After her father’s untimely death, the only things Lily Harris is left with are debt, scandal, and loneliness—and her late father’s business partner, Jake Tolliver, looking over her shoulder. Lily isn’t interested in being another one of Jake’s many conquests, no matter how attractive he is. But after weeks of frustrations, she’ll consider accepting his help…until he reveals the promise he made her father.
Before Jake Tolliver’s friend and mentor died, he asked Jake to take care of his daughter…forever—not that Jake had to be asked. For years, he’s desired Lily Harris, and he has a well-deserved reputation for always getting what he wants.
By day, USA Today Bestselling author Jenna Bayley-Burke is faster than a speeding toddler, stronger than a stubborn husband, able to leap tall Lego structures in a single bound...but by night, while the family sleeps she writes romance novels where no one ever has to scoop up after the dog, change diapers, clip coupons, drive carpool, do laundry, mop floors, get silly putty out of hair, vacuum, empty the vacuum bag (gross!), exercise, count calories, apply bandaids, clean up puke...wait where was this going? Oh, Jenna writes romance because it is glamorous. Just ask the dog.
This is one of those stories where both main characters have been damaged by their past, making them reluctant to see and acknowledge what’s right in front of them. Lily is the highly protected, naive daughter who billionaire Jake Tolliver has been in love with for years. However, he’s never told her, had very little to say to her and feels unworthy because of his past. Whilst terminally ill, Lily’s father asked Jake to protect her by marrying her. Jake proves to be an extremely patient man - well, either that or just too reticent to open up and admit just why he wishes to marry her. As the debts and problems her father has left to be resolved, there are some difficult decisions to be made by both Lily and Jake!
One thing you can say about this author is that she writes characters which you end up wishing you could talk some sense into! This is a dramatic story of learning to open up and trust, realising the strengths and abilities of others and of yourself. I liked how Jake was determined to give Lily the time and opportunities she needed to mature and develop herself. However, also didn’t like how he didn’t help correct her misconceptions about his relationships with others and his tendency to jerk her around. Nor did I appreciate her inability to trust based on her personal experiences of his behaviour, she really should have been counting her blessings much of the time! I did love Jake’s Grandma - what a brilliant old lady, a real treasure! Get ready for angst, turmoil and drama in this contemporary romance!
I requested and received a copy of this novel. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.
This is a great romance in which to indulge yourself! Robyn Tindall has dreams of becoming an event organiser but, until a suitable opportunity arises, she will go where her agency sends her. The latest post is to work as the personal assistant for Curtis Frye. His reputation for firing assistants before they’ve even been there long enough to have lunch has definitely preceded him and Robyn is determined that won’t happen to her - and it doesn’t! In fact, she proves so efficient and indispensable that he suggests she pretends to be his fake fiancée to help him with his publicity problems. Needless to say, he thinks money is the answer to everything. However, Robyn isn’t after monetary gain, she’s looking for her happily ever after with a man who truly loves her. Curtis doesn’t believe in love and sets out to prove it but sometimes love has its own revenge!
This is a lovely fairy tale type romance, blending classic and contemporary into a delightful read. The author brings her imperfect characters to life in her own inimitable manner and making it easy for readers to empathise with them. This is an easy read and a great story to escape into.
Many thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC of this novel with no obligation. This is my honest review.
**This is a re-issue originally titled Her Cinderella Complex; it has been re-edited and some additional scenes added.
I’m not a huge fan of billionaire/millionaire stories but since I am a big fan of this author I decided to give The Billionaire’s Runaway Fiancé a try, but unfortunately it fell somewhat short for me. Sure the fairytale story was kind of cute, but I had a hard time connecting to either of the main characters and in face the heroine drove me crazy with her wishy-washy behavior and I never felt the intense heat between this couple.
When Robyn Tindall is assigned through her temporary agency to work for billionaire Curtis Frye, she knows the assignment will be difficult because the man himself has a reputation for running off assistants as fast as he changes his underwear, but Robyn is determined to do a good job and soon Curtis finds her irreplaceable. With the press is hounding him again, Curtis devises as scheme to get them to back off, but what he doesn’t realize is what he’s asking of Robyn may very well break her heart and her trust.
This book was a bit uneven in that scene changes were often very abrupt and left me going back to re-read because I honestly thought I’d accidentally somehow skipped pages on my Kindle. I found the dialog to be very stilted for a good part of the story and Robyn’s professions of love for a man she only knew through work to be a tad immature and childish. Curtis was almost over the top harsh and devoid of emotion and I never warmed up to him. For me their intimate scenes felt unnatural and wooden. I honestly needed to see Curtis go through the steps to change his behavior instead of being told, I needed to see him come unglued when he realized that he stood to lose the person who meant more to him than anyone if he didn’t change his ways. Robyn, was sweet and a bit naïve and I wanted to see her grow a backbone and not give in to him so easily; she’d build up a nice head of steam only to be easily swayed the next moment.
The premise of this story was cute, but overall it was a tad disappointing and not what I’ve grown to expect from this author.
The Billionaire's Runaway Fiancée was a good read. The writing was good, the storyline entertaining, and while Robyn and Curtis were likable and entertaining characters I failed to feel the connection/passion between them. Unfortunately this played a role in my overall enjoyment.
Thank you to Entangled Indulgence for the advance copy.
I liked the start of this novel but it deteriorated in the middle and despite my best efforts to finish the book I had to DNF at 64%. On re-reading the start of the book to see why I liked it I can see some of the signs I missed earlier. What modern woman says "gadzooks" and "jolly hockey sticks"? I mean really.
Robyn Tindall is temping as a PA until she can land a job as a corporate event planner. Curtis Frye is a CEO who is too busy to train his new PA and his old PA has left suddenly. His boorish behaviour and unreasonable behaviour have run several PAs off in tears but Robyn is made of sterner stuff. Fast forward a year later and Robyn has given up her girlish dreams of a career in event planning and is now totally content to act as a work housefrau to Curtis, encouraging him to play more golf, making his coffee, paying his bills, collecting his new clothes from the tailor, making sure he has no appointments on his birthday. Of course, Robyn wears ugly boxy suits and is a total plain Jane.
Curtis is being hounded by the gossip columns about his love life so he decides a fake relationship with Robyn would get everyone off his back and allow him to devote himself to work 24/7. The fake relationship develops into a fake engagement and soon Robyn is dragged into planning a wedding which will quietly be called off at some point in the future.
Robyn however is a complete doormat, she has fallen in love with a total jerk and acting as his personal slave for a year has only made things worse. She realises she can't continue to pretend to marry Curtis any longer because she is soooo in love with him. Cue Robyn saying she can't marry/ have sex with Curtis because he doesn't love her and Curtis saying he is incapable of love. Over and over again. This was where I bailed.
I didn't find either character sympathetic, sorry.
I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
The Billionaire’s Runaway Fiancée is such an interesting story. Curtis is ready to fire Robyn before she even begins working. Robyn isn’t about to go down without a fight. Robyn becomes indispensable to him and when publicity problem make his life hell the one person he can count in is her. Curtis proposes a media marriage in the hopes of getting the media off his back, the only problem is Robyn is in love with him. Curtis doesn’t do love and has no plans to change that fact for nobody, that includes Robyn. I really enjoyed this novel and the depths between the main characters. The Billionaire’s Runaway Fiancée has a great storyline that makes it a 4.5 star read for me.

I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review.
Classic lighthearted frothy romance - seriously hot, rich boss and seemingly plain PA who one day he starts to see in different light and who can assist him by playing as his fiancé to restrict media attention.
I like the easy way this author writes. An ideal holiday book if you want a bit of escapism.
***ARC RECEIVED FROM NETGALLEY*** We all know this plot has been used before so I'm not going to ponder much on that. What I loved most was the ending. Curtis was extremely caring almost to a point vulnerable with his fear of losing Robyn. It was sweet and touching and I'd say it was definitely a 4 star read!
Curtis is the guy the media can’t get enough of...handsome, rich, so driven he’s the top 10 of every category in the “Top 10” list. Too busy making business deals and staying at the top of the heap, he doesn’t spend time getting busy with the ladies, which is a good thing because he definitely doesn’t believe in love. Robyn is the invisible to him most of the time assistant whom he ends up respecting mainly because she keeps his life running seamlessly and has proven herself to always have his back. Unfortunately, however, she’s nowhere near capturing his heart, even when she tells him he already has hers.
Wearing cheap clothes, ultra thick glasses, and not that striking we’re told except for her green eyes, Robyn seems to be poised to become a modern day Cinderella. Problem was Curtis clearly didn’t come across as overly Prince Charming. This guy looks out for numero uno, folks,….himself. Sure, it’s revealed he has a past he misinterprets as determining his future. Hence, the baggage he ultimately has to work through. You see, this guy can’t see his proverbial forest for the trees.
You’ve likely heard the expression “Money can’t buy you love.” Well, this “never takes no for an answer”, stubborn/thick headed/legendary deal maker is about to learn the meaning of that very concept slowly but surely. He proposes a fake proposal of marriage, but he is clueless she has fallen for him, even when she is standing front and center of him in full wedding day glory regalia. I think that is when I loved this hero even less and my heart started to break even more for this “maybe he’ll love me someday” heroine. He was definitely living in denial, because even sub-characters pointed out to him it was obvious she had feelings for him.
I often felt more sympathy than angst in this one, folks, at least in the first half. Sympathy for the heroine, that is. By 50%, it switched to frustration with a touch of admiration because after Robyn sings like a canary and admits her feelings, which are not reciprocated, she turns somewhat strong and sassy in reminding him she’ll never settle for anything less than true love.
If you are patient enough to wait for a handsome but reluctant to feel/admit to love hero who takes forever to come to his senses, while watching the heroine want what she can’t have but eventually fights back with sassy words, you’ll likely really enjoy this book. As a true romantic at heart, I felt romance took a real beating until the very end.
Oh, I should mention I wasn’t overly fond of Robyn coming across as an ugly duckling in the very beginning. Somehow the fancy clothes changes everything, and Curtis can’t keep his hands to himself. I guess you could say that element makes the story line now a mixture of Pretty Woman and Cinderella.
Though the writing did flow and seemed to be well-written (except for the non-dramatic, not enough groveling/too convenient ending), you will ultimately be the one to decide if this “love sure didn’t come easy” theme appeals to you.
Title: The Billionaire’s Runaway Fiancee, Series: Invested in Love, Author: Jenna Bayley-Burke, Pages: 208, stand-alone, some very steamy scenes, reluctant to feel/admit love hero, open/honest heroine who doesn’t hide her feelings, no cheating, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, heroine gets her heart stomped on repeatedly.

A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a very different billionaire marriage of convenience storyline. We do have our billionaire (Curtis Frye) who is tall, dark and handsome and is CEO of Golden City, a Frye family property development conglomerate. He has struggled his entire life to prove himself to the Frye family who adopted him when he was 9 years old and of course he has "baggage" to deal with from that time prior to his adoption (sound familiar?). Enter the ever faithful personal assistant, Robyn Tindall, who manages Curtis and his life and is dedicated, loyal, and of course in love with her employer. Curtis wants out of the publicity and limelight that comes with being a major force in the business world and a Frye family member, so he comes up with a scheme that if he's engaged to be married, the media will lose interest in him. He picks Robyn, his personal assistant, and she agrees to be his fiancée.....initially. After realizing she can't fake being his fiancée because to her it is real......., she runs. Not the most mature action, but she is only 23. What surprises the reader is Curtis runs after her, trying to convince her to stay and continue the facade of their engagement. This is where the bulk of the story takes place with Curtis pulling out all the stops to get her to stay with him as his "fake" fiancée.
The banter between the characters is quick witted and clever, but I could have used a little more conversation between the characters at times as they try to figure out the path they are now on. Robyn and Curtis are drawn to each other and they're trying to figure out why, particularly Curtis. The sexual chemistry is intense and won't disappoint the reader.!!! Very romantic!!! I did feel the ending of the book was rushed somewhat and could have had a little more time spent on it, but all in all it was a delightful read and one I would recommend.
TBH, the story itself wasn't the worst in the world but the audiobook was so freaking dreadful I wanted to holler.
Plus, the PG-13?
U fucking serious?
Srsly, whoever thought this girl (Marie Hawkins) could narrate books, was srsly deranged.
It was like listening to Agnes from Despicable Me 2 reciting her Mother's Day poem to Gru in that very robotic, unexciting, devoid of any emotions voice.
And that is exactly how she practically killed this book for me and I srsly considered DNFing every 5mins when listening to that dull, repetitive tone that showed absofuckinglutely zero emotions and made me wanna throw my ipad out of the window and yell with frustration.
And, frankly, at first, I would've given this book more if it wasn't for the heroine who didn't know what she wanted and started annoying me nine ways to Sunday right from the start. That might have been due to the crappy narration, true, but after a few hours I just wanted to hit the end and be done with it. Plus, the completely unnecessary OW drama didn't help things, either.
That was all simply way too much for 176 pages.
However, I would've suffered through all this shit and kept my mouth shut if the story came with the PG-13 warning. But of course, it didn't. And the only thing I can say to this is exacly that:
And I waited like a fool. And waited, struggled through the idiocy that stole hours from my life and money from my bank account. I waited. Like a fucking lunatic. For these two to bump some juicy uglies.
And when they finally did in the last chapter? And that was something your pastor could read to your kiddies on your Sunday mass? I wanted to throw my ipad through the window again. Because WHAT THE FUCKING HELL!!!
How tf could u???
I must admit I haven't been this disappointed and this pissed off in a while. But hey, what can you do, right? Read and learn what to avoid in the future?
I received an ARC from Netgalley The Billionaire's runaway fiancée by Jenna Bayley-Burke is for me an amazing 5 star read. Robin Tindall had plans to be a party planner but since finishing college she's been unable to find the job that she wants to,so she joins a temp agency, where they send her to be an executive assistant to someone who has trouble letting someone stay in the job. On her first day there she's totally dismissed by Mr Frye but not one to be dismissed so easily Robin just steams on and gets to work, forward 8 months and she's still there but when a party planning job comes up Robin realises that she doesn't want it,she wants to stay where she is because she's fallen in love with her boss, she knows it will never go anywhere but she feels loyal to him anyway. Curtis Frye is a man who likes everything to run smoothly but when the new temp doesn't whimper at his feet he dismisses her but she won't leave, before long Curtis comes to heavily rely on Robin,as she's trustworthy and loyal something he hasn't found much of in his life. When he puts a proposal to Robin he expects everything to continue to run smoothly but Curtis has a bit of a tragic past that continues to haunt him and when Robin tries to break through his walls Curtis runs not realising he has to deal with his past to hope to give him and Robin a future they both deserve. This was an amazing piece of writing,I couldn't put the book down, from the first page to the last it held my attention without letting me up for air. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

4.5 stars
Quick read that keeps the reader engrossed in the world that is Robyn and Curtis. A Cinderella story, where he calls her out on it and says that he is unable to fulfill her fairy-tale. But will he make her dreams come true or will she Runaway broken-hearted.
Robyn is such a sweet soul. It leaps off the pages and you wish that she was your best friend. But when she falls for her boss she realizes that she is way over her head. She is so willing to help and make his life easier that she gives everything. When the moments get to tense she runs. Leaving her heart in the church.
Curtis is a great leading male that has many layers that need to be evaluated to determine who he really is. It's amazing to see how he reveals himself to Robyn, letting her into his world, letting her love him but doesn't realize that he is capable of love. That he is lovable. Will he realize it before it's too late?
I loved that the title actually had something to do with the book. I have read so many that the two don't correlate. Well written and I was sad to let go of the characters. Thank you for sharing this story with me.
ARC Review: The Billionaire's Runaway Fiancee (Invested in Love) by Jenna Bayley-Burke
He's a jerk. She's a dreamer. Simple right? NOT! There is more to Curtis and Robyn. He wallows in regrets. She needs a reason to hope. Both are searching for that missing part of themselves. Perhaps, they've already found it. The Billionaire's Runaway Fiancee is part childhood fairy tale, part heartwarming romance. Ms. Burke is not afraid to blend the classics with the modern. She has a style that works for her and gets the heart involved every time.
I enjoyed this novel, but didn't always like the characters. Lily is a young woman who has been sheltered her entire life when her father dies, while Jake is a self made wealthy man who has set his sights on Lily as his future wife. Lily doesn't know how to solve the mess her life has become, but is sure that Jake isn't part of the solution.
I enjoyed the push/pull between the characters, but found myself wanting to reach into the book and shake some sense into them - from the naive Lily and her unrealistic outlook on life, to the antagonistic Jake who refuses to explain himself and creates or exacerbates so many of the problems.
This is a worthy read, but not my favorite by this author.
This story had great potential but I found the female lead a little tiresome. I realize she was the over protected and sheltered daughter of a powerful man. Her naivety about her situation was still annoying. Pride is good to a certain point. She was wary of Jake. She didn't trust her feelings about him. Jake has wanted Lily since he met her. He is a alpha male that gets what he wants. At times he came off a little to domineering with Lily and she did not react well to that. He had her best interest at heart and was sincere in his pursuit. He didn't sugar coat anything and was upfront about things. His feeling for her ran deep and even he didn't know the extent. It was a good read for a rainy afternoon.
This book was going so strong. I had just started loving Jake and Lily when the OW enters. WHAT A WASTE OF GOOD BOOK. Jenna Bayley-Burke, you could have done without the ow. Seriously!!! Why the hell was the ow needed. After Lily's father died with mountains of debts, Jake comes as Knight in Shining Armor. It was going good. Lily hates him still Jake loves her. A good Heroine hates but Hero loves trope was going on. Everything was going beautiful. Then enters the OW. Jake brings her to make Lily jealous. He didn't correct Lily when she says the Ow is his girlfriend or mistress. That was so bad. And it made me hate Jake. I lost interest after this. A Big DNF and LOST INTEREST.
Enjoyed this one so much! Curtis Frye appears to be the typical get whatever he wants billionaire boss but he was so much deeper than that. With his own personal demons he has sworn off ever getting too involved with women. The media is making things hard for him though and having a fiance would solve most of his problems. That's were his assistant Robyn comes in. She's hardworking and dedicated. Perfect for his plan. He may promise her the world but he can't give her the one thing she wants the most....to own his heart.
This one is very well done. Great writing and interesting characters with a bit of depth I didn't expect made this one a wonderful read. I highly recommend it.
At first I had a hard time getting into the story. It seemed to jump around between Robyn and Curtis quite a bit. It could have been my own mind racing around as I read. But I am glad I stuck with it. Robyn was a uniquely fresh character. She was honest to a fault and a heart of gold. I love how she was all in and would not accept less than what she gave. Curtis grew on me throughout the book. And when he finally had his "aha" moment, it was very sweet and loving.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.
They say actions speak louder than words. In The Billionaires Runaway Fiancee, that's definitely the case with Curtis. You can see it with all the little things that he does to make Robyn happy, and the way that he's always touching her. Robyn needs the words. Unfortunately by him telling her that he's unable to love, that's all she hears. I really liked how real they get with each other. No lies between them at all.
I enjoyed the story for what it was but found it hard to feel a real connection to the characters. Overall a good romance - typical office romance in many ways but then with a twist when the heroine decides to run!
Safe read - no cheating, no OW or OM drama.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Love this author. And this book is just as good as the rest. Lily and Jake are a couple destined to be together but trust issues and jealousy are always in the way. Trust to let each other knowing the truth causes them much unneccessary heartache but eventually proves to be just the catalyst to push them together.
Fake relationship meets May to December contemporary romance 'Least I think I read that he was older. Weak heroine. I couldn't understand the reasoning for her initial nastiness.
This review is based on the ARC received from the author and/or the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
The strongest emotion I felt while reading, The Billionaire's Reluctant Fiancee, was mad. I was mad at Jake for not opening up and setting Lily straight. And at Lily for not trusting Jake when he's given her no reason not to. Only the end half of the last chapter actually shows them being happy.
I expected a romantic comedy but this book was not in any way humorous. Both characters are incredibly damaged and both have insane amounts of baggage. In a real life scenario this would not end well. It wasn’t my favorite story but it was well written and well developed.
I sometimes think Jake tries too hard, “if you want to be, I can make some calls, get you right back at the top of the list. As you should be. Whatever will make you happy. Just tell me, and it’s done." I really liked this book, although I thought Jake made more problems for himself than necessary.
The Billionaire's Runaway Fiancée is a light, modern take on the Cinderella fairytale. If you have an hour or two to kill, and are in need of some frothy escapism, this might be the story for you.
Robyn has just taken a temp position as billionaire Curtis Frye's Executive Assistant. She's already been warned that she most likely will be fired before the end of the day, so she's not expecting much. Curtis isn't expecting much either, so Robyn's tenacity surprises him and he keeps her on. They develop a good working relationship and she organizes his working life perfectly. When he comes to the realization that he needs a fiancée to keep the media off his back, Robyn is the only person he can think that will be able to fulfill that role, and not expect anything emotional out of it. Of course, as the fairytale goes, she falls in love, and so does he, but he needs to come to that realization first and allow himself to feel.
Although I enjoyed The Billionaire's Runaway Fiancée, I didn't love it for a couple reasons: I never connected completely to either Robyn or Curtis, and I never believed wholeheartedly in their feelings toward each other. Because Curtis was so closed off for most of the story, it dampened any strong feelings I could have imbued him with, and honestly, I couldn't see that Robyn had strong feelings for Curtis, either. There was a major disconnect between what I was being told they felt and what I could really connect to.
I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
Curtis has been having trouble keeping an assistant as they tend to leave upon seeing the scope of duties entailed with working for him. When he meets the temp, Robyn, he immediately views her as lacking and informs her she's no longer needed.
Robyn, unable to find a job in her preferred field of event planning, is determined to keep the assignment and sets about proving her worth. Almost a year later, she's mastered her duties and proven herself invaluable? to her boss...the man she's fallen for, the same one that doesn't seem to realize she exists as other than an employee.
Things are about to get shaken up though as Robyn learns Curtis has just made a certain list regarding the ten people to watch. While this isn't necessarily a big deal as Curtis made the list the previous year as well, the fact that he made all ten spots is huge and brings a lot of unwanted attention onto him.
Curtis prefers to keep his private life just that and worries that if too much of the spotlight is shined on him, the truth of his heritage may be revealed and he's become annoyed with his name getting romantically linked with almost every woman he has any kind of contact with. He's got the perfect solution, though he's trying not to think too much on way he only pictures Robyn for the role. Now if he can just talk her into it. Surprisingly though, Robyn agrees, believing this could be her chance.
"Now, she had better access to show him how things could be if he let himself feel something for her. It was the only hope she had to be more to him than an employee. He’d love her. Someday." - Robyn
Of course, since she's only seen him twice in the month since his bombshell, and he already has the whole charade planned, as in, a long engagement, curiosity fades, and end scene, Robyn worries she's in for nothing more than a broken heart.
Now if only Curtis could force his thoughts to stop focusing on Robyn in a way they never had before, well, at least not that he'll admit to just yet.
"He had no idea what to do with this developing attraction to Robyn, so he stuck to business." - Curtis
But what happens when Robyn realizes her dreams are only wishful thinking and Curtis doesn't seem to want to love? How will Curtis react when Robyn leaves, refusing to continue their arrangement? Will he follow her for purely personal reasons? Or is he still only focusing on what's better for the company? Can Curtis and Robyn agree to give a true relationship a chance? Can they admit their feelings for one another? Will Curtis confront his past, knowing his fear of turning into his Dad has ruled his life and heart for too long? Will Curtis and Robyn get their HEA?
“I will be with you, or I will be with no one. Your choice." - Curtis
One-click now and follow along as two people, one wanting the fairy tale as the other refuses to believe in it, learn to fight for who and what they truly want and need.
