1231 A.D. - After a nasty skirmish along the England/Scotland border at Bog Wood, a badly wounded knight has crawled off to die. As women from the Clan Scott fan out across the battlefield to collect the spoils of war, one woman breaks off from the pack. She is sickened by the tradition of stealing valuables off the dead and runs off to hide. In her hiding place, however, lingers the badly wounded knight. The young woman is frightened at first but she tends the knight and saves his life. Little does the Lady Jordan Scott know that she has just saved the life of the dreaded English knight known to her people as The Wolf…. Several months later, peace is proposed along the border. An English groom is offered to a Scots bride. The Lady Jordan Scott is that bride and her groom is the aged and powerful Earl of Teviot, John de Longley. When Lord de Longley sends his mighty and hated army to collect his new bride, the captain of the army personally retrieves Lady Jordan. When Jordan looks upon the fearsome English knight, she realizes there is something oddly familiar about his voice. When the man finally reveals himself, she sees that it is none other than the man whose life she saved, Sir William de Wolfe, the Scourge of the Scots. William has never forgotten about his Scots angel. As he escorts her back to Northwood Castle to wed his liege, each passing minute sees him fall more hopelessly in love with her. Jordan comes to know the man beyond The Wolf of legend, and so the love story begins. Join William and Jordan in a tale of true and utter devotion, of a love that bleeds beyond the boundaries of Scots and English, and where loyalty, friendship, and family bind them all together in this uncertain and political world. These are the dark days of dark times, but in the midst of a treacherous world of secrets and hatred, William and Jordan share a love that is only dreamt of.

DNF at 53%. I feel even though I didn't finish the book I can write a review since I did read what was the equivalent length of two other books. So here goes....

I do not understand all these 4 and 5 star reviews. Neither the H or h is likable, the editing and plot holes are horrendous and there are just pages and pages of telling how all the characters feel while doing every little thing. Jordan is an immature twit, her cousin is annoying and William is just not the alpha he is supposed to be. Someone tries to kill Jordan and they think they know who it was but no one follows up on it? Then when William does discover who it was he does nothing about it? Seriously? Maybe that comes much later in the book but instead I was forced to read page after page of hearing how beautiful and perfect Jordan is. Still I wanted to know what happened so I started skimming and that was working for a while then I got to a part where William was going to murder a defenseless person to protect their secret. Enough is enough. These people are jerks and I don't care what happens to them. Oh and this book IMO is not "epic". I love a good long book when they are well written and keep my interest, not make me cringe and roll my eyes.

DNF AT 29%. No rating as I did not finish the story.

This is my second unsuccessful attempt to get through The Wolfe. The first attempt I tried to read and the second was to listen to the audio. Both left me wanting to pull my hair out.

Reading...I hate to admit it but I'm an impatient reader. Some of the best and epic reads out there, left me frustrated with the excessively descriptive passages. I don't need to know minute details, I want a quick and clear description to move me forward so I can get to the plot and characters development. With nearly 900 pages to get through, it was definitely more descriptive. After hours and hours of reading, I didn't feel like the percentage read moved at all which was disappointing.

Listening...getting the speed right was almost impossible. The narrator is very slow but if you speed up too much you lose the breaks in between sentences. It became one long sentence with only a small change in tone here and there. I couldn't tell when the characters changed or if the narrator even attempted to bring them to life. Slowing the speed down to 1.5 made it easier to listen to but made a very long book feel even longer. The narrator is an older gentleman, and listening to him narrate the sex scenes was a wee bit awkward. If I had to hear him (as Jordan) say "Sweet Jesu" one more time I was going to lose it. There is no way I could have made it to the end.

The storyline had the potential for greatness but I was never fully invested. I felt that such a loyal and trustworthy knight wouldn't have caved into lust so quickly and easily. The heroine was too immature for her age. If she had been as young as a lot of potential brides of that time, I would have accepted her thoughts and actions as appropriate. It was hard for me to fall in love with William and Jordan as a couple. It was all just a wee bit off and I never really settled in.

Unfortunately, there won't be a third attempt as I am done.

Very good! One of the author's better books. Only negative was that it was too long. The book gets better halfway through. The ending was great! I didn't want it to end.

Brotherhood, love and loyalty.

Original Review:
This is, without a doubt, a truly amazing read! I was in medieval heaven. This book was written by Kathryn Le Veque over 20 years ago, by hand. The author tried many times to have it published, but no one would touch it because it is 909 pages long. Kudos to Ms. Le Veque for not giving in and keeping the integrity of this fabulous work intact. Because every single page and element is important to the overall story line.

I just LOVE this book! Never boring. Never a lag. Fantastic cast of characters. The best hero EVER! A terrific heroine. Never once was I bored or wanted to rush through pages to get to the good part. Every part was good. And, the pages just fly! I'm so very pleased that nothing was cut out to make it an "average" book, page wise. Every bit of what happened was important and I relished and cherished all of it. The Epilogue was perfect!

Latest Re-Read Review:
Since I first read this book years ago, many more books (sons, sons of friends, etc.) have grown from this original story. The central characters here have never been matched in their significance and in their legends and have made noteworthy appearances in many subsequent books. There is even a whole Kindle World (de Wolfe pack) which has sprouted from this book. The relationship among the tight little group of knights is fabulous to read and key to the themes of brotherhood and loyalty. Even Jordan and Jemma (the two heroines), who at times were immature and naive, were endearing. Believe it or not, it is almost non-stop action. There is never a lag. And, even after having read it EIGHT times, I still love it, will re-read it again and will undoubtedly end up with that silly smile on my face at the end. I just love it. It is my "go to" book when I need a guaranteed good read. It is, without a doubt, my very favorite book and Sir William de Wolfe is my very favorite hero/book boyfriend. It has had a permanent place on my Kindle since that first read years ago. And, there it will stay!

This was a really long book but it never felt long. More than 900 pages and I never felt the need to skim or skip because something interesting was always going on. The descriptions were ideal for a book this size and I don't think anything could've been left out to make it shorter without affecting the storyline. We don't get bogged down with details but there are enough descriptions so we feel we're right there with the characters in medieval England/Scotland.
The heroine, Jordan, had a few big TSTL moments which I think worked out ok in the end because she was borderline too perfect. Her mistakes somehow made her more human and less goddess-like.
The hero, William, is one of the sweetest I've ever read about in a medieval romance. He's a tough warrior feared by everyone but he's also innately good, loyal, and fiercely protective of his loved ones. The secondary characters were great, including his small group of knights and Jordan's cousins.
There is a great HEA and a very unique epilogue.

Get lost...in the power of love, friendship, and loyalty.

"If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world." -C.S. Lewis
This is how I feel about books...I read them to lose myself in another world. A world we can not experience here and now. The story The Wolfe is the kind of book that takes you to another world so completely you almost have withdrawals coming out of it.

It's a epic love story of a English knight called the Wolfe and the Scottish lass that saves him. Their love is so true and strong that it can and will span lifetimes. William the Wolfe is so legendary people fear and love him with equal measure. The villagers chant his name with love and his enemies spit his name with fear and venom. But underneath the fierce warrior is a heart of such strength and love that it can bring tears to a readers eyes. Jordan, is a feisty scottish lass that hates death and war. She's beautiful inside and out; who also like the Wolfe has a inner strength of steel. She is no spoiled princess, but she's no simpering miss either. A perfect combination for a heroine everyone can and will love.

This book isn't only about the main characters though, it has a whole slew of other characters that a reader loves almost as much as the H/h. William the Wolfe has a following of knight's so delightful thats its worth reading the book just FOR them. It's a very long story, but thank goodness it is...because you hate to say goodbye to them.

I don't want to give anything away, you MUST read the book for yourself. I should also mention this story isn't only about love. It's got villains, court intrigue, battles, and death. Everything a great medieval romance should have!!

Take a trip into the past and remember life's true treasures...love, friendship, loyalty, and family.

Dany - per RFS
.

Buona Lettura

This is the first book in the "de Wolfe Pack" series. Know that this book is about 900 pages long. My thought on the length of this book at first when thinking about reading the book I thought there would be a lot of filler...something drawn out forever. SO I was slow to jump on board with this book. But forged ahead and started reading this book. I found that it was a really good book that did not feel to be a 900 page book. This book beside the main two couples William and Jordan (lady) also included the story of several other couples. I found that I was wrapped up in their story too. It also had a lot of story to tell and it did feel right to be such a long book.
William the Wolf is English and has been fighting the Scots for a long time. But the Kings has called for a truce and to do so he feels he needs to tie the English Lord with a Highland Scott Lass who is the daughter of Thomas Scott a Highland Chief. So William is captain of the army for the Earl who has been told to marry Jordan. William is set to go and bring Jordan to The Earl.. When William first sees Jordan they her realizes that she is the Scottish Lass that save his life last year. Another thing William finds is that he has started to have feelings for her but he is bound to take him to his friend the Earl. Jordan too knows it is the fighter she saved and has started to have feelings for him. This starts the emotion, great, hard love ship that I was so glad to have read!

3.5 stars.

I've been on a wee historical romance binge lately. I'm wondering if I hadn't read so many books of the same genre, if I would have rated this a bit higher. I just couldn't help but compare. The story was also set in 13C Scotland and England. It was loaded with burly alpha males and headstrong women. This was recommended to me on our Facebook page as historical Rock Chick. Can I see that? Yep. Although I think that Ransom, by Julie Garwood was a little more like that and I read it a couple of weeks ago.

Le Veque certainly has a gift for telling an engaging story. There were many moments where I was on the edge of my seat, or smirking, or completely caught up in the sexiness. Unfortunately, this story was really long and I felt it. In some ways, I give the author a lot of credit for that. I've seen a trend lately where authors seem to stretch out the story across 3 books when it could have easily been one longer story. With this book, you get the whole story. You won't feel that the story is left unfinished. I just felt like I was on a bit of a roller coaster with this. I would be LOVING it and then I'd be checking the percentage to see how much longer I had left. Then I'd be LOVING it again and then it would lose me. I wish the author would have taken a bit of time to tighten it up and run it through the editor another time. There were quite a lot of errors and I wish that when authors obviously put so much heart and soul into writing their stories, they'd take the time to make sure it was accurate. I'm really not that picky about editing unless it really stands out. Sadly, this really did, at times.

Everyone I know who has read this book, has enjoyed it. A few have loved it and I can see why. The hero is very likeable. I completely bought into his love for Jordan and some of their moments together were unbelievably sweet and touching. I found the heroine to be a little frustrating at times and that was part of the reason why I wasn't immersed in this novel 100%.

Jo Ann, thank you for the recommendation. I wish I loved it as much as you did but I'm not sorry that I read it. I love getting recommendations from fellow readers. Hopefully others will love this as well.

OMG!!! I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of the story and the conflict between England and the Scottish clans and the battles they fought. However, the main attraction of the story is the love between William De Wolfe and Jordan Scott. Now, I must admit although I really loved Jordan and her wit and spunk, she tried my nerves here and there with her unwillingness to listen to De Wolfe and his knights. I mean really, she acted as if there wasn't danger going on all around her. She would just run off or throw some type of nonsense hissy fit or pouting session when she didn't get her way and I just thought that she was bratty at times. On the flipside, I thought the knights,(De Wolfe included) acted like because she was so beautiful and feminine and soft, blah , blah, blah that they just couldn't be angry with her about anything, even when she was clearly in the wrong. However, those issues aside, I really enjoyed the story, the action and the love that De Wolfe and Jordan came to share. More importantly, I enjoyed how their love allowed them to show a great amount of loyalty to one another and pride in each others' achievements and character strengths,as well as patience when dealing with each others flaws and/or weaknesses. I also liked how the author made the secondary characters in the story just as likeable and strong; witty and smart. She also did well with setting the stage for other characters to find their mates, potential mates or potential storylines for future books in the De Wolfe series and/or other novels.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and Le Veque's quick, witty writing style. This book has almost 900 pages and the dialogue and author's style of writing made the book fly by for me and seemed like way less. I didn't want the story to end and will start the sequel, The Serpent very soon.

Although this book is of epic length at 909 pages, the timeline of the story is not, with the first 60% of the book taking place over a period of just a few months. Lady Jordan Scott is the only child of Earl Thomas Scott, Laird of the Scott Clan and a fierce opponent to the British in their ongoing border wars. In an era where women had limited freedom and were expected to be obedient and subservient, Lady Jordan is the exact opposite. She is fiery, stubborn, fiercely loyal, kind hearted, protective of those she loves and not afraid to speak her mind or ignore a direct command. Anyone who enjoys a strong heroine in their story will not be disappointed by Jordan and there are plenty of times you will sympathize with the men charged with her care. I love that in a time where sons are a father’s pride and joy that Thomas Scott loves and dotes on his daughter. She is a true light in his life and not cast aside because of her gender. When a directive is sent from King Henry III that Thomas Scott must provide a bride to secure a peace alliance along the border with John De Longley, a British Earl and border lord, it is with a heavy heart that he offers up his own daughter. Lady Jordan accepts her fate but is taken by surprise when Sir William de Wolfe, Captain of De Longley’s army, is sent to retrieve her and she recognizes him as the injured knight she secretly provided medical aid to when he was fatally wounded in a border skirmish months prior. An attraction sparked by an accidental meeting on the battlefield now has time to develop as William accepts full responsibility for Jordan’s safety.

I have said it before, there is no better place to find espionage, suspense, conspiracy, cunning, deceit, and illicit affairs than in the courts of the middle ages. Attempted murder, lies, sex and war are just a few of the events that play out within weeks of Jordan’s arrival in the De Longley household. The camaraderie between William and his knights provides plenty of sarcastic humor and occasional jealousy but these men are a very close brotherhood and would die for one another. I am positive the origin of the alpha male can be traced back to these nine broodingly gorgeous extremely tall and muscular knights who are the epitome of strength and power. Led by The Wolf, their six foot five, dark haired, golden hazel eyed captain whose reputation precedes him for all that he has achieved on the battlefield, the most feared knight in the realm, is powerless in the hands of the woman he loves. Although William and Jordan are the focal point of this story, the supporting characters, and there are A LOT of them, share just as much of the storyline. They are well developed and integral to the plot and Kathryn Le Veque does a brilliant job of weaving all of their stories together. She also keeps you guessing as to the ulterior motives of a number of characters. Those I expected to be ruthless were quite the opposite but never fear, there are plenty of traitorous people among both the Scots and the Brits and King Henry is far from finished with his interference. For a book that is just over 900 pages long, there is rarely a dull moment and I never found it boring or tedious. If I had to give you one complaint, it would be that we are continually reminded of the remarkable beauty of Jordan Scott. I don’t know how this woman does not have an over inflated ego because EVERYONE is complimenting her on her magnificence ALL. THE. TIME. But I had to dig deep for that one because I truly loved everything about this story and I promise, you will be spouting the ye, dunna, wunna, canna, dinna slang with a Scottish lilt in no time.

My absolute favourite part of this epic love story? The epilogue. It is completely unexpected and I absolutely loved the twist! Well played Ms. Le Veque! Now could you please write me a story to follow that epilogue because I think I love your genius.

1.5 stars rounding up.

Loaded with typos...and uses modern words that were jarring to me... like "hot man" and a pet peeve of mine is when the character is described as having an opened "O" shaped mouth when gasiping. But I can overlook these if not used often, here it was forgivable.. except the typos.

Let me first say I love Le Veque. It was reading her books that got me so heavily into HR's. But I honestly don't know what's happened to her. Maybe it's not her, maybe now that I have read so many HR's by so many different authors, I have come to see her work through more of an experienced eye.

This one started out promising but went downhill. I started liking the h (Jordan) she was portrayed as a compassionate, intelligent, brave healer. Then it was like WHAM! She was crying at every turn, when she wasn't crying she was whinny, acting like spolied disobedient brat. Her stupidity and disobedient actions lead to others being harmed.. several times, yet she still continues her actions no matter how sorry she was. The girl never learned.

I grew to truly hate her character as well as her cousin Jemma. They both acted like 14 year olds. When not crying, they were lashing out out their men or others while hiding behind their men. And they not only put up with it, but caved to them every time. Can you say pussy whipped? I truly don't know why Wolf and Keiran fell in love with these two women. Oh Wait I do know.. Because they were beautiful. If I had to read one more time about how beautiful Jordan was or how jealous every woman was about her or how every man in the book wanted to sleep with her I was going to throw up.

The book should have only been 1/2 as long. It dragged so much, filling pages with banter that I could care less about, that I found myself skimming over most of the 2nd half of the book.

The redeeming factors in this story was that the secondary characters as well as the Hero (Wolfe) were lovable/likeable and I also liked the ending, going fast forward to the present. It ends with a re telling of the story with Jordan and Wolfe in modern times, he a Navy SEAL and her a nurse. They have they insta love as did Jordan and Wolfe and it is here that Le Veque justifies the whole insta love thing.. that people are bound through time, love never ending. It was unexpected and creative. Points for that.

Another thing I found lacking was the sterotyped antagonists. One was stupid, dirty, arrogant and greesy the other left a bad taste in my mouth (Alexander). He was portrayed so shallowly, and I felt like Le Veque did a great injustice to homosexuals. It felt like she is anti gay. It was truly poor taste.

On the whole, the past two books I have read of hers were so disappointing that I feel I may not read her much anymore, if at all. A Shame, Le Veque's earlier works were so good, I truly don't know what has happened.

The Wolf is truly epic - in every sense of the word! It has a huge cast of characters while at the same time maintaining focus on the central couple (although I really enjoyed the three other romances that took place throughout the book - I felt they added a bit of extra depth to the plot).

As the story begins, Lady Jordan Scott helps a wounded English soldier on the battle field - only to meet him again a couple of years later when he comes to escort her to the English earl she has been promised to marry in order to secure peace between the Scots and the English. The soldier is none other than the infamous 'Wolf' - William de Wolfe - who leads Earl Longley's armies and has been fighting and killing scots for years. Jordan and the Wolf's attraction is powerful and instant.

Only the course of true love does not run smooth - as we discover over the course of this door-stopper of a book.

I loved the fact that this love story is epic and that it's long enough to really lose yourself in. Le Veque is able to sustain both the story-line and the plausibility of the tale over a massive story arc. She weaves in numerous sub-plots, including the romance between Jordan's feisty cousin, Jemma (who I actually preferred to Jordan), and keeps the threat of war between the English and the Scots as the major source of tension throughout.

The chemistry between Jordan and William is great, although I would have liked there to be more obstacles to the culmination of their relationship. They got together just a little too quickly for my liking - I would have liked a bit more longing and tension building. The novel was well-researched and historically accurate. Most of the language used was spot-on, although I did notice on or two 'modern' words and phrases creeping in (especially towards the end). The Epilogue was a great touch - I won't mention it here though to avoid spoilers!

William was a sexy alpha-male with an appealing gentle side which I enjoyed discovering, while Jordan was an interesting, likeable character - just a touch too beautiful! By the time the author has mentioned how crowd-stoppingly gorgeous Jordan is (for the fiftieth time), I started to roll my eyes.

All in all, a hugely entertaining and heart-warming novel. It has been written with energy and passion, and you can tell the author loved writing this story. I look forward to reading more by Kathryn Le Veque.

5++++++ EPIC stars

This about sums up how I feel about this AMAZING book - this is so much more than a historical romance - it's a tale of friendship and camaraderie, a family saga, it's a book about that one moment that has the power to change the course of history.

"Love is never wrong. The timing may not be convenient, but it is not wrong to truly love someone."

Like I said before - it starts out as a love story between Lady Jordan, a Scott destined to marry an English earl, and William de Wolfe, the earl's champion knight, set against the background of the First War of Scottish Independence. Through the introduction of a great secondary cast, this story transforms into something so much more powerful - a piece of fictionalized history.

Both the main and secondary characters were great, and through the use of multiple POVs, I got to connect with each and all of them. I got to cry and laugh with Jordan and her cousins, Jemma and Callie, I got to cheer for Kieran, Paris and Dienwald, both on the battle field, but also outside of it - I wanted everyone to be happy and I suffered immensely when things were not working out how I wanted them to ;).

It was a long book, but thank God it was this way, because I loved every minute I spent with my friends.

This was awesome. Nearly a five star read for me. There were only two problems with the overall book.

1. The story was entertaining, but dragged on, and on, and on. I didn't have much trouble picking it up and losing myself in the read for a while. But in the same token I also didn't have any trouble putting the book down and doing other things. I LOVE a story that is so captivating that you simply don't want to put it down, and if you do, you cannot wait to pick it back up again. This was not that kind of book. I believe it was because it just dragged on and on.

2. Serious need in editing. I can ignore a mistake here and there. No problem. But when I have to go back and reread a sentence to figure out what word was misused, or missing altogether, the story then becomes frustrating. This book was a perfect example of that.

Other than these two things, the story was wonderful. Funny, entertaining, endearing, and sad sometimes as well. The H and h were a perfect match, and the secondary characters were hilarious.

My first Kathryn Le Veque and the start to a serious Le Veque book binge! It might need a bit of editing and the characters tend to use modern language, which is a bit jarring considering it is set in the 1200's - but it is terrific story telling, pulled me into another world and was very much worth reading.

The author creates a sense of adventure, tension, and relationships that made it unputdownable for me. An impossible romance, bonds of friendship and loyalty, doing your duty versus following your heart, hatred and prejudice in a turbulent world all make for a wonderful story. Highly recommended, but with the caveat that if the editing and language issues were cleaned up this would have been a five star read.

A very long book with enough incidents for 2 or 3 so it wears on you. Enough you say. Let it rest. But I did read it and it was a bit better than OK mostly because it tried so hard it garnered sympathy. Mine at least. Unfortunately, by the end I was fed up with the heroine. She was too weepy by half and given to rash behavior which usually endangered a lot of others because she was spoiled and had to have her way - I think this was supposed to be spunky, but really she was usually irrational and unwilling to do as told - you know, spoiled. So she didn't wear well, either. The men - they mostly came armor clad - were OK but in the end nothing special.

DNF 30%. I enjoyed the story, the characters and the writing but once it really got into the love part, it wasn't my deal. I'm going to move onto the next one in the series and add it to my TBR.

God I could gush all day about this epic book, over 900 pages and I could have read 900 more, this historical drama had no flaws for me and I will. It's these characters so much.

William de Wolfe is the most feared fighter in all of England, his reputation is one of a ruthless, unbeatable warrior. Jordan Scott finds herself on the battlefield tending to the wounded Scots of her fathers army when she stumbles across a huge injured man. Jordan is unlike her other family, her heart is pure and she cannot allow herself to make this man (even though he is English)suffer anymore when it looks like his death is imminent so she tends to his wounds hoping to give him peace in his last moments. A year passes and The Wolfe is sent to collect a young Scot lass who is to be wed to his liege to form an alliance between the Scots and the English, unbeknownst to him it is the angel who saved his life on the battlefield and the woman he cannot stop thinking about.

What follows is an epic romance that will stay with me for a long time, it isn't instantaneous although they share a bond, they face many obstacles the biggest being her upcoming nuptials but true love will not be stopped and the pair fall in love.

What's makes this story is the secondary characters, all of William's knight have unique personalities and Jordan's cousin Jemma provides many laughs. The banter between all the characters is hilarious and you can feel the love between them all.

My favourite has to be Jordan, she is so headstrong, stubborn, amazingly kind and wraps William the most fearsome soldier around her little finger (along with all his knights)

The epilogue confused me until I read the passage at the end and then it made me cry. This is an amazing love story with great characters, amazing writing, action, sex and some sad times too. It is definitely a trek at 900 pages but it was worth every hour spent reading it (I just wish there could have been more)

And now this is the story told
Knights of legend, riding bold
Ancient times, of visions gone
Into present of passion’s song
The knight and lady of love long past
Together again, of dreams at last
The Wolfe and his mate, joined for life
Will always be as man and wife
In this age… and the next

This was my first experience with this author & it definitely will not be my last. I absolutely LOVED this book! I can't even begin with all the things I loved about it. The characters were real and you couldn't help but fall for all of them. The relationship between William and Jordan was fierce and beautiful. I really enjoyed their interactions and found myself laughing quite a bit at their "fights". This story truly had it all. A Great War between the Scots & English that kept you engrossed in the epic battles. A heartwarming love story with plenty of passion to keep you blushing and supporting characters that were in my optioned some of the greatest characters I have read. The bond between the knights was magnificent and I was wishing I could meet these amazing men. Paris and William had a great bond that definitely had some comical moments but you could feel the love these two men had for each other. I seriously could go on and on with all my favorite parts, quotes and characters but then my review would go on forever. I highly recommend this book if you're into historical stories that have romance, action, plenty of lovable funny characters that will keep you entertained but also shed a tear or two this is the book for you. Believe me you will not be able to put this book down but will be sad to come to the last page. Go get this book and prepare to fall in love with The Wolfe<3

Oh man. I read the whole thing, so the plot was alright, despite some glaring holes. (In my opinion the shifting alliances were completely predictable from a strategy perspective, so it makes the whole premise seem a bit foolish...okay, so the author doesn't do political/historical writing very well...). What I didn't like about this book: 1) the female protagonist's virtue stems almost entirely from being pretty. The author buys in completely to this system of values--it's kind of revolting. 2) Jane Austen ending wherein literally all of the main characters end up married and happily ever after (trust me, this isn't a spoiler--you can see it coming from a million miles away). 3) The bad guy's villainy seems to stem only from the fact of his being gay. So I have to conclude that the author is seriously homophobic, maybe even hateful towards gays. It's not so bad if there are OTHER reasons for his being bad....but there weren't.

Basically, this overly long book is replete with awful stereotypes, predictable scenes, and milquetoast heroines. I won't be reading anything else by this author.

I received this book as a gift from the author, and I tried to like it because I like her. Unfortunately, I just couldn't make myself finish it. I started this book in July and never had the desire to get back to it. The story drags, and I can't stand how it flip-flops from POV from one paragraph to the next. I hated trying to figure out who is thinking what.

It felt like homework, and I don't read for work. I enjoy it. And when I don't enjoy what I'm reading, even a little bit, I don't want to finish it.

Wow!! This story was absolutely fantastic!! I felt as if I was back in history living with the characters in this book. I loved it!! The characters were all freaking fantastic!! I loved Jordan!! I laughed so many times at her antics. What an undying love affair she had with The Wolfe! I loved the action and adventure that went along with the steamy romance. I loved this book for a few reasons. This is a favorite time period and the author touched on Scotland and England. There was a nice mix of history and romance. All the characters were enjoyable and the story was not just a simple read. I like a little depth to my reads and this book had that without being overwhelming. With limited reading time this was a fun read.

Dreadful.Sloppy writing and terrible sense of history.Hackneyed plot and the writer's knowledge of history is at best sketchy.
