Dreams and Visions - A Prophetic Understanding of How God Speaks Today Through Dreams and Visions

Rate this book
And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams - Acts 2:17 As the Holy Spirit is poured out in great measure on today's Church, we should anticipate God speaking to us through dreams and visions. With illustrative stories from Scripture and from her own life, Jane Hamon has written this no-nonsense guide to the meaning, purpose and significance of dreams in our lives. She deals with how to interpret our dreams; how to know when a dream is from God; how to recognize false messages in dreams; what to do when your dream contains a warning; and more.

God speaks to us in our dreams but many times He is missed or misunderstood. In the book, the author provides insight that will bring remarkable clarity to every dreamer. As the Holy Spirit is poured out in great measure in this generation, we should all anticipate to hear God speak to us through dreams and visions. The question is, will we, the children of God, be ready to listen? In this book you will learn to know when a dream is from God, learn how to recognise false messages in dreams, learn how to act when a dream contains a warning and learn how to interpret dreams through the power of the Holy Spirit.

An elegant and accessible book that stresses the importance of dreams and visions in the Christian life. Culturally we're taught to dismiss dreams as the flotsam of the day's events or as our worries exaggerated to nightmarish levels. But they are a significant aspect of God's communication with us.

The author quotes Dr Gayle Delaney who studies dreams from a scientific perspective and says: "Dreams are very much like poetry. You understand them if you get the metaphor." So true!

The language of symbolism is found in dreams. This, like the indirect speech of Jesus and the symbolism He used, is part of eastern cultural expression.

I did find it quite puzzling that the book started out with an invitation to non-Christians to say the sinner's prayer at the end of the introduction. The second thing I found strange was the opening vision in Chapter 1 - which ended with a series of questions of what its purpose could be - but oddly Hamon never went back to discuss the matter further. The first couple of chapters were disappointing, with multiple bible narratives in quick succession being cited to in support of the author's substantives (reminiscent of the typical eisegetical charismatic book that I'd get rid of as quickly as I can).

Thankfully, the book got better! In the subsequent chapters, the bible narratives were retold at greater length (exegeted quite well in fact). I especially appreciate the segments on what were NOT dreams/visions in chapters 4 and 5 (Natural dreams and visions; False dreams and visions). Chapter 6 (Knowing the Source of your dreams) was my favourite chapter, especially the segment of "determining factors of spiritual dreams," (p65-66) which is also repeated in kind at the closing chapter. Basically, the content is about the few steps one can take to determine if a dream/vision is from the Lord or not. It is not that Hamon provided a scheme of things that made dream/vision interpretation super easy, but I appreciated how she approached them with a holy expectation and reverent posture toward understanding them.

The book almost fits into the category of a what a work of art a spirit-led Christian can write, without having to engage into proof-texting or making theologically shaky assertions. I honestly did not expect myself to like this book (because I found the front matter a little strange), but I thoroughly enjoyed the effort to be exegetically responsible and how so very practical the rest of the content was. As an avid reviewer, I can only keep books that I feel are really excellent - 6 stars out of 5 (otherwise I'd run out of space on my bookshelf); and this title is one of those I'd want to keep for the ages.

I received this book from the Baker Publishing Group's Chosen Blogger Review Program for the purposes of providing an unbiased review. All views are my own.

This is a really tricky-awesome subject. Everyone at some point in their lives have wonder if a dream they had, meant something. And if you are a Christian, you have probably wrestle with the idea or question: Can God talk to me? and if He does, how do I know its Him and not me?
To be able to hear God’s voice is something really important in the life of every Christ follower in the world. I do strongly believe that God does speak through dreams and many other ways, but in order to get there you need to have a closer relationship with Him. Otherwise you could be easily trick by the enemy or even yourself. You need to be in constant prayer and connection with God to be able to discern and understand His voice.
Now what this book does is use Bible verses and stories to try and explain the basics of how to understand God’s voice through visions and dreams. I honestly don’t agree with everything this book says. But this book is meant for mature Christ followers, and maybe that’s why it talks the way it does. Nonetheless I don’t agree with it and find it a little confusing. I don’t know. Maybe it wasn’t the right time for me to read it. I don’t know.

Have you ever wonder if your dreams is a way for God to speak to you? In Dreams & Visions by Jane Hamon visits examples in the Bible, provides interpretations to similar examples and gives readers insightful explanations to dreams and its meaning. Great principles and insight to what God's messages may be. I find Ms. Hamon's words easy to read, and she focuses on the importance of prayers to be able to interpret God's message for you through your dreams.

"Consider your dreams prayerfully. It is easy to miss the deeper meaning by settling for a shallow interpretation." (133)

In all, a great start for those who wants meaning and can't comprehend their dreams.

This was the first book on dreams that I've ever read. I really enjoyed it a lot and journaled throughout the entire reading. I did have a lot of unique dreams while I was reading this and believe that God may continue to speak this way to me in the future. As far as the content of the book is concerned, it is an introductory book so it may not appeal to anyone with a lot of knowledge & experience in this field. I think some people who are skeptical of dreams as a means of God speaking would benefit because there aren't any stories or examples that are that hard to accept; everything is pretty believable. I still have questions-especially about interpretation, but overall I love it. I should add that before I read this I was somewhat skeptical about dreams as a medium of communication but I'm a lot less now.

Definitely insightful and helpful in relation to understanding my dreams and what I can learn from them. The Lord has used dreams in my life and my story, so I was interested in finding out more about and how that can become a more frequent mode of communication with Him. This book helped achieve that. She has a very balanced approach and validates the way the Lord can speak to us through the dreams. She touches on the legitimate psychological aspects of dreams, but the focus is on the spiritual side and what God may be trying to communicate to us through the dreams. It has certainly encouraged me to track my dreams better and have more insight into what they might teach me. I would recommend this to anyone that is interested in pursuing the Lord in their dream lives, which is of more importance than we would initially realize.

Jane Hamon has written a powerful book about dreams and visions that belongs in the library of every Christian. She is masterful about breaking down dreams and visions, as well as providing Scriptural background and support. Mrs. Hamon carefully guides the reader through a complex subject in such a clear and uncomplicated way. I also appreciated that she shared dreams that she and others have had along with their interpretation. Doing that helps the reader get more accustomed to what it looks like to interpret a dream. It was enlightening to read this book and it will no doubt enrich my walk with the Lord.

In a society that either excludes the significance of dreams and visions or tries to give a dictionary of terms for the meaning of dreams, this book offers guidelines that allows the reader to determine the significance their own dreams based on their own experiences.

Anything by J. P. Jackson would be more accurate and helpful. Why the spouses of famous writers and teachers feel that they can be writers just because of their connection is beyond me.

This book deals with a very heavy topic that can be perceived as mystical but Jane does a great job giving practical tips on understanding dreams and demystifying hearing from God.

Shallow

The information is well grounded to the word of God for sure but you need more than a book to interpret dreams - experience. Books only help a little.
