Adamant: Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions

Rate this book
By ancient definition, the adamant was known as both a diamond and a mythical stone of indestructible wonder. In more modern terminology, it describes a posture of unshakeable resolve and determination. If there was ever a time for us to be adamant about love and truth it is now. God is Love. God is Truth. Both love and truth are timeless, transcending our current trends and opinions. Sometimes the most loving thing we will ever do is to speak the truth, but speaking truth begins with living it.

Using the mediums of Scripture and story, New York Times bestselling author Lisa Bevere takes listeners on a journey into the Mountain of God, to the one place they can learn not only to abide in God's unshakeable truth and love, but become adamant--people who are unmovable, determined, and steadfast. With conviction and passion, Lisa unpacks the concept of the adamant for listeners, linking together the grand story of Scripture and God's purpose in their lives. Listeners will see that God's plan is revealed as we dwell in him, it is there that we are forged and shaped. As we abide in Christ our Cornerstone we are shaped into the image of the adamant.

This book took me longer to read than it normally takes me. Not because it was hard to get through, but because it was so good and so profound, I wanted to absorb each and every word!

This book takes us through the truth of who God is and, in turn, who we are in Him. Each and every chapter shows us the truth of God and how we need to stand on the Rock of Jesus and not be swayed by the worldly cares around us.

My favorite quote from this book is, "The Rock is our strength, our sure footing in a world littered with gravel." This really epitomizes the whole book for me. Jesus is everything - our truth, our Adamant. Everything else is just gravel that we will never have sure footing on.

My favorite chapter was on transformation. As one who is always striving to do better, this chapter was especially encouraging because it is through the strength of God that we can transform. She also shares how important it is to pause and ponder and that's something that I have lacked in my very busy life.

I absolutely love this book and will be reading it again. There's so much truth to be gleaned from this book and it truly is life and heart transforming because Lisa is sharing God's Word and that's always the best thing. She explains things so well and has so many wonderful statements throughout this book that really stick with you. I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Did you know the word adamant actually started out as a noun? We tend to think use it now as more of an adjective or adverb, as a stubbornness or firmness, likely depending on whether you are the one using the word about someone else or about yourself!! :) :) I am adamantly opposed to being called stubborn, for example. Anyway, the original word adamant started as a noun and was the name of a mystery stone, an elusive mineral hypothesized by the Greeks. It was to be a stone that would be impenetrable and unbreakable. The diamond has been the closest thing to this adamant and occasionally the two words are used interchangeably.

So take this new meaning and think of Jesus. He is our Adamant, the rock that will not break, our security, if you will. "Real truth is a rock. Adamant. Indivisible. Immovable. Invincible. Jesus is truth. And I propose that Jesus is the Adamant." And from that, Lisa builds a book around standing strong for what is truth and right. Her chapter titles include Adamantly Intimate, Adamantly Constant, Adamant in Love, Adamant in Hate, Adamant for Truth, Adamant Transformation and so on.

I found her writing encouraging and challenging. In her chapter called Adamant in Hate, she calls on us to hate the things that God hates, not to endorse everything that comes along. This is not to say that we hate people, but we hate things. She also has a chapter entitled Adamant that We Love, so that covers loving people. And that love for people isn't just a mindless statement, it's reaching out and making a difference because we genuinely cared and were concerned. I just really appreciated her firm stand on truth and on the Bible. Yes, I won't say I agreed 100% with everything, but overall I would feel that Lisa is very Bible-based and solid in her writing, at least in this book.

"The concept of pondering and pausing to worship has become a lost art."

"We ran from the restraints of a loving Father only to discover ourselves shackled to ruin."

I enjoyed this book and will look for more books from her.

Bevere realizes the word adamant has special meaning. It indicates a diamond kind of stability. Jesus is our rock, our adamant. Simon had his name changed to Peter, rock. God is adamant in His love and mercy toward us. Surprisingly, God is also adamant in His hate. Bevere writes about our being adamant too, such as in our speaking.

I found much in this book that was not new to me. It is a good reminder of God's rock solid love and mercy. Bevere also encourages readers to be rock solid in our Christian life and character. I would have liked some practical tips and suggested actions to help readers put her teaching into practice. There are a couple of Appendixes filled with useful Scriptures.

My favorite part of the book was the section on the distinction between truth and what is true. I had never thought of this before. What is true could be true for the moment, such as that it is not raining right now. But truth is for all time and all people. What a great distinction.

This book is good for Christians who have difficulty believing God loves them unconditionally. Bevere shares stories from her own experiences and stories from the Bible to illustrate her teaching.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

About this book~ ” WHAT IS TRUTH?

This has become the defining question of our time. But while everyone has an opinion, truth, it seems, is getting harder and harder to find. Perhaps that’s because we are searching for something when we should be looking for someone.

TRUTH HAS A NAME.

Mare ancient than time and more present than this moment, truth is not a river that changes with the cultural currents, but a rock- immovable, invincible, unshakable- and the cornerstone of all we are and ever dream to be.

Theologically deep yet intimately accessible, Adamant, will be an anchor for your soul in a raging sea of opinions, giving you a clear sense of direction in a wandering world.”

Profanity/Violence~ None

Sexual Content~ Mentions of prostitutes, sex addicts, transgender, same-sex relationships, heterosexual, asexual, and sex. Discussion of abortion, discussion of pornography and fornication.

Other~ None

Age Recommendation~ 13+

My Opinion~ Mrs. Lisa Bevere has definitely got some talent! This book was a very deep, reflectional (is that a word?) book. The way she wrote this book was very intimate and personal, making the reader laugh at times, and at others…making them realize that they are not perfect by any means, but that Jesus loves you so much. For me personally, when she talked about being holy, it made me want to be holy like Jesus is. I want to be a light for Him. I feel like this book is definitely geared towards women, and I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for truth in this world full of falsehood. There were times when I got confused and I misunderstood what she was saying, and I had to go to my mom for some clarity, but I absolutely loved how she showed her own story in this book. I also got to learn something I never knew about the Middle East (no spoilers here 😉 ).

* My thanks to the publisher for this book in exchange for an honest review.

A special thanks to Revell Books for sending me a complimentary copy of Lisa Bevere’s book, Adamant: Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions.

Lisa Bevere’s new book, Adamant: Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions, could not come at a better time for this post-modern society in which we find ourselves. I learned so much about the long history of “adamant” and what exactly it means to be adamant today. Bevere not only discussed familiar topics but she did not shy away from tackling the difficult and challenging truths of God’s Word. So often we only hear about one aspect of God but Bevere was bold in describing the multiple facets of the character of God. What does it mean to be adamant in both love and hate? Does that sound contradictory? What about in reference to the subtitle? To quote Pilate, “What is truth?” Is there such thing as truth? As the world continues descend into evil and to apply lethal pressure to believers to adapt or outright abandon truth what will we do? In the midst of such pressures as social media bullying, teaching from liberal churches, and antagonistic friends and family members are we adamant for truth? I strongly encourage you to pick up Lisa Bevere’s new book to refresh your soul and remind yourself what it means to be adamant.

"In a world where truth slips and slides according to the latest popular trend and current culture, wouldn't it be nice to have something that was constant?
Immovable?
Invincible?
Unchanging?"
This is actually my first time reading a book written by Lisa Bevere even though I've heard a lot about heard along with her husband, John Bevere. The two of them have written a lot of books in the past but somehow I was never drawn to any of them. However, when I saw the title and subtitle for this book, I was instantly intrigued. First of all, I never heard of the term adamant before reading this book—so I have to look it up in the dictionary 😂. Secondly, the subtitle that says 'Finding truth in a universe of opinions' really resonates with me. I personally think social media has taken the world by storm and that's where a lot of different opinions go around. In this day and age, I strongly agree that we need to hold on to the unchanging truth so that we will not be easily shaken. And in this book, Lisa Bevere elaborates on how our God is adamantly intimate, constant, in love, for truth, in Word, in transformation, and in holiness. Each chapter is profoundly encouraging and full of biblical references that points us to the truth.
"People fail us.
People fail to see us.
We fail people and fail to see each other the way Jesus sees us.

But for all our days, we must honor Jesus, for he never disappoints. He was tested without faltering or failing. Jesus is committed to loving his flawed bride, the church, into radiance and readiness. Shouldn't we do the same?"
One of my favorite chapters in this book is the one titled Adamant Transformation. At the start of this chapter, Lisa Bevere talks about judging other people. To be honest, I've struggled with being judgemental for a very long time and I'm still trying my best to control it whenever I can. This chapter definitely felt like a slap on my face and it was a much needed reminder for me personally. She quoted Matthew 7:1-5 about pointing out a speck in other people's eye but not noticing the log that's in our own eye. That's why this chapter encouraged us to acknowledge the log in our own eye and deal with our own issues so we can help rather than continue to hurt others. We simple have to remove those logs and then act accordingly. 'Transformation begins as we own our issues and choose to live the truth. Transformation is not measured by the truth we know but is reflected in the truth we live.'

Another favorite of mind is the chapter called Adamantly Constant. The idea that God is always the same yesterday and today and forever always gives me assurance. Reading this chapter has certainly reaffirm me that God will never change and is always constant. I like how in this chapter Lisa Bevere gives an example of her relationship with her children to illustrate that inconsistency will create confusion and even make her sons disobedient. Unlike our human nature, God is constant and consistent in his nature. That assures us that God is always good and always does good; and there is absolutely no reason for us to allow doubt to shadow our thinking.
"One thing God cannot do is lie.
He will not repeat the lies others have spoken over you.
He will not allow a lie you've spoken over yourself to be called truth.
He will not allow a label to be your limit. In his presence, every label falls away, even the ones you've written on yourself."
"God doesn't change. He doesn't need to change. He is committed. He is all in. His response to us is based on who he is rather than who we are or are not. Thank God, because if God changed, we would all be in trouble." There are so many more things that I got from this book and I was also reminded of a lot of things through everything that was written in this book. I absolutely love this book and will definitely be reading it again in the future. Adamant has surely encouraged me and assured me with the truth of God's Word and God's adamant character. It is always comforting to know that the God that I know and believe in is unchanging and is always true at all times 😊.
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."—(Hebrews 13:8)"

At first, I felt the ideas presented in the chapters seem disconnected. But on reading the last page, I now feel the book is a mosaic that on completion reveals something very beautiful. There are some hard truths here that are stretching me in a season I already felt stretched, but I know I’m called to be adamant about staying in the truth, about renewing my mind, about trusting, about loving and about falling back on the rock of my foundation in a world full of siren-calling distraction. I suggest reading the first two chapters of 1 Peter several times during this study. It brought me back to the main theme, which is that Jesus is our Stone, when I felt a little lost about where the book was heading.

In reading the book jacket, I really felt like I was going to enjoy this book. I read 43 pages and do not intend to finish this book. The book did not seem to have a clear path or purpose and did not engage me. I enjoyed the historical references and definition of Adamant. I was rather offended by page 17 concerning a couple of passages "We are realists who have learned that stars are nothing more than luminous vapor", "We have walked upon the barren moon and sent probes into the deep, dark caverns of the ocean floor. We have demystified much of what once inspired wonder." I completely disagree with these statements.....I am and know others that are still in awe and wonder of our universe....stepping upon the moon and discovering what Mars has to hold is exciting and by no means demystified. More "the highly educated often lack both purpose and opportunities." Do they? This is a broad sweeping statement that is very subjective. That being said if you are lost and this book helps you find your way - wonderful. Style of writing and perception of the author is not to my taste.

This is a book that this generation needs to read. Bevere boldly speaks the truth, of which every statement is founded upon the Scriptures. I thoroughly enjoyed her call to holiness, and her reminder that we aren't out to gain popularity or give our opinions (which are so many), but that we are simply to live out the unpopular gospel message and not sway from the convictions of the Holy Spirit. This book is so relevant as Bevere touches a lot on social media and the danger/cautions we must take in our daily walk/ministry/relationships with one another. Highly recommend!

Sometimes it is hard to find the words to describe a non-fiction book that challenged you, inspired you, and made you think in new ways. . . You want to tell everyone why they should read the book too, but can’t exactly put into words how it affected you and why it will affect them. “Adamant: Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions” is bestselling author Lisa Bevere’s new release from Revell, and is unquestionably a book that is destined to influence women of all ages, initiate lasting change, and inspire the quest for truth within our hearts.

I absolutely love the overarching concept of this book: the Adamant. In the first chapter Lisa explains how this word, which began as a noun, is based in ancient and mythical history. It represented an elusive mineral that, as revealed in legends, was impenetrable and unbreakable; hard beyond measure and yet irresistible; simultaneously attractive and repellant; capable of gathering light and redirecting the rays; and so much more. For millennia, people have searched for this mythical adamant but always failed. . . Unless, Lisa asks, “What was the origin of this quest? Was this concept of the adamant a seed of inspiration planted by God? Why dream of what no one had yet seen, and why refer to the unknown? Or is this stone among us and unrecognized... Could the purpose of the adamant be to mine what is hidden within us... something that was constant? Immovable? Invincible? Unchanging... In Christ, all that the Greeks and the mystics looked for was realized. He is our Rock, our Cornerstone, and our long-awaited Adamant.”

Lisa then goes on to passionately share her God-inspired knowledge and wisdom of how we can incorporate this concept of the Adamant into our lives in ways that will transform the world, beginning inside us, with love, truth, our words, holiness, and more. As she shares, she holds nothing back. Tough issues are discussed in detail, and it honestly takes courage to read this book and let it sink into your heart. But if we truly listen for the messages that God has specifically for each of us, I think we will all be able to “Live in wonder of the immovable, invincible, impervious, adamant Cornerstone who longs to astound you with his loving faithfulness.”

I wholeheartedly recommend this transformative book, and encourage you to step into the pages and begin to discover the depths of the True Adamant for yourself... It has been with us, inside of us, for always, and it will give us the courage to dream that we too can be adamant, immovable, invincible women. Adamant daughters of our Lord.

It seems like these days, the truth has become subjective. It's everybody for themselves and whatever we want to change is becoming changeable. We are no longer adamant, resolute or steadfast in knowing what to believe anymore.

In a world full of changing tides, Lisa Bevere believes now more than ever that we must be firm in what we believe is the truth, and where we are finding our truth. In Adamant: Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions, Bevere reminds us that Jesus Christ is the thing on which we should stand resolute. She points towards scripture that reminds us that He is our cornerstone and the base upon which we build everything we know. Without Jesus, nothing makes sense.

This is the second book I've read by Bevere, and once again, I've been struck by the amount of scripture she utilizes. With well-documented research, Bevere encourages the reader to study scripture for themselves to see if what she is proposing to us in Adamant stands firm. I point out this fact not because I think Bevere needs to do more research as a female author, but because I myself have sought to study and understand Scripture in a similar way. It was encouraging to my soul to see another female author seek out information that has often felt unattainable, even in an era where equal rights for women are touted on a non-stop basis. I was fascinated to learn the depth of the meaning of the word adamant and how it relates to scripture. Knowing the full story of the adamant stone brings a fuller picture to the idea of Jesus. He is our indestructible and resolute adamant stone. The truth on which we base everything we believe.

Adamant is a rallying cry to go back to scripture. For us as women to dig into scriptures. To find what God expects of us as we live our daily lives. I finished this book challenged to spend more time reading scripture and studying scripture. To really dig in and know what I believe and why I believe. I found myself wanting to be more resolute in the things that I believe and why I believe them. I found within me a stronger need to be resolute in understanding the truth within scripture and finding words to articulate those truths.

Adamant will point you back towards scripture. And it will give you some truths to be able to put into practice in your own life. And all of it stands on the cornerstone of our faith - Jesus Christ.

My Review:

Lisa Bevere in her typical all knowing truth fashion delivers a literary masterpiece. She takes Biblical truths and knocks it out pf the proverbial ballpark. Adamant, is not only an adjective but an actual noun. It means much more than we all realize and the author goes about showing us all of this in a very fundamental way. A way in which you will never forget.

The definition of adamant is refusing to be persuaded--this is something we should all strive to be, especially when we are talking about one's spiritual journey or walk in this life. Forged in Christ--unmovable and unshaken. Christ is that to us and what better way can we give Him the same courtesy. As we let God transform us into what He needs and wants us to be we learn many things about Him and ourselves and Adamant shows us how.

Everyone thinks of the word adamant as being stubborn and refusing to change. This is really not true. The origins of the word adamant date back to early times when man was looking for the indestructible element. One that nothing could destroy. Diamonds, the hardest rock know to man, was called the adamant stone for many years until it was discovered that it could be melted at a high enough heat.

So, what could be adamant. ?There is only one and He is God. God is every constant, indestructible, and the source of all truth because God is truth.... perfect, irrefutable truth.

We are asked to be willing to accept that truth is based on personal feelings and desires. We are asked to accept that truth is individual and not universal. These are the lies we are being fed in a world where "do what thou wilt" has become the overriding and accepted mantra.

As daughters of God we are called to be adamant in a loving way. We are called to stand for truth, despite the shifting sands in today's world that call us to bend, accept and allow what ever whim calls us to move away from the truth. We are called to be adamant and not back down and yet love those who do. We are called to be the adamant stones God asks us to be as his daughters. I doing so we proclaim the truth of the one true Adamant as He wants us to proclaim it. We are called to love others enough to stand firm and display the truth of our Adamant Father.

This is a clear, well written book that has much to offer. Lisa's work is based on Biblical principles with scripture to support every element in her writing. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Do you ever use the word adamant? What are you adamant about? Did you know the word began as a noun? An invincible stone, adamas in Greek. Weapons formed out of this material wouldn’t break in battle. They were invincible, unchanging, and forever. Ms. Bevere calls Christ our adamas. He is our rock, our cornerstone, invincible, unchanging and forever. I loved this picture! He is the only thing we can rely on fully. He is the only one who can be trusted. The book lays out all the reasons Christ is the only adamant. He is adamantly intimate and constant. He is adamant in love and in hate. He is adamant that we love; adamant for truth. He calls for adamant transformation. We are adamant in Christ. The author finishes by charging the reader to be adamant in Christ for Christ in this world of chaos and opinions. We have the truth of Christ in us. It’s calling out wanting to be given to those around us. We are called to share the truth of Christ with others. This book helps us be confident in who Christ is and who he made us to be. Through scripture, personal experience and wisdom gained over years of Bible study, Bevere shares her heart with the reader in a loving, gentle but firm way. I loved this book and know you will too! The chapters are a little long for my liking and I think it would make it easier to read if they were broken up a little more. But take your time, read slowly, and glean from all the golden nuggets you will find in this book.

Everyone has their own opinion of the definition of truth.  Is it relative? Is it absolute? Is it based on God's Word? Is it different today than it was 50 years ago? 2000 years ago?  Does truth change with the culture?  Does it change with the times?  But, maybe, Truth is a Person.

"Adamant" by Lisa Bevere explores Truth as a Someone rather than a something.  The subtitle, "Finding Truth in a Universe of Opinions", led me to believe that "Adamant" would identify truth from our false beliefs or opinions, such as our society seeking tolerance over the truth of God's Word.  That was a wrong assumption.  It isn't until chapter 6, entitled "Adamant in Hate", that I understood the direction of Bevere's book.  Chapter 6 was the best chapter in the book.  Chapter 7, "Adamant in Truth", was a close second.  We are called to love. Sometimes our convictions get in the way.  Jesus is Truth. He modeled the way we are to treat others in view of truth.  Bevere's book teaches us how to look for better ways of debating truth with those around us.

`Adamant` is a women's Christian living book by author Lisa Bevere. Lisa describes adamant as: immovable, impervious, and unyielding. Adamant was first known as an unknown stone. She says Christ is our Adamant or Living Stone (Pg#17). I learned that just as stars declared the coming of Jesus, our Cornerstone, ancient builders used the stars to align the cornerstone of a building.

In the book, we see that God's love for us is not dependent on us. His love is steadfast, He does not waver. I believe the author wrote this book to the church as a whole. Lisa says, `For too long we have been known for what we are against rather than what and even whom (Jesus) we are for` Charles Spurgeon wrote, ` We are bound to love our enemies, but we are not bound to love God's enemies.` (see page# 131)

At the back of the book, Lisa has a whole section devoted to lessons from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Some of the lesson topics are `Words can refresh and restore life or hide what it takes`, `The mouth of a fool gets him in trouble`, `The truth will always outlive a lie`, etc.

I recommend this book to all women who may be searching for something more.

This book shook me, rocked me, made me mad, awakened me.

This book reminded me of how far I have come from being intimate with Jesus. I’m not anymore and it make me said.

As Lisa wrote her words penetrated my heart and awakened things that have been asleep for years now. I was mad because I didn’t like the reflection I saw in the mirror but I know it was necessary. I needed to see all I am forgotten.

So much truth in this book, I will share a bit with you.

Page 131: “We are so afraid of being accused of being judgmental that we have gone mute.” Uh, yes!!

Page 132: “Love without truth is a lie.” Oh my, I could write a whole separate post on this thought.

On page 135 Lisa quotes G.K. Chesterton: “G.K. Chesterton said, ‘Tolerance is the virtue of a man without convictions.’ I fear we’ve chosen to tolerate things that will one day threaten to overwhelm us. We must always be kind and respectful, but the silence of tolerance can quickly morph into endorsement.”

If you want more I highly recommend this book. Wake up with me. Remember the great love our Father has for us and let’s step into the truth that is ours to rise up from.

A copy of this book was given to me through the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Meh.

I love Lisa Bevere and was eager to get some nose to the grindstone truths from the book. I guess what I imagined this book to be and what it actually IS to be is quite different.

I assumed upon reading this book, I would have some hands on take aways. Some true biblical "life application" steps that I could take when talking to millennials and youth about trials they face. There is a LOT to be said about our current political and social climate that goes directly against biblical values. I was excited to read this book because I admire Lisa and know she tackles these items head on. I wanted to be able to tell a teen "_______" when they ask me about suicide, sex before marriage, gender transitions, homosexuality, pornography.

Unfortunately, this book reads like a diary. She meanders. Her mind wanders. Its like reading just an open thought dialougue. I could NOT read this in one sitting. As you can see, it almost took me all year to read. I'd read a chapter, put it down. Try to read another day...get kind of lost and try again...then start again. It didn't pull me in or create closer for me on any of the topic covered.

It had the right idea, just not the follow through I was hoping for.

Love gives even when it is not returned.

Loving everything is disingenuous. We do not and cannot love everything.

Protect love. Avoid, speak against things that are damaging to humans (1) and humanity (all).

Separation from family.
Unsafe living situations.
Injustice.
Pride.

What I refuse to abhor now, will become normal in the lives of the next generations.

Risk offending people rather than lie. Teach people what you will an will not allow.

Are you seeking being "Popular" or "Influential"?

Everything we take in affects us. Are we taking in healthy visions and thoughts or perverse visions and thoughts?

Killing, Murder, Pornography, Ab(normal) use, Misuse, Greed, Turning a blind eye, Causing someone else to stumble, Gloating......

What hardship are you enduring? In what way are you trusting God in your long-suffering season?

Are you adamant about staying mad, sad, and shackled?

or, are you adamant about growing and remaining close to God in Christ?

This book was so good! It was packed full of so much truth! I learned so much from reading this book.
"When truth becomes fluid, we lose contact with answers larger than ourselves. Real truth is a rock. Adamant. Indivisible. Immovable. Invincible. Jesus is truth. And I propose that Jesus is the Adamant."
Jesus is our cornerstone and is Adamant in truth. He loves us and wants us to be Adamant too.
I loved how Lisa showed in each chapter how God is Adamant, He is adamant in love, adamant that we love, adamant in hate, adamant in word, adamant in transformation and adamant in Holiness. God is Adamant.
All the Scriptures that show how God is Adamant were so refreshing and are making me seek and search deeper.
I loved the poem she shared in the last chapter...I will just share a couple lines that I really loved in it. "My heart is imprinted by you. Honor Me with your beautiful smile and strong heart. My adamant."
I highly recommend everyone to read this book, it was so well wrote. Thank you Lisa for following God's stirring to write this book, it certainly blessed and encouraged me.
