Emery Hazard and his partner, John-Henry Somerset, have solved their first case together. The brutal murders that rocked the quiet town of Wahredua have been put to rest. Hazard, however, finds his life has only grown more complicated as he adjusts to his new home. Living with Somers, whom he has been drawn to since high school, makes ‘complicated’ the understatement of the year.

The turmoil of living together spills over when Hazard and Somers find themselves trapped by the weather in an old mansion and, against Hazard’s better judgment, sharing a bed. Strictly as friends, of course. Just when things can’t get any more confusing, the next morning brings a worsening storm--and a murder.

Cut off from the outside world, Hazard and Somers must face a clever, determined killer who is hiding among the mansion’s guests. Without backup, they can only rely on their wits--and on each other--to survive. And as the snow falls and the mansion’s guests continue to die one by one, solving the string of murders becomes secondary. First, Hazard and Somers have to survive.

I'm a long-time Midwesterner. I've lived in Chicago, Bloomington (IN), and Saint Louis, my current home. Aside from reading and writing (which take up a lot of my time), I'm an educator.

While I enjoy reading across many genres, my two main loves are mystery and speculative fiction. I used to keep a list of favorite books, but it changes so frequently that I've given up. I'm always looking for recommendations, though, so please drop me a line if you have something in mind!

My big goal right now is one day to be responsible enough to get a dog.

Then he froze.

“What are you reading?”
“Nothing.”
“Is it the Bible?”
“For God’s sake, Ree.”
“What, then? A self-help book?”
Somers didn’t answer.
“Can I read my book, please?”
“Yeah, sure. What is it?”
The pencil popped out from between Hazard’s teeth; he exhaled slowly, shoved the book into a drawstring bag, and shook his head.
“That’s pretty childish,” Hazard said.
“Nico didn’t call you back?”
“Don’t change the subject.”
“I’m not changing the subject. You said I’m childish. There’s nothing to say to that, so I asked if your boyfriend called you.”
“You could tell me what the damn book is.”
“I bet you’re right. I bet he’s on the plane.
“It’s a damn book, Somers. A goddamn book. Unless it’s, I don’t know, some really weird porn.”
“Or maybe he lost his phone. Maybe he threw it against a wall and broke it.”
“You think you’re really funny.”
“Or maybe he’s just tired.

⭐ 4 “Emery Hazard could throw me across a field like a football and I'd say thanks” Stars ⭐

I’m someone who usually takes months to continue with a series, since I’m a master at delayed gratification and all.

Yet here I am, not even three weeks later (truly unheard of!) and ready to review the sequel to the fantastic first installment that was Pretty Pretty Boys.

Overall thoughts?

description
Or that was at least my verdict when it comes to the MCs and my undying love for them.

**********************************

Since I’m not trying to write a whole bible for entry number two in a series that spans 10+ books, I won’t mince words and get straight down to business. This review will be split into the Highlights (alternative title: A Thousand Or So Words of Devotion for Hazard and Somers), and the one Substantial Niggle (TW for a discussion of transphobia at the bottom) that detracted from my enjoyment.

Now let’s get this proverbial show on the proverbial road…

HIGHLIGHTS

THE MCs.

These two guys continue to be some of the most realistically flawed protagonists I’ve had the pleasure of reading. They are, in simple terms, a mess. And in more complex ones, they also represent the kind of intricate blend of issues and redeeming qualities we can all see reflected in our own mirrors.

Even while at their worst —and believe me, there were a lot of behaviors cataloged under the "Open Season for Smacking" category—, it was still impossible to hold their actions fully against them. How can you hate or even dislike someone when their behavior is beyond infuriating... but still completely understandable?

description
Hazard and Somers pretty much. But don't catch me pretending I didn't love them in all of their perfect imperfection.

I continued to feel like a voyeur of sorts as I read their POVs. Progressively becoming more acquainted with issues that neither of them dared speak of, yet as readers, we got the privilege of grasping and revisiting. Only instead of those wounds serving as a deterrent or an excuse to elicit pity, they were what made each of their separate and mutual accomplishments shine even brighter.

Now, onto the specifics...

My Ode to Emery Hazard (Y'all thought I was kidding with the thousand-word quip?)

Who I would sum up in a single gif with…

description
It's a cute look on him though 🤧

As expected, he was my fave once more. Compelling in how intensely he felt his emotions, sensitive to a fault regardless of his oh so hardened exterior, and as wonderfully grumpy as ever. Indeed, I’ve never before felt more protective of someone who could knock me out with a sigh.

But it was impossible not to. Anger and fragility. Resentment and devotion. Pride and insecurity. These were all warring aspects of his personality that one would’ve thought were impossible to find coexisting, yet for Hazard were what made each and every one of his words transcend the page. I felt his emotions reverberating in my chest, his breaths filling my lungs, his scars lining my psyche, and while it hurt like a motherfucker, I still wouldn’t dare trade the experience.

So in conclusion…

description
My and Somers’ overall thoughts on Hazard.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the emotionally impaired spectrum...

My Interpretive River Dance In Honor of John-Henry Somerset (the video footage was sadly lost, sorry to disappoint)

His wonderful character boiled down to a single image:

description
Although he might as well have been the main act at Cirque du Soleil with how foolish he acted, I still wanted to hug him for a majority of the book. Aggressively.

This story, and to an even greater degree than with Hazard, is where Somers' layers genuinely began to unravel for me. We get more context on his insecurities, the things that drive him to want to please and appease as a default. And we also get further looks into the ugliness he conceals, the cause behind those caustic smiles he throws around when he feels like nobody's watching.

Somers is pettiness personified, starved to the core for attention and praise (Hazard's, more specifically), and with conflicting priorities and equally selfless and selfish tendencies. Qualities that, much like with the other protagonist, only make sense in the context of his identity. He was wildly entertaining to read and empathize with, yet also had my fingers itching for some slapping.

description
Me for a large chunk of the book. It's a loving chokehold though, don't worry.

But with my thoughts on these two idiots out of the way, let's get down to the true thing we all care about…

An Update on the Slowburn (And the Importance of not Villifying Other Love Interest Outside of the MCs)

Or, in simple terms…

description
If (well done) angst and emotional turmoil is not to your taste, this entire buffet series will not be to your liking 🥴

There weren't as many developments when it comes to the romance, considering this is only book two after all, but that does not mean the tension wasn't rock-solid. Indeed, even without the need for explicit content… the pages were still sizzling.

Some more drama was included into the mix, taking the shape of other romantic prospects for each man and their subsequent pointed refusal (or inability) to admit the strength of their shared attraction.

Yet, which I found incredibly refreshing, there was no ambition to turn those other people into caricatures of vapidness, bitches and douches painted with broad brushstrokes for the reader to easily despise. Because, truthfully, that is just another manner to showcase how sometimes life can get in the way of what we truly desire. Due to personal hang-ups, timing, perceived obligations, etc.

Although just like in any other epic (and real) love story, those problems are neither a deterrent to the end result nor merely extra hoops to jump through.

As a matter of fact, you could even say it's the pain and heartbreak that will make the inevitable consummation of their union all the sweeter.

(Emotional duress: truly the spice of life fiction)

All in all…

description
The overall experience reading the book. These two were idiots but they're the lovable kind. 'Nuff said.

Moving on from the aspects I loved to bits, it is time for the one issue I couldn’t overlook…

WARNING: this might include slight spoilers. Nothing major or that will detract from the mystery, but enough to hopefully clarify my point.

Unfortunate "Did J.K Rowling help write the side characters or…?" levels of transphobia.

Now, I'm not trans myself so of course I would advise taking my opinion with a sizable grain of salt, but there was a considerable bitter aftertaste left due to the treatment of the single trans woman introduced in this installment.

Considering Ashe's overall thoughtful handling of societal issues (and LGBT+ ones more specifically), I was excited by the prospect of Columbia. She's one of the suspects that Hazard and Somers have to investigate while trapped on their forced snowy retreat, and seemed at first to be presented as a smart and driven businesswoman.

Nevertheless, it was with the continuous way in which the narration kept emphasizing her "otherness" (how angular her features were in comparison to other female characters, how broad her frame, how low and “fake” her voice, stiff her walk, etc.) that I realized the dissonance between the presentation and intent of the message.

Every time Columbia was described or brought up, there had to be an observation made about her physical appearance and overall demeanor to set her apart from the rest of the (cis) female cast. And that, paired with the unchecked hatred spewed by other characters, felt a bit too jarring at times.

While fictional bigotry is not something condemnable in my opinion (if it exists in reality, then depicting it in fiction is only fair), the way the writing kept making a spectacle of Columbia’s existence up until the very end did reek of it.

But again, that’s just my take.

I just thought it would be dishonest of me not to bring this point up as well, even if I personally loved the other aspects of the story, enjoyed the book, and admittedly look forward to continuing the series.

Even our favorite pieces of media, after all, should be open to being studied and criticized.

I enjoyed this one much more than book 1. Great relationship development between Somers and Hazard. There were a couple of really lovely scenes between them, just enough to give me butterflies.

The mystery part was ok. The same as with book 1, there were a few things that I found unconvincing when it comes to police procedure and the resolution at the end. However, I really enjoyed the setting. It felt like reading an Agatha Christie novel.

It was also a lucky coincidence that the story takes place over Thanksgiving. I didn't know that going in, so it was a pleasant surprise.

I listened to the audiobook and I also enjoyed it more than the previous one.

Well, this was a close call because I was going to ditch the series and cut a bitch if the transgender female character was treated in any transphobic way by the author, but she wasn't. That doesn't mean she was necessarily a "good guy", it just means she was treated like a normal person by the MC's. So, being the magnanimous person I am...

(I have a transgender girl in my family. I can get a little stabby if someone looks at her wrong.)

Okay, so why still the 3-star rating when I was so generous with the trans issue?
I'll tell you why, these guys are acting like little bitches for most of the book.
Grow the fuck up!

Yes, I know they have issues. You know what? We all have issues Sunshine, get the fuck over it and act like a decent human being!

And, while you're building that bridge would you mind building me a new bookshelf? Thanks, you're a dear.

Hazard, the guy who I felt so bad for in the first book because he was ruthlessly bullied all of his life has turned into a bully himself. He is constantly manhandling, punching, and threatening everyone around him. Like, dude, did you learn nothing?

Bullying hurts everyone. Will someone please think of the turtles?

And Somers, well, he's not as bad, but needs to get onto those 12 steps stat.

The setting was like Clue or something. They got stuck in an old mansion with a bunch of people for a few days when the weather takes out the only bridge to the outside world. Someone dies and then all hell breaks loose.

But, you know, this was a corporate team-building thing, so really, is it that surprising that someone dies? I've seen the corporate world. They are all just one passive-aggressive email away from mass murder in most offices.

Karen from accounting died that day, but those sandwiches were pretty good.

We have tons of suspects and creepy danger. So, that part was fun. I will continue on the series too because I am starting to feel some investment in watching these two get their shit sorted.

I knew going in that this was probably going to frustrate me to no end and maybe piss me off at times too. I wasn’t wrong.

What bothers me the most is the extreme reactions of almost every character depicted here, and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture at all regarding the victim, the murder suspects, or our two protagonists. Points to the reveal of who actually committed the crime, and points to the very complex emotions between Hazard and Somerset who still have a long arduous road to traverse ahead of them.

Again, these men are deeply flawed and though romantic feelings are present, there’s no romance yet.

At the moment, as much as I want to love this series so very much, there is no joy here for me to cling to, hence the low rating. I know it’s coming, but I don’t have the fortitude to wade through this series to get to the good parts at this point in my reading journey. One day I might come back but sadly for now, Emery and John Henry are on indefinite hold.

Wow, now that's what I call a convoluted criminal case. So many bodies and so many motives. It was very interesting and even though I had a hint of a clue, it still left me ... hmm not surprised, but impressed by how it resolved itself.
Excellent and exciting right to the end.
The relationship or non-relationship between the two is a bit exhausting. I like how it's interwoven here and plays a big role but leaves enough room for the investigation.
The sizzling is great. The incompatibilities are still difficult to understand up to this point. I would probably need a lot more insight into these two minds to really understand them.
How fortunate that I still have a few books ahead of me.

Hazard stared after his partner. It would be nice if once, just once, he had some sort of clue as to what was happening inside John-Henry Somerset’s head. 💗🧐💗

“You’ll like it. I know you’ll like it. You know what the difference is between a police officer and a janitor?”
The young man’s fingers dug furrows through his beard, and he glared down the road, doing his best to ignore Somers.
“When you’re a janitor,” Somers said, “the pieces of shit don’t talk back.”

The first book in this series, Pretty Pretty Boys, pulled me in from the very first page. Even with the lack of romance and steam, I was very intrigued...and pissed off...I was also very pissed off. I don't think I am quite over what Somers did to Hazard in the past, but I am getting there because Somers, he is a very hard person to hate. I am sure Hazard will agree with me here ;)

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1517

First things first... the books in this series can not be read as stand alones. There is a continuing storyline and so they must be read in order.

It is "Thanksgiving" time and Hazard and Somers get themselves caught in a real-life Murder Mystery, trying to figure out "who's done it"... Let me say this... it wasn't the colonel in the kitchen with the candlestick I got

These two men are really testing my patience with their non-communication!! I would like to bang their heads together and make them see the light, but... I guess hope they will get there on their own in time (hopefully that time won't take 6 books https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons)

I've got to say that I liked this second book a bit more than the first one. I am a sucker for a nice mystery/detective book which is why I have read all Agatha Christie and Poirot books I could get my hands on (and watched the tv series). I want to be a sleuth when I grow up ;)

https://www.google.com/search?q=sleuth gif

I can't wait to see what's gonna happen next and I agree with Shile....Nico has got to go !!

On to book 3 ;)

Somers knows he needs to choose: his wife and his daughter, or Hazard. But he can’t, not really. There was never a choice. He's just afraid of making it.

Hazard knows Nico is not the one he’s in love with but he could never have that one, so he settles with someone who loves him in exchange, who treats him right and makes him happy. But every day it’s harder and harder being Somers' partner, flatmate, platonic crush and omitting the ache of not being able to be more.

Reading this romance is breaking my cold heart. It does a horrible crack everytime Somers seduces Hazard with his beautiful smile, teases him without never really giving in and every time Hazard falls for it. I want to hate Somers, I really do, but I would have to understand him for that. I felt as lost as Hazard, always trying to solve the mystery of Somers' mood. These two spend half the time angry at the other, probably because they have been each other's fantasy for two decades and they are starting to get tired of fighting the ever-present attraction.

If it was just sex, if it would go away with time, then why hadn’t it gone aways in twenty years?

Nico is so good with Hazard, it hurts that they are the ones who are not meant to be, that Hazard can’t choose whom to love and that I’m dying for Somers to finally get the courage to be with Hazard, to make Hazard happy and Nico disappear. Half the time I wish Hazard would break up with Nico, because I want Hazard to be with Somers, because Somers is the one who makes Hazard laugh, even if he also makes him angry and sad. But then I see Nico, see how he has to endure being with someone who is in love with another and how there is nothing I could blame him for, nothing for me to hate him, and I don’t know what to wish for anymore.

Hazard was a slow learner, but he wasn’t that slow. The lesson was obvious: people hated whatever was inside Emery Hazard. () It was only a matter of time before Somers realized the truth too, that Hazard was…well, Hazard didn’t know what he was. But he knew that once Somers realized, things would change. Things would get worse again.

But what gives the last blow to my poor heart is how Hazard thinks there is something wrong with him and that’s why everyone seems to want to hurt him. And after everything he went through, how could he think otherwise? It’s so unfair, because Hazard is all sweet and good and loyal, able to forgive and fall in love with his childhood bully, only to destroy any chance of being together by helping him to have a second chance with his wife.

“You did a good job today”, Hazard mumbled, speaking into Somers’s side. “()You are good at everything. I didn’t know where I was going, but you always know. That’s a-that’s a metaphor, right? You always know what you’re doing. You always know where you’re going. And I’m-I’m queer, right? Always a little off.” 💔

Also, the mystery was so damn messy. I’m starting to see that’s Gregory Asher style, and I’d rather have a clear conclusion rather than two hundred things going on that makes it very difficult for you to figure out that may be my fault for staying up all night reading, which means I kinda stopped trying .

Despite my problems with the lack of information with Cora/Evie and having no real interest in the mystery, the angst with Somers and Hazard is killing me just the way I like it. I really hope it’s not going to take them the entire series to get together, so I'm crossing my fingers that the next book will give us something because I really miss sleeping at night.

“You know how I feel about you. You’ve known how I’ve felt for a long time. If you want to be with your wife, that’s fine. But you’ve got to decide. No more games.”

Book 2 of the Hazard and Somerset series. Detective mystery series. Slow burn M-M romance across the series, not yet solid in this book.

Hazard and Somerset investigate a last minute disturbance call right before Thanksgiving and end up up in a live mystery house theatre event that goes drastically wrong. Dead bodies keep turning up and everyone is a suspect.

The two still have quite an adversarial relationship that is often mean. They are learning each other’s police and investigation skills so maybe that will make them kinder to each other.
Good mystery solving.

This was amazing!!

description

Presented in a perfectly old-fashioned whodunnit setting (a remote mansion where a handful of interesting characters are isolated from the civilized world due to a severe snow storm), this story has Somers and Hazard find themselves trapped alongside their suspects when a murder case at Windsor manor makes it impossible for them to leave the crime scene before they themselves are 'snowed in'.

If this setting rings a bell, I'm not surprised. It's probably one of the oldest and most basic whodunnit settings ever.

And still, I find it absolutely perfect.

Emery Hazard and John-Henry Somerset could do ANYTHING and still make for an enjoyable read. They're such a perfect character combination that I want to fall to my knees and thank the author for bringing them to life :-))

description

I love their complexity. They are clearly drawn to each other but unlike other romances they cannot 'consummate' their attraction for each other for whatever - probably yet unveiled- reason.

I can't wait to read the next book, I already bought and downloaded it while writing this.

So good!!!

Loved the crime, I had no bloody clue who to suspect and that just made it all the more enjoyable to read. Everyone was completely batshit crazy and nothing made sense but I loved it!

This is an epic slow burn between Hazard and Somerset and I am living for it! Emotional connection and strong relationships are way more my cup of tea than pointless or gratuitous sex scenes, so I'm loving that these two are still just circling each other. The UST is immense and I am looking forward to seeing it explode, yet I'm also happy for it to take it's sweet time in happening.

Still love Hazard, still think John-Henry is a twatwaffle, and Nico really feels like a spare part, but I'm so invested in these characters now and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Slightly better than the first book, but to be honest I'm still waiting for the wow-factor to kick in...

Don't get me wrong, I liked it and I'm liking this series so far, it just seems that the hype took a detour before it will (hopefully) reach me. I usually enjoy the hell out of mysteries that give off an Agatha-Christie-vibe, but this was once again way too wordy and a bit far-fetched. And Hazard and Somerset are gnawing a bit on my nerves with their bickering like twelve-year-olds.

I still caught glimpses of what could be, though, sooo next one please. :)

Still enjoyed it. Forgot all about the macaw.

I have to say, for me, the rereading has really made me realize how much I wasn't paying attention to the mystery/suspense storyline during the first listen or maybe since I know what happens I'm picking up on things I missed?

Not sure but suffice to say, I'm enjoying revisiting the land of Hazard & Somers.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It was the MM version of Clue!

Well, the chain yanking MM version of Clue *side mouths* especially in the relationship progression department. I'm telling you, these two dudes are going to slow burn me into a slow burn catatonia. I foresee an increase in whackadoodle behavior happening in my car in the form of talking to my dashboard like it can convey my sentiments to these jokers and/or alter the narrative in some way. There could also potentially be some flailing. Fingers crossed I don't (a) get pulled over or (b) have to be evaluated due to said flailing. Because awkward.

Nevertheless, I am here for it! The mysteries are enough of a distraction to counter their microscopic relationship development.

I'm just hoping the payoff will be epic otherwise I'm going to be the butthurtedest in the entire kingdom of ButtHurt.

Tristan James is still doing it for me with his acting, emoting and varying the voices. I don't even have to pay that close attention to know it's either Hazard or Somers talking!

Recommend to thriller/mystery fans.

**3.5 sexually frustrated🌟🌟🌟**

Initial Thoughts Before Reading Book 2:

Given what I know now about this beloved series, I went into reading book 2 optimistic, and hoping that there would be at least some sweet/romantic moments between my darling grumpy Hazard, and golden boy Somers...and what do you know? GA delivered a few cute moments between these two that I now treasure like a starved peasant😭😭 Give me all the crumbs GA😍

“Ree,” Somers said, and then he stopped.

“I like it when you call me that.”
😍😍😍😍

Sweet Moments and Relationship Development:

My favorite thing about book 2 of this series was the many cute moments and the relationship development between these two. Yes, sadly my babes are still not together *internally sobs*😭 but the longing, desire, the deep stares, their internal dialogues about one another, their snow kiss, Somers's "massage", them sharing a BED😍 and they cuddled *dies of happiness* made up for them not being together yet..keyword being YET.

I also adored how jealous, petty and savage Somers was in this book😂 he took a jab at Nico every chance he got lol. From Nico's clothes being from Value Village to calling him an ultrasound i-💀. We love a petty Somers.

All in all, the sexual frustration and thirst was real! Yes, I enjoyed it a lot. I love when GA gives me false sense of security🤧 only to sike me with that ending😤.

Not a fan of the plot

Sadly, I was not a fan of the plot for this book. It reminded me of the movie Murder Mystery starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler lol.

Don't come for me.

I did feel for Columbia but her actions made it kind of hard to sympathize with her. The rest of the characters I did not care for.

The Mayor is super sus tho...I feel like his story is just getting started. Looking forward to seeing what his role is (as a shady character) in the coming books.

I take it back when I said I liked Nico..he really does act like a fetus sometimes. So unbecoming of the Nico we met in book 1.

Also, that ending sir? Why do you do me like this?😢 its okay tho I know all this suffering will be worth it, eventually.

Overall Opinion:

Even though I did not enjoy the plot as much as the first book, I did enjoy this read. I enjoyed reading about these two idiots longing for one another and even the few intimate moments that we got once in a blue moon😭😭. I will say this tho..GA only you can make me like slow burn. I am committed to reading this series even if they aint together still in book 10😢🤧. That is how much I adore these two. If you see my many updates regarding these two on your feed I do apologize in advance ❤🙈

Should you read book 2? Si, por favor🙃

Okay ... I inhaled this and though I meant to skim I didn't. I was caught up in the mystery, some of which I'd forgotten but primarily I was invested in the tug of emotions between H&S.

I also feel like I should apologize to Emery. I was seemingly on a high horse when I did my first read or I've become wiser. The emotional tumult Hazard has been assailed with since returning to his hometown is overwhelming to say the least and he's now living with the man he's lusted after & hated for fifteen years, can you imagine? When they find themselves stranded, in a forced proximity type of situation, and Somers is being more than flirty it's totally logical for Hazard to lose his cool.

Somers's internal battle ain't pretty either. I feel for him.

I can see more rereads in the future but I won't bore you with it. I'm a teensy bit obsessed with these two. ❤️❤️

****FIRST READ/LISTEN 10/28/19 --10/30/19
***4.5***
“Somers didn’t do anything but walk away with that goddamn smirk burning like a very long fuse on a very big bomb.”

Okay Gregory Ashe, I see you and raise you comfy lounge pants, bunny slippers, oversized sleeping T, salt & vinegar chips, and Cheerwine soda. I'll wait you out.

Pretty Pretty Boys covered from October 24th [date of Hazard's first day at work for the Wahredua P.D., after having been gone from his hometown for fifteen (15) years] to November 2nd. Book two, Transposition, hurtles us all the way to November 21st, on the eve of Thanksgiving. Hazard and Somers have settled into being roommates and partners at work. On the surface everything is spiffy, mostly because they're men and avoid speaking about anything of substance. Not surprising. I know quite a few guys in RL like this. Super annoying, but true to life.

Almost at the end of the day they get a call which causes them to be sequestered in a mansion with a killer(s), and no escape due to a paralyzing storm. It's a sort of a 'locked-room' mystery, with interesting twists and turns, some of which may be obvious to the avid mystery reader or not, but overall fairly well executed. However the purpose of this tale is to move along the Somers & Hazard uphill relationship, one weighed down by their individual and shared histories.

Can I say right now how much I love John-Henry Somerset, and that your enjoyment of this will hinge on your tolerance of grade A a**holes, dicks, and general douches, by which of course I mean Emery Hazard? I understand where he's coming from, I do. As a matter of survival he's had to create a hard emotional shell to go along with his physical toughness, that who and what Somers was during their adolescence isn't something easily forgotten, sloughed off or set aside, but still ... let's just say that I wasn't entirely sorry for what happened in the basement. *shrug*

As a recap for those who may be tuning in now, these can't/shouldn't be read as standalones. They're a separate case per book, but there's an overarching mystery/case and Somers & Hazard's relationship running throughout.

I'm not going for 5 stars because I wanted to smack Hazard one too many times, and his attitudes sometimes belied his vaunted reputation as an excellent detective. In fact, sometimes, his pigheadedness ruined perfect investigative avenues.

I did the audio too and Tristan James will make you happy.

*Just an updated rating. Three to four stars. I’ve been thinking about these two a lot lately because a bunch of people are reading them. And I realized I needed to change my rating on some of them. Because nobody gets in my head and my heart like Ashe guys. And these two are, in my opinion, his best. (Sorry North and Shaw. You are a super close second.) I just love them. So it’s ok if I don’t enjoy the mysteries in this first series as much as the later ones. It’s ok to give an extra star for character love and development. I can make my own rating rules. 😂**

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars
5/5 Sexual Tension and Pining
🦥🦥🦥🦥🦥/5 Sloth Slow Burn

Pretty much, everything I wrote in my review of book one applies to this one. (

Link to book one review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

With a few additions.

Things that didn’t work:

There were less grammatical errors and less timeline inconsistencies but they were still there. The mystery was slightly less convoluted than book one but never really gelled for me. Although, it did have kind of an Agatha Christie, “And Then There Were None,” vibe going on. (Which is one of my favorite mysteries ever.) Like book one, most women characters were all cliche and awful. And adding to that, I was displeased with how the transgender character was written.

AND YET...

Emree “Ree” Hazard and John-Henry “Somers” Somerset continue to burrow their way into my heart. If I was rating on purely the relationship side of this book, my rating would be higher!

I love these two complicated men. I love the evolution of their relationship. It frustrates me to no end but at the same time, I absolutely love it. The UST is painful, the longing and chemistry give me butterflies. The pining is a delicious torture. It really is the slowest of slow burns. But for me it feels natural because of their complicated past. Plus, it’ll make the payoff even better. 🥰

So I will move on to book three. I’m hoping the things I have problems with will get better. If they don’t, I’d probably still keep reading. Because I sure am loving Ree and Somers. 😍

**Just a note for all Hazard and Somerset books. They are more considered gay fiction not romance. So if you are looking for lots of sexy scenes, you might be disappointed. There are some quite steamy moments but they are not overly graphic and do not happen frequently. However, to me, they were still incredibly hot. The UST, pining and feels are through the roof. But I just wanted to put this out there in case it’s not what you are looking for. 😀**

I didn’t enjoy this mystery as much as I did the mystery from book one. The atmosphere of the Windsor estate as well as everyone’s overall shadiness started getting to me, and by the halfway point I didn’t care who was killing who, as long as Hazard and Somers made it out alive.

The sexual tension between them was ridiculous, and it kept spilling over into their everyday interactions. Whether it manifested as teasing, arguing, or drunken confessions of desire, I was there for all of it. I knew that Hazard was attracted to Somers, but him admitting that he has actually loved him for the last 20 years caught me off guard. I didn’t realize he felt that strongly, and it made me want to see them get together even more.

And poor Nico! I really like him and I feel awful that he is in this obviously doomed relationship with Hazard because I know that he truly cares about him, but I couldn’t help laughing every time Somers took a jab at him. Whether it was picking on his clothes, calling him an ultrasound (like, wtf was that!! 🤣🤣🤣), or literally smiling every time he made Nico jealous, my evil ass was enjoying it every time.

I wasn’t happy with how the book ended, but I didn’t dislike it. Those two have a long way to go, but I can tell that it’ll be worth it in the end. 4 stars

5 Stars!

Another hit in this series for me.

I really love a good dinner murder mystery that turns real. So many killings in this one with an interesting group of characters as the suspects.

Somerset and Hazard are the most entertaining non-couple I have come across in a really long time. The snark is strong with these two. So is the sexual tension. It only grows as these two men have to share a room that only offers one full size bed.

The murder mystery was a real thinker considering there were so many possible suspects. I went back and forth between two of the characters that I thought was the killer and in the end I was right. I don't think it was too obvious considering there were so many story lines between the characters and the man murdered. He was a nasty piece of work, especially towards, Columbia.

I thought I would for sure be missing the romance I usually enjoy with my detective books, but I have to say that I pretty much loving this series so far. I am completely enthralled on where this is going. I can't wait for the moment these two do come together because if they throw this kind of heat with just looking at each other, I can only imagine the explosions that will happen when they finally collide.

On to the next one!

Happy reading dolls! xx

3.5 - I do love a good old house party murder mystery and this fulfilled any Cluedo playing desires I may have harboured over the years. I enjoyed the whodunnit case and the general vibes more than the previous book but I still didn’t love this and I’m hoping it’s because it’s early in the authors writing repertoire and things will keep evolving. I didn’t enjoy ANY of the side characters which made it hard to be overly involved in the mystery - was hoping they would all just stop talking and die already.

As with book one this has a fair amount of homophobia and misogyny but I was prepared for it this time. The slow burn vibes continue to be reeeeeeaaallly slow. Hazard has a new boyfriend - Nico from book one. Somers is still married to Cora. I’m settling in for the long slog with these guys but there was some teeny tender moments between them that gave me hope.

Listened on audio, narrated by Tristan James.

TW - cheating as well as other murdery things.

to start with, i definitely have to say that i enjoyed this book WAY more than the first one.

i had trouble getting immersed in the case in the first book and that dimmed my enjoyment quite a bit, but this case was actually quite fun to try and sort through. they got stranded in a remote mansion because of a snowstorm and OF COURSE there was a murder. they basically had no help whatsoever and were fully surrounded by lots of suspects, who slowly started getting killed one by one. the best part about this whole getting stranded thing though…?

THEY HAD TO SHARE A BED!!!!!

that’s right, you heard me. the good ol’ bed sharing trope honestly never disappoints does it?🤪

honestly, these two are ANNOYING AS HELL though. i love them, but truly, they are both frustrating ME and EACH OTHER. the frustration just never ends.

the mutual longing, feelings, desire & attraction is pretty painful to be honest. i personally love suffering, but this series is definitely NOT for people who want instant gratification.

in this book we learned that somerset is PETTY as hell LMAO 💀 this man truly grew on me in this book though. he seems like such an unbothered, smiley guy, but underneath the surface… he’s BOILING.
his desire to please hazard is still very much present too. he also has some of the greatest insults ever, for example: “that fucking goblin”, “you’re being a gaping asshole about this”, etc… truly amazing use of words.

hazard is STILL my favourite though. this man is SO feral, he literally starts growling when he’s mad 🤣 he will also NOT deal with your bullshit, this man truly does not give single fuck!!! he literally starts threatening suspects the minute they annoy or attempt to lie to him 😭😭 i swear this man can be SO sweet and almost shy at times, but he legit has a whole other animal side to him. i adore him.

(i wish he would break up with nico though, let’s be honest, that poor guy doesn’t deserve this 👀)

overall, i am totally loving this series!! the sexual tension and unresolved feelings are killing me though… (y’all should have used that damn bed @ hazard & somers… i’m just saying…)

4.5 stars, and oh my GOD, I’m sure I’ve been this frustrated at some point in my life but I’m finding it hard to recall when right now. 🤬

I don’t get it. Well, I mean, I do but I don’t understand why the whole issue is?

And though the mystery was kind of weak here *though part of something bigger*, the writing is excellent and the chemistry, characterizations and UST, while genuinely and COMPLETELY maddening, are damn well done. I can’t even say I like it but it’s undeniably compelling.

And I find myself quite annoyingly hooked. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I have to know.

“You shouldn’t read books like that!” I was told last night when I closed my kindle after finishing the second instalment in this series with a very audible outburst of frustration and heart break.

Ha! Little does one know. I may have felt just ‘moderately aggrieved’ (understatement of the year) at how book 2 ended, but OH. MY. Gregory Ashe held all my feelings in the palm of his able writing hands and put me through the emotional wringer in a roller coaster of ups and downs.

So what have we got here?

.) Emery Hazard:
Finding out what makes him pull out his cold asshole behaviour shredded my little heart into even tinier pieces.

All those years of being hurt, all those years of being helpless had given birth to something feral inside Hazard. Most days the wildness was caged and kept in darkness. Now though - the cage was wide open.

And the obvious lesson was: people hated whatever was inside Emery Hazard.

It is very clear how Emery feels about Somers, and the attraction is getting stronger the longer they are together, but there is more keeping them apart than pushing them together.

He didn't want to go to Nico's- he didn't want to leave Somers. What he wanted, what he'd wanted for almost twenty years, was standing right in front of him-

And as Emery brushes his real feelings under the carpet, he detaches himself totally from emotion, not allowing himself to feel at all. Painful! So painful!

.) Somers:
The issues he’s got to address are so plentiful, it is no wonder he is emotionally all over the place: ... his insecurities about not being a good cop, of ‘living up to expectations’ something he has transferred from his father to Hazard),

...his confused attraction to Emery

Choose, Hazard had said. Somers had to choose. And just how in the world was he supposed to do that?

still mingled with the guilt from the past,

The answer (to why Hazard is behaving like an asshole) swam up at Somers out of the darkness: because Hazard still hated him. Nothing was ever going to change. Nothing Somers could do would ever mend the past.

... his ongoing on/off relationship, his drinking.

Still, he has no idea that he is dragging Emery through hell every time he just lets ‘slip’ (when he is drunk) that he wants him.

Every time these guys have a tender moment (and yes, there are two very memorable heart rending scenes) where their true feelings just peek out underneath the facade they put on, something happens that puts the invisible wall between them straight back up again. Yelling with hurt and frustration was definitely part of this programme.

.)the Agatha Christie style plot:
We get a huge old mansion house, the mother of all snowstorms, a crowd of vitriolic people, one murder after another, mysterious strangers and two detectives cut off from the world trying to solve all this. Needless to say that the situation is tense, dangerous and more than deadly.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if Miss Marple had turned up with her knitting at one point. (Did she actually knit? XD ) Thoroughly enjoyed it!

.) Gregory Ashe just knows what to do with words. I adore his writing, not only for all the feels he elicits out of me, but his descriptions of the snowstorm, of the house etc, his imagery are an absolute joy.

For that alone I would have to give 5 stars. And the fact that I was seriously considering creating a new shelf called *made me tear my hair out*.

4.5***** stars

A fun little game of Mystery Dinner only it was not so funny - because the dead bodies are piling up in that old, big house somewhere out in nowhere.

And in the midst of a can’t-escape-snow-storm there is only one bed for Hazard and Somerset to sleep in while there’s a murderer on the loose - only it wasn’t as juicy as it might sound. There was only sexual tension and a lot of frustration between the two.

… and fuckups, man were there fuckups. Somers, passed out drunk (again) while Hazard was battling a life and death situation alone. And Hazard kept on kissing the man he cannot have, despite having a boyfriend. I was so annoyed with both of them!

Really, I’m rooting for these two, but I felt so damn sorry for Nico, Hazard’s boyfriend. He doesn’t deserve to be in love with a man who’s pining hard for another. I really despise Hazard for knowingly tagging Nico along.

Ugh, they really still have a long way to go. And they are both so fucked up. Man, Gregory Ashe is not taking it easy on the romance lovers here. But at least the mystery lovers have a field day with this. What a ride, loved it. I was freezing along with them.

4.5 Stars ⭐️

Audiobook Narrator: Tristan James: 4.25 Stars ⭐️
*Note: Tristan James has really grown on me and now I’m considering listening to this whole series. I had only planned on listening to 2&3 because they are included with my Audible subscription but I have a lot of credits just waiting to be used. 🎵🤔

This read like a modern Agatha Christie novel and I loved it. This book deserves a great review but if I take the time to do that then I can’t start the next book and I am wayyyyy too into this series to stop right now even though it’s nearly midnight. 😂

Can I just say though that the ending tore me up inside? 😭😭 I mean, I get it but my heart broke 💔 just a little bit.

Also, this is the slowest of slow burns and I’m surprised how much I like it because I prefer high steam books. Part of why I was hesitant to start these ongoing romance crime stories is because I thought I’d be bored without all the romance and sex but these are written so well and the characters are just so compelling that I’m utterly hooked. Besides, their inner thoughts are all about each other so it gives me all the pining I just live for. I love, love this series so far.

The ’case’ in this one was a little better, a creepy house in the middle of nowhere and a group renting it to play a murder mystery. Our boys respond to the neighbor’s call about a shooting and they get stuck there because of the storm. Murder and mayhem ensues. Tropes🙄: one bed. Close proximity. YEP, it’s my least favorite but just like in the first book, Hazard and Somers have converted me😩🧡.

The longing, teasing and UST is glorious🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 sometimes they make me want to slap them both, for how they’re treating each other (especially stupid Hazard) poor Nico!

One star burned the freak off, for how the book ended. I’m not in the mood for the next one but I AM OBSESSED, PEOPLE.

4.0 stars ...

The suspense/murder mystery was top-notch! Five stars! And that's what I'm here for.

However, I don't like these people ... and that's a problem. Full star off for that ... prob'ly should be more. Hazard, Somers, Nico, the entire police dept., the mayor, etc. ... don't like any of them.

I'll keep going for the murder mystery plots ...
until I just can't take any more of these characters.
There are tons of other murder/mystery/detective series. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a tale as old as Agatha Christie. But who doesn’t love a good old fashioned whodunnit?

It’s the week of Thanksgiving and all Hazard wants to do is spend it with his new boyfriend, Nico. Yeah, don’t get me started on the wrong boyfriend situation.

But then Hazard and Somers get caught up in a snowstorm and find themselves stuck in a mansion with you guessed it, a cast of shady characters. All of whom work for a curmudgeonly bigot of a man who turns up dead.

Never being well loved the people who worked for the victim are not only not upset, they’re almost celebratory. In essence making every single one of them a suspect.

While I enjoyed the mystery and all the sleuthing. I was living for the banter and all the yummy tension between our fair detectives. Especially when they found themselves sharing a smallish bed and Somer’s losing more and more clothes.

But of course it can’t ever be that easy when we’re dealing with the slowest slow burn in all existence. Eat your heart out Mariana Zapata.

It’s obvious that they both want each other but while Somers is all in, especially when he’s a few sheets to the wind. Hazard is afraid of losing the partnership they’ve been build from below the ground up.

I get it, I do. And normally I’d miss the smut but honestly the tension is just so goddam riveting that I feel totally content. As for how long my patience will last? That’s anyone’s guess.
