1271 A.D. - The Wolfe's greatest son is a man known as NIGHTHAWK. Patrick de Wolfe is every bit his father's son - cunning, intelligent, and ruthless. An enormous man with his father's dark hair and his mother's pale green eyes, he's the man destined to lead William de Wolfe's great legacy. He is so great, in fact, that the king has personally asked for his service, as one of the king's personal body guards. On the eve of Patrick departing for this auspicious assignment, he finds himself caught up in a skirmish along the Scots border. And a prize lands in his lap that will change his destiny. A prize in the form of a Scots captive harboring a deadly and important secret, one that could bring war and destruction upon those who shelter her. When Brighton "Bridey" de Favereux is rescued by the powerful English knight, she is taken back to the massive fortress of Questing Castle, seat of the legendary de Wolfe family. Having known nothing but hardship and cruelty her entire life, she is surprised when they are kind to her. The English, who are supposed to be her mortal enemy, are gracious and generous. For the first time, she understands that people can be kind to each other. And the kindest one of all is the man who saved her. Some loves are unexpected while others are instantly realized. The love between Patrick and Brighton is something that comes from a deeper place of understanding and attraction, a powerful love that cannot be denied... but it is a love that may cost them both their very lives when Bridey's terrible secret is uncovered.

I have to say that I just can’t stop picking up this author’s books, they are so fantastic and the narrator “Brad Wills” is simply so talented and easy to listen to. I was eager more of this family, so I grabbed up Patrick’s book. I am really in love with how these books begin. They are so unique and unlike anything I have ever read. Patrick is the third son and one of the most talented of all of William de Wolf’s sons. The story starts off with Patrick coming into the King to tell him of a story that will keep him of certain duties and goes back to three weeks previous. The king himself, wants to have Patrick be the head of his guard, a prestigious position and a royal appointment that Patrick feels honored to be offered. He is eager to leave for London soon, but will miss the close ties that he has with his family.

While with his men, on a raid of Scottish raiders, he stumbles across an innocent woman, whom the Scots had kidnapped and taken captive. And when a dying woman tells him of her true identity, he knows that he is the only protection that this woman has. Because she is the bastard child of the king of the northmen and a Scottish woman who was forced to leave Brighton at a nunnery for her safe keeping. But now that safety is gone, because Brighton was taken in the nunnery and Patrick is not one to leave behind a woman in need of protection especially when he gives her his vow.

Patrick and Brighton starts to get to know each other and a sweet love and affection forms between them. Patrick decides that its best to head to his father’s holding, to get his help and advice on the situation. But William isn’t as sympathetic as Patrick expects him to be and he ends up being on the battle end of a verbal fight with his father, which is hard on both father and son since they have such a close relationship. But Patrick knows that his father is in the wrong, and will fight and protect Brighton no matter what. So he marries her against his father’s will. Patrick knows that he may be in a great battle because certain truths about Brighton and an enemy that will seek her out no matter what….to kill her most cruelly. Patrick needs the help of the King if they come against a fight against the church to protect the woman he loves. But will Patrick lose Brighton to unforseeen enemies and be the cunning Nighthawlk and protect her no matter the danger….

What a heartwarming and most beautifully written romance that I fell in love with here. I honestly had a blast with this story and getting back with The Wolfe family was so unique. We see our couple from the first book “The Wolfe” and seeing them more matured with children mostly grown and grandchildren was so charming. We see how this family has grown so much, and I really loved their family ties here. This was a romance that was simply so heart felt and emotional at times. I was definitely on board with the love story. What I do love about this author, is that the conflicts introduced aren’t on the intimate relationship but on outside forces that challenge the couple and I do LOVE that. The relationship itself is low angst which I have been in the mood for lately. And so this story really worked for me. The history that Le Veque brings into the story is so on point (as always) and I felt as if I had stepped through time when picking this book up. The story is so well balanced and you become caught up in the story very easily.

Now this story is WAY shorter than “The Wolfe” seeing as its only 13 hours long instead of being almost 40 hours long. ButI honestly didn’t notice any lack of depth or substance to the story, which is the true testament of this author’s talent. Every time I pick her up I just know I am in for an exciting ride through time, and this book was no exception. But I will warn you that it gets very EMOTIONAL in the end. Like honestly….grab a box of tissues because I was sobbing, because the ending is so happy yet sad at the same time. Those who have read this book already, know exactly what I mean. Now I want to reassure you that there is a HEA, but other elements are a bit sad but finalizing.

So overall I would have to say that this a must read for any historical romance lover, most especially if you have a secret love for the medieval era. Or if you are eager to pick up an medieval romance….grab this author up and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Re-reading as part of the boxed set "Brides of the Borders" by Kathryn Le Veque. Second read.

Original review:

For years, my favorite historical romance has been "The Wolfe" by Kathryn Le Veque. I've read the 909-page epic no less than 5 times. The page-turning romance featuring the legendary English knight, Sir William de Wolfe, and the Scottish lady, Jordan, is in my mind, a masterpiece. So, when Ms. Le Veque announced that she was writing a novel about the Wolfe's son, I was thrilled. I had high hopes. I'm ecstatic to find that my expectations were not only fulfilled, they were surpassed. "Nighthawk" is Kathryn Le Veque at her very best.

The love story between Patrick de Wolfe ("Atty") and Brighton (“Bridey”) de Favereux is so very sweet and moving. Patrick, the consummate warrior, has been working his entire life towards the ultimate goal and has finally had his dream fulfilled. He is about to embark on what would prove to be the pinnacle of any English warrior's dream career when he rescues a young postulate kidnapped by Scots reivers. Almost immediately he is thrown into a quandary, questioning his emotions and his life-long goal. It started out as a simple rescue but, as the puzzle pieces slowly come together, turns into a situation that could have tremendous ramifications for himself, his family and his country. As if this isn't enough for Patrick, he is keenly aware of his father's dreams for him and his legacy. Torn between the expectations of his father, his King and his love for Bridey has brought Patrick to an important cross road in his life. How Patrick handles it all is edge-of-your seat reading. Oh yes, there is a lot of intrigue as mysteries are revealed.

In addition to Sir William de Wolfe and his lovely wife, Jordan ("The Wolfe"), I was also thrilled to visit with my other favorite characters who played prominent roles in "The Wolfe." It was wonderful to catch up with Sir Paris de Norville, Sir Kieran Hage and Jemma and meet their grown children and respective spouses. It was just like visiting old, cherished friends.

Yes, I loved this book. I predict "Nighthawk" will be re-read by me many times. And, if you haven't had the pleasure of reading "The Wolfe," I highly recommend that masterpiece.

Okay to good. I felt this story was missing something. The romance was rushed and the villain's excuse for vengeance fell flat. Maybe I'm comparing this book with other books from this author. If this was my first read by this author I might have enjoyed it more.

Adequate but a slog to get through

I liked the story and the characters somewhat (they're both perfect, saintly, amazing people apparently so not very multifaceted but nice enough). The historical setting and grammar and world building are fine. The biggest let down and the reason for my lower score is really just how long winded the descriptions were. It was a huge drag and it seemed like dialogue and monologue just continuously went over the same ground.
Adequate but a slog to get through.

A son of The Wolfe rescues a postulate from a Scottish raid, but the confession of a nun reveals secrets of the young woman's identity. Can the love of a knight for a lady save him from the anger of a king and from the men who try to take her away from him? A powerful love story. LE VEQUE never disappoints!

I have been anticipating this book by Ms. Kathryn Le Veque for quite a while especially since I preordered the book when I first saw it on amazon last year. I knew my wait was going to be well worth it because when it comes to Ms. Le Veque she never disappoints me as an author. Her stories are so full of life filled with overwhelming detailed descriptions that you can picture yourself in either the heart of the battle or hanging out with the characters. This is Ms. Le Veque at her best the story is amazingly well-written and the characters major or minor make you love them all. It just pulls you in and just doesn’t let you go until the very end. In fact when I think of Ms. Le Veque’s stories this one most of all I seriously have to say that I have a book hangover that I really am not ready to read anything for a few days until I can get this book out of my system and have to reread it several times which yes I have already done. I am not ready to read something else which in reality I am not ready to leave this story at all because I want to live in it just a little longer.
Patrick de Wolfe known as Nighthawke is at King Henry’s castle telling a most extraordinary story. It is actually his story to tell and why he can’t accept the position of lord protector for King Henry. Patrick recounts that a raiding party of Scots were heading away from the coast after having ransacked an English settlement and Coldingham priory taking two women one an old woman the other a young beautiful woman known as Brighton de Favereux. According to the old woman Brighton holds a secret where men would kill her and bring war to three nations the Scots, the English and the Norse. What is Patrick to do return Brighton to Coldingham or protect her from all that want to do her harm even when Patrick can’t help but fall in love with Brighton and her with him? Their love could destroy not only them, everyone they hold dear and cause war between three nations.
This is how Ms. Le Veque should write her alpha heroes strong, handsome of course arrogant but sensitive they love their family and are willing to sacrifice all for love. Patrick just made me not only swoon but sigh thinking there is no greater hero even though Ms. Le Veque has written other heroes that I have fallen for but I can safely say that Patrick is worthy in my eyes to be added to my ever growing list of book boyfriends. I loved him from the get go which is unusual for me I love his charm his sarcasm his sense of humor okay just everything about him. Well then what about Patrick’s love interest and soul mate Brighton? I definitely wanted a girl to be able to stand up for herself even when facing someone as fearsome as Patrick but still had to have courage, determination and a certain feistiness to be her own person. Brighton definitely had that even though Patrick seemed and was scary she had no problems telling Patrick how she felt. So she was a good heroine for Patrick too. Plus with some amazing minor characters Alec, Colm, Ansom, Kerk and the rest with some old familiar characters William, Kieran, Paris, Kevin, Jordan, Jemma and others I loved visiting old and new alike. The saddest part for me was the ending and never wanting the book to end. So of course I rated this book five stars when actually to me it deserves 100. Ms. Le Veque really hit it out of the ballpark with this one!

Superbly and Masterfully Done! A tale to keep in my library, for sure. A new Knight immerged, one who captivated my interest and earned a spot in my heart.

Sir Patrick de Wolfe, he is half English and half Scot, but completely an English Knight in training and in his mentality. He is the Garrison Commander of Berwick Castle. He has Black Raven Wing Hair and eyes the color of Jade and is known as The Nighthawk because he is cunning, very swift and merciless in battle. That alone is very impressive, but add on to this he is the son of the legendary Willam de Wolfe, "The Wolfe". All of these qualifications have earned him his most coveted position of being the head of King Henry's Lord Protectors. A position he has worked very hard to achieve. As he is getting ready to fulfill his new assignment, he must handle a skirmish which is taken place along the borders of Scotland and England close to his current post. There he rescues a female Captive and from someone else's lips learns the knowledge of her existence may cause a war that no one has ever seen the likes of. He knows he must seek counsel from the most important knight he knows, The Wolfe.

Brighton de Favereux, a postulate, has been known snapped from a priory and is in the middle of a battle. When all is said and done, she is left with the English instead. She is terrified and the enormous knight promises to keep her safe. Brighton fears the English. They are her enemies. This is what she has been told her entire life. Now she will learn real world truths.

Sir Patrick may come to realize with time, what this beautiful captive can do to his mind, soul and to his very existence. Brighton may come to learn that all is not at it seems and that new emotions can exist and possibly death along with it.

A fantastic story in itself, but made so much more meaningful with the de Wolfe characters and antics of old.

Not her best

I'm usually a Le Veque fan but not this one. Needs another edit at least. I'm not sure what happened to the usual characters but the 'heroes' second guessed themselves, knights were disrespectful, and the heroine was lacking. This one seemed rushed, the story was unrealistic in almost every scene and it was almost a dnf for me.

Eh...so so

I didn't really care for the book. The female character really had no character. She was very uninteresting. The male character was better, but was terribly mushy and the way he expressed his feelings seemed very unrealistic. Men really don't talk like he did. Overall a disappointing book.

Didn't really feel a connection between the characters in this one.
And I'm starting to notice a trend in Le Veque's female characters that I do not like: they are not too smart.

Gila bagus nih... Ada damsel in distress, diselamatkan ksatria.

Biasalah ortu pasti mikirnya bibit bobot bebet. Jawa banget nih wkwkwk. Dan pastinya biarpun ditentang, Patrick nekat nikah diam-diam sama Brighton. Selanjutnya biasa ditebak keriweuhan pun semakin melebar. Tapi ngikutinnya asyik kok. Bikin tetap penasaran. Bhkan ada epic battle sampai 3 minggu lamanya saat Berwick diserang Scot, kemudian Norsenya dateng dong. 😱

When I wanted to continue reading in this author’s world, I decided to stay with the de Wolfe clan and this story centers around Patrick, known as the Nighthawk and one of the most feared sons of The Wolfe and maintains control over Berwick Castle, not far from his father’s domain, Questing Castle. Berwick Castle is a large, almost impenetrable castle. Patrick is known as the Nighthawk, making his own name for himself for his prowess at war and is getting ready to travel to London to a prestigious position with the King. He comes upon a skirmish on the border and finds a woman captive by some reivers. When captured he finds she’s a postulate for a priory and was kidnapped by the men. Along with the woman, Brighton, was a nun, whom Patrick finds and is told a tale by the nun’s dying words.

Taking her back to Berwick, he decides to get counsel from his father, William. But things will spin out of control, and Patrick will need to decide if his feelings of wanting to protect the woman is just his honor or something more. There are a lot of secrets that have been kept from Brighton, and the de Wolfe’s could become a target from a Scottish clan and some Norsemen.

This was an action-packed book, and the family members are back here, along with a gaggle of grandkids. William is older now, but still a force to be reckoned with, along with their wives. The romance isn’t quite as fast as William and Jordan, but William will soon find out that his son has become a formidable man.

I don’t know how the author can sweep us into the epic journey, but I’m along for the ride. I was completely in awe of the masterful way this story was told, and how this author astonishes me every time I read one her books.

As with every story of Ms. Le Veque, I loved this from the start. I have read the 1st two books in this collection, but if I hadn't, I think I would have understood this story with the 1st 2 stories characters. It's a little tricky/confusing keeping up with all the Aunt's, Uncle's, Cousin's, etc... But by the 1st quarter of the story..It's easy to remember.

Patrick de Wolfe is the 3rd born child after the twins. He's known for his strength, honor, service as a Knight and son of his Dad William; as the Nighthawk..leader of his Keep. His cousin's are part of his army..all strong, honorable, fierce protectors of their border, family and defender's of England's King. Of course there is a huge army of men under Patrick, AKA Atty to family. While protecting a priory called Coldingham from a Clan Gordon raid, Patrick here's a Nuns dying confession about a young woman named Brighton. A woman raised by the nuns, planning to become a nun herself. Her world is turned upside down when Patrick scoops her up and takes her to his Castle: Berwick. She is a beautiful, tiny, sweet woman that steals Patrick's heart immediately.

With time, patience, and of course action..her new life becomes one she wants. She learns of a life that included much love and support for family..something Brighton never knew. (Her nickname is Bridey)
I won't say anything more to spoil the story, but it's a fast-paced, action filled read that I had a hard time putting down..great read, awesome story, and has me looking forward to book #4 in this series. WTG Katherine Le Veque..5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and more.

Patrick de Wolfe is an enormous man who is destined to lead his father’s legacy. The king has personally asked for her service and one of his personal bodyguards. Before he can depart he finds himself in a skirmish along the Scots border. What he doesn’t expect is a beautiful woman who was kidnapped from an abby.

This was a slow building romance that was very sweet. Patrick is the strong, protective knight with a large wonderful family. Brighton (Bridey) is the innocent and sheltered woman who has just learned the truth of her heritage. Patrick saves Bridey from raiders and whisks her away to safety in his keep. Her parentage makes it unsafe for her to return to the church, not that he really wants her to. Patrick fights his attraction to her at first but quickly realizes he has fallen hard for this beautiful innocent woman who is finally getting a taste of real life. I really enjoyed their relationship. It was so sweet and cute.

“But we could live in a cave on the coast and I would still call it home if you were there. Wherever you are, that is my home.”

While some of the beginning was very slow and dense in details I still really enjoyed it. The story was good, the characters sweet, and the love was intense and perfect. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

This book had a lot of potential but fell flat unfortunately. While the story started interesting and kept my interest somewhat, it was hard to overlook the speedy love development that felt so unrealistic. Imagine, falling in love with someone within days, refusing your royal appointment, and bringing war to the borders because you are so in love. This would have made more sense if there were more scenes and development between Patrick and Brighton to actually witness their love and the reason for Patrick’s actions and emotions. But there were very little scenes between the main characters.
The need for vengeance from the Gordon side against the Haye seemed also a bit exaggerated in my opinion. Maybe in those medieval times things were this extreme and probably were however it also felt somewhat exaggerated.
Another thing which made this book fall flat was the writing, certain words to describe for example Patrick was repeated so many times that I lost count. The word enormous was apparently a favourite and there were some descriptions that were cringe worthy.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

THE DANES TO THE RESCUE!!!

Which, for a book set at the border of England and Scotland in the medieval period, is a bit illogical. It is a testament to this author's skill that this makes so much sense that I knew, just totally knew, the longships were coming up the river, and that the evil man would get his.
Most of the book is set as a tale being told. It is, nonetheless, very tense. The fact that the telling is done in London disappears, and the reader ends up on the battlefield, in the castle, along the road, and all the other places. In places, the thought processes of the characters are shown, but usually, that is reserved for major players.
While there are times when people try, half heartedly, to break JP the lovers, the only true danger comes in the last battle of the book. But that is another tale.
The ending is poignant, but lovely.

I loved this book! Granted, I wasn't much of a fan of the two primary protagonists. I kept expecting 'Atty' & 'Bridey' to fall on the ground having a tantrum & demanding their wubby! Just because I was not a fan of them does not mean they were not exceptionally well-written, because they definitely were! My favorite characters were Penelope, Magnus and Juliana de la Haye's brother (whose name I cannot remember). I don't know if he was meant to be that funny or if my sense of humor is just that dark...

Overall, the quality of writing was exceptional and the characters and settings were remarkably well-developed. As with most well-written books, some characters are more likable than others. I look forward to reading more of Kathryn Le Veque's books in the future.

I expect a story of passion, battles, knights and personal struggles when I delve into one of Kathryn Le Veque’s story. She never, ever disappoints me.

This superb story revolves around love – love for family, friends, of one’s country and ultimately love of a truelife partner – a tie so engulfing, so fulfilling, it’s as air to a soul.

“My love for your mother has pulled me through time and space, and continues to do so. Not even death will end it.” Quote from Nighthawk, words from William de Wolfe, Patrick’s father

If you’ve been reading Le Veque, you’ll find her books are more than three dimensional in their setting. They are somehow compounded with such richly textured characters, action-packed battles where death stares you in the face, such love and understanding you wish to reside in her world for all time. As I read further into her many books, it only gets better because characters from her other novels return to us as a community of people whose lives are interwoven with each other.

Patrick de Wolfe, the youngest son of William, loves his Da, never wants to tangle (she always wins) with his Scot’s born mother, is loyal to his family, and is career driven. A dream he’s always had, to join King Henry as his protector has come to him. Just as he thinks he knows what is important in life, he meets a young woman, saves her life, and from this point his journey diverges.

Who could know that love could change him so? But with his need to protect this woman, he brings danger to his own family. Brighton de Favereux has breached the dynamics of Patrick’s world. Patrick’s decisions and actions will try the tight-knit connections with his parents, uncle, sisters and brothers. His Da, very wise and greatly respected, butts heads with his son. Parents always think they know what is best for their children. Patrick needs to find his way and in this elegantly written story he does. He sees his father’s actions speak louder than his words for Patrick thinks his father has lived the example that love is the most important thing in the world—that is what he needs to discover for himself.

“I think I knew I loved her from the start,” he mumbled. “It is not a matter of defying the church or disobeying you. I had to answer my heart, Da.” Quote from Nighthawk, words from Patrick de Wolfe.

Brighton is a postulate of the priory. She’d been delivered to the church just after she was born. She must be returned to her position there, but can Patrick let her go? Danger, secrets and evil surround her in seemingly innocent surroundings. Mother Prioress has hidden hurt and hatred for the Haye clan. This is set to explode with Brighton in the middle.

As Brighton and Patrick’s budding romance takes hold, doubts plague Brighton as she realizes her total inadequacy in this new world outside of the priory. She can’t possibly measure up to the type of woman Patrick needs.

Patrick is in new territory with this woman, too. He realizes he loves her and wants to protect her. There is a scene, just too funny, where Patrick wants to make love to Brighton, and he likens his wife’s body as a keep – laying siege to it much like his warrior instincts! Brother! Can you imagine this innocent’s reaction? Patrick, you deserve an eye-roll, big time!

If you haven’t read any of Le Veque’s work, you are in for such a treat. The more I read, the more I become familiar with the knights and the world of Le Veque! Wonderful reads, exciting moments and deliciously poignant scenes.

This is an ARC copy, provided by the publisher to read and review. My comments, feelings and opinions are my own. The only thing that influences my review was the excellence of story, writing style, and rich characters which touches the very heart of the reader.

We meet the great William de Wolfe's son, Patrick The Nighthawk, he is caught up in diabolical plan that has been set in motion decades prior to his arrival. Poor Lady Brighton was nothing but a ward of the church until Patrick came to her rescue one night. It was immense fun to revisit characters from The De Wolfe saga. This story is filled with intrigue, action, and passion that keeps you captured until the end. It was true testament to the power of true love and what the human spirit can achieve to protect that love. Once again Kathryn LeVeque delivered a heart pounding read that left you satisfied.

Patrick de Wolfe

Responding to reports of reavers, the Nighthawk rescues a postulate (Brighton) who was taken from a nearby abbey. The elderly nun that was taken as well extracts an oath from him to protect her charge and reveals Brighton's astonishing parentage before she passed away. Now, Patrick de Wolfe aka Nighthawk, must decide whether his vow to keep Brighton safe, and his fledgling feelings for her, or his appointment to be Protector of the King is more important. The two meet plenty of resistance, including The Wolfe himself, a band of angry Scotts, and even a King. Can love prevail? Of coarse it can! HEA with an emotional ending to an epic story.

If anyone knows how to deliver medieval romance, Kathryn Le Veque is the one. Nighthawk is a spectacular historical romance. Ms. Le Veque has provided readers with a well-written book populated with a magnificent cast of characters. Patrick is a warrior and in command of Berwick Castle when he rescued Brighton after she was kidnapped. Brighton and Patrick's story is loaded with drama, humor, sexy bits, action and suspense. I loved reading this book and look forward to reading more from Kathryn Le Veque soon. Nighthawk: Sons of de Wolfe is book 3 of the de Wolfe Pack Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Good Series

Started the series with “Warwolfe” and liked the beginning of that story but didn’t care for it much from about the middle to end. Thought I would just read some of “Wolfe” and see if it was any better and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT, so continuing on with the series. I really liked 3rd son Patrick in “Nighthawk” and enjoyed the book but was wondering why the series skipped from William to Patrick over the first born twins of William, Scott and Troy. Excited to move on to book 4 with Scott’s story. Would recommend the series, atleast from Book 2 “The Wolfe”. So far so good!!

Another Terrific Read by Kathryn LeVeque

This story about Patrick and Brighton was a beautiful love story full of suspense and humor. I love how Kathryn brings back so many of the Wolfe Pack characters. Never a dull moment so don't plan on setting the book down to return to later and if you do you will be bracing at the bit to get back to it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Since I started reading this series each book has been great, I had to buy the whole series.

This is such a lovely and very heart warming book of unexpected love found, in unusual circumstances. Patrick and Brighton's story is one of humour, love, care and nurturing. But what makes this story so wonderful, are all the extra characters that Patrick and Brighton are surrounded by. Both their family and friends are such a close knit group that are so warm and insightful, this completely adds to the book. It is a delightful story that has you smiling one minute and having heartache the next. Another winner from Kathryn!
