This is a valuable resource for anyone writing their own life story. There are easy exercises at the end of each chapter which will encourage writers to try something different with their writing. The life stories included at the end were not as useful as the body of the book.
This book is probably not for everyone but if your into writing, it’s a good one. I’ve been thinking of writing some memoir just for myself and maybe my kids someday. This book has got me really fired up now. Life stories however you want to do them with lots of great advice on how to get started, organized and enjoy it. Along the way, stories that others have written. As I move forward I will reference back to this book often. Also many suggestions on books to read and if your really into it, publishing information. I’m not sure I’ll need that but nice to know where to find it.
This book is full of easy to understand information and exercises to do to make you think and bring personal memories back to the present. I found it useful, also, to help me describe real characters in my memoir and describe places and actions. I would very much recommend this book to get you going on the way to writing your life, but one must realise that to publish a memoir for people to buy is quite another thing and requires tough editing. Mine took 3 years to write but this book did get me on my way in the early stages.
I read this book to prep for my Memoirs class that I teach and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to write memoirs or biographies. Even authors who write in other genres will benefit from reading this book. My copy now has lots of notes written in the margins and tagged pages.
