Cheesy noir...very cheesy noir. The story is so convoluted you can't help but chuckle at the whole thing as you go along. There isn't a well-rounded character in the entire thing (except maybe the dog?); the author threw everything she could think of to make the mystery difficult to solve, and it didn't work. Of course, the sensitivities (or lack thereof) of the late 40s are in there. This book is an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, but will most assuredly not tax the brain too much.

My favorite part? The way Ms. Ford described Johnnies (students of St. John's College in Annapolis) as being behind any trouble that happened after hours in the town. Being a Johnnie (albeit from the Santa Fe Campus, which wasn't in existence at the time the novel was written), I feel compelled to merely mention the matter and then let it drop.

This is the first book of Leslie Ford that I have read. And after reading this book I am glad to see that there are plenty more under her own name and the pseudonym Zenith Brown. A young doctor finds himself in love and a predicament. The police suspect that he is the killer. He tries to track down the killer to clear himself. I found myself baffled and suspecting several people in turn. A suspenseful story.
