The first time evil walked across the old bridge in Mississippi was 1918. When forensic psychologist Elizabeth Monroe crosses the midpoint on the bridge in search of her daughter’s killer, there is no turning back. Elizabeth makes the connection between a heinous crime that happened in 1918 and the recent death of a college student. Old families. Old money. A new vendetta.
And the only one who's standing in the way is Elizabeth Monroe.

nine fifty-nine ay em, the morning of the 8th of february 2018, thursday...finished, good read, i liked it, three stars, kindle. not a library loaner, purchased, amazon. i think this is the 10th from lowe for me, wondered if it has any connection to that other, possibly the first i read, is it called the butterfly forest? "insert book/author" is not functioning, hasn't for some time, maybe have to do it "manually"? oh well.
thought the first quarter not as easy to "get into"...perhaps because this one is not with that sean-guy from the other stories, but after that point, i was into the groove of things, and the story definitely picked up the pace...not that it died not prior...just me, this reader, my guess.
another noted some...things, call 'em typos...and heh! i didn't notice what that reader noticed, misspelled name, davison/davidson? funny what one reader catches, what another does not. reminds me a bit of those memes, facebook and the like, paragraph upside down or something, missing vowels, if you can read this...so maybe all it is, is...that the story flow is quick enough, the reader getting into it...so forth, so on...and a letter missing or out of place does not affect the journey. or something.
i guess you could contact...who, the publisher? amazon? i dunno...could list the handful of typos, wrong letter situations and maybe i will. enjoyed the story. saw that one review had issues with who/what was portrayed as the "bad guys"...and, well...meh...lowe does provide more than a moment of grace since there are others in the story who do not share the quality of the bad...saw another review, or maybe it was one of the same noted above...that said something about clues or something that are dropped, not pursued. didn't catch that, if it happened, so i'm not sure what gives there...maybe like me not seeing a name spelled on way here, another way, there. or something.
cold here...right around the zero mark, real small flakes of snow falling quickly...well...almost...look once, falling fast, look again, and the wind must pick up from time to time. onto something else now.
One of Tom Lowe's biggest fans. No one is better at painting a scene with words . The Sean O'Brian series is some of the best writing anywhere. However, this book, "Wrath" fails in lots of categories. Just to list a couple of things I did not like: 1. Here we have a female who does TOO MUCH of the detective work. Goes into dangerous situations where any sane person would not go alone. ( Is she a super hero or just a professor trying to find a killer). 2. Hate groups? There are many hate groups within every race, ethnic, and culture. I question the essence of the story as being an unfair portrayal of Christians, conservatives, and the general population of the people of Mississippi. Just so the reader will know, I do have Tom Lowe's email address and will send a copy of this review to him.
I have been a fan of Lowe's Sean O'Brien series since the start. The new Elizabeth Monroe series brings a female professor's expertise in forensic profiling. Her daughter Molly Monroe was killed and Elizabeth still seeks the one who took her life. Molly's tragedy was introduced in Lowe's The Butterfly Forest as was Elizabeth. Sean and Elizabeth are similar as in they have guts and courage to face down evil. Great crime drama with southern locations depicted. Amazing characters are introduced who no doubt will appear later in this series. Stand alone read that does not end on a cliff hanger but rather leaves us anxious for more to come. Don't miss this one or any of author's other books. Hoping Elizabeth and Sean will cross paths again.
Wrath by author Tom Lowe is introducing a woman from an earlier Sean O'Brien book, The Butterfly Forest. Elizabeth Monroe is still grieving for her daughter Molly who was murdered in a Florida wildlife area. That book has stayed with me since I first read it, and now Tom Lowe is giving us Elizabeth...YAY! Elizabeth has given up her cafe and moved to Hattiesburg, MS where she is a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. One of her best students goes missing and this propels Elizabeth into the hunt for a murderer. Terrible things have happened on the old bridge in Clark County, Mississippi. I lived in Quitman, MS back in the 1950-1960's until I was about twelve years old and I heard whispered stories at night of evil things which had happened around that bridge. In WRATH, the author starts with the hanging of four slaves in the 1800's. This is the connection Elizabeth links to the sinister murders and the old bridge. This book is powerfully written and is based on some historical facts. There are some scenes in the book which I was not aware have ever happened in Clark County, such as churches and snakes. But, that makes for an interesting book plot! The book deals with hurtful parts of history which some evil people persist in glorifying by their actions in our present day, in all states, not just Mississippi. I am thrilled with the Elizabeth Monroe series! I can hardly wait for the next one! Mississippi is rich in history, and not all of it is shameful! Bring it on Elizabeth Monroe...!
Tom Lowe writes consistently good page turners, and this first in a series featuring Elizabeth Monroe is yet another. Monroe, whose daughter has been murdered years ago (read Lowe's "Butterfly Forest", one of his best), is a forensic psychologist and professor who becomes involved in the investigation of a serial killer. She sees similarities to her own daughter's murder.
Clues lead her to events that tie into a century-old lynching and current day hate groups. This is a very up-to-date narrative. As always, Lowe does a good job making his characters realistic and likable, even those with four legs. Recommended.
Sad because there are people who think violence is the way to achieve what they believe is their right and often innocent ones are killed as the result. Frightening because they are our neighbors. The story is good and engrossing, stemming if I recall correctly, from another Tom Lowe book. There were a couple of errors to stir up the grammatically correct readers but what bothered me most was this supposedly bright woman who did several dumb things. Most glaring was when she "didn't think" to write down the license plate number of a truck thought to belong to a killer!
Mr Lowe writes great mysteries! I've read one series he wrote about a brave man who lives in a cabin on a river and also on a boat. I loved that series and was sad that I finished it. Maybe he'll write more about that hero. I've read two of this series with Elizabeth Monroe as the heroine. This, too is a wonderful series, at least I hope I find more! But this particular book is completely appropriate for this time! It's a must read! If you care about life, liberty and justice, this is the book for you!
This is the story of a criminal psychologist teaming up with a detective to find a serial killer. The author is skilled at creating visuals for his readers. I love his descriptions of scenery and the character’s surroundings. To me it started slowly, but the excitement and action came eventually. I would have liked more action and less psychological rhetoric. I found Elizabeth to be a bit bland compared to Sean O’Brien, a character from Mr. Lowe’s popular series. I love Sean O’Brien !
I've been a fan of this author since early 2013, when only the first four Sean O'Brien books were out. And they were fantastic! Honestly, though, when I heard Tom Lowe was coming out with a new series, I was a little hesitant because I was worried I wouldn't like it as much as the other series. But I was wrong! Wrath is every bit as exciting as Lowe's other books! It was hard to put down and I look forward, as usual, to his future books!
The story was well written. The characters and how they interact with each other was good. The suspense in the story was great it kept me reading wanting to find out what would happen next.
That being said I felt the characters were a little 2D. Some authors can write in a way that pulls you into the story so you feel like a participant in the story. I like that and I didn't feel that with these characters.
Liz Monroe wants closure for her daughter's murder. The horrific slaying of a young student from her forensic psych class hits Liz hard and she becomes involved in the investigation. Tom Lowe does a masterful job of twists and turns in delivering a scary and compelling story. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Thank you for one of the best books I have read in along time. Amazing read, well written. Excitement at every turn, wonderful characters. I anxiously await the second. There is so much more to say. It was disturbing but the best books are! Please bread this book you will not be disappointed.
What a good read! I read it during nearly every spare moment I had. I really like Tom Lowe's novels for their plots, descriptions, and characters. I was mildly disturbed, though,by more than a few grammar and spelling errors. But, then, I've always been a spelling and grammar Nazi.
A poorly written story with characters too broadly drawn and over written. Plot was too full of extraneous stuff, leads which were introduced and then forgotten. Lowe is a much better writer than this. Cannot recommend it.
Elizabeth Monroe keeps you turning pages with new twists on every page. Some repetition that world shorten the book, but I don't really mind. Can't wait for the next book.
I have read all of the Sean O'Brien series. I enjoy the suspense Tom Lowe writes and the book was not a disappointment. It has a good story line and I like the way it used part of a story from a Sean O'Brien book.
Story was good but there was too much psycho-babble mixed in the religion. I skimmed most of this so I could finish book. I did like the main characters and would probably read another in the series.
Ive been reading this author recently and she has woven in many characters that keep u wondering who the heck the culprit could be. And the unsolved murder of her daughter is always there.
This book had the same twist and turns that all his books have. Dr. Monroe was one fearless woman. I love 💘the way she thought about how she wanted to live her life.
I thoroughly enjoy reading any books written by Tom Lowe. He immediately captures your interest and keeps the story moving right along. I highly recommend this author .
It kept me enthralled! However, I read the book 2 first, so some was a worry for me about Jack the cat! I knew he was in book 2, but I really thought he was killed. So happy with that ending! I love the character!
I haven’t read such a nail biter in awhile. Very difficult to find a stopping point every night. Sad and upsetting story about college kids being murdered in the guise of the Bible.
I like the Southern History Lowe puts in his books...BUT with it being the reason why a nutsy-fagin serial killer was justifying his kills, bringing in the Civil War and the Klan, it was a bit much.
I enjoyed this book not quite as much as the Sean O'Brien books but it still kept me interested and curious as to what would happen next. I read anything I can of Tom Lowe, he always entertains.
