(Christian Historical Romance) He is the moon to her tide, the sun to her corn, and the beautiful chief she will never have. She is the scent of home, the glory of a dozen battles, and the woman he didn't see until she was seen by another.Senior Warrior Fierce Mink has loved Tall Bull as long as memory. He is beauty and power, but in the secret pockets of her spirit, he is vastly more. He is the brave to whom she swore her heart, the friend to whom she owes her life, and the chief to whom she will never be bound. Soon, he will be required to take a wife, but lamentably, Mink is severe, intimidating, hard-bitten by war--qualities a man appreciates in combat, not so under the bearskins. But perhaps it's best he's blind to her, for he clings viciously to the Beloved Path, and unbeknownst to him, she has joined her fire with Jesus.
Since his youth, Chief Tall Bull has treasured Mink. Even now, in their turbulent refugee world, she is comfort; she is home. Better yet, she shares his passion to preserve the Beloved Path and his fight to start anew in a land where they are no longer hunted. Then, a startling omen: before the blood moon, Tall Bull must make restitution for his transgressions, or the spirits will take payment. From her. A tragedy he would die to prevent.
Another portent looms--that of a horde of bluecoat soldiers pecking at their borders, threatening to drive the Red Stick Defiance into uninhabitable swamps. The Defiance will not go quietly, and as Tall Bull prepares for a brutal strike, he realizes the bluecoats aren't his only enemy, and Mink's life isn't all he stands to lose. APRIL W GARDNER writes Christian historical romance with a focus on our Southeastern Native Tribes. She is also a military wife and mother of two who lives in South Texas. In no particular order, April dreams of owning a horse, learning a third language, and visiting all the national parks.
Once again, the author drew me into this book with the ease of a magician. Her lyrical treatment of each scene, rich in metaphors, is second to none and she seems to have a true understanding and respect for First Nations people and their traditions and culture. This is Mink and Tall Bull’s story – one that I was originally sceptical about reading. I had met them before in other books, and frankly, Tall Bull wasn’t easy to like back then. But somehow, by her masterful glimpses into his inner man, I was swung over to his side with true empathy. I’m at a loss for other words. When a book just won’t leave your mind long after the last page has been read – that’s when you know it’s genuinely excellent. Since this is book five in a series, I highly recommend reading the other books first. Even though I am a fan of the series, I did find some of the people and battles hard to keep straight. Fortunately, the author did include a cast of characters, a glossary, and other interesting supplemental material, which helped. That being said, I was so captivated by the ‘real’ story of these two heroic and honourable people, that the other details really didn’t matter to me in the end. The thought that came to mind was that this entire series needs to be made into a TV mini-series.
April Gardner writes an inspiring and moving continuation of her Creek Country Saga. Go back in time to the 1800s, a time when Fierce Mink, a woman warrior, lived to protect her chief, Tall Bull, her "heart". Enter a world ripe with faith, romance and plenty of historical details. You will fall in love with these characters, their customs and traditions. The author writes a well-researched and engaging story that had me on an emotional roller coaster. I could not put the book down and filled every free moment I had reading it. The story had many twists and turns and never played out how I thought it might, which I truly appreciated. I am thankful for April Gardner’s books because they help me learn more about American history while weaving important truths of faith in God throughout her stories. You will walk away from her books with more knowledge and understanding but even better are the pearls of wisdom you will gain. And the best part is this series is not finished. Each book in the saga can stand alone but it is better read in order. I was privileged to receive an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
One of the best Historical fiction on the ways, customs and superstitions of the American Indians that I have read. Gardner certainly has researched and brought her characters to life……This book is the story of Fierce Mink a Muscogee Senior Warrior and Chief Tall Bull. Mink has loved Tall Bull all her life, since a small child when she followed him everywhere he went. He has taught her how to become a great warrior. He thinks of her as a sister and is devoted to her. Thinking herself homely, she has resigned herself to being the protector for her “heart” and watching him wed another. There is so much detail of the Indian life, wars and enemies to hold you spellbound. How they obtained their food during the lean times. Also how they chose their mates. It also ends beautifully…… I highly recommend this book to all who loves reading about the ways and tribal customs of the American Indian. I was gifted this book and my review is in my own words, loved it.
Gardner’s rich and vibrant storytelling speaks to the mind, heart, and spirit. The historical time period, the divergence of cultures, and each individual’s story are intriguing, immersive, and compelling.
Mink is a deliciously multifaceted character… bold, fearless, fierce Red Stick warrior, fledgling Christ-follower, insecure, love-struck woman.
Tall Bull is an unintentional master of mixed messages. His actions are often in opposition to his heart’s desire and he seems to inadvertently and repeatedly sabotage himself with his pride and temper.
If you haven’t picked up this saga yet, I implore you to do so! Start soaking up the devotion, passion, and faith within these stories today! Be reminded of the diversity of cultural traditions within the Church and encouraged by our unity in Christ. Our God is Lord of All and there is no people group beyond His reach.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Bravo to Mrs. April Gardner for this beautiful Native-American Novel. Do not pick this one up for a quick read. It is very lengthy and deep. Mrs. Gardner carries the reader away with breathtaking and gripping prose. Many scenes throughout the story are intense as was the time period and setting. The historical accounts are rich, detailed and accurate as much as possible. The author explains in more accuracy how the history and fiction work together in the "Author's Notes" at the end of the book. The gospel is well presented throughout the chapters. The love story is achingly beautiful. The pain, loss and desire are penned so gracefully. I caught myself holding my breath more than once. The political unrest and battles/war were a little confusing for me, if not hard to follow but all in all I loved it! I HIGHLY recommend Love the War Women to historical fiction enthusiast especially those interested in Native-American culture.
April Gardner has written a book rich in history, and with deep knowledge of the Native American culture; their customs, traditions, and even speech patterns. The story flows in a poetic way, and the characters are both profound and intense. While you’ll instantly love some of the personalities, others will take a while to warm up to as they grow and have heart changes. Some you won’t like. Ever. And that’s okay. Gardner did a fabulous job of bringing all of them to life.
When I first started this book, I knew it would be good if it compared to the other books in the series. But it went so far above my expectations. I was reading as fast as I could simply because I needed to see how situations were resolved. Edge of the seat is the perfect way to describe Love the War Woman. And you will love her; the strength, honesty, and loyalty shown is incredible. And yes, this is book five in the series, but you could read it as a standalone with very little trouble.
If you enjoy Christian historical fiction and are interested in other cultures, you will love this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but was not required to leave a review.
I was thrilled to see Mink get her story and wow, this was a beautiful story. I couldn’t put the book down
Mink has always been a character with depth and many layers. She is a strong female, which I love but she has also had to become this way.
Her story like many in the series leaves a reader breathless. The author sweeps the reader in to history, culture and faith that spans beyond a book. These stories are made to make a reader feel a depth of emotions and come up from reading feeling as though they were stitched together with new friends.
I couldn’t begin to share how much another person will probably love this book. All I can say is you will be a new reader because of Mink’s beautiful story. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then go back and read the series. You won’t regret it.
With a richly atmospheric narrative and gorgeous word pictures, April Gardner takes us once again into Spanish Florida in 1817/18. The events closely parallel those of Bitter Eyes No More, but for a new perspective we follow Mink’s and Tall Bull’s stories instead.
Mink is fierce and fearless, but also insecure in many ways. Not only is she a Muscogee warrior, but she is also a new believer in Jesus. One who is still learning how to balance her vibrant tribal traditions with being a new creation. Yet, even in the transformation that Gardner exquisitely paints for her, Mink retains her culture and tribal identity. She does not, as so often fiction like this portrays, cease to be a Muscogee warrior when she also becomes a follower of Jesus. Instead, she finds new meaning and a covering of grace in her traditions, as well as seeing it all from eyes of faith.
Mink is also a woman long in love with her best friend – Tall Bull, a tribal micco who (as Beth Erin says) is an “unintentional master of mixed messages”. His own heart’s desires seem to catch him by surprise, and his intense pride often keeps him from those very desires. He is, like Mink, a complicated character but one well worth exploring each newly uncovered layer.
I also have to briefly mention Ten Cats, a seemingly minor character who grew in importance as the story progressed. He also grew on me and became one of my favorite characters in the whole book.
Mink and Tall Bull’s relationship is not a ‘typical’ love story. It’s a tumultuous path marked with detours and uncertainty, with other loving relationships, and with a conflict in faith. It’s often deliciously unpredictable but always exquisitely told with rich detail and lyrical prose. Gardner’s choice to include the tribal language (as well as a linked glossary) immerses you into a deeper reading experience that honors Mink and Tall Bull’s culture. And woven through it all is the overwhelming grace of Jesus, pursuing Mink and Ten Cats and Tall Bull – relating to them as their personal Savior, not as a white man’s God. Gardner does a beautiful job depicting the unity found in Jesus, as well as the cultural diversity He created.
When I first read an excerpt of this book which showed Tall Bull as the hero, I had my reservations. Tall Bull had been a pretty dislikable character, even in the last book, and redeeming villains can be tricky work for an author. However, April hurdled my expectations, bringing about a change of heart in Tall Bull that I found truly enjoyable.
For those who have read Bitter Eyes No More, Love the War Woman overlaps in time with that, this time telling the story of Tall Bull and Mink. Mink was a lovable character from the start, and the glimpses of her and Tall Bull in the past offered a much kinder view of him than in previous books. Though he still has moments of selfishness, and his scenes with Bitter Eyes show that he can be just as manipulative, his grief over his past actions is real and his quest for redemption his heartfelt.
I will admit that at somewhere after the halfway point, things started to get a little dicey for me. There were things that I had hoped to happen along with things that I expected to happen, in which the book took a very different turn. It was initially something that I was not at all happy about, but eventually realized was important for Tall Bull's final change of heart. Though I do not think that any of these characters will ever be able to top my love of Totka's character, both Tall Bull and Mink gave it a good shot.
I have provided an honest review of this book after having received an ecopy as part of the author's street team.
Drawn By The Frost Moon: Love The War Woman by April Gardner is a Christian historical Native American novel. It is an epic tale set at the beginning of the nineteenth century that will hold the reader's attention from the start. There are themes of love, friendship, brotherhood and loyalty. "I could never leave a brother behind." The Native Americans were fiercely protective of each other. They were a brave people who were not afraid to fight for what they believed was right. There were strong bonds formed in childhood that persist into adulthood. The truth of Jesus had been heard by some. "She'd denounced the spirits and confessed a belief in Creator Jesus." Jesus lodged deeply in hearts. The Native Americans believed at the risk of death. Their lives were on the line for their faith. Jesus gives us a peace that persists even when life is in turmoil. Jesus brings truth. "In my being... Truth speaks." We know that the words of Jesus bring life. Drawn By The Frost Moon: Love The War Woman combines elements of truth with fiction to produce an epic read. The reader is entertained by battles and friendships. Trickery and intrigue contrast with love and loyalty. I had a kindle copy. I can recommend a paperback as there is a list of who is in which tribe at the start, and it would be easier to flick backwards to remind oneself of the characters. I must admit, I got a bit confused at times. A very entertaining read. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
In my opinion Love the War Woman is April Gardner's best book yet. My attention was captured from the beginning of the book and I didn't want to stop reading it when I had other things to do that day. Mink, the War Woman, struggles with continuing in a warrior role or following the traditional role of women in the tribe. She struggles between her new found faith in Christ and the beliefs of her tribe. She wants more from her relationship with Tall Bull but doesn't want to give up her faith in Jesus. You will come to know these characters as you read the book and April's Creek Country Saga books as April has well developed characters and plots in each of her books. Some of the characters will seem to become friends or family as you read and you will want the best for them and feel the emotions they are experiencing. Will she find a relationship with Tall Bull? For the answer grab a copy of this book and find out for yourself. I highly recommend Love the War Woman and April's other books in her Creek Country Saga. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I'm not required to write a positive review, and the opinions I have expressed are my own. Happy reading!
"Long have I loved you..." torturing her with his tender, broken voice. "In some fashion or other, I've loved you since the morning I saw wolf tracks in the dirt and knew you had saved me." Romance laced with a cool sensuality dominates this epic novel. Drawn by the Frost Moon: Love the War Woman (Creek Country Saga Book 5) by April W Gardner intertwines Drawn by the Frost Moon: Bitter Eyes No More (Creek Country Saga Book 4) with an emphasis on Tall Bull and Mink's tumultuous love story.
In this saga, Gardner focuses with great detail the settings, events and native language used in the 1800's. I felt it was a little difficult to focus on the story while referencing the meanings of their cultural activities and their type of tribal interaction. I found it a bit lengthy but it was simply amazing as Gardner meticulously introduced the cast of characters, timelines and clans to help the reader get the right perspective on the power that women held in their village..."the women were the neck that turned the head. And what a strong neck it was." This story is truly a work of love by Gardner!
A great opening scene brings us back to the heart of the story. Strong emotion flows within the battles, friendships and the intense love that deepens as the story grows with the Spiritual Journey. It was fun to recognize a couple of characters that I read in Bitter Eyes, joining the two sagas into one main story. Although this novel is in a series, it can be read as a stand alone.
If you enjoy Historical Fiction Romance with intense detail, this is a must for your reading list.
Another great story by this author! We get a glimpse into a world of a woman warrior who is brave, loyal, fierce, and in love with her "heart". You will become drawn to the characters and the traditions, ceremonies, and discover how influential women were to their tribe! A story that will make you want to know more about the Creek nation and their struggles! Looking forward to the next book from April!
Love the war woman was book five in series of Dawn by the frost moon. This series just gets better and better, with each book that I read. I like that the series is loosely based on real events and characters. This book was Minks story and also had characters from the previous books appear. Lots of Indian history and traditions and I liked that there was a glossary, in the back, that explained the unusual words and phrases. These books will keep you reading way into the night, or early morning, as it is hard to just leave the story without finding out what happens next. Excited to start reading the next book in this series.
After reading the 4 previous books in The Creek Country Saga series I could not wait for the release of the 5th book....I was not disappointed! When April Gardner announced last summer that her upcoming book was about Tall Bull and Mink the War Woman I wondered then if I would find the characters as intriguing and endearing as our beloved Totka and Adela. Well, I must say my journey with Tall Bull and Mink proved to be ever bit as adventurous and exciting as any previous character journey I experienced. I was so engrossed with the struggles of heartbreaks and disappointments as well as the joy of love and forgiveness that I grieved and rejoiced along with Mink and Tall Bull. What a wonderful story....so full of heart and soul. Can't wait for April's next masterpiece!
WOW, WOW, WOW! April Gardner has done it again! From the very first sentence until the very last, I was captivated and held spellbound! Mink is a war woman in the Creek Nation. She has sworn protection, devotion, and love to Tall Bull and is viciously loyal to him. She has loved him with her whole heart forever, but Tall Bull does not share her belief in Jesus Christ and that's the one thing in which she will not yield. Will the horrors of war, starvation, and death of loved ones bring them closer together or push them further apart? Sometimes it takes losing all we hold dear, to make us realize how precious the things we have really are.
This story had me from the start! Can love be so blind? Yes. But when that awakening of desire and love finds you, will it be too late? No matter how much the heart desires it, love can't be forced, but when it survives the measure of time, it will never be denied. This is Love the War Woman.
I must say that April W. Gardner has done her research. When I first started reading this book, I must say that I found myself confused. So many words that I had no idea what they meant, made the story hard to understand. It wasn't until I put my finger on one of these words & it opened a glossary! Boy did that help. Please don't forget this so you won't be confused like I was. April has gone to a lot of work to make this book historically correct, by teaching the reader about these Native terms & about this time in history. My heart went out to the people in this story. Mink has loved Tall Bull since she was a child but he only sees her as a warrior woman, as his brother. Tall Bull is a man that carries so much guilt over the things he has done. Water Moccasin loves Birdie, an escaped slave that has such a horrendous background, she could never love a man. I especially loved Sunflower, the head clanswoman, she is highly respected by her people. She leads them with love, compassion & wisdom. This story not only carries romance, it shows the hatred that was toward our Native brothers & sisters at this time in history. The Americans wanted them off what they considered their land, the British refused to give them aid when it was needed the most. I loved reading about this time in history, especially how some of the Natives were taught by compassionate whites about the love of Jesus. I know this book is part of a series & I'm sure reading them all would give you more background of the people in this book & about this time in history. But I found it quite an exciting read as a stand alone. Even though this book is fiction, I'm sure there is also a lot of truth in it. I would very highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to read a love story that is so intense, a love beyond something most of us will every experience, embedded in a dreadful & beautiful time in our Native American history. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher & was under no obligation to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are totally my own. I am leaving this review also because I loved this book so much. I have learned so much & have become emotionally attached to the characters. I look forward to reading more in the series. Give it a try. you will not be disappointed!
`Love the War Woman` is the fifth novel in the Beneath the Blackberry Moon series by author April W. Gardner. I am reviewing an ARC (Advance Review Copy). This is a Christian fiction novel about Native Americans. There are two maps of Spanish Florida 1817-1818, helpful in reading and telling of the story. Also helpful are the live links to a glossary of words the reader may not be familiar with.
I learned there were such people as War Women. The average Muscogee woman was powerful, she owned all the property and she was never denied any dream. In the life of a child, the mother's blood was all that mattered. All the headmen and warriors lived by laws and decisions made by war women.
The author states, "Love the War Woman" can be read alone, but it intertwines closely with the timeline and plot of `Bitter Eyes No More` (book 4). It is highly recommended to read `Bitter Eyes No More` first, to avoid any spoilers.
Mink, the main character, recently came to salvation through Christ Jesus and she ached to be with her Creator. Her new life as a Christian was just beginning. What she did in the past is gone forever and all things are new.
A quote I liked is, `Prod a slumbering water cougar (a sacred mythological creature that has four legs, no feet, long hair, and a long fishlike tail), and he will certainly rise from the watery deep to engulf you.` A critical decision must be made between life and death.
This is a deep book by a good author, it can be confusing to read at times. I recommend this book to fans of Native Americans.
Disclaimer: "I was provided a free copy of this ARC ebook. All opinions are my own."
These are the types of stories that I long for in Christian fiction. This is not fluff Christian fiction and it is not predictable, nor does it play it safe. The opening scene had me all in my feelings and that is when I knew that this book, this story was going to be adventure that I did not want to end. This is the kind of story where you feel as if you know the characters; they are like old friends. You want to spend time with them, you long, no need to see how their story will end. You want to shield them from all pain and sorrow. And you enjoy their spiritual journey. It's beautiful. It is intricately woven within the story and does not feel out of place or like the author just threw it in there to be able to say this is Christian fiction. After you read a story like this, your expectations are high. April Gardner has taken her place among a group of authors that know it is okay to color outside of the lines of what people think Christian fiction is supposed to be.
It's so refreshing to see the amount of detail put into this book, not very common nowadays.
Mink and Tall Bull have had a trying journey but their story worked so well because of all the character development. Mink's character is truly inspiring, she was unapologetically herself at all times and wouldn't let anyone treat her as less. I'm glad she found someone who appreciates her strength and bravery instead of trying to hinder her at every step.
I didn't expect to love Ten Cats so much and I also really want a book on Water Moccasin and Birdie now. Excited to read the next book in this series though, whenever it comes out, which is hopefully soon.
Wow!!! If I could give this book more than five stars I would. I love when an author takes a villain and redeems him as Gardner does with Tall Bull. And I fell hard for the unique heroine who is Fierce Mink. This story had my heart racing and my eyes straining to read faster as I lived life along with all the Indian characters in this book. All the hints and info from the previous books in the series laid an excellent foundation for Tall Bull and Mink's unforgettable journey towards reconciliation.
This was a lovely read, rich in tradition, and true to culture and setting. I did not read the previous books. I'm sure this would have been a smoother read if I had. The story is still beautiful and haunting. I loved the tender side of Tall Bull, as he spoke of his feelings for Mink. I loved Mink's faith and her steadfast love for Tall Bull. Just a wonderful read! I'm voluntarily reviewing a free copy of this book.
I love everything April writes, but I was especially enthralled with this story of a Fierce Mink, a woman warrior, treated more as a "little brother" than as a marriageable woman by the man she loves. I cheered for her fledgling faith, her growing boldness. I mourned her losses and rejoiced in her victories. This book certainly offered a lot of highs and lows. A fantastic journey into Creek life. I highly recommend it!
Drawn by the Frost Moon: Love the War Woman will draw you in from the very beginning. With rich, vibrant storytelling, April Gardner takes you on a journey in this story through history that's filled with suspense, timeless love and faith. Highly recommended.
SO good. Well paced. I very much enjoyed Mink's personality and her portrayal. I felt a little sad about Ten Cats and how his role played out in the story. Overall great read and can't wait until the next one comes out.
Another one read of April's stories! I gain more love for her writings with each one. The story lines are so well described in every way and detail of each and every character leaves you knowing them and wanting so much more! I can't wait for the next.
