When they make it into the light, they discover Grimgar—a fantasy world that’s like something out of an RPG game. Only by cooperating, using their wits, and learning new skills can they hope to survive in this dangerous land of monsters and magic.

Well, just when you think Jyumonji only knows how to kill characters off, he finds a way to do something even worse. It's a relief to realize that he recognizes Ranta's toxicity, though on the flip side I'm not a fan of what Merry goes through here, which is the main thing keeping this from being a four-star book.

If not for Merry's ordeal, this would be the best volume since #3, and for much the same reason -- for once Haruhiro's band actually has a goal beyond making do. We also get POVs from characters beyond Haru and Ranta, which is always a nice change, and the story offers some insight into the bad guy culture, which is more nuanced than previously hinted at.

Onwards to volume 9.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is a series that gets better with each volume; there's new characters, new settings, and new plot twists. Volume 8 of Grimgar is a novel that definitely delivers when it comes to the above.

Saying that, this volume was not as good as the seventh one. Volume 7 blew me away, and this book slightly paled in comparison. What made me enjoy this book less than its prequel was the introduction of the new characters-- I just didn't care about them that much. I don't even know if they're going to come back in Volume 9 and forward. If they do, I may change my mind about how I feel about them.

I enjoyed the ending of this novel, and I felt that it was worth reading the rest of this book because of it. Grimgar excels at climax scenes in a lot of its volumes, including this one. Overall, this book was pretty good-- not the best in the series, but I still enjoyed it.

No progress.

Volume 8 of this series, and everything remains the same. The main character spend half of the book talking about how insecure he is. Once again Yume is here but at the same time there is nothing about her to create a bond. Some plots are pointless, without connection or reason. The story has a lot of potential but is poorly executed.

Is this series still worth your time at volume 8? Yes it is.

There are chapters from Ranta's point of view, and some of the other characters besides Haru. This is so important, especially Ranta, because Haru is so single-minded, so introverted and wrapped up in his own head and insecurities that we need an outside perspective. The party is split up for most of this novel, which also adds to the tension and makes them vulnerable all over again.

The best part has to be the insight into the goblins and orcs, the "enemies" that they have been fighting all this time are not so very different, and yet Haru and his friends must fight and kill in order to survive.

The character descriptions in the beginning of the story are not as actuate anymore.
Not everyone changes in this story, but slowly from volume to volume someone is motivated and begins to change.

A pretty sweeping volume, well, for the most part. I think it moves a bit too fast in terms of character introductions, as we get bombarded with a new cast of adventurers along with our first real "human" enemies.

One of the big parts to this novel is that it serves to split the group. This leads to some interesting stuff, like furthering / complicating relationship triangles, and new battle tactics. Battles were ok in this volume. There's a lot of fighting, and maybe that's what doesn't make them all hit home for me, but I'm not a huge Shounen action fan to begin with. The moves that our heroes can make are, overall, pretty well established, and they haven't gotten anything new yet. The new cast we meet have some different techniques, but nothing earthshattering that comes through during any of the major battle scenes.

Typical of Grimgar, this one ends with more movement. You just wonder when or if our heroes will get back to town to relax.

Tanta tensión me va a matar

Unexpected yet again :D Grimgar manages to pull off these volumes where it breaks with the traditional fantasy. Can't go too deep into the story because I don't want to spoil. All I will share is, the team splits up into 3 pairs, and it gives us an opportunity for some characters like Shirohuro to share a bit of their inner thoughts. Smashed the volume really fast! Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, can't wait for volume 9!!!

Great character development

This is the first time on all volumes I feel such deep and rich character development. They each have a unique personality and/or story. It is also the first time I see Haruhiro really grow significantly. I hope it would be more though. It still feels the mc is developing too slowly.

Grimgar tập 8 tiếp tục lối kể chuyện sâu lắng, cảm xúc và đậm chất nội tâm. Nhóm Haruhiro dần trưởng thành hơn, nhưng mạch truyện hơi chậm, ít cao trào. Dù vậy, thế giới giả tưởng vẫn cuốn hút, nhân vật được khai thác tốt. Một số đoạn dài dòng nhưng tổng thể vẫn đáng đọc cho fan thể loại fantasy – slice of life. Nếu bạn yêu thích chiều sâu hơn hành động, đây là lựa chọn phù hợp.

Though it took a long time for me to read, I read it and liked it more than most of the other books aside from the third volume. There was a lot going on here, but it was good to see a change in party and change in pacing of the story and portrayal of the enemies everyone’s fighting.

The story and plot of this arc are great but the problem is the way the author makes Team Haruhiro fight, they go on many adventures but still look like amateurs in their skill decision-making. Also, Ao Jyumonji is making a cliche that makes me not rate it five.

Never seems to be any resolutions to the main storyline (not that there is much as far as side plotlines) but I am enjoying it nevertheless.

This is probably my favorite one since vol 4. It had a lot of similar character development moments that I really liked.

I'm loving the Forgan arc even though this is just the 1st book.

Ranta turns traitor and Merry becomes a prisoner. Haruhiro and Co teams up with Rocks and Setora to free Merry.

This volume is probably one my least favorites of the series that I’ve read so far. The main reason being what happens to Merry. I felt uncomfortable reading the part where they get taken. Also let’s talk about Ranta. I’ve always dislike Ranta’s character since the beginning of the series. He’s always has been a bit annoying, with some of his remarks to the other party members but I’ve always let it slide. However, this volume really perpetuated my feelings of dislike of him. I didn’t really like his thoughts when Merry got captured.

However, in this volume we see more diverse character interactions in the team when the party separated. I really liked this since we see more interactions that we haven’t seen yet. My favorite was with Shihoru and Kuzaku. I loved their discussion on Haruhiro.

Towards the end there was a lot of info dumping. The fight scenes also weren’t as great as the other volumes prior. The only fight scene I really liked was when Haruhiro used stealth in his fight. You could really tell that he’s starting to have a better understanding on his fighting style and is getting more comfortable with being not what an “average party leader” should be like (An example: one who just stands out like Rock or Renji).
