It was never about love. It was never about want. It was only about need.
Zane needs Allie. It is in his blood, an obligation coursing through his veins, and when you’re being pulled by a force as powerful as being mated to another, there isn’t much you can do to stop it. No matter how much you want to.
Allie is counting down the days to her 21st birthday when she can leave town and be freed from all pack commitments. Zane is next in line to rule their pack as the Alpha. The only thing these two have in common is their mutual disdain for one another, so when their inner wolves connect, life gets really complicated.
What do you do when the one person who is supposed to be the whole purpose of your life, is the same person making your life a living hell?
I read some reviews stating the alpha Zane was a jerk. I didn't see too much else other than he's a pain blah, blah, blah. I had some interest in the idea that "fated mates" didn't like each other and had to figure it out. I had some hope that this would be a mates story with a twist but a happy ending. Let me get to the point. It totally blows up to the very end. Just read the first chapter, the last chapter and epilogue. Done. Both Zane and Allie are horrible to each other throughout the whole book. If you like hypocrisy, double standards, cheating (complete understatement), zero respect for your mate and just cruel behavior then this book is for you. I'm so angry I wasted my time when I could have read something with true content.
The crappiness started with an interesting portrayal of the Female MC. The popular girl aka the resident biyatch and vamp aka Ebony and the popular yet sidekick Taylor starts by describing Allie as a "not nice" and "nasty". I was like - "wow, may be we have a badass heroine".
Nah.
It all went downhill from here. First we have a grade A jerk Zane as the male MC. He is the next pack alpha. Occasionally he spits out noble intentions and stuff like pack loyalty, but he is introduced as a shitty person who sleeps and talks about it. Lets also not forget that apparently this 'next-in-line' leader had no idea of the name of a girl who's his class mate as well as his pack member. Wow. If you want a jerk as a male MC go ahead. Would be a nice change. But in between Simone gets moral qualms and tries to portray him as half way decent which is not just confusing but irritating as hell. Zane has also a split personality. Half the time he is all 'I don't want this horrible mate, let me sleep with my best girl friend out of the blue or cheat publicly or humiliate my mate as I feel like'. The other half takes over when he sees Allie getting comfy with other guys and he goes all protective macho on her. As if he had any rights to behave so!
Next we have the regular YA heroine - victim of fate, trying to be bold but not really, whiny and clingy. Yes, clingy. The way she clings on to Zane is just cringe-worthy. She behaves like a 12 year old instead of an 18year old, when it comes to making life decisions. All her internal thoughts go up and down like 'I hate Zane', 'I want f Zane' and 'I love Zane'... All this while the guy is either ignoring her or sleeping with another girl or publicly rejecting her or just acting like a Male Chauvinistic Pig..
Finally we have plot situations that is soo MEH. The scene where Zane discovers Allie is his mate is when Allie and Ebony are fighting. The fight is soooo intense that Allie is apparently close to shifting. But then we are given no reasons for such a sudden fight. Why exactly are 2 people - one popular vamp and the other social outcast, suddenly fighting when they apparently don't have any common factors?
In one, Allie wants to leave the town and Zane discovers it and suddenly they go from 'friends' to 'enemies who still want to f each other'. No sensible discussion on why she made that decision and how it affects them as mates. Drama for the sake of Drama.
Next we have a fake 'relationship' drama between Allie and Taylor - they decide to jointly deceive their families into thinking they are mates. All cos Taylor wants a new car. Apparently in spite of being born and brought up in a pack, they are ignorant of the fact that lying about mates is a huge deal. So of course Allie feels self pity when she is victimized - poor poor thing who knew! And lets not forget the noble reason why Allie decided its a good idea to lie to her family and pack for no real benefits - she wanted to make Zane jealous. Lets also not forget that Zane was most likely sleeping around or making out with other girls during this time.
Then we are introduced new characters like Zane's brother, ,more cheating by Zane, Allie's sad attempts at cheating and at making Zane jealous...
There is no logic to their behaviors or any background. Overall a waste of time
Tainted Romance is a standalone a shifter romance featuring Zane, the future Alpha, and Allie, a bit of a misfit. First, there is very little romance, the main characters spend much of the book arguing, being hateful, disrespecting each other. This is the first book I think I have read where true mates don't like each other.
Zane is a man-whore, we get to see him hook up with numerous partners throughout the book. He has an ongoing friends with benefits with Ebony.
Allie is abrasive, antisocial, and has a friends with benefits relationship with her BFF Blake.
The book is a bit of a train wreck, it doesn't help that it's rather long so you are spinning around the "I hate you-I want you-I'm jealous" hamster wheel for SOOO many pages. Like literally no characters in the book are likeable except Chase and Ryker, and their parts are small. Most of the story is made up of Zane and Allie taking turns rejecting, and hurting each other. The main issue the couple struggles with most of the book is that Allie hates pack life, and is forever threatening to leave. Zane has been raised his entire life to take over the lack. In Allie’s words “I had disrespected the pack my whole life. I never pitched in. I never participated, I never tried with other members. “
It got so old, the main OW is Ebony, and she is so nasty and mean I hated that Zane continued to be friends with her...and have sex with her for a while...but just to show you how fucked up the story is...Allie doesn't really care!! Sure she gets a bit jealous, but not enough to have a conversation, or to stop her from making out with others. They both act like assholes at various points of the book. I'm granting the 1 star because I actually finished it, cuz there were several times I just wanted to give up.
Spoilers ahead...
Then when they FINALLY get together marking each other at 78%... after 100’s of pages of arguing ....they still fight and break up repeatedly. This is just one example of the immature BS throughout the book. After the morning of their mating she gets a call from Blake the ex fuck buddy and informs Zane she’s going with him... maybe for the weekend; he’s had a fight with his mate and sad. When Zane is pissed...cuz what sane man wouldn’t be.. she tells him “you made this decision much easier” cuz clearly you don’t know me thinking I would fuck him... then after going there they get ready to crawl into bed, where he strips her tank and skirt off leaving her in her G-string... but he’s seen it all before so no biggie... really. When she realizes he wants to have sex, she leaves, but she doesn’t change. She still carries on the same ol BS, telling Zane to leave the next day because Blake’s in his way. Then that skank Ebony lies about sleeping with Zane and she believes it, and goes away for the weekend with the plan to sleep with Blake!!! Kissing him, she repeatedly tells Zane she can’t trust him, but she’s the one undressing and sucking face with her ex.
Tainted Romance is a shifter romance written by Simone Elise. This book is definitely different from shifter books I have read to date. There really wasn't a lot about shifting in this story besides a couple of scenes when they actually shifted, so it was a tad weird. It was more about the werewolves having mates and the mental connection they can have and how that affected our main characters. The plot was basically about how our main characters Allie and Zane continuously went out of their way to hurt each other and went from really liking each other to hating each other. I don't understand how two people that are so close to actually being adults are incapable to actually sit down and have an actual talk about their relationship! Both were way too eager to jump to conclusions instead of actually talking about things. The pace of the book was too slow for me and it definitely felt dragged out with the constant hot cold between the two characters.
All in all this was just average for me. The main characters just didn't feel very real to me and were a tad one dimensional. I could definitely not relate to any of them and struggled a bit to get through this book.
Voluntary review of Advance Reader Copy. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher.
I had to take some time and think about what I wanted to say about this book. Overall, I am not a fan. The POV mainly flipped between the main characters. But occassionaly, a random part of a chapter would be from someone else. It didn't make sense and ruined the flow for me. Characters and plot points showed up abruptly and then were never mentioned again. The main male character was annoying, rude, and I just wanted him to go away 90% of the book. There was cheating and broken hearts and pettiness most of the book. Overall, I found it a confusing and frustrating read.
In all fairness, this is a decent shifter book but it was so repetitive and the internal bantering was a bit overloaded. It was the same conversations wordered nearly the same chapter after chapter. They want to be together 'cause they're mates, they hate each other, they don't want to be together, they sleep around, they still want to be together, he loves her but hates her. She loves him but hates him. It became ridiculous. Throw in a mom who is totally shady, a pack alpha who seems weak and under developed relationships with her brother and father and it just felt unfinished. There aren't any over the top dramatic or enthralling portions.
This book is really not about werewolves or even a paranormal lifestyle. Rather, it uses some of those aspects to justify this bizarrely questionable love story. It reads like teen age angst and gets just as tiring with repeatedly indecisive behavior. It does not have a lot of depth. The love seems a bit contrived and unconvincing but is justified by the mate bond. The strife is dramatic and in a way keeps you hooked but over all, the story could be a bit more condensed because after a while even the on again off again relationships get boring. It's a bit of a soap opera but is entertaining but don't expect to really like any of the characters.
I really liked this book. The story has substance and is well developed. I was hooked from the start, never bored, and didn't want to stop reading until the book was finished! It was so easy to get into the mindset of the characters and feel as though I was a part of the story; which is what I consider the most important aspect of story telling. If I can't connect with the story, I have a very hard time getting through the book (if I get through it at all). Anyway, the emotions this story brought out were numerous and the writing is excellent. I highly recommend this book!
First of all they shifted into wolves one time that I counted, so if you're very into romance and not that into paranormal this is a good one for you. Also this book was three times longer than it needed to be; the author didn't have a concept of when the same events kept repeating themselves.
Mates, a earth shattering love, with passion and loyalty. This book doesn't have that. It defies mates as something that is a joke. Cheating, fighting the pull, and pure selfishness. I personally hated the book and will not read anything else by this author.
It wasn't super captivating and I didn't even end up finishing half the book. It was tacky, I didn't like the dialogue, and the plot was all over the place. It just goes to say that I have definitely read better were books than this one.
Story was ok. I think the overall love story became redundant. Same thing over and over and over. At first I could understand people don’t just change overnight and it says a lot about character development, but to have the same problems playing on repeat is a little tiring.
3.5 stars I guess. Plot holes or rather random story lines and characters are forgotten about. The relationships are all toxic and they all need therapy including the main character’s father.
Allie is a high school girl who has trouble fitting in...with the rest of the werewolf pack, many of whom are also students at the local high school. Zane Harris is the polar opposite as he is the popular alpha-to-be as well as an athlete and ladies' man. On paper, the two of them being a couple is a ludicrous idea and both of them know it. However, teen werewolves don't always have a choice as to the people that their inner wolves recognize as mates. As connections are built and secrets revealed, this unlikely pairing will be tested on multiple levels. The question becomes: does this pairing have any chance of working out?
Normally, I try not to talk about myself in a review, but what I'm about to say has bearing on this novel by Simone Ellis. As a reader in my later 40s, I wasn't sure how much I was going to be able to identify with the characters or get involved with the story. The book overcame my reservations. Ellis has a fantastic ability with dialogue that helps distinguish her characters and gives each one a distinct voice. While the narration shifts perspectives a little unevenly, I found myself laughing at certain lines and easily picturing Allie as she navigates all the complications her life throws at her. Also, the further I read the more I understood this particular world the author was building, and was pleasa ntly surprised at some of the turns the story takes.
This work has a lot going on in terms of the plot, and the pacing isn't consistent...but there's plenty of material to enjoy here, and it is a complete story in one work. The best thing is that this book is both enjoyable and involving. I think it's fair to say that if I can be won over by this piece of writing, then many others should find this novel a worthy read.
(Independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock)
So I gave 2 stars & this is why!. This book is over 400 pages (I think) & 72 chapters. 70 of those chapters is the main characters (Zane & Allie) acting like spoiled 5yrs old. ×××SPOILER ALERT ××× ZANE is a male alpha slur in the making. So in the start of this book Zane finally notices Allie & they both realized there's each other's mate. (Now to my understanding finding ur mate is huge, is something you can't control. It takes over every need a shifter has) . Not for them 2. So blake is Annie's best friend w/benefits & Ebony is Zane's best friends w/benefits. So Allie & Ebony end up fighting. We never knew why the fight even started. ZANE finds out that Allie is planning on leaving as soon as she turns 21. She hate the pack & everything that represents. ZANE was not happy abt that since he felt she doing not be an alpha's mate material. So once he apologized they would be happy for one sentence & than something else happened that gotten them fighting once again. Sometimes it hard to keep up between adding the wrong name of the person's point of you, to adding a completely random person's point of view like Blake/Taylor. Also the would have a conversation& the next sentence saying days has passed. Their stupid immature way of fighting everything including each other was getting cookbooks annoying I felt like quitting most of the time. I this story had a lot of potential if they cut out the unnecessary fighting between them. At one point she meets her 1st best friend that she said was visiting back or moved back- it's something like that.... But they never brought him again! Why being this character at all.
Before reading this book just Like everyone else I look at the reviews and although the reviews for this book weren’t good I did however give it a chance to which I can say I don’t regret. I know this may be confusing considering the fact that I gave this book 2 stars however I only did so due to the message that I feel like this book gives off. Which I obviously don’t agree with. I feel that after reading this whole book, that the author is romanticizing cheating along with verbal abuse. Throughout the story the two main characters agree not to date and to just be friends and although this is what they agree to the main character Zane is always jumping to conclusions and making Allie feel bad about doing nothing and of course she will get mad at him and later forgive him. Along with Zane and Allies story the author mixes in Blake and Ebony’s story aswell but with them the author romanticizes cheating to which I also don’t agree with. I understand the whole mate bond that the shifters feel for one another but I don’t think that they should be cheating on one another or verbally abusing one another and later come back together. With that being said I do think that the author put in a lot of time with this book and I do believe that her writing technique was good I wasn’t ever truly annoyed with the book but again I don’t agree with the message that it is sending to the audience so therefore I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend but I would give one of her other books a chance if it’s message was better !
This book was so full of relationship problems it stressed me out!! I swear just thinking about them makes my headache even stronger. A headache it gave me! But I just couldn't let it down! This book is so fudging amazing. Sure maybe the relationship took way to long to develop and a whole day to read(which was 72 chapters before the epilogue) but it was totally worth It. I'm a little disappointed we didn't hear much about her brother or dad and more on what happened there and whether they will have problems because of the group they are in so yeah. If you love hardheaded people and a relationship which seems it won't make it but somehow overturns boundaries during hard times and makes the best of it(most of the time) (fights it, loophole, gives up, fights, fails, and fights even harder than ever before) than this book is the one for you. And now that I've described it and seen how truly amazing it is my headache is gone to. Lmao so it is worth it. ☮️
3.5 solid stars. Why not 4? The angst in this book felt forced, and on a constant 'he did this' 'she did that' loop that in the end got tedious and frustrating. A book that is 75% cheating, fighting and hating, is not something I enjoy reading. It makes me feel angry and depressed, and that's not what I read for. The execution of the writing was okay, character development was okay, the world building was average. I would have liked the author to explore this world of shifters a little deeper, rather than focus all her attention on the drama between the teenage characters. In regards to the genre, this book is not Y.A, and I've noticed a couple of reviews that say it is. The book contains adult situations, including sexual content. I'd slip it into NA, although the central characters are still in high school.
A YA romance between Allie and Zane. An excellent read full of drama, suspense, anger, betrayal, forgiveness and love. Multiple POV’s made the experience of reading more real. The characters were well developed and the story plot was about fated mates. Allie and Zane found out they were meant to be together before they really got to know each other. This caused a lot of problems for the couple. The story follows them through their ups and downs, their back and forth relationship. Had me reading from page one to the end. Highly recommended. I voluntarily received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book from Exclusive ARC.
Another great story! I like that each shifter story from this author is different than the last. I enjoyed reading this book so much. --Mild Spoilers!-- Best friends Blake and Allie had so much history and chemistry that I was really rooting for them for a while. I really did not like Ebony and hated that she ended up with Blake. Zane was giving me whiplash but I am glad he got it together after everything. I felt there were a few loose ends with some of the characters like Allie's family and Zane's family but it still was not bad. I am glad with how things worked out in the end for everyone. It was a rollercoaster ride for sure, though.
I promised BB I’d read something “sparkly” with her. When will I ever fucking learn?
((Bangs-head-on-desk))
THIS WAS SO BAD...the writing was so awful.
I almost made a new shelves for it...
Worst. Heroine. Ever.
Go. Back. To. Your. Day. Job.
Then I realized how many books she’s written, and, then, how many were on my PASS shelf ((XD)) I think I’ll add the rest. This shit didn’t even make sense. It was one long argument between H/h. All of which made fuck all sense. I could have LOVED this plot, it’s my jam. Cheating mates and OW/OM...YES. But that sex convo about the h between the H/OM...CRINGE!!! This was like bad twi-fic.
Okay. I really wanted to like this book. Like really wanted to like it. It was awful. Allie and Zane are so toxic and they make zero sense. There are so many plot holes and things/people that were introduced for only one reason and then never talked about again. Allie’s mom is terrible.
Don’t get me started on Ebony and Blake. Blake deserves so much better. Ebony is such a useless character who’s only reason for existing is to cause drama. There is no redemption. She’s just awful. Poor Blake, who also sucks in his own way. There were almost no redeeming qualities to any of these characters. No one grew. No one matured. They all just suck.
*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from Inkitt*
This is between a 4 and 5 star rating for me. I've read another series of this author and they write in a way that reminds me of LKH, who seriously dragged me in with her books that never seemed to end in a good way. It's like wishing it didn't stop and actually getting more. I first got confused about their age but I think that's on me, otherwise things got very hot and it was entertaining. I personally love it, and if you love school drama, pack drama and all that emotional heartache and good feels, check it out.
I was really excited to read this book because of the werewolves and sounded like a I don’t like you to lover thing, but ugh this book. It just made me deep sigh and roll my eyes so many times during the 427 pages (71 chapters) of the book, yet I couldn’t put it down because it was like watching an accident and not being able to look away as it happens. This book is directed towards a certain audience, and I’m not apart of it apparently.
Kept me interested but could have used more action
This book was really good in the fact that I couldn't predict a lot of it. I do wish there had been more action-conflict like there is in most werewolf books instead of just having relationship conflict. I wish more had come from the lone wolves that hated pack life and wanted to destroy it. Like we hear about them but nothing ever comes from it. It was a good read though. Not too many writing errors that make it unreadable.
This is the story of Allie and Zane. He is the alpha's son. She wants to leave the pack. I have to say that I loved this book from start to finish. I certainly had a hard time putting it down and getting it out of my head. A definite five-star read.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book which was provided to me by Inkitt.
I really wish there was more book's to this!!! Like what's Rebecca's story? What happened with Jace and Allies Dad? Did Taylor and Chase ever find there own mate's??? Will Ryder and Alannah ever get back together or something..???
I don’t even understand why I finished reading this book. It was the same thing happening over and over and over again. What was 400+ pages should have only been 100. If it wasn’t for the telepathic connection that they Share it wouldn’t even be a shifter romance the disappointment is real.
