Paikka is just an ordinary northwestern city with lovely mountain views and the occasional appearance of a dragon flying over Main Street. Five years after the destruction of Blackwood Tower, it's not the tourist hotspot it once was and times aren't easy for the locals. But at least they have the Storm Riders. . .
By day, Caiden Blade and his friends enjoy a simple life in the mountains beyond the city, complete with farm fresh dragon milk and pancakes cooked over a fire breathing dragon. By night, they are the Storm Riders - masked guardians of the City of Dragons who sweep into town without warning, leave a trail of justice and good deeds in their wake, then vanish without a trace.
Keely Chance is the biggest Storm Rider fan in Paikka. She hangs posters of them, collects newspaper clippings about them, and gets angry whenever a word is spoken against them. She spends most of her time working in her family's cozy bookshop and, with the exception of a reoccurring nightmare that keeps haunting her sleep, her life is finally peaceful.
But then mysterious messages begin appearing all across town, making both Keely and her dragon-riding heroes wonder if a real-life nightmare has returned. . .
Was I particularly slap-happy tonight, or was this actually the funniest book I've read in a long time? (I'm leaning toward the latter, but I guess we'll see...) And if so, that's really saying something, because I've read some hilarious books by some very funny authors recently.
Not that this one was all humor and no action--I went from laughing to gasping and back multiple times, especially near the end. I had no idea how things were going to turn out, and I was seriously worried for quite a while. And then in the middle of it, I'd get lines like--"It'll help with the bruising." "I don't think I need any help with that. It seems to be bruising just fine."--and I'd be off again.
Honestly, I don't think it was the number of lines that made me laugh that stands out as much as how long and hard they made me laugh. I can't pinpoint how or why, but some of them had me in stitches for several pages (and no, that's actually not an exaggeration). I'm pretty sure my neighbors must think I'm nuts...
I enjoyed seeing Keely again and appreciated her part of the storyline as she tried to deal with the darkness in her past. Even with her struggles, her scenes weren't depressing or dark, and I loved the way that she and her family chose to focus on the positive aspects of their lives. Love their relationship with Ember and Tyson, too, especially Mom's insistence on feeding and supplying them like they're homeless. (Maybe they need to take the hint and get some better clothes.) :)
The modern-day dragon setting continues to provide delightfully unique concepts (a dragon-powered battery for charging cell phones, anyone?), and I love the team's quirky, outlandish, idyllic life in Eye of the Storm. And, of course, the Storm Riders themselves were as great as ever. I honestly can't think of anything I don't like about these four. Individually, they're great; together, they're perfect! The chemistry, the banter, the protectiveness--it just doesn't get any better.
If I keep going much longer, I'll spoil all the good parts, so I'll end this review and go pester my friends and family with my happy squeals... But I'll leave you with my favorite line, which I love for itself and for Willow's perfect nickname:
