that this case wasn’t going to take us too deep into the depravity of some criminal mind."
This time although there is another art piece involved, the "family of choice " becomes the focus along with a massive international drug connection that puts every member of the team at risk. Since I have not read the series in order I might go in with preconceived notions that are soon changed or dispelled. Not only did I learn about the artist Roubaud but about the many ways heroin is smuggled and how some neuro divergent people handle stress as one of them is tortured and succumbs to the injuries as others are threatened.
A known team learns about working together even if they aren't ready which stresses out a member of Genevieve's team and affects some responses. Though it all Estelle Ryan continues to present top notch thrills and drama. Highly Recommended 5/5
Estelle Ryan is consistently fine in her plotting and characterization, and I appreciate how the characters grow rather than remaining stagnant. Despite the somewhat scary situations they find themselves in, she has created a comforting world where everyone takes care of each other, and even if they have the occasional tiff, they work it out. If you're not familiar with the series, it centers around a woman who is autistic but has learned to live in the world (with appropriate adaptations) and works with a team of art insurance investigators who often also end up working with the police. This is 12th in the series (each named for a different artist), and I read it the day after it came out for the "book published in 2018" category of the Popsugar Challenge 2018.
I loved this latest book in the series so much that I went back to the first book and read all of them in order in just one week. Luckily the time included a long weekend. Ryan does a great job of blending current topics in culture and politics with her characters and adds suspense smoothly. She mentioned “forest bathing” which showed up on a tweet today as a new trend and I had already learned about it thanks to Ryan. The characters are evolving just as regular people do. For example, it was nice to read about how Nikki has a new love interest, and the changes in baby Eric. I very much appreciate all the research Ryan does, from autism to politics to geographical facts (in this particular book). She blends entertainment with teaching. Great book! I look forward to the next one.
Another wonderful Genevieve “Doc G” book. This time I found Genevieve to be a bit softer and I found that really inviting. What I mean is that her character wasn’t as black and white or sharply defined as she has been in the past. Her autism is becoming more welcoming to change and to the people in her life. The mystery underlying this book was difficult to grasp at first. There seemed to be many disparate angles that seemed to have nothing to do with each other. However, in the end, the dangling ends were all neatly tied together. I would love to see Genevieve advance in her personal life as well in future books. Perhaps her and Colin could make it official some day? Regardless, I look forward to the next adventure in Genevieve’s life.
Having worked with non neurotypical employees I love the authenticity of Ms. Ryan's work. We are all born with a personality, which can either make our lives difficult or easier. The characters that Estelle Ryan creates are easy to become attached to. Even the characters on the spectrum with autism or other challenges have such interesting personalities that the books leave you with wanting to know them more. That desire to enjoy another story also opens our understanding & perspective to the "Non Neurotypical" world. Her work is relevant, relatable and suspenseful. Her books never fail to have me on the edge of my seat right up. to the perfectly timed and very satisfying end.
I've loved watching these characters grow over the series. Another great plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. But I don't know about the whole winery in Iran thing. I thought Iran did away with wineries after the revolution and only exported their Shiraz grapes. Alcohol is illegal there though there is still moonshine or illegally smuggled bottles. Also, we Persians don't like to be associated with Arabs. We have our own unique identity and culture, just as Turks and Afghanis aren't Arab. Still a wonderfully complicated and we'll woven story line, and was great to see Caelan brought back.
Estelle Ryan always gives a multi-layered plot with the most evil of villains, and the team led by autistic Dr. Genevieve Lenard finds themselves in scary and life threatening situations in this the 12th of the series. The art insurance investigators including a (sometimes) ex-art thief, a street wise cook with a network of sources, a model gorgeous hacker, an Interpol cop, along with tactical experts and a direct line to the president of France keep growing as a team, as individuals and as a force to be reckonned with. And a history lesson on a famous painter- what more could you want? I always pre-order as each book is better than the last.
There are happenings full of clues but they don't make sense? What is happening is pretty frightening! It is a pure psycho that can do such horrendous things. He is also one step ahead, awfully smart or? ...oh my goodness this is the last book!! Hurry write another. What will happen next? Don't make us wait Ms Ryan. I have been trying to read slowly dreading this day. I ran out of books !!!?!?! I enjoy Genevieve and her friends. Love the wonderful travel descriptions. The music, and art are scrumptious! Enjoy listening to the different pieces and learning about the paintings and artists. Thank you.
As always, Ms. Ryan has written a captivating tale of mystery and intrigue. I especially found Caelan's character interesting. It was fascinating to read about the interactions between Genevieve and Caelan. She understands him but is also bothered by some of his behaviors. As someone who works with young children with special needs, I am very interested in Autism. It is very apparent from her writing that Ms. Ryan is very well-versed on the topic. As far as the rest of the book, the plot is excellent and the characters are like old friends. Loved this book!
Dr. Genevieve Leonard and her eccentric team have done it again.
Art theft, antiquities, drugs, and espionage, it’s all here. Genevieve Leonard a non-neurotypical sleuth has proven once again that every person has gifts that are useful. I have read all of Estelle Ryan’s books and am never disappointed. I even read this one in record time, less than a day. I love her character development and the edge of your seat action. I give her five stars once again. Good one Ms. Ryan.
This latest Estelle Ryan novel once more delivers the thrill expected. I love to read these stories and can only wish they were published more frequently and that they were longer. Genevieve and the group of friends she surrounds herself with have quite the mystery to solve and do so brilliantly. The terrible tortures the young people undergo moves the story along until it ends with a bang. Must read.
Great story telling with characters that are each flawed in their own ways coming together and becoming family. Learning about art, European cultures and foreign intrigue make her books an immersive experience. I now that Estelle Ryan, like other favorite authors of mine, is human and therefore churning out books as fast as I want to read the is impossible BUT I love her books so much I cannot get enough.
Fantastic!!! As per usual, I hid to finish reading my book and cannot wait to read the next book, doesn't matter who the story is about!!! I absolutely LOVE Vinnie and Jen as well as ... oh, all of them!
Unique writing style and very well researched facts. Please, never stop writing. This is good for everyone who love art, but not too "artsy" as to be boring!! Well worth the read. Wating with bated breath for the next book!!!! :):):)
I am so happy to see Genevieve and her chosen family continue to mature and grow.
Estelle Ryan's well researched stories are always exciting and the interactions of this team who care so much for each other make my heart happy. I hope the author continues to tell us about the beautiful city of Strasbourg and the incredible artworks Dr. Lenard et al. come across for years to come.
Another interesting adventure for Genevieve and her team. Caelan's friend is missing and he has come to Dr. G for help. When they start investigating they find crates of wine. Only the bottles are filled with drugs. When more young people are founded murdered they must provide protection until case is solved. Estelle has another exciting book. Looking forward to the next one.
