As far as modern books on Hellenic Polytheism go this is the most comprehensive that I've come across! I was very hesitant to read it, expecting either a very strict "do it this way or else don't bother" approach or a UPG heavy approach with zero resources to back up any claims. Thankfully, this book is neither. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of research and understanding how the Ancient Greeks worshiped while also promoting the concepts of choice and modernization. Which is basically my own approach to the Hellenic Religion so I was quite happy to see it represented in a book!

I was also very happy to see an ABUNDANCE of footnotes and sources included in each chapter as well as a complete bibliography at the end of the book. That's always my first indication of whether a book like this is worthy of my time and attention. Of course, citing sources is important both to give credit as well as to show the reader you aren't just making things up, but I also appreciate sources because they are a great place to start for any further research into topics that interest you.

What I also liked and appreciated about this book is the topics discussed in it. There's an entire section dedicated to studying where the author lists and discusses primary and secondary sources. Again really pushing that research element which is something not many modern books talk about. I really enjoyed that the author not only made sure to drive home the importance of researching but did what he could to help make it easier for the reader.

Another topic discussed that I surprisingly don't see a lot of in modern books despite its popularity within the community: Festivals and the Hellenic Calendar. Yes, this book goes INTO IT. It goes over the break down of the months, what the months means, and how to follow the lunar calendar. Then it goes month by month and lists the festivals we know that were celebrated, who was honored, how they were celebrated, and how a modern worshiper can go about celebrating them today. It really is a great breakdown and overview on the Hellenic Calendar. So much so that the book could be worth it just for that section since I know very well how much people are interested in the festivals but struggle greatly with finding resources.

Other topics discussed in this book are magic in Ancient Greece, Household worship, the gods (Olympians and non-olympians), mindset of the Ancient Greeks, and even the Ancient Greek diet.

One last thing, I find this book perfect for beginners because the author guides the reader in doing basically a one month trial of the religion. I've always encouraged people to do basically a try before you buy approach to the religion especially for those who are very unsure for whatever reason. I think it's a fantastic way to help beginners practice the Hellenic Religion without overwhelming them too much and giving them permission to walk away if they find it isn't for them.

Overall I just really enjoyed this book and how the author chose to approach everything. It aligns a lot with my own beliefs and view of Hellenic Polytheism so perhaps I'm bias in my enjoyment. But regardless I do recommend this book especially for complete beginners to the religion. I might even purchase myself my own copy so I can continue to refer to it.

Good in some aspects, like the very thorough calendar with instructions as to how to construct your own Hellenismos practice in the 21st century.

Included some not-so-good things. "In these modern-day politically correct times, some people seem to be less resilient to verbal abuse"? Pardon? How is it a bad thing that people don't tolerate abuse? Whaaat... Also, the not-so-scientific criticism of GMOs... uh oh.

First I have to say, the author has clearly good intentions. He did his best.
But he knows Hellenismos only from the outside.
Not all information are wrong, but he mixes relevant topics with irrelevant ones and seems to be unfamiliar with contemporary Hellenismos. He talks a lot about Wicca, Neopaganism, Occultism, Magick [sic], and thus he gives the impression to not know or understand the incompatibility between Hellenismos and Neopaganism.
At the end I must say, this book is anything but about Hellenismos.

For the aspirant hellenic gentile practitioner.
This book doesn't dwell deeply on the ancient Greek esoteric cult but does give instructions on the daily, weekly and monthly practices according to the Athenian calendar. It covers some cultural aspects of the Greek religion and imparts basic information regarding the Gods.
Magic is mentioned but no primary sources are available (at the moment of publishing) to prove nor disprove how the ancient Greeks viewed the topic, the author quickly points to the academic discordance on the matter.
Finally the author manages, although only superficially, to touch on modern esoteric and magick spiritual expressions, again, linking it back to the rites of the ancient Greeks.

If you are looking for a book that introduces Greek Polytheism and talks about Hellenism this is definitely one of the first starting books to read and it explains so much more than the internet.

Though these kinds of books I read very loosely to understand the culture more and not necessarily adapting it into more modern context as in my opinion it is meant to be read in the perspective of out an outsider looking in on the culture to study it. So take things with a grain of salt.

ASPIRING OR CURRENT HELLENIST PAGANS!! If you want to learn more about Hellenism, the Greek gods, or the religious practices of Ancient Greece and how to modernize them for today’s day and age, THIS IS YOUR BOOK.

This book is what got me started and gave me direction on my pagan path. Tony Mierzwicki’s Hellenismos is an excellent read for any of the following information regarding Hellenism:

- Ancient Greek History & Culture (and how that contributed to their religion)
- Major Tenets of the Religion
- Mythological Information, Origins, and Offerings to the Gods
- How to venerate your gods in an easy, modern fashion that is still in line with ancient traditions
- How to Choose Deities to Focus on in your Worship
- How to Set Up an Altar for those Deities
- Prayers & Hymns for those Deities
- The Relationship between Hellenism, Magick, Academia, and Philosophy

There’s even more there that I’m forgetting, but it’s all good information, backed by an impressive bibliography filled with legitimate sources.

This book is definitely geared more towards paganism than witchcraft, but I personally believe that the precedent to working with deities in witchcraft is worshipping them. This book provides the perfect guide to doing so, down to outlining the Athenian Lunar / Annual Festival Calendar and giving modern alternatives for ancient practices, traditions, and rituals for Hellenic pagans to follow if they want to. I personally started using a slightly different version of this calendar as part of my worship not long ago, and so far, I’ve found it to be incredibly rewarding from a spiritual sense.

There is some discussion about closed or semi-closed sects of the religion, cults that may have a history of violence, human / animal sacrifices, slavery, and how the Greeks viewed sexual orientation but all of it is in a purely historical sense, and / or meant to educate. The author makes it very clear that he holds no views that infringe upon human rights, encourage violence, or appropriate closed practices. All of the rituals and prayers mentioned and suggested in this book are completely open for use by any and all Hellenists.

The book does have some not-so scientific statements about GMOs that are a little annoying because they are out of place and unnecessary, but other than that, it’s an excellent read.

I highly recommend the book for any Hellenists, aspiring Hellenists, or just… anyone who wants to learn more about the religion in general. It’s informative, well-written, and easy to understand.

I leave this review with my favorite witchy quote from the book: "The ancient Greeks clearly never doubted the power and effectiveness of magick as it was so widely practiced. With power comes responsibility. I strongly believe that those seeking to recreate ancient magick should do so ethically."

I admit I didn’t like the overwhelming cover, but I kept to the cliché – to not judge a book by its cover. And I'm so glad I did! The author offers not only a comprehensive description of the Hellenic polytheistic practices, much needed for most contemporary practitioners, but manages to show that incorporating them in our modern, busy lives is not as hard as it seems.

The book is very well structured and offers precise and understandable descriptions of complicated topics. The reader will find not only descriptions of religious practices, but also a handy introduction to their historical context. The author goes a step further, explaining the means of making a comprehensive study and the use of primary and secondary source texts (which, unfortunately, is most of the time is a terra incognita for modern day pagans). He even goes so far as to explain the pronunciation of ancient Greek in the (very useful) Appendix!

Mierzwicki manages to weave almost seamlessly into our modern everyday life most of the ancient practices. And the book is indeed undoubtedly practical, listing simply daily and festival observances, among all else. But I believe that its best feature is the thorough explanation of ancient beliefs, which is something that is rarely seen in esoteric books.

Overall “Hellenismos. Practicing Greek Polytheism Today” is the type of book the pagan community needs the most - written not only by a scholar, but also a practitioner. I would definitely recommend it not only to those interested in Hellenic polytheism, but to all who aim to learn more about the views of ancient people on magic, ritual and the Gods.

A charming, well-researched, thorough text. To call it instructional doesn't seem fair (though the interspersed homework assignments and self-reflective prompts are useful!)—it's suggestive, rather, and Mierzwicki constantly reiterates that a modern practice of Hellenismos is something that can and should be modified by the individual practitioner to serve their own needs and uses. I didn't necessarily read this because I am actively trying to practice modern polytheism—but were I to adopt a faith today, Hellenismos could be it. There is something logical and intuitive about it, and this text takes care to include rich detail of Greek history so as to proper rectify and reconstruct what a Hellenic religion might look like today what with the abolition of slavery and the improvement of women's rights. But what has always drawn me to Hellenismos especially is the way it allows us to return to a state of "childlike wonder". As Mierzwicki puts it, "There is a world of difference between experiencing a storm front as a low pressure system as compared to a manifestation of the power of Zeus...The essence of polytheism is to experience divinities everywhere." There is no punishment for not adopting Hellenismos, which feels so drastically different from other (monotheistic) doctrines. It is not a one-size-fits-all religion. It is simply a framework through which to make your days more and more beautiful. :-)

Great Book for Hellenismos Study

This book is a superior source that has been slammed with bad reviews because of the reputation of Llewellyn Publishers. In most cases regarding Llewellyn, I would agree with the negative reviews but this most certainly is not the case for this book. Tony has carefully researched and footnotes are provided to back the material in the book. The book is a great addition to Hellenismos Study will definitely shed light upon alternative reconstruction choices that followers of Hellenismos may want to further investigate. Tony also emphasizes the importance of each person incorporating and creating rites which are relevant to our modern world. The Greeks were not a static society and neither should we be. Anyone who has studied this devotional way of life will invariably note the evolution of Greek religion thru the course of time. What we call religion to them was simply a daily way of life. Likewise, we need to modernize this lifestyle to reflect what is morally acceptable today.

Tony has written a book which deserves serious praise for the content! Don't miss out reading this book.

A really great introduction to Hellenismos. This book covers controversial subjects in the ancient religion ranging from slavery to human and animal sacrifice, and from the subjugation of women to the practices of magick. There's a lengthy chapter dealing with the Attic festival calendar, and a detailed section on the lunar calendar and household worship. The only thing I wish was more detailed was the chapter on the actual Gods and their natures. This book appears to assume the reader already has a basic understanding of greek myths and the nature of the Gods in myth. This book encourages followers to form their own experience with the divine after understanding the parameters of worship found in the scant sources from the ancient world. While I wouldn't recommend this as a first intro 101 book for a newbie (it's more of a 102 book), this book is still an admirable approach and contributes immensely to the literature on Hellenic polytheism in modern times. Also, kudos for the numerous footnotes and appendices.

It’s a really great book that does a wonderful job of giving you strong foundation and even helping you work out a traditional calendar to use in your practice- or even just to give a try. It’s packed full of references for what’s being said and has a large bibliography.

However there is one thing that’s continually brought up, and honestly a bit off putting for what’s supposed to be covered, and that’s GMOs. It’s out of place a bit jarring. At one point the author goes on to call them “a laboratory experiment onto the world which will ultimately negatively impact all life as we know it”. Does that strong opinion backed up with no facts belong in a book about Hellenic reconstruction? No it really doesn’t.

Other than that it’s a wonderful book though.

What a great book!! I'm not reading this to start practicing, but this was just so interesting. So much information about how exactly Greek polytheism looked like. Mierzwicki does not shy away from controversial topics and he tries to adapt the ancient rites to modern times. Very well researched, very resourceful book with so much thrilling bits and pieces. I have read so much already on Greek mythology, but this was also new to me and I loved it. As a visual person I would have liked some illustrations but I understand that was maybe hard to find or get rights for.

This book is very well researched and comprehensive. The author includes solid information and multiple options for a contemporary interpretation of Greek Polytheism, leaving it up to the reader which path, if any, is right for them. The author also includes his own opinions on things both within that context and out of it (like going on a mini rant about GMOs), which detracted from the book. Overall it was still an interesting read.

I thought this book was a great introduction to starting your practice of the ancient Greek faith path(s). It should be read after (preferably), or with, a book of actual Greek myths: modern adaptations or that of Homer and Hesiod. While this book relies on mostly secondary resouces already written, the footnotes and bibliography allow you to further explore individual topics in depth on your own.

The best book out there right now for beginning Hellenic worship. As other reviewers have mentioned there are some odd asides about "political correctness" and GMOs, but they're easy to overlook for the wealth of information the rest of the book contains. Excellent historical and mythological backgrounds are covered, as well as instructions on daily and festival worship. Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved this book, as a person who has just started practicing this religion, it helped me a lot to know where to start, the first steps for my altar and above all how to make offerings and pray to the gods in a respectful way, I totally recommend it at least for beginners.

I would have rated this book a 5, if not for the author often inserting their own opinion where it's not needed. A passage on the evils of GMO has no place in a book on Hellenismos

An extremely solid overview of adapting Greek polytheism in this modern age, I think it would serve well as a one stop shop for most people interested in the subject, or to be used along side other beginner guides like Hellenic Polytheism so that you can compare and contrast view points to find what works for you.

This + a copy of either the Homeric or Orphic hymns is about all you need to get started in the religion, saying that as someone who’s been a polytheist for years now.

This and Hellenic Polytheism are both on Kindle Unlimited if you have that service.

I highly recommend this book.

Excellent start to Hellenism and understanding the anciant greek religion and way of life. Not really much to say, it touches a lot of subject about who to sorship, how to do it and how in modern life it can be incorporated. It has also a big part about Magik (as the author calls it), the sorcery part of the religion.

This is the most in-depth, heavily researched work on Hellenic Polytheism that I have ever read. Every point that the author brings up is supported by historical text or data from accepted and reputable historians and archeologists. The sheer volume of information in this book cannot be overstated. There is nothing in the market that currently compares to this work in terms of complexity and clarity.

Mr. Mierzwicki writes in a direct, cleat voice that is easy to read and comprehend. The book is well organized and the chapters flow well into each other. At the end of every chapter, you will find a concise summary, and an extensive appendix and glossary are also included.

The majority of the very few negative reviews appears to centered around two points:

1. Many have criticized the publisher, Llewellyn Publications. I am the first to acknowledge that Llewellyn Publications has a spotted reputation in the metaphysical community However, they are a heavy player in the industry, and any writer trying to sell a book of this type would love to be published by them. It's petty and vindictive to leave a negative review for an author for something that has nothing to do with the quality of their work.

2. Others have criticized Mierzwicki in negative reviews for being a "magician", without even apparently reading the book, as they fail to to mention the actual text of the book at all during their negative review. I fail to see how Mr. Mierzwicki being a practitioner of magick means that his work is faulty in any way, and this type of review is academically lazy at best, and completely disreputable at worst.
