About the author

Rebecca Gablé wurde am 25. September 1964 in einer Kleinstadt am Niederrhein geboren. Nach dem Abitur 1984 machte sie eine Lehre als Bankkauffrau. In diesem Beruf hat sie anschließend auch vier Jahre gearbeitet, meistens auf einem Stützpunkt der Royal Air Force, wo sie viel über England, seine Sprache und seine Menschen gelernt hat. Aber die Lust am Erzählen hatte Rebecca Gablé immer schon, und 1990, nachdem sie ihren ersten Roman geschrieben hatte, gab sie ihren erlernten Broterwerb auf, um aus der Lust einen Beruf zu machen. Sie begann ein Literaturstudium in Düsseldorf, dessen Schwerpunkt sich mehr und mehr zur Mediävistik - der Lehre vom Mittelalter - verlagerte.

Nach mehrjähriger, frustrationsreicher Verlagssuche erschien 1995 bei Bastei Lübbe ihr erster Kriminalroman „Jagdfieber“, der im Jahr darauf für den Friedrich-Glauser-Krimipreis nominiert wurde, und sie trat der Autorengruppe deutschsprachiger Kriminalliteratur - dem Syndikat - bei, dessen Sprecherin sie drei Jahre lang war.

Seit Beendigung ihres Studiums 1996 arbeitet sie als freie Schriftstellerin. Zwischenzeitlich hat sie auch zwei Semester lang altenglische Literatur an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität in Düsseldorf gelehrt, was sie zu ihrem Bedauern aus Zeitgründen wieder aufgeben musste. Seit mit ihrem ersten historischen Roman „Das Lächeln der Fortuna“ 1997 der Durchbruch kam, hat sie etwa alle zwei Jahre einen Mittelalterroman veröffentlicht, die alle Beststeller geworden und in viele Sprachen übersetzt sind. 2006 erhielt sie für ihren Roman „Die Hüter der Rose“ den Sir Walter Scott-Preis.

Rebecca Gablé lebt mit ihrem Mann am Niederrhein und auf Mallorca.

This was a great audible original. I think the original book is German but as a production it’s better than a word to word translation along with a big cast and all the sounds and noises of medieval London. The story is in a similar vein to Ken Folletts medieval cathedral books, with wool as one of the most important commodities at the time. Definitely planning to read the rest of the series.

Bin ja generell nicht so der Typ für (fiktionale) historische Romane. Aber das Hörbuch gab es kostenlos von Audible hinterher geworfen. Vermutlich sollte es mich anfüttern und hungrig auf mehr machen - hat nicht funktioniert.
Jonah ist ein gänzlich unsympathischer Charakter und ich geb keinen Penny auf sein weiteres Schicksal. Das Buch trieft nur so vor Stereotypen. Scheißegal ob bei Master Durham, dem liederlichen Trunkenbold, der verkniffenen Cousine, dem Priester, der Hure wider Willen, dem Pfandleiher oder der Königin. Nichts überrascht. Auf einen Vergewaltigung in Hörspielform hätte ich auch gut verzichten können. (Gibt's eigentlich FSK für Hörbücher?)
Einzig die Produktion ist ambitioniert. Es gibt sehr viele Stimmen, die man aus Film und Fernsehen kennt (die Synchronstimmen von Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Kevin Spacey, Donal Logue, Kate Winslet sind dabei - also durchaus sehr versierte Leute ihres Fachs) Nur dank denen habe ich es überhaupt durch das Buch geschafft.

Der Untertitel "Die Lehrjahre" sind im übrigen irreführend, da Jonah schon nach ziemlich kurzer Zeit im Buch kein Lehrling mehr ist. Es gibt auch so viele Charaktere im Buch deren Verbleib mich mehr interessieren würden als das von Jonah. Rebecca Gablé kommt jedenfalls auf meine schwarze Liste. Keine Ahnung inwiefern das ein Hör"dreh"buch war oder ob die Dialoge so im Buch stehen. Das Studio gab sein Bestes, aber es wertet solch flache Story nicht auf.

"Der König der purpurnen Stadt" ist für ein dreiteiliges Hörspiel eingelesen worden. Den ersten Teil habe ich gehört und bin sofort in der Story gewesen. Die Sprecher haben Hervorragendes geleistet, und ich habe gebannt gelauscht. 08/10 Punkte gebe ich für dieses erste Drittel der Geschichte und die volle Punktzahl den Sprechern.

Es war mein Versuch in das Genre Historienroman einzusteigen. Das Hörbuch ist sehr aufwändig und liebevoll gestaltet. Die Geschichte birgt allerdings wenig Spannung. Auch die angeblich so sorgfältige Hintergrundrecherche, die in diese Romane fliessen soll, habe ich kaum bemerkt. Ich hatte nie das Gefühl, es mit der der geistigen Welt von mittelalterlichen Menschen zu tun zu haben. Die Figuren sind eher klischiert und das Mittelalter nur Hintergrund für eine fade Liebesgeschichte.

Ein wunderbarer Einstieg in dieses großartige Epos. Wirkt durchaus authentisch durch diese Inszenierung mit hervorragenden Sprechern, die einfach Lust auf mehr macht. Werde auf jeden Fall weiter hören und tiefer in die Zeit eintauchen. Empfehle ich als Einstieg bedenkenlos weiter.

When I was a child, I'd spend a lot of time at my grandparents' house. A memory that I had forgotten about was during school holidays, when my grandmother would tuck me into the sofa and say "Now, let's listen to the radio theatre". But then I saw an ad for Audible originals, and I jumped on it, and when I heard the voice acting and the sound engineering, the memory came back to me. I'm grateful for that!

The Apprentice takes place in 14th century London, and we follow Jonah, a young apprentice as he navigates life, work, politics, and love. One remark I've read about this novel is that the story is a bit naive, and I'm willing to agree. However, the amount of detail and research that have gone into the writing makes up for that. You'll learn a lot about guilds, international cloth trade, London markets, and 14th century status markers in detail when listening to The Apprentice.

What is less forgivable is the brutality. The novel mainly suffered from this in its first few chapters. I understand that rape and violence was prevalent in those days, but you have to be careful not to make it gratuitous when you write about it. The Apprentice crossed the line between "realistic violence that needs to be shown to explain what's happening" and "over the top violence used for shock value". It's extra awful when it's not just an audiobook and it's narrated, but radio theatre and the voice actress screams/wimpers as her character is being raped. I almost quit listening to the novel in those scenes.

Another thing I disliked about this production is the repetitive writing. The writing quality is simply not great - perhaps a consequence of this being a translation from German. Extra minus for awkward sex scenes.

Enough complaining! This production has got two great elements: the voice acting and the sound engineering. Douglas Booth as Jonah is amazing. We all know Douglas Booth is ridiculously handsome, but I did not know I could be so attracted to a voice as well (okay, that's a lie. I knew I could be attracted to voices. But I thought, "Douglas Booth is so handsome, he's never had to work on his voice sexiness." I was wrong - let's just say Douglas Booth's voice sexiness needs 0 additional work as it's already in peak condition.)


Sound engineering with some "background noise" and era specific music was also good to get you in the mood.

Summary: Not bad. The production (acting + engineering) is worth 4 stars, even if the writing/story only gets 2ish stars. Douglas Booth is a national treasure who should do more audiobooks.

I adored this radio drama. I've never listened to anything like it. I plan on buying parts 2 and 3 as they release, and it's crucial because part 1 ended on a cliffhanger!

Part 1 follows Jonah, a young cloth merchant's apprentice in 1330s London who unexpectedly comes into an inheritance that allows him to escape his abusive home life. I learned so much about the cloth trade, merchant guilds, and the political climate of the time. There is plenty of danger and intrigue to keep the story moving. I loved many of the characters (and passionately hated the baddies). I really appreciated that Jonah isn't perfect. He doesn't always treat his friends well or take the higher road, but ultimately I am desperate for him to make it in the world.

I heard of this drama because I'm a fan of Douglas Booth and he voices Jonah, but all the voice actors were wonderful and perfectly cast. The production quality is high, with sound effects and medieval music adding ambiance to the story. Another solid performance from Audible!

As another reader mentioned, this drama is definitely for adults. There is violence, rape, murder, sex, and numerous brothel scenes. None of this bothers me but I thought I would mention it since the drama is translated and there isn't a lot of information about it in English.

Ein sehr gut gemachtes Hörspiel - Die Story ist aber sehr typisch für Rebecca Gablé. Wieder haben wir einen jungen, aufstrebenden Protagonisten, der schnell enge Beziehungen zur Krone unterhält, sodass Fiktion und historische Ereignisse verknüpft werden können. Das Konzept hat viele Fans, aber ich stehe dem oft skeptisch gegenüber. Mich konnte noch keiner ihrer Historienschinken wirklich überzeugen. Dieser auch nicht so recht, weil die Personen viel zu "modern" agieren und die Charaktere selten wirkliche Weiterentwicklungen durchmachen. Schon die Waringham Protagonisten - von denen hier einer eine Nebenrolle spielt - sind durchaus austauschbar (finde ich). Trotzdem war das Hörspiel gute Unterhaltung und einem geschenkten Gaul... Am Ende fand ich es schade, nur den ersten Teil zu besitzen. Die Bücher würde ich nicht unbedingt lesen, aber in dieser Form war es angenehm zu konsumieren.

(Natürlich zähle ich Hörspiele nicht zu gelesenen Büchern, deshalb kommt es ins "Hörspiel Regal")

I actually never thought I would read something like this, in first place because something that combines a genre I am... not so drawn to (said very politely): contemporary. And then mixed with the medieval. I don't know man, just didn't sound that appealing to me.
Anyways, as you can see, I really liked it, against all the odds. That why you try new things guys!
I can't seem too place why exactly thou... Except: I can say that the protagonist is not your normal protagonist. If anything any other character around him would have been a protagonist of choice, if written by any other person. But no, we follow the most normal out of the bunch. The beacon for all the possible protagonists, who has to put up with theire protagonist problems and gets sucked into this. You could say.
It is a very pleasoned experience.

But for real. Can't you give him a break once??

Kurzweiliges Hörspiel in gewohnter Audible-Qualität mit vielen hochkarätigen Sprechern, wenngleich Erzähler Detlef Bierstedt hier sehr viel Raum einnimmt und die Szenen meist durch längere Erzähl-Passagen verknüpft werden – da sind andere Audible-Hörspiele insgesamt lebendiger und kommen ohne verbindenden Erzähler aus.

Die Story um den Aufstieg eines jungen Tuchhändlers in London entwickelt sich recht langsam, was einerseits zu erwarten ist angesichts der Tatsache, dass dies nur Teil 1 der "Jonah"-Hörspiel-Trilogie ist, andererseits fehlt aber aufgrund dieser Stückelung eine echte Spannungskurve. So endet dieses erste Buch mitten im Nirgendwo ohne Zwischen-Höhepunkt, was sich irgendwie unfertig anfühlt.

4 Sterne für die technische Umsetzung und die Sprecher-Qualität, 3 für die Geschichte selbst.

Die Sprecher sind fantastisch, die Produktion des Hörspiels ist es auch.
Die einzigen Minuspunkte sind, dass das Höespiel zu aprubt und ohne richtigen Schluss endet (weil der Roman in drei Hörspiele aufgeteilt wurde) und Jonah mir überhaupt nicht sympathisch war. Er benimmt sich wie ein kleines Kind, lässt sich ständig übers Ohr hauen und hat, auch wenn der Erzähler ständig etwas anderes beteuert, keinerlei Moral. Alles soll so gemacht werden, wie er das möchte, und zwar sofort. Geschieht nicht alles nach seinem Geschmack, sind natürlich alle anderen schuld..
Ansonsten war die Geschichte sicherlich kein Meisterwerk, aber trotzdem hat mich das Hörspiel in seinen Bann gezogen, was der "richtige" Roman sicher nicht geschafft hätte.

Loved the narration by Miriam Margolyes but there was one character who sounded suspiciously like Fifi the Flowertot.
The main character isn’t very sympathetic sometimes but he has a hard life in fourteenth century London as apprentice to his mean alcoholic cousin. I liked that the author made him say and do things I didn’t like because I still rooted for him.

The narrator and actors are very skilled, and listening to their voices is entertaining. This is a good Audible production with sound effects and music that really enhance the listening experience. However, the writing is cliched and repetitive. I gave a 4-star rating: the story and writing was 3-star, but the performance and production was 5-star.

Will I buy the 2nd part? Not right now. I would like to read/listen to something that is written slightly better. I will certainly buy it when I am in the mood for a frivolous listen, well recorded, entertaining but not intellectually stimulating. I will also assume that part 2 will also end on a cliffhanger, precipitously making me fall into part 3. I guess if that technique was good enough for Dickens, then it's good enough for Rebecca Gable.

This was a very well narrated (multiple narrators) book but I am afraid it just did not float my boat. I found it too earthy in some ways. Most of the MCs were as bad as another their actions just being dressed up differently. I have no desire to read the rest even with the supposed cliff hanger at the end.

I love historical novels but this one was a disappointment. I was expecting more details as well and more complex characters. The Apprentice is part of a trilogy and unfortunately, I wouldn't say it's a stand alone piece. One extra star for the good job the actors in the audiobook did.

Erstaunlicherweise fand ich es sehr interessant, obwohl dies eigentlich nicht mein Lieblingsgenre ist. Dennoch hat es mich sehr gereizt weiter zuhören und zu wissen wie es Jonah ergehr. Vielleicht hole ich mir wirklich auch die weiteren Teile :-)

Eigentlich ist das Hörspiel “Jonah – Die Lehrjahre” nicht nur das falsche Genre, sondern auch das falsche Medium, wenn ich meine bevorzugten Hörgewohnheiten betrachte. Aber dieses Hörspiel fand ich als kleines Weihnachtsgeschenk von Audible in meiner Bibliothek, so dass ich einen Blick riskiert habe.

Hörspiel par excellence

Dabei war ich kurz davor, es nach den ersten Minuten abzubrechen, weil es mir ein bisschen zu gemäßigt daherkam, obgleich ich hin und wieder auch mal gern historische Romane lese und höre und mich solch geruhsamen Anfänge nicht abschrecken. Aber dann zog die Geschichte an und ich bin dabeigeblieben. Und habe es nicht bereut.

Der erste Teil dieser Hörspiel-Trilogie entführt den Hörer in das London des 13. Jahrhunderts, wobei die Welt von der Autorin ein wenig romantisiert und verklärt dargestellt ist. Ich denke, dass die Zustände im mittelalterlichen London weitaus unschicklicher waren, als in dem Hörspiel dargestellt. Dies ist auch meine größte Kritik an dem Werk, denn dadurch lässt sich die Handlung in eine x-beliebige Zeit und an einen x-beliebigen Ort transportieren. Für einen Mittelalterroman ist für mein Geschmack zu wenig Mittelalter enthalten. Was das Buch allerdings nicht zwingend schlecht macht, denn die Erzählung von Aufstieg des jungen Jonah in der Gilde der Tuchhändler hat durchaus seinen Reiz.

Dem zugute kommt natürlich die hervorragende Hörspielproduktion, wobei der Erzählanteil vergleichsweise hoch ist. Hier kann auch der Sprecher Detlef Bierstedt überzeugen, der mir in Hörbüchern bisher weniger gut gefallen hat, vor allem, wenn er unterschiedliche Personen spricht. Dies muss er hier glücklicherweise nicht machen, denn ein sehr großes Team von bekannten (und weniger bekannten) Sprechern hat an dem Hörspiel mitgewirkt und macht es dadurch zu einer echten Empfehlung. Die Untermalung mit der passenden Musik und der dezente Einsatz von Geräuschen sind perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt.

Fazit

Ein wirklich gelungenes Hörspiel, das nach eigenen Angaben die Geschichte des Romans ungekürzt wiedergibt. Hervorragend produziert wird das Spiel in meinen Augen zu einem Hörgenuss, so dass mein größter Kritikpunkt, dass die dargestellte Welt eine zu romantisiert wird, in den Hintergrund rückt. Von mir bekommt die Produktion eine Empfehlung für Freunde aufwändig produzierter Hörspiele.

Very well produced audio drama but the central story is lacklustre and not very authentic.

This might be because the author is German and usually writes about British history to a German audience, in German.

As a Brit, there are jarring details that are just very inauthentic. For example, the title ‘Scarlet City’ - I’ve never heard of London ever be referred to in such a manner (and I’m a Londoner) yet in the series that’s the nickname attributed to the English capital.

There are many scenes which just sound like a German drama in a British setting.

More important than the inauthenticity is the fact that it’s just a pretty boring story. There is little character development, and most of them are very flat and stereotypical. The story plods along with unnecessarily long and in depth technical detail about the trade guilds and practices and methods of trading, dying wool etc etc.

Whilst this may excite a German audience, perhaps new to historical dramas and specifically English historical dramas, for a seasoned audio drama listener like me it doesn’t quite match up to, for example, the many BBC radio dramas both old and new

2 stars for the production quality and stellar cast - it can’t have been a small budget which makes it extra disappointing.

I suspect this is going to be one of those books you either love or hate. I listened to it as an audible drama production, the casting is excellent with Miriam Margolyes, Douglas Booth, Alison Steadman and the rest of the stellar cast giving stellar performances.

If I am honest I think you need a basic knowledge of the history and politics of the time (1330's) as not much is explained and given the complexity of events at that time it is helpful to know.

Thus far it is a not quite rags to some riches story, with a few hiccups on the way. Jonah, our hero, is not the most lovable of characters but does have a certain charm. There are some scenes which are disturbing and some may feel they need a little more condemnation, I am on the fence -abhorrent though it is to us now, at the time it was not regarded in the same way. Had this not been an audio drama I might feel a little differently but I can understand why it was handled as it was.

It is absorbing, not an audio book to listen to whilst trying to multitask with anything that requires your attention. I will not be trying to listen to the next part at work as it seriously messed up my productivity..

What a sensational production. Sensational is the word, because once I had pressed play and closed my eyes I was transported back to England during the early 1300's under the reign of King Edward III.
Had this been a production for tv, it would not have matched the realism that I experienced from this superb production, by closing my eyes and listening letting the story wash over me like warm waters on a tropical beach with a fast incoming tide.
Miriam Margolyes' narration was totally engaging, and the performance from the prestigious cast was out of this world.
This was a zero to hero tale of a young lad Jonah Durham, apprenticed to his unscrupulous cousin, Rupert a wool merchant. His life changes when his grandmother dies having bequeathed him her fortune.
This is a tale of mixed fortunes whilst Jonah learns some pretty hard lessons in life along the way.
I enjoyed every second of this and was sad when it came to an end. The good news is this was the first book of a trilogy, so lots more changes of fortune and skullduggery to come.
