Just when you think everything’s getting better, everything turns out to be worse. This is the story of eleven particular teenagers’ lives. Three of them just saw the only place they’ve ever known burst into flames and now they’re on the run again. They meet a new girl along the way and though they don’t know any of her history, they have no choice but to trust her. As the teens’ histories unravel, their friendship grows tighter only to be tested that much more. Living on a whole other continent is not an easy feat anyhow, especially when you’re living with a bunch of kids that just a few months ago were complete strangers. However, each other is all the Outcasts have and they will soon realize that having some to lean on in this crazy world is a great deal.
Abbie Payne (she/her) is the indie young adult fantasy and science fiction author of works such as The Secret Two, America Gone, Call Her Captain, and Curse of Olympus. She fell in love with writing at eleven years old, and since then, she has been dedicated to writing books that help people feel like they’re a little less alone. She’s often writing about found families, people who walk on the road less traveled, and - as one complete stranger on Instagram once put it - destroying the concept of traditional femininity, one word at a time. Abbie grew up right outside of Houston, Texas where she fought through dark moments and many sleepless nights that now deeply inspire her works. She is a college student who plans to eventually get a Ph.D. in women’s and LGBTQ+ history but is currently working on an associate’s degree in general studies. She currently lives there with her grandmother, mother, and retired service dog, Yoda, while obsessing over Greek mythology, crystals, and yelling about why she wasn’t told about some historical figure or another.
This series, The Outcasts, is an exciting epic story of a group of young adults who persevere through hardship and condemnation. It is a reminder that in this world, we might meet up with many obstacles and forces that try to beat us down, but in the end, friendship and acceptance CAN be found. Enjoyable read by up and coming young author, Annie Payne.
