The Forbidden Brother by Joanne Rock is the seventh story in her McNeill Magnates series, a broad family based set of Western themed romances. While each romance in this series is a standalone, there are some story arcs that continue from one book to the next, introducing subplots to entice the reader to want to pick up more of the stories.
Jillian Ross is in remission from breast cancer and finding her feet again. She’s got an adventurous job scouting movie locations, and the perfect place for an upcoming western would be Cody McNeill’s ranch – except he isn’t interested in meeting with anyone, or having anything filmed on his land. When Jillian runs into Cody at a bar, she mistakes him for his twin brother Carson whom she’d planned to approach in Cody’s stead, and when they share a steamy night together it soon comes out who she really is (and that she mistook Cody for his twin!). Despite their complicated start, Jillian and Cody do actually like each other, and can’t deny the attraction between them, even with their opposing agendas.
Some of Cody’s siblings are interested in helping Jillian and figuring out if she can use some of their land for the film. It means she gets to stick around, and this means more interactions with Cody, who helps her cross off some items on her bucket list of living life to the fullest in celebration of regaining her health. When Jillian becomes pregnant, an event that is almost miraculous for her having understood the chances of pregnancy from her cancer treatments would be slim, Cody is willing to do whatever he can to support Jillian and the baby. Jillian doesn’t want to be another obligation on Cody’s plate. Can Cody convince her that his feelings for her are genuine and that they could be a happy family together?
The Forbidden Brother has the main storyline and then another two running around the center. This annoyed me as I found myself getting into the romance between Cody and Jillian and then we were taken to another character and their issues, especially Scarlet.
It was unresolved at the end with Cody and Jillian and considering her miracle I really wanted to see an ending for them. I have not read any of the other books in the series and do not feel like I was missing anything. There are great characters in this family and I am intrigued by the girl’s mother’s secrets.
Jillian held such interest to me, I immediately connected to her and so when she and Cody began talking about their future I was disappointed I found myself at the end of the story. I could read so much more of this couple.
An easy and light read with Cody and Jillian having lovely emotion and passion with each other.
The Forbidden brother was a short but enjoyable story that I read within one sitting. There was a lot of chemistry between the main characters and I really loved them together. I really enjoyed the storyline between these two characters. I did find that at the end of the story that I had a lot of questions that weren’t answered and hope that there is another story after this one.
Jillian was a strong female character that had been through a lot in the past few years. I really loved the way that she didn’t give up despite the things that she went through.
Cody I absolutely loved reading about because of the way that he took responsibility for his family and did what he had to do for them. He was a great character that I really enjoyed reading about.
I enjoyed the secondary characters within the story and the McNeil family. I cannot wait to read more about them because there is a lot of questions that I have about them that I would love to find out more.
Although I enjoyed this short story there were a lot of answers left unanswered for me with no explanation at the end to let you if more was to come. Or what or why?
The two main characters were engaging enough but just when I was starting to feel we were going to go somewhere the story was over. So, we don’t find out about the movie, who wrote the note, Cody’s stepmom’s secrets or health, Scarlett’s ex, does Cody marry Jillian, does her pregnancy go well???, etc.….
There seems to be a whole lot of secrets the siblings are keeping too from one another that stem from their father. What is up with his dislike for Scarlett? Is she not his? HMmm?
Now this book is mainly about Jillian a breast cancer survivor of two years out from the surgery. She is a locations scout for a major studio in Hollywood. She found a perfect location sold her bosses on it not knowing when she hiked onto it that it was private property. Owned by the McNeill family. She’s asked to film there but Cody McNeill keeps just saying “No” flat out. No explanation or meeting with her.
So, she went to town to get his approval in research she finds out he has numerous siblings including a brother, Carson. She decided she would contact him since he at one time was involved with the movie industry. So, when she is sitting in a little busy bar having her first glass of wine since being diagnosed she sees Carson pass by the window she is sitting in front of.
Even though it’s raining she follows him. He goes into a little hole in the wall bar that only locals seem to know about since no one is there. She sits in a seat that she can observe him. When he catches her staring at him and he assumes she believes he is his twin brother. He is mad at his brother for the first time in years so he decides to have a little fun to get back at him. Not knowing she doesn’t know him.
He asks her to dance not realizing having the feel of Jillian in his arms he would find out how well she fits. She fits in his arms cause the chemistry is overpowering and the chemistry stirs him that he hasn’t felt in months. Really some ever. When he looks down at Jillian’s face he would have to guess by the blush on her cheeks that she is having the same reaction.
So, he asks if she would like to go somewhere on an adventure with him. Well, once he said those words Jillian couldn’t resist because of her list not to mention she hadn’t been close to a man since her boyfriend dumped her the day of her surgery to remove the cancerous tumor.
During the end of the one and done she says Carson’s name and Cody, goes still because although he was lying to her she really thought she was with his brother. She is pale when he says who he is. Then she has a confession to make.
The story itself is a good one. It could just have been me looking for more answers. Maybe I missed something and this is a novella, to set you up for the series for sure. But the characters are likable. I give this: 3 stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at
The Forbidden Brother (The McNeill Magnates #7) by Joanne Rock ..I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for Wild Wyoming Nights in August. Thank you NetGalley for letting me preview this book. Jillian and Cody's story made me laugh and cry and also understand what a person with breast cancer goes through. There is drama and steamy sex and a HEA...but the mystery of Paige ..Cody's stepmom continues on... can't wait.
Let me tell you about this book and how I got it. I was riding my bike at the Burning man festival. We were on our way back to our camp from our first exploration of the festival after a few intensive days of camp building. And my eyes fall on a sign that says "Library" So naturally I had to stop by. Shelves stacked with books and a sign saying that you will get fined if you return a book! I was in heaven. But also I was overstimulated by all the books and the heat and the general exhaustion. I sifted quickly through one shelf and found a romance book that caught my eye. I was pleased with my selection and turned to leave, but then I noticed another shelf. It caught my eye because it appeared to have similar books on it, from the same series perhaps. Sifting through that shelf my eyes landed on the forbidden brother. I was so excited about the title that was nothing short of intriguing and slightly controversial. Having one book in hand and not wanting to let it go I left the library. I kept telling everyone of the exciting fund! and about the controversial title that I found there.. Someone suggested I take it, as it is often people check out multiple books from the library, any library.. and seeing how excited I was about the book, I should just grab it.. My partner went to get it for me a day or so later and I was elated! And this, dear review reader, is how I ended up as the proud owner of this book. I also consider this story a much better story than the one told in the book.
Here are some reasons why: The book title is by far the most exciting thing about the book. The book is short, as such, the storyline is very superficial. No character development. Everything really felt flat. This is, as I understand, a romance novel, however it felt very unromantic to me. While the book and as such, the story, are quite short, at least two whole chapters were dedicated to a side character. Main characters were flat and boring. Spicy parts are salt and pepper at best. No justification to the book title. This book could have been called 'the reluctant rancher' or 'the forbidden ranch' even. Forbidden brother? Please..
Overall, I loved hating this book and it even came in handy when it started to rain at the festival and I had to entertain myself in the tent.
It did not live to my expectations which is why its getting a very low ranking from me. And I hope this review is not longer than the friggin book.
Oh, I love this series. Now we are dealing with the Wyoming side of things and I will admit, I miss my other boys. But I digress. This side is going to be a doozy for sure. Between Scarlett, the youngest and my absolute favorite so far, their mom and her secret, the dad being so obstinate and the other twin brother, this one is going to be awesome.
Jillian is one of my favorite female characters that Ms. Rock has written to date. A survivor but doesn't play the victim, she is going after her own life on her terms. Being a location scout affords her the luxury of traveling and having her adventures. Plus, she just has that spunk that I just love. She went after a McNeill, okay the "wrong" one but it turned out fine, right? Pregnant by one of them? That should have made her happy but considering what her health issue is/was, Ms. Rock handles it very, very well. And that's all I'm going to say about that.
Cody in a sense reminds me of Gabe. I know, I shouldn't compare but being the "quiet" one, he doesn't trust people like his siblings. And don't even mention the other branch of the family tree. That's like treason for his siblings to embrace their grandfather. I was happy to see him and Rosa back for a bit. He really is trying. Cody's being just brought a smile to face throughout the whole book. He's loyal, the quiet observer but fiercely protective of the people that he loves...including Jillian.
I loved how Cody and Jillian's relationship had all an equal amount of push and pull. Ms. Rock treats them as equals and it shows. Cody isn't over the top when it comes to Jillian and knows when to back off. Jillian, on the other hand, lets him know how she feels and what she wants to do with her life and the pregnancy. They talked and acted like adults. :)
Overall, this is another winner in the McNeill's saga. Oh and Scarlett...I just can't. I have no words. She is a hoot and I have the strangest feeling that she is going to get herself into a situation that even SHE can't talk her way out of. ;)
This is the first book I have read of this author, it was very entertaining and kept my attention. I loved the twists and turns along with many surprises. The mystery pulls you in leaving you wondering how it will all play out. This is a series some questions will be answered other will be coming up in the rest of the series. I really don’t like what I call a cliffhanger but it does make you want to buy the other books in the series just to find out how the mystery of the mother is going to play out. It is a story inside a story with the main characters having misunderstandings, arguments along with drama and turmoil. There are secrets that the author shows a little of, but she is holding out and does hook the reader.
Jillian is very likable and makes a few BIG mistakes, her life has not been easy. She had one of life’s worse scares that has changed her life making her seek adventure and seeing the world. Sometimes doctors are wrong depending on what side of the fence you set on it good be good news or bad. Cody keeps the family on the straight and narrow, he is a leader where the rest of the family is more into adventure. I really liked him even the rest of the family. His down fall is being mistaken for the wrong brother but it gets a little completed.
It is very well written with a great plot with wonderful characters that do keep you entertained. I read it all at one setting I just had to know how it would all turn out. There is a HAE for the main characters as the mystery builds around the secrets of the mother and why she took off, what about the note that was giving to one of the girls. What could the mother be hiding? I most likely will buy the next book to learn more of the secrets. If you don’t mind that the story doesn’t answer all your questions and you will have to read the series to know what it is all about this is a great read and well worth your time.
The Forbidden Brother by Joanne Rock is amazing! I was left begging for more. I want to read every book by this writer. Romance, check. Emotional journey, check. Hot heroes, check. Realistic situations, double check. This tale showed how a family reunites under trouble, stress, and how they can set aside their differences. Themes of responsibility, love, and family are shown throughout the pages. Being the older sibling, the main alpha hero has a lot to live up to, as well as balancing...sometimes, it's just too much. Struggles of battling a cancer and fighting to regain her confidence, the heroine, is a breath of fresh air. Her determination to live life the fullest was felt. The entire plot was heartfelt.
In this latest novella, I was immediately taken with both main characters. Cody is the oldest heir and the most responsible. Lost his mother while young and fighting to be strong for his family. Family responsibility can be a heavy weight. So, when opportunity arrives in a sassy yet vibrant woman, Jillian, he is all for letting go. Jillian is all for a little flirtation that soon leads to a full seduction. Cody and Jillian's passion turns into something more...something deeper. Jillian ends up getting a gift that she never thought she would ever get in life. Cody didn't think he could love someone after being hurt in the past. Yet both seem to find their dreams in each other. The Forbidden Brother by Joanne Rock is full of passion, sparks, and adventure. Overall, I would recommend it to readers everywhere.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
Mistaken identity at the worst possible time! With another sassy read in The McNeill Magnates series, we are meeting the Wyoming side of the family and quickly become entrenched in their drama. It's fun to see hints of the New York guys as we get to know the cousins better. A strong foundation of secrets were exposed in this book, so I'm looking forward to what's to come in the series!
Film location scout Jillian Ross has found a location her boss is going to adore for the western film she's working on ... only trouble is, the owner shut her down before she could even get out her full spiel! She can't lose this location, or her new job might be history before she's barely started, so she sets out to find his much friendlier brother and convince him to get her a meeting!
Cody McNeill isn't one for partying it up all that much, but when he sees the sexy thing that just walked into his local bar, he's happy tonight is the night he walked through that door. After a steamy hook-up, he realizes not only did she think he was his twin brother, but this is that Hollywood type that's been ringing his phone off the hook! He'd be nudging her towards the county line right quick like ... if only she hadn't just wound up pregnant!
“The Forbidden Brother” by Joanne Rock is a continuation of her McNeill Magnates miniseries and introduces the Wyoming McNeill’s. This branch of the family features the children of Donovan McNeill and first up is son Cody.
Cody McNeill runs the family ranch and Jillian Ross is a movie studio location scout. She discovers the beauty of Black Creek Ranch and convinces her boss the land is perfect to film an upcoming movie. Now all she has to do is convince Cody, who is dead set against it. Cody is protective of his family and becomes protective of Jillian. Jillian is finding her independence after surviving cancer and needs to stand on her own two feet. I have to say, the first meeting between these two is super steamy and just might make you blush.
“The Forbidden Brother” is sexy and sultry from the first chapter to the end. But it is also about the love for family. There is also a secondary storyline with Cody’s sister, Scarlett, which seems to be a set-up for future books.
Ms. Rock continues to write stories that are romantic, emotional, and passionate and she is definitely on my auto-buy list.
Jillian doesn't want to stay for long she wants to do more with he life now that she got a second chance. While shes working as a film scout her mission is to get the filming crew to a beautiful ranch if only the family can Cody to agree. So maybe if she can meet up with his brother she can convince him to change his brother mind. Thing is things get heated when she meets him not knowing she it was actually Cody and things get complicated when she finds out she pregnant.
This book was just what I like in a contemporary romance. I would've loved to see more but what was given was good. I liked the characters, would've been nice to learn more about them though just know the basics and that's it. Well, no actually the readers will get to know more about Jillian's character and reasoning behind her wanting to do more with her life. I did like that connection between the two. I loved how there was just enough drama to keep things interesting. Overall it was a pretty good book I enjoyed it.
Jillian Ross' cancer nearly took her life, so who can blame her for looking for adventure? When her new job as a film location scout takes her to the McNeill ranches in Wyoming, she hopes to convince rancher Cody McNeill to allow filming on his property. His resounding NO WAY, seems pretty final so she decides to see if his brother, Carson, might convince him for her. Following Carson into a local bar, Jillian is blown away by the feelings the man generates in her. One mind-blowing encounter that same night, one slip of the tongue, and Jillian learns the man she followed wasn't Carson, but his twin brother, Cody, the man she wanted to get to all along. Their attraction is explosive but will discovering she's pregnant from their encounter lead to a forever love?
I read this book in less than a day, and now I need to find the rest of the series so I can find out what happens with Paige, and the rest of the family. I always enjoy Joanne Rock's books. If you're looking for a quick, sexy read, pick this one up!
So we are back with the almighty McNeill family. This time though its the other side of the McNeill family. And we are following Cody and Jillian.
Look I liked both Cody and Jillian. I thought they both were kind, sweet, and caring. You could tell how much Cody cared about his family. And I felt for Jillian and what she had gone through.
I will say this though I felt like some of the family dynamics I'm used to in these books was missing in this one. Yes Cody's family was in it and you could tell how much he cared for them and loved them. But they seemed very disconnected.
I thought this book started off very well and strong. Than I kind of felt like it just kind of fizzled off and I found myself skimming through a lot of it. I'm hoping also that we get some answers to some questions that were left open in Carsons book.
I'm giving this book 3.5 Stars out of 5!!!!
***I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion***
This short novel takes us to the McNeill’s of Wyoming . Cody, the oldest and most serious of the clan meets Jillian Ross, a film scout when she approaches him thinking Cody is his brother Carson. Sexual attraction is immediate until not only does she call out Carson’s name, but also the condom breaks. Without giving away the plot, I will say that the plot was engaging and both characters were complex and very likable. Dealing with real life circumstances such as an unplanned pregnancy, especially one that occurs to a cancer survivor . The family dynamics and it’s members promise a few stories in the future. The one downside for me is that we are left with many lose ends. Amongst them, I would have liked to have more on the future of these two. I voluntarily read this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has secrets, passion, love, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first The Magnate's Mail-Order Bride (The McNeill Magnates #1) The Magnate's Marriage Merger His Accidental Heir Little Secrets: His Pregnant Secretary Claiming His Secret Heir For the Sake of His Heir (The McNeill Magnates #6)
This is Jillian and Cody’s story. Jillian needs Cody to allow filming on his property. He wants nothing to do with the public or filming on his ranch. Chemistry pulls these two together but one word out of her mouth might ruin everything. That one night leads to a baby but will he want anything to do with her or does he just want the baby?
I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Wow! What a awesome story. This book touched me in so many different ways. Jillian Ross, Cancer survivor working to secure access to a ranch for the movie company she works for. After being denied access by the owner she takes a chance and tries to go through his brother. Unbeknown to her he is a twin and the brother that she was hoping to contact all along was the one she had such a hard time contacting. Cody McNeil was adamant on not giving the movie studio access to his ranch. But the drama doesn't stop there. . . .possible blackmail to Cody's sister and a missing family member. . . . A surprise pregnancy? Nothing pulls a divided family together like danger and intrigue. Lastly I was so happy at the way this story ended, I was on edge till the end. Nothing like a happy ending yet the story with this family continues.
One night of passion, mistaken identity…and unmistakable consequences! Jillian Ross craves adventure. And she gets it when her new career as a (film scout) leads her to the ranch owned by the wealthy Wyoming McNeills. But the owner of the Black Creek Ranch she’s sold the film company on, isn’t budging. His answer is no! He has no social media presence so she decides to try getting his brother on the neighboring ranch to convince him to relent. Giving in to temptation with the playboy Carson McNeill causes havoc—since it’s actually his reclusive twin, Cody McNeill, she’s fallen for! Which she discovers when she cries out his name in passion. Now she’s pregnant—and still can’t get enough of her reluctant rancher. Is this adventure just beginning?
Ends rather abruptly with many unanswered questions...
Jillian is craving adventure after what she has went through 2 years ago...She goes to Wyoming to try to get a location for a movie. She has repeatedly tried to get them to agree so she goes there...While at a bar she spots who she thinks is Carson. She follows him and after a steamy hot connection where she utters his name she finds out it is Cody..The notorious brother that does not want this to happen...
This is a really good book I don't want to give much away about as this series is so good and this book is no exception. There is some mystery and intrigue along with Jillian and Cody fighting love as neithers wants to be hurt and she doesn't know if she is so good to her because of her condition or because he really wants here...
I really need to read all of the books in this series, Cody was enough to make me want to devour the series. Jillian is in town to get Cody McNeill to let a production company film on his property. Problem is he's the opposite of his brother. He's a loner of sorts, likes his privacy and wants nothing to do with Hollywood on his land. His brother on the other hand is a bit of a playboy, loves attention and Jillian sees him as her way to get to his brother. A one time hookup ends awkwardly when she calls out the wrong brothers name.... Cody isn't exactly innocent in this little snafu! The Forbidden Brother was a quick read with a little tension, some unanswered questions and a lot of heat! I'm looking forward to the next book so we can get some of our questions answered.
I loved The Forbidden Brother by Joanne Rock! Jillian Ross is craving a little excitement and adventure in her life and feels that she more than deserves it. Stumbling upon the McNeill family playboy one night is a temptation she doesn't want to walk away from, but that one night stand has consequences. Consequences neither one expected! She finds out that she has fallen for the wrong brother and she is pregnant, something she thought could never happen. Cody doesn't care that meeting and spending the night with Jillian was a situation of mistaken identity because it was only one night, but finding out that she is pregnant is a game changer. He won't walk from her or his child no matter what.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
I finished this book with more questions than answers. A guess that's what happens when you start a Series on Book 7. Plus, this book ends just when things start getting "real" for the main couple- Cody and Jillian. Cody McNeill is a reclusive rancher that falls hard for the independent, career minded Jillian. Jillian is a cancer survivor. which makes Jillian not your typical Harlequin Romance female star. The story ends abruptly, as I really wanted to read more about the romance of this mixed match couple that come together due to a 1-night stand that ends in a "miracle pregnancy". Plus there are two mysterious sub-plots the reader is left wondering about- one involving Cody's step-mother and the other about the youngest McNeill, Scarlett.
The McNeill Magnates by Joanne Rock are one of my favorite ongoing series. The new shift in continuing stories within the Desire line means that the Wyoming stories are that much more complex and that much more fun. The Forbidden Brother is the first of this trilogy and when I finished reading all I wanted to do is keep reading the next installment. While Cody and Jillian’s story comes mostly to a resolution there is so much more going on in the family that you want to dive right in to the next book. Good thing it releases soon.
Jillian mistakes one twin for the other and finds herself falling for him and ends up pregnant after she was told she probably would not be able to have babies due to her cancer treatment. Cody pretends to be his twin to meet the pretty redhead in bar and finds himself falling for her and when he discovers that she was looking for his brother to get to him for permission to use his ranch for movie he gets upset but can't stay away from her. In the end, they decide to have her adventures together. Hope she can carry baby. Will look for more of this series.
I really liked this one. It starts hot and fast and doesn't burn out. Cody does see a little red when he discovers at just the worst moment she did mistake him for his twin, who she had hoped to kiss up to in order to get him to change his mind on a business request. Throw in some family squabbles, a generation-old grudge and an unexpected diagnosis for the gal who licked breast cancer and is out discovering the world and you have a fun read. What I wasn't crazy about in this one was all of the loose ends left hanging. The mom, the movie star, the sister, the threat, upcoming shoot, etc....
This is a nice read with very low angst and likable characters. While I felt for Cody since I too am the "serious" sibling in my family and would have loved to trade places with my "fun' siblings a time or two.... Jillian is a strong heroine and I really liked their romance. So for anyone who likes "angst" in their romances, give it a try because sometimes it's nice to read something different instead of the same overused themes!
There are times Cody means business, “and I can assure you, if there are, I won’t be a difficult man to reach.” Cody is like the sweetest man when it comes to his woman, “you have to let me take care of you, though. Good food. Enough rest.” He kissed her again, lingering this time until her body heated with awareness. “And if I opt to spend the day in bed with you, you have to tell me if I wear you out.” I liked this book, I fell in love with Cody.
I loved this nouvelle! Fast and easy read. Cody is about running the ranch and Jillian is scout for a movie crew to get the best locations. Now the Jillian has gotten a second chance at life she doesn’t want to waste it by settling down. It’s a case of mistaken identity when she approaches “Carson” to try and convince him to change Cody’s mind about filming on his family’s ranch. Sleeping with “Carson” and having the condom break is just the icing on the cake. There is undeniable chemistry between Cody and Jillian but will it be enough?
I really liked Cody and Jillian's story. I felt for both of these characters, and I'm glad they are on their way to being together. I'd not read any of the previous books in the series, so I almost felt left out of the loop. Even though it was standalone, the story arcs of Scarlett and Paige were unresolved. I assume they resolve in the next or future books in the series.
This is another "episode" in the McNeill family. This story deals with the dynamic between Jillian and Cody. I love this family and so far each book has ended too soon and always leaves me wanting the next book. :)
