Since Laura Lippman’s debut, she has been recognized as a distinctive voice in mystery fiction and named one of the “essential” crime writers of the last 100 years. Stephen King called her “special, even extraordinary,” and Gillian Flynn wrote, “She is simply a brilliant novelist.” Her books have won most of the major awards in her field and been translated into more than twenty-five languages. She lives in Baltimore and New Orleans with her teenager.
This was a short story, and I found it really off-putting at many levels. I think it was intended as satire, but I just couldn’t get on board with it. There were multiple cases of animal abuse, but I also found the characterizations/caricatures of different personality types too extreme to enjoy.
(I read this as part of the book Christmas Crimes at the Mysterious Bookshop, published 2024. Since I’ve read some other Lippman, I wanted to rate this individually for my GR data for Lippman.)
