The battle against one enemy from abroad has just ended while another on the ravaged streets of L.A. has just begun for Will Reisner and his team. A deadly game of pursuit is underway as Reisner and his fellow operators evade the Paras hunting them as they make their way through the burned-out shell of the city while awaiting a rescue that may never come. Volume 3 in the pulse-pounding Emergence Series picks up immediately after the events of the second book and will have you clutching the edge of your seat.
Cannot say enough great things about this continuing saga... What is exceptionally enjoyable is the infected. They are so profoundly different than anything else out there today in the broad apocalypse “zombie” genre. Their on-going evolution keeps their place within the story front and center as well. Many times, a few books in, after so many battles and zombie encounters there’s not much more that can be done by authors, it seems. And though a series may still technically be a “zombie” apocalypse series, the infected begin to take a backseat to the human story. The further you stretch out in the storyline (books 7++) you might even find a whole book where the characters pass a horde in their cars, or the “the odor of the zombies that forever surround their gates constantly permeates the air” - simple mentions such as these, but no real substance. The author used up all his or her imagination in this area in the first few books it often seems like. “Emergence,” on the other hand - the creativity and eye for the big picture is superb! As I said above, the continued growth of the “paras” leaves room for a never ending story, if the author would so wish. (hint*hint ;) Additionally, I’ve applauded the author’s skill in character development in previous reviews, and it’s worth another mention. Specifically due to the fact that the characters also include the infected. Which is novel as well as memorable. I may only be considering this here in Volume 3 because the infected are now truly advancing from semi-unconscious beings to fully sentient. I’ve seen other books attempt this - but it’s been too forced. And very different than the way it’s being effectuated here. Others I’ve picked up then put down are more like a character just immediately slapping a zombie skin over an undamaged human brain. Then - “let’s go find a pizza shop to raid!” ?? Yeah. Not too fun to read. So .... Volume 3 of “Emergence” was fantastic! My only complaints are: 1. One of my favorite characters was taken out of the picture. Whhyyyyy????? Urgh. So bummed. Not sure I’ll be able to get over it. :( 2. Way to short. I don’t get that? A pensive yay!: 1. Seems my main worry and total aggravation from Volume 2 has just seemed to ..... evaporate?? Maybe? Not a mention of the situation on any of these latest pages. ———- POSSIBLE SPOILER ———- The situation is regarding our hero, and his boss’s, integrity. And a certain ship captain’s email. ? So, it’s extremely odd that it wasn’t mentioned at all. But I’m thrilled it has probably been squashed. Swept under the rug? Especially now that the president, general, etc, etc, everyone they are working for and with know them so well now. They *should be* safe. ? Oh, if only that captain got blown up by the sub! Lol ———- END POSSIBLE SPOILER ———— On to Volume 4 ...... can’t wait!!
I love reading the work of this author, and with book 3 of Emergence, it's clear to me that JT Sawyer has done it again! One of my favorite aspects of books 1 & 2 was that it wasn't just another zombie book, and even better was the allusions to the creatures and how their bodies function. Book 3 delved even deeper into the ways in which the bodies and parasites are dependent upon meeting their physiological needs. Without giving away any details, what I found even more interesting are the impacts of odd infections and the damages to the alphas based on the circumstances surrounding their death and reanimation and the same (the physiological needs).
Had high hopes for this story from Sawyer. Liked his past work. This book was mediocre at best.
I am a long time reader of Sawyer's work and I was looking forward to this book. I was disappointed in the how the story was organized and how the characters were introduced. Everything was choppy and the chapters lacked adequate transitions. I could not tell what was going on at some points. The author is encouraged to go back and look at his previous work to see if he could recapture the form that made me a reader of his books.
Good series. Kind of predictable as far as plot goes . Small twists and turns make this a good winter read. For the days when the streets are covered in snow. Waiting for the first opportunity to shovel yourself out of the house. This series holds some suspenseful moments to entertain until the weather turns nice. Looking forward to book 4. Hopefully it will end there. The story is kinda worn out but in a good way.
Loved This third book! The alphas are getting smarter, so the battle will be win on the ability to out think the other. Reisner and Selene have a huge battle ahead. This book explained the virus, had tons of Action and scientific discoveries. Great series, start at book one, trust me it is worth ut!
This is a series I will read again! This book is even more frightening than the first two! I highly recommend this book/series, it's up in the Top 10 best books I've read in a while. A must read, I promise you'll like it, why not have a go?
Great trilogy so far if your a dystopian novel fan and enjoy a badass protagonist then definitely worth a read. An all round enjoyable experience and am already impatiently waiting for the next instalment!
