The Hundredth Queen #4

The Warrior Queen

Rate this book
In the final volume of The Hundredth Queen Series, Kalinda will risk everything to save the man she loves.

Kalinda has brought peace to the Tarachand Empire, at least for now. Bhutas no longer need to hide their gifts. The last of the rebels have been banished. And Prince Ashwin is set to take over as rajah.

But for Kalinda, this all came at a great loss. Her childhood home. Her best friend. The love of her life.

Deven is still trapped in the Void, although he is able to find his way to Kalinda each night. He has been lucky so far — mortals are not meant to last in the Void for long, and Deven has lasted longer than most. But when he doesn’t visit her one night, Kalinda knows that his luck has run out.

She will do whatever it takes to save the man she loves, even if it means convincing a god to guide her through the Void. Freeing a mortal from the Void is nearly impossible, but Kalinda has never let those odds stop her before…

I enjoyed having a fun series to escape reality with. The Warrior Queen is a satisfying ending following 3 storylines that tie up all the loose ends and give us a happily ever after we wanted. The Kalinda arc explored the afterlife and the relationship between the mortals and the gods; the Ashwin arc (was probably the most entertaining) it dealt with political turmoil and a threat of rebellion; the Deven arc had the least amount of action as his story was one of reaction and survival.

Netgalley #63

Many thanks to Emily Griffin and Netgalley for the free copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Great way to end this series! This may have been my favorite of the four. A trip to the underworld, an impossible rescue, a coup, and kickass women warriors! Three points of view too. I read it in one day. Especially loved the fairy tale the Rani’s journey was based on. And the demons are quite original. Of course I never get enough of Bhuta powers. Excellent creation.
King discovered a magical kingdom inside her mind and brought to life in The Hundreth Queen series. I’m fortunate I have all four books. I’m sure I’ll find myself rereading this in the future.

***** 3.5 Stars *****

Cannot be read as a standalone.

Not really impressed. Decent ending to an interesting series.

Kalinda is trying to save Deven from the Void. Prince Ashwin is trying to unify his nation. Deven is trying to survive in the Void.

I think this series should have ended at the 3rd book (with a different ending). I've lost interest in the storyline and characters.

Oh this was such an improvement after the previous book! I love this one sooooo much better than Rogue Queen. That one I actually sort of hated. But this one has redeemed the series for me ^_^ It's definitely a 4.75 stars finale!!

Kali has improved immensely. Ashwin has moved on from his crush on her (thank the gods). I really loved him & Gemi together. They were so cute <3 And I also actually enjoyed reading Ashwin's chapters, which was a surprise considering that I haven't liked his character since he was first introduced in Fire Queen xD

He really had a lot on his plate that he was ill-prepared to deal with as the sudden ruler of Tarachand. There was so much for him to overcome from his father's reign and the ensuing bhuta coup. He had to learn things on the fly, step on some toes and ruffle plenty of feathers as he progressed through rebuilding Vanhi since the war, working out trade deals and foreign alliances, overseeing the plans for the new sisterhood temple being built in the city, wedding plans, and researching ways to possibly save Deven from the Void. Very, very busy and stressful. Through watching him struggle with all these expectations and pressure he really grew into his own and grew into a character I really enjoyed reading about. That's such an immense turn-around for me! And that alone just made me love this book.

Also this book deals with some very real life issues that are in the forefront of our modern news & politics: racism and equality for all. This book expertly weaves those issues into the plot, and shapes it into the real snarl of how truly it is. It's the underlying current that drives the story, how Ashwin and others are fighting to overcome it, to change centuries of hardened beliefs into something new and positive moving forward with the empire. The protests and violence that ensue, from the disagreeing perspectives of those for following the old ways versus those wanting to break away and follow a new path. It's all so realistically laid out, but in the end it is also brought to a satisfying conclusion with hope that these goals can be reached in the future, with time comes acceptance.

That really is the over all theme of this entire book, that one powerful, beautiful thing: hope. Hope to fight and free a lost love, the hope of meeting our beloved friends and family again, the hope for a better brighter future, the hope for equality and having the right to choose your own path, the hope for acceptance even though we're all different in every possible way. It's a wonderful message <3 And I'm grateful for the author for this beautiful book.

And of course I must give a shout-out for all the amazing #girlpower this series flaunts. We meet sooooo many fantastic women through the books, and they each get their time in the spotlight so we can know them better. I cherish them all! Natesa, Jaya, Eshana, Parisa, Shyla, Tinley, Indah, Kali, Gemi, Asha <3 <3 <3

I really loved how getting more backstory on Tinley in this final book, and of her growing friendship with Kali. I loved seeing Tinley's home kingdom and learning their beliefs, differing from the Tarachand's in some key places. We find out why she's banished herself from home, and your heart just aches for her.

There was of course some things I didn't like too. But they were effective plot devices that revealed a lot of secret background on Kali's past lives O_O Like wow! I really didn't like Cala, or Enlil for that matter. Both were trying to smother Kali, and chain her to a past she didn't want, trying to take away her right of choice in her own future. It was incredibly infuriating, but highly enlightening. We also learned this about Kali She is just a badass in ever life it seems lol. And it was so much fun uncovering those past lives/experiences. Some I suspected, but it was still great reading. And by the end, Cala & Enlil have grown to more likable characters by the time we say "goodbye" to them.

There were just so many wonderful aspects about this story that I absolutely loved! And it really is a perfect ending to the series. And I'm sad it's over. I'll definitely be re-reading them again in the future. And these covers! They're so gorgeous! Who wouldn't want to own them?

An epic conclusion to a standout debut YA fantasy series. It's no small task to develop character arcs, expand a world, and enrich a magic system over multiple books, and Emily R. King does it incredibly well. I love this series, and this last book exceeded my high expectations. Well done!

Here it is! The last volume in the Hundredth Queen Series! I've been waiting to read this book since the last book left me in such a hanging over the cliff place. This is a series I've been reading since the very beginning and it is always both exciting and sad to reach the end.

I have to say that this book was slow for me. I had a hard time staying invested in it, which seems awful to say. There were moments that I absolutely loved and the ending with everything wrapping up was good. Satisfying. But for me this book lacked the intensity and danger the other books had and it felt much less compelling. I don't know, I just didn't enjoy it as much.

But. It wasn't bad. There were a lot of things coming together which led to a great ending for this series. Overall this is a series that I've enjoyed and would recommend. Plus, these books are all on kindle unlimited with the audible narration which is AWESOME!! The first book, The Hundredth Queen (which was my favorite one), is just $1.99 (if you don't have KU) which is an awesome price and makes this the perfect time to see if this series is something you would enjoy.

Content: peril, mild violence, kissing

- I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher at my request. All opinions expressed are my own.

When you wish the author had a better grasp of words, when you find yourself comparing parts of the book to the movie Elf (I swear she went through the dark levels of the candy cane forest), when you sit there and go 'oh shut up', you know a series has outlasted its welcome and not lived up to the earlier promise.

Kalinda is whiny, Devan is kind of dead (not a spoiler since it happened last book), Ashwin is uninspiring, and the other characters are just hanging out. Random plot holes, wrong words used, sentence structure that had me wondering if there was an editor, and an eye rolling plot just had me hating this book by the end. I didn't care who lived or died and just wanted it over. I'm regretting the time I spent with this book, the last book and the whole series.

To all authors out there - TRILOGY. Give 3 tight books, not ones that just make fans into haters. Talk about a "Sea of Despair". UGH

3.5/5.0

Although this book was not my cuppa at all, the writing was great and the twists and turns keep one turning pages… so I just can’t bring myself to deduct more stars just because my personal preferences are vastly different. I don’t find stories about wandering through the underworld fighting various demons and gods particularly interesting. Nor do I really enjoy reincarnation stories where the main character is actually a host of other people. Or a prince who is so weak it is hard not to scream at the tablet.

IF those topics are some you don’t mind, this truly will be a book to indulge in and love. Because, like I said, it really is creative. The characters are wonderful and the writing flows easily.

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley.

Ehhhhh...I think that sums up my feelings on the entire series, especially The Warrior Queen. I was not all that impressed with this one, and out of them all it lacked the most action. There were some parts that dragged and seemed to take forever to happen. This isn't the kind of series that enraptures and whisks you away someplace special and magical. I don't know that there really needed to be a 4th book.

I really started to get sick of EVERY man being in love with Kali. Men literally threw themselves at her left and right, and I honestly didn't find her that interesting and I think that is why I struggled so much with this series. Don't even get me started on Deven. He was such a wet noodle of a character and love interest. I can almost compare him to Mal from Shadow and Bone, both boring and uninteresting characters whose only "saving grace" is the fact that they are eye candy.

I enjoyed Ashwin's perspective...but I found him boring as well. I understand how he wanted nothing to be like his father, but he was a character that lacked balls.

Would I recommend this? Eh...I guess if you are looking for something entertaining and quick to read. I enjoyed books 2 & 3.

Kalinda is descended from the Bhuta line, where they are half gods.To help protect the people of the kingdom that they live in.Deven was taken into the underworld, the void where he slowly fades away, wasting before her eyes as his memory of her fades until he no longer remember who she is.
Kalinda travels to help save him into the void where she finds out about her past lives, one of that as Cala, who loved the fire god,and innana the goddess who fell in love with the mortal man and chose to bring him back from the void. She is almost too late when the god helps to place deven's soul into his body's reincarnate giving them a chance together.

*ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

The most beautiful and emotional end to a series I have ever read. Emily R. King wields magic through her words.

SPOILER FREE

“You are a warrior. You were born to shine. Embrace how powerful you truly are and carve your destiny from the sun.”

P L O T

Even hours after I finished reading this book all I could say was “WOW”. I’m like Howie Mandel from America’s Got Talent after that one performance and all he could say was “WOW”. All everyone in the audience could utter was “WOW”. WOW! What a book and what an ending!

Kalinda is looking for a way to get to Deven and free him, Deven is trying to get out of the Void because he’s running out of time, and Ashwin is trying to get his empire in order with a commander spreading lies about his decisions and the people refusing to accept the changes.

We visit Tinley’s place and witness the beauty of Paljor. She also has a role to play in this story. There’s also this one character that doesn’t seem to stay dead. Like dude! Could you just stay where you are?

This book is so emotional and I cried multiple times when I’m not fanning over Ashwin but there are times where I’m crying for Ashwin. (I ship myself with Ashwin and it is not up for debate.)

Love and duty require sacrifice.

C H A R A C T E R S

Kalinda

We uncover more of Kalinda’s past because she doesn’t know her place in this world. She’s no longer a Rani even though people still treat her like one, and she doesn’t want to be a ruler and marry Prince Ashwin. My history teacher always told us to “learn from the past” and that’s what Kali’s adventure was about. And her past is nothing I’ve ever imagined.

“The past reminds us where we were so we may understand where we must go.”

Captain Deven Naik

In the beginning of the series I liked Deven, I shipped him so hard with Kalinda but I don’t know what changed. I guess Ashwin’s appearance did that. (Hahaha I really don’t know.) I wouldn’t want to be him getting stuck in the Void, it’s such an awful place! His journey is about survival and getting the hell out of the Void before his life is over.

I must remember there is more to my life than the dark.

Prince Ashwin

I’ve always been rooting for him. I don’t think I shipped him with Kalinda but I always liked him more than Deven. (Sorry not sorry Captain) There’s so much pressure on him and I just want to wrap him up in a fluffy sheet and hug him for all eternity.
I didn’t think he’d be the type to be so clueless about love. But stepping back and seeing the big picture, he grew up without a mother and Rajah Tarek gave him cuts in his back. So he didn’t really know what love is.

“From hardship comes great blessings and strength.”

W R I T I N G

Written in three points of view shifting among Kalinda, Deven, and Ashwin. Each of them have their own journey to take and challenges to face. I can’t rank who’s path was hardest, we’re not put in a path that we can’t travel by. The level of difficulty always depends on our inner strength and each person has a different strength.

Love how it came to a full circle. We started in Tarachand, we end in Tarachand. Also Kali’s sketches from the very beginning makes sense now.

Everyone had closure, except for that one demon. I just couldn’t think of a better ending for our lovely characters’ story.

“You will always be powerful, no matter your physical form. Strength dwells in the soul.”

O V E R A L L

I can’t express how much I love this book and most of all the entire series. Emily R. King gave us a wonderful gift, as impossible as having powers may be the message is clear and the advice and wise words she leaves in her works are just as real. That’s one of the main things I love about this series.

Women raised to be warriors but now that the war is over and a different prince leads them to a better world these women don’t know what to do with themselves.

“These women know how to survive--you can teach them how to live.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I want to see this made into a TV series or a movie. It’s so bad-ass, it’s full of heartfelt messages, has enough drama, thrills, and magic. Though this final book can be tricky with Kali having to talk inside her head (Read the book to get what I mean) but hey, if you’ve seen the movie adaptation of The Host by Stephanie Meyer, it worked well.

I’m hoping for a spin-off with one of the new couples in this book but most of all I cannot wait for the author’s upcoming series Evermore Chronicles coming soon.

“No matter how bleak the world may seem, or how mighty the night, dawn always comes.”

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, which had some really inventive world-building. I like a book set in a harem, with concubines and wives jostling for prime position, and The Hundredth Queen made that way more literal, by having the women physically battle for rank. This was really clever and led to some really exciting politics within the harem. However, with the death of the rajah at the end of the first book, I feel that this series lost what made it so entertaining to me. It would have worked really well as a standalone story.

The Warrior Queen is the fourth book in the series, and by this point Kalinda has come so far from being the scrawny weak girl she was at the beginning of the first book. She's discovered that she has Burner powers (control over fire), and embraced her relationship with her former guard, Deven. Unfortunately, Deven has been trapped in the Underworld, so Kalinda must fight to get him back. Katabasis myths are very interesting to play with, and like the rest of this series, this book does an interesting job of reworking real-world mythology into something new.

The trouble with this is that for me, the characters aren't interesting enough to compel me through the very long-winded plot. In the first book, the plot was exciting enough that it didn't matter that I found Kalinda very cliche - she's the quintessential YA heroine with a special talent, a ton of pluck and a whole lot of self-esteem issues. I also don't care at all about Deven, who is your standard stoic-soldier-with-a-troubled-past-and-a-kind-heart, or Ashwin, the prince-who-is-so-different-to-his-tyrannical-father. So the introduction of the other viewpoint chapters was not my favourite thing (I also didn't think their voices were differentiated enough, and often got confused as to whose chapter I was in).

It's a strong finish, if you enjoyed the second and third books - personally, I didn't love it, but I think those who love Kalinda will be thrilled with this.

Darkness holds secrets few see or seek. But when one spends as much time as I do studying the shadows, they reveal unique textures that brush over my skin.

4 Stars.

After the decline in me liking books two and three I aticipated to like this one, but not as much as the first one. I believed that this series did not need a fourth book and man was I wrong. This conclusion was everything I could have wished for and I think this is my favourite out of the four, together with the first one. I loved how the plot developped and shifted between the characters, it showed not only a romance, but also political intrige and deviance and I really liked that. The ending made me feel bittersweet, but I really enjoyed it. All in all a great ending to a good series and I am excited for what Emily R. King will do next!

Even with the disappointment of the previous installment not being the finale, I was too invested in the series and characters not read the conclusion. Thankfully, there is indeed a proper ending to the story arc. This could have easily been a two or three book series, much of the last two books felt unnecessary. I enjoyed the story, but it was overshadowed by too many endless plots.

I would not discourage anyone from trying this series, but it isn't one I recommend either. Overall, the subsequent books never captured the magic and adventure of the first.

Thank you to NetGalley and Skyscape for my advanced review copy.

A challenging journey but rewarding conclusion to the series

I thoroughly enjoyed The Hundredth Queen series by Emily R. King. I loved the characters and all their connections. I appreciated the unique setting, religion, and magic system introduced. In some ways, it vaguely reminded me of the world and abilities in Avatar: The Last Airbender, which I love, so it was a nice comparison for me.

In this last installment of the series, the war has ended and they are trying to pull the empire back together and fix the things that were broken and twisted by Tarek's reign. The people still hold on to brainwashed beliefs, like that bhutas are demons and that ranis should be claimed and battle each other for rank and worth. Ashwin, Kalinda, and their friends are working to change these ideas within the residents and guards of the palace as well as the people in the kingdom. There is dissention and desertion in the ranks of guards and ranis. Meanwhile, Kali is mostly focused on finding a way to free Deven from the Void and helping him survive long enough for her to save him, while dealing with her other losses of confidence, drawing skills, and diminished Burner abilities with the loss of her hand when she helped to defeat Kur and send him back to the Void. So there is a lot of struggle, doubt, hopelessness, and trials to overcome in this final book.

Without really giving away anything, here's a brief glimpse at the direction of this last book:

Ashwin struggles with his confidence and abilities in taking command of his empire, earning his people's trust, respect, and loyalty, and making drastic changes to the empire to embrace bhutas and restore the original purpose of the Sisterhood temples and wards. A former commander leads the dissenters against him and twists his words and intentions to suit his agenda of keeping the empire as it was. It doesn't help that not all the ranis and courtesans and imperial guards agree with his decisions to change things, and they cause trouble for him from the inside as well. Also, he has chosen a Trembler and princess of another nation as his first wife to secure foreign support and trade and further show his intentions to reintegrate bhutas, which causes much contention among the people and ranis. Ashwin refuses to become like his father and reign in tyranny, oppression, violence, and prejudice, and will not stand for the injustices in the treatment of bhutas, foreigners, and even the capable sister warriors. Kalinda has helped him develop many ideas for reform of what was wrong with the empire and the Sisterhood. Although the people no longer accept her as their Kindred because she is a Burner, Ashwin still believes in her strength and resolute determination to fix the empire and needs her support. He continues his struggle to retain his power and improve his kingdom, but Kali may not be able to help him in her current physical and emotional state after her fight with Kur and losing Deven to the Void.

Kalinda becomes obsessed with figuring out how to enter and secure safe passage through the Void to rescue Deven before he succumbs and suffers eternal death without reincarnation. The only one who can guide her is a god, so she must seek their help by finding the home of the gods, Ekur. Needless to say, she manages to do this (otherwise there would be no book, so this isn't a spoiler), and learns more about her past lives, her own limits and abilities and courage, and the strength of her love and attachment to Deven. It's a rough journey, and as expected, they barely manage to survive. But there is a deeper plot that connects the ruler of the Void and realm of mortals, which Kali and her guide discover and must stop...

I do have to point out a few things that bothered me about this book and this series. I feel like the quality of editing slipped slightly from the first to the last book. I noticed several typos and errors by the end. Nothing huge, but they do trip me up when reading and I come across one and my brain skids to a halt to say, "Wait, what? Did that sound weird to you?" I have to be honest, even small typos bother me and pull me from the story, though I understand how difficult it is to catch every single wrong letter that slips through. Just saying what bothered me. Also, certain themes came across as rather pushy and unnatural, as if forcing a modern viewpoint into the story to please the modern reader. I understand that this doesn't take place in any specific time period or location in the real world, but at times it was obvious that certain aspects were really just included to please a wide audience of readers and not necessarily because it worked naturally in the story. That's just me though.

Overall, a challenging, soul-searching struggle but rewarding conclusion to a captivating, entertaining, unique fantasy series.

This is how you write a finale. I will admit the beginning was slower than I anticipated which made me put down the book for a day or two, but my curiosity made me pick it back up and I’m glad I did. It was a slow burn, building little by little allowing the reader to put the pieces in place. Once I got started again I did not want to stop reading. The closer to the ending I got the slower I read because I did not want the story to end.
I greatly appreciate the themes of love, women’s independence and of showing that a woman does not need a man to be great or useful. I love the sisterhood, loyalty of friends and the trust the characters had in each other. How much better a community is when people work together and not against each other. That’s powerful.
It’s an empowering read and, in some ways, parallel in the some of the social injustice we face today. People allowing their fear to justify their hate and animosity to dictate how they view others who are different than them.
The writing was intriguing, at a good pace and never rushed, though sometimes I wanted it to be. For a four-book series, I must say I was never bored, impatient, but never bored. I highly recommend the series to young and old as we all can learn something from the determination of Kali.

Starker Einstieg - schwaches Ende

+ magische Elemente (who doesn't love some dragons made out of fire?)
+ starke FMC (wenn auch nicht durchgehend)
+ tolle starke, Nebencharaktere (und deren tierische Begleiter)

Warrior Queen is fun, exciting, gripping and incredible. After Kalinda has brought peace back to the empire, Bhutas are no longer afraid to keep their gifts hidden and Prince Ashwin can take his place as Rajah. However, the price came at a cost and loss for Kalinda; her home, her best friend and the love of her life. Deven is trapped in the Void and though he can still find his way to Kalinda every night, his time is running out as he encounters demons within the Void. Kalinda will do whatever it takes to save Deven, even if it means convincing a god to guide her. Overall Warrior Queen was an emotional amazing ending to a fun series. I enjoyed it. It has been a fun journey and can’t wait to re-read it again.

Final book of the series. Finally a little closure to end the book and series. Reaching full potential has been something that has eluded kalinda for the first 3 books. Will she find it in this one? With devin missing and kalinda unable to let go and move on, we find ourselves at an impasse that only deepens the storyline. I give this book 4.25, mainly because I'm happy to finally have the closure I have sought the entire series. Adding a 3rd main character's outlook to the storytelling allows for a new view towards the series. Great ancient gods added into the series in book 3 and dont disappoint in this one. I would recommend this book to my friends.
