How Women Can Live with Boldness and Confidence Every Day
Every woman knows it's easy to lose sight of the heavenly power of God at work in our lives during times of hardship, exhaustion, stress, and change. But no matter the situation--whether it's our health, marriage, finances, family, or vocation--God has equipped all women with the power and influence to live freely and confidently.
With warmth and a welcoming style, speaker and award-winning writer LaTan Roland Murphy illuminates eleven courageous women in the Bible and shows how each was uniquely positioned for success because of her courageous choices. From Deborah to Jael to Mary, Murphy shows that these women chose to draw near to God; as a result, they were equipped with power for the supernatural ability to live courageous lives despite often undesirable circumstances. These stories will inspire women of all ages to trust God, minister to others, and live confidently and courageously no matter the season of life or what lies ahead.

Courageous Women Of The Bible Is a book that is about teaching you lessons on how to be a courageous woman and uses courageous women in The Bible as examples to backup what they are saying. Also in the book they have "courageous questions" for you to get thinking inwardly - is is introspectively authentic. It is an awesome book to read and one you should add to your library. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expessed in this review are all my own.

Have you ever been scared? I have. Plenty of times. Sometimes it helps to stop and think of other women in challenging situations who dug deep, found their courage, and powered through. And guess what? There’s a book for that!
Courageous Women of the Bible, by LaTan Roland Murphy, is a book designed to encourage and strengthen women. It tells the stories of Biblical women – some familiar, some maybe not so much – and how they found their courage in God.
In the introduction, the author refers to herself as “a self-proclaimed chicken”. She states that, as she realized her own need for courage, she wrote this book to encourage other women. And encourage she does!
Deborah, one of Israel’s judges. Jochebed, mother of Moses. The Samaritan woman, moving from one relationship to the next. Mary, mother of Jesus. Throughout Scripture, women play vital roles in God’s furtherance of His Kingdom, and the tasks God calls these women to often take them out of their comfort zones. How did they do it? Read and see.
Each chapter invites the reader into the life of one of these women of valor. We see where they had to make difficult choices, and how they persevered to do so. I liked the questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. You can read the book straight through, without digging into the questions, or you can read it one chapter at a time and take some time to really reflect on each woman’s situation and how it can inspire you to live differently, live more courageously. This is a wonderful book, and I’ll be referring back to it again and again for inspiration.
I received an advance copy of Courageous Women of the Bible from the publisher.
Courageous Women of the Bible begins by giving readers a list in the introduction of the women the book is going to explore including Mary, Deborah, Bathsheba and some other less known women from the Bible. This book is written for women, about the women in the Bible. I found it to be interesting, especially the chapters that included information and stories about lesser known women from the Bible such as Jael and "The Widow With Two Coins."
This tackles many different topics effecting women but focuses mostly on how women can leave fear and insecurity behind them and gain a life filled with confidence. The book talks about how all women have problems and struggles, no matter who you are or where you are in life, yet God still has a purpose for all of us. This is the first I have read by the author, but I really enjoyed it. She adds in scripture throughout the book that goes along with the topic at hand, along with things like "Courage Quest" questions at the end of the chapter, to further engage the reader, which I found to be helpful. Overall, I found it be a really interesting book filled with stories about some very interesting women from the Bible and how their stories can help women today to be more courageous.
Thank you to the publisher, Bethany House, for sending me a review copy of this book.
This is a book specifically geared toward women and written about women of the Bible, both well-known and unknown. I've never heard off LaTan as an author, but I definitely enjoyed this book. Any book about women of the Bible tends to intrigue me because I love learning how faithful the women were to God back then and were used by Him.
The focus of this book is about leaving behind fear and insecurity for a life of confidence and freedom. This books shows that all women struggle no matter how we see ourselves or how much God uses another. We all have our fears, flaws and downfalls, but God can use us for His work and purpose. We are all different, but we are all His daughters. LaTan uses scriptures to back up her points, she gives detailed insight on the women of the Bible. I love it!
This book could be read individually or as a group. There are questions at the end of each chapter to help you further understand and retain what was read. She also includes a separate chapter in which she has space for you to journal about a specific question (or pertaining to the chapter).
The foundation of this book is all about courage and I love it. As a woman of God I need to be courageous, even when I'm afraid. I need to grab hold of Jesus, focus on God, sink in the Word and live fearlessly. Loved this book and definitely recommend it!
Especially loved the chapters on Jael and Abigail! Love her intentional points of reflection/journaling. Sometimes her personal stories shared were a stretch from relating to the biblical stories yet nonetheless, relevant and helped shift the readers perspective and zoom out. Love seeing these women through the lens of courage!

Thought-provoking study questions and an interactive journaling section will help take you even deeper in your quest for a more courageous, confident life, either on your own or with a group.
My Thoughts: What are you afraid of? Is it stepping out and doing what God has called you to do? Is it facing an illness, a death? Or maybe some other type of hardship or even a new venture in life. LaTan Roland Murphy has written an excellent book, using women of the Bible to help illustrate how we can overcome our fear and insecurities. In this study the reader will take a look into the lives of Deborah, The woman with the issue of blood, The widow with two coins, Jael, Abigail Bathsheba, just to name a couple.
This is a working book, the author takes you on a journey into each of these women's lives and has you search and see how they found the courage they needed to live their lives and accomplish what God intended for them to do.
I love the way she has written this book, You read a chapter, then the author has you read scripture and apply what you learned by answering questions at the end of each chapter. She has a style of writing that is easy to read and understand. You can follow along and immerse yourself in the book.
This can be a study you do alone, or in a group setting. I recommend this book for all Christian women to read, young or old, it will certainly draw you closer to God, and give you the courage to carry on.

Courageous Women of the Bible Leaving Behind Fear and Insecurity for a Life of Confidence and Freedom by LaTan Roland Murphy Bethany House
Bethany House Publishers Christian Pub Date 20 Feb 2018
I am reviewing a copy of Courageous Women of the Bible through Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley:
In Courageous Women of the Bible we are reminded that Courage allows us opportunities we would normally shrink back from and avoid. It is pointed out too that courage allows us to plant our feet towards the path towards obedient living. It is pointed out too that even though we cannot do everything perfectly we can strive to do everything courageously. It is reminded too that Godly Courage is mobilized by an obedient spirit. We become courageous when we realize we are living for a higher cause.
We are reminded too that a willing spilling is what courage demands, it doesn't demand anything more or less.
Deborah was a woman of real courage, who like you and me faced real life struggles. And she faced real enemies, but she courageously chose to leave behind her fears and follow the path God had for her.
We are reminded too that courage is sometimes messy. The women with the issue of blood had courage when she touched Jesus garment and believed she was healed. We are reminded too that humility requires courage.
We are reminded too that Generosity can require courage too. We are reminded too Giving What You Have, As You Ate Takes courage as well.
Abigail had courage as well. It took her courage to meet David. She had the courage to walk by faith.
Bathsheba was another woman of courage, her situation meant that she had to have the courage to fight the temptation she faced.
Mary Mother Of Jesus had courage as she learned she was pregnant with the Son of God, as she raised that precious child, our Savior.
Mary Magdalene had the courage to follow Jesus, even as enemies and threats became very real. She believed when many did not. I give Courageous Women of the Bible five out of five stars!
Award-winning author and speaker Latan Roland Murphy's book "Courageous Women of the Bible" " empowers women through stories of choices that positioned them for success. She encourages her readers to look beyond their circumstances by laying out ways to develop more courage through scripture. She has her readers look at eleven biblical stories such as Deborah, Widow with Two Coins, Joel, Abigail, Bathsheba, Samantain Women, Mary, Mother of Jesus, Shulammite Women described, Shunammite Women. As someone who isn't very familiar with the Bible, I had a hard time connecting the women from the Bible and relating it to myself without having to do more studying. However, I did find some very inspiring messages such as: "Obstacles are simply opportunities with God by our side." "Own your tomorrow by making your way to Jesus today" -p. 48 There are many great messages in her book. However, I really wish she explained in detail more on the eleven stories as well as giving examples of to imply those stories to your life.
A lot of material in this book had a tendency to be repetitive. At the end of each chapter, there are discussion questions. This book would a good read for a Women's Bible Study. The back of the book has a lined journal which really loved.
LaTan Roland Murphy
I couldn't help but laugh when she explained "filling up with God will help you not waste your time on loser guys." I find it is interesting women especially Christian women only look at life around men. Couldn't women find other things to waste time on such as going out to drink or wasting time on a job that isn't going anywhere?
The main message I received from Murphy's book is:
"Our goal is to become courageous who leave behind fear and intimidation for a life of confidence and freedom." p.39
As someone who struggles with fear, this book was such a help to me! I love how the author uses the women of the Bible to encourage us to have godly courage in our life.
Some of the women she illustrated had courage was Deborah; Mary, Mother of Jesus; Abigail; and my favorite, The Woman with an Issue of Blood. Each chapter is devoted to one of these Biblical women and the trials they faced and the courage they had to go forward and do what God called them to do.
One of my favorite quotes in this book is, "When people grow weary of hearing our afflictions, Jesus doesn't." This was so comforting to my heart. I know that I can go before the Lord and tell him my fears and concerns and He is repulsed or turns away because He is tired of hearing it. He cares and listens.
I really enjoyed the thoughtful questions at the end of each chapter. It really made me think about fear can control my life and gave me ideas of how I can make changes. There is also a really favorite part in the back of this book - journal pages for us to write out what is on our heart after reading each chapter. I loved this as it helps me to get things worked out when I write them down.
My very favorite thing about this book is that is talks about courage from God. I don't have the personal courage sometimes to do what I need to do, but God is more than willing to give me the courage to go forward in life. He will do the same for you!
I highly recommend this book to women who struggle with fear or a lack of courage. It will definitely show you how God has the courage you need to go forward. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Sometimes I read a nonfiction book, and it feels like I’m reading a foreign language! This was not the case with “Courageous Women of the Bible” by LaTan Roland Murphy. I know LaTan personally, and this book reads like she is sitting right beside me, talking to me. I don’t know how she does it, but she can be deep without being confusing. That takes talent!
I grew up in the church, but I have a confession. Sometimes I would read the Bible and not really get anything out of it. LaTan opened up the word to me in a new, refreshing way. There were so many women of the Bible that she talked about and so many life lessons to learn. I appreciate the way LaTan showed how many women of the Bible had courage. I am now yearning for that courage, and I pray God will give me the courage and confidence to do what He wants me to do.
This book could be read individually or as a group. There are questions at the end of each chapter so a group study would be perfect. Also, at the end of the book are pages to journal after every chapter. I believe LaTan covered all the bases to really dig deep into God’s word!
I definitely recommend this book to every woman out there. There is so much in these pages to be learned. Pink highlighter is throughout my whole book! You will feel like you personally know LaTan after reading this book, and most importantly, you will gain a deeper understanding of the women God used in the Bible.
I received this book from Bethany House Publishers for my honest opinion.
I originally picked up “Courageous Women of the Bible” by LaTan Roland Murphy mostly because I thought the cover was beautiful and I wanted to know which women from the Bible she would focus on. The author focuses on eleven women, some well-known while some stories aren’t familiar at all.
I think we all struggle with finding courage, even the author herself. The author is vulnerable and transparent as she shares personal stories from her life as if she were speaking to a close friend. She writes in a way that encourages and challenges the reader to fully put their trust in God like many of these women in the Bible did, especially in unknown circumstances, and be courageous. She writes in more of an inspirational sense so I don’t recommend it for a Bible study, but she does have sound theology and includes Scriptural references to explain.
At the back of the book, the authors also include a journaling area with questions pertaining to each chapter to journal about their life. This is personal so it’s strictly just for you, but it can also be used with a mentor or a trusted small group.
I enjoyed this and would be interested in reading more from this author in the future. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to grow in their walks with the Lord.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
LaTan Roland Murphy invites readers to join her at the kitchen table. Courageous Women of the Bible brings the heroes of scripture to life, settling them into emotional seats alongside ours. She highlights their life-lessons as beacons to the courageous potential we each hold within. The vivid figures seem near enough to grasp hands with us across our dinette set.She offers us a spiritual pep talk you don’t want to miss. With personal transparency, Murphy embraces modern and biblical women into her huddle of faith.
LaTan connects us with the timeless issues faced by biblical heroines, close friends, and herself. Her writing touches hearts with inspiration as well as practical faith-solutions to our struggles with insecurity.
Queries and storytelling style draw us through the content. We’re led through a journey of discovering real-life heroines in the Bible and in ourselves. Each chapter concludes with insightful questions, but Murphy offers us more depth than most authors. I also love the journal section she includes at the back of the book to mark this adventure in courageous growth.
This compelling book both encourages women and challenges them to grow stronger in faith. Readers feel nestled in a warm nook of friendship with the author and her favorite biblical heroines. Yet, the call to stand in courage and fulfill one’s purpose buoys the soul. LaTan helps her audience rise to a brave stance from which they can live fully for God.
I highly recommend Courageous Women of the Bible: Leaving Behind Fear and Insecurity for a Life of Confidence and Freedom.
Courage. Brave. Bold. Powerful words we aspire to be. Yet how? How can we be courageous, brave, and bold in our lives? We face too much. We have challenges far too difficult. We have pasts looming over us. We see our humanly limitations. So how can we live this courageous life?
In her new book, Courageous Women of the Bible, Laton Roland Murphy says, "Courageous behavior comes as we realize we are living for a higher cause, greater good, and better story that is being written across our beautifully imperfect lives." In Courageous Women of the Bible, Laton digs deep into the story of eleven women in the Bible, after all, what better way to learn than from God's Word. She exposes their trials and how they became courageous women despite their circumstances. We visit Deborah, the woman with the issue of blood, the widow with two coins, Jael, Abigail, Bathsheba, the Samaritan woman, Mary, the Shulammite woman, Jachabed, and the Shunammite woman, as well as hear personal stories from Laton herself.
Each chapter ends with a courage quest, a challenge to step out boldly and take actions toward being courageous. The end of the book offers journaling prompts to really dig deep within ourselves with what we've learned. If you are struggling with courage, tired of shrinking back, tired of living safely in the lines, Courageous Women of the Bible is going to help you learn to live courageously just as God intends.
This is a book specifically geared toward women and written about women of the Bible, both well-known and unknown. I've never heard off LaTan as an author, but I definitely enjoyed this book. LaTan adds personal commentary and friendly conversation to each of these women's stories in order to show you how to apply each form of courage to your personal journey. She's also included insightful application questions following each chapter, as well as journaling pages at the end of the book.
If you are facing challenges dealing with leadership, rejection, finances, faithfulness, sexual sin, redemption, uncertainty, parenting, or hospitality - then Courageous Women Of The Bible will help you to refocus and center yourself, trusting God to give you the strength and confidence you need to overcome your fears. I found LaTan's personal and friendly nature to help me take an honest look at my own life, while adjusting my perspective of some familiar (and some not-so-familiar) women. I think this book would be beneficial for any woman who desires to open up to God and trust Him to handle whatever life throws your way. 4/5 stars.
*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary print copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for the purpose of this honest review. All opinions are my own.*
I like the idea of this book. I like how the author highlights one woman in the Bible in each chapter, how she shares something personal in each chapter, how she includes lots of scripture, and how she offers encouragement at the end of each chapter. However, I struggled to get through this book. What I didn't like was how the author was imagining how the women she highlighted might have been thinking or feeling. I think there are some people (maybe a lot of people) who would enjoy this speculation and might be nodding along with the author, but that style just isn't for me.
I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had done it as part of a group and only read one chapter each week in preparation for a study as opposed to trying to read it on my own as part of my quiet times. The questions at the end of each chapter are pretty personal so they would need to be discussed in a tight knit group as I don't think they are suited for a group of women to discuss who don't know each other well. They are good questions to contemplate.
While this isn't a book I am raving about, it did make some great points and I think women could grow from reading it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for a review. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Do you lack courage? Confidence? This book is for you! When you think of courage and the Bible what do you think of? Probably mostly men. However, in Courageous Women of the Bible the author highlights eleven women who stood the test of endurance and persevered.
These were no ordinary women. They showed courage in every way after going through trials, tests, and tragedies. Here are a few to wet your appetite:
Deborah The woman who hemorrhaged The widow who gave her two coins Jael Bathsheba Mary, mother of Jesus And more!
The author brings us closer to these women in each chapter. I felt like it was a getting-to-know-you session. Very encouraging and easy to understand. I loved how easy it was to read this book. Each chapter flowed nicely.
This book could be read individually or as a group study. At the end of each chapter, the Courage Quest posed some thought-provoking questions.
Chapter 12 gives the reader a place to journal with questions from each chapter. Such a nice touch to the end of the book.
I give Courageous Women of the Bible four stars. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know these eleven women better and they will encourage you to leave behind your fears to be courageous!

Courageous Women of the Bible isn’t a biography of Biblical women. It’s a motivational book that uses strong Bible women as examples to illustrate how women of today can also find courage and strength.
This is a well thought out and well written book that helps equip us in our daily walk. I take a lot of inspiration from the women in the Bible—for they had only a fraction of the opportunities we have today, yet they were steadfast and didn’t let fear, insecurities, or hardships hold them back.
The study questions at the end of each chapter (Courage Quest sections) are very thought provoking and help put things in perspective. This book is a how-to, an inspirational cheerleader, and also serves as a devotional. It’s most certainly motivated and encouraged me.
This is a faith-filled and educational, and has a unique journaling chapter in the back of the book, corresponding with the topics of each of the previous chapters. My only wish is that the words were a little larger print.

This was such a beautiful read! Actually, read may be the wrong word. It felt more like a personal conversation with the author. Latan brings such an approachable and intimate feel to her writing. I felt like we were sitting down to a coffee together and she was right there with me, inspiring and encouraging me. I loved how relatable she makes these Biblical women and their stories to me and my life! I loved that these ancient words had a sense of renewed accessibility due to her wonderful storytelling and the way Latan makes all the women of the Bible feel relevant and like the real, actual people they were. Deborah, Abigail and Jael all come alive with Latan’s beautiful descriptions, keen insights and sensitive understanding of what’s it like to be a woman and all the trials and joys that brings.
Some of my favourite parts were the author’s anecdotes! She’s right there with us as we journey through these stories, our own lives, and our relationship with God.
Thank you, Latan, for your wonderful book! You are inspiring and equipping a whole league of woman with the knowledge, understanding, kindness and love to become the best we possibly can be.
FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON CORAGEOUS WOMEN In Courageous Women of the Bible La-Tan writes about women in the Bible who might not be the first ones we think about as being a woman of courage, such as the Shulamite woman of Song of Solomon, or the woman who gave a two-cents offering. As you read La-Tan’s words, you will relate to these unnoticed heroines and will be inspired to model their courage. My favorite chapter is about the Shunamite woman who serves Elisha, births a son (despite her former infertility), and then loses the child to an internal head injury. La-Tan writes, “Have you ever felt like God deceived you? Like you’ve been the victim of a very poor joke? You want to believe the promises of God but your unanswered prayers weigh heavy on your heart? … Friend, God still has His pen in hand and He is writing a good story across the pages of your life. He is in the process of answering your prayers and He’s not finished yet. And Elisha, the man of God, wasn’t finished either.” It is this candid dialogue between the author and the reader that makes La-Tan’s book a stand-out, a literary gem, and a must-read. I am looking forward to reading La-Tan’s next book!
In Courageous Women of the Bible Ms. Murphy shares the beautiful and inspiring stories of eleven courageous women in the Bible. Each chapter, or profile, takes us on a journey of that character’s faith and courage. The chapters are rich with scripture and illustrate not just how that particular biblical woman demonstrated courage, but how to apply her lesson of courage to your own life.
Ms. Murphy shares personal stories on her own courageous battles and weaves them with biblical truths. This book is a must-read for Christian women seeking to live courageously through their faith in Jesus Christ.
It is hard enough to be a woman in this day and age, but I can only imagine how difficult it would've been for the ladies of Jesus' time and earlier. This book helped me to visualize the time period and circumstances of the women of the bible, and how hard it was for them. The courage they showed took major guts! Everyone would like to think that they would do the same if they were in the same situation and circumstances, but if it came down to it- I probably would have a hard time doing what these ladies did! This book is a good reminder of how courageous we must be to follow after Jesus.
I received this book free in exchange for my honest opinion.
I loved reading this non-fiction book by LaTan Murphy. She has highlighted specific women of the Bible, like Jael, Deborah, Abigail, Bathsheba, and brought them to life. Their fear and insecurity put me at ease, and their courage in the Lord inspired me to press on through the trials of my own life. One of my favorite sentences was "What's in your hand?" Jael took action with the tools in her hand--a tent peg and hammer--and God used her every day skill to defeat a nation's enemy. To often we read inspirational books and try to be something we're not, when all God wants is for us to be who he made us to be. Thanks, LaTan.
Murphy’s recounting of courageous women in the Bible caused me to more fully comprehend their audacity to trust God. Each one stepped into the unknown with daring and boldness. Where does this kind of bravery originate? It comes from a heart of faith that God is our source; He can make us over comers in any situation. Murphy’s perception of these women stirred my own faith and caused me to believe I can also face life’s difficulties. I can go forward, knowing God is more than enough.
Although slightly repetitive in places, this book provides encouragement to women about the amazing women in the Bible and their contributions. It can be hard to feel seen as a woman in Christianity when so much of the culture tells women they are to be quiet and submissive. The women of the Bible used the gifts God gave them to make an impact, to make a scene, and to change the situations they were in for the better. We can too.
I loved this book because LaTan Roland Murphy shares wisdom and inspiration from Biblical women who not only started over, they were often grieving terrible losses and forced to leave their homes. It really does help me to be more courageous and faithful when I read about women who lived fully and deeply, despite the worst circumstances.
I loved how this book really put flesh on the women of the Bible and how the author really brought their stories to life and all that can be learned from them. I don’t agree with the authors complimentarian views which means I would not use this book as a study with other women but could be a helpful resource.
Great book for any young woman to read and familiarize with courageous women of the Bible. We are taught that women are subjugated, renegaded through time. I believe this book reveals the truth of how God always elevated women to important roles in every situation, how courageous we are and instrumental for God's Kingdom.
Latan gives us inspiration from women of the past who stood against adversity and fear to live in victory. Following their example we can overcome insecurity and anxiety, face the future with confidence and know God's Word is true for every generation.
