This is an alternate cover edition of ASIN B078GWH8KV
The first book in a Curse Keepers spinoff series by New York Times bestselling author Denise Grover Swank writing as D.G. Swank.
Who's afraid of ghosts? Not Piper Lancaster, because even though she's a ghost whisperer, she's a skeptic. Piper helps her clients settle their inner demons, and that's good enough for her-even if ghosts aren't real.
That is until the astonishing reappearance of the ruins of the Lost Colony of Roanoke turns her world upside down. Now belief in the supernatural is at an all-time high, and people are seeing ghosts in every shadow.
There's one problem-the reemergence of the Lost Colony has awakened both the supernatural world and Piper's very real talent as a medium. The first time she actually sees a ghost, she thinks it's a hallucination, a joke, anything but what it really is.
But she's soon confronted with evidence she can't deny. Ghosts exist, and worse, so do demons. As if that weren't enough, Asheville has a new resident demon that's intent on killing her, and a sinfully handsome stranger who says she's the only one who can destroy it.
Barely able to accept the complete reversal in her convictions, Piper must discover-and embrace-her true identity before it's too late.
If there were more than 5 Stars Of Ash and Spirit would get more. I love Denise's original Curse Keeper's series and now we have the first in an amazing spin off. Piper is bloody awesome and I can't wait to see her develop over the next few books and I really love her friends I am reserving my opinion on Abel for now cause I really want to know what he is...lol and I'm thinking he really could go either way good/bad but it will be fun to read, as for Reverend Jack it's just an Ewwwww for me even if he is hot lol and yes I know some priests can marry but nope, just nope but as a sidekick in Piper's new kick ass life he could come in handy.
A great new supernatural read lot's of mystery, adventure and ghost busting .
Such an incredible book! I love how Denise is revisiting the Curse Keepers series through a new perspective and a new character. Piper Lancaster is fierce. I absolutely adore her. And even though it has been years since I read the original series, I had no trouble following this book. Denise designed it in such a way that the stories are related, but not dependent on each other. So, even readers who have not read the original series will be able to read this and follow the story. This is definitely a must read from a master storyteller.
This is a wonderful spin off of my absolute favourite The Curse Keepers series. I expected no less than that Of ash and spirit would be a really good book but that was tenfold better. Incredibly good! I love Piper the new character and her friends! They are a fantastic team! Denise did it again. Love just everything about this book! Storyline is spectacular and mind blowing. It's a must read! Hope everyone will love this new series as much as I do! Can't wait for the next book!
OH My Goodness and everything that goes bump in the night! I absolutely loved this book. Piper a medium who’s a skeptic of her own trade! She gets the shock of her life when she finds out she’s really been talking to ghost and not pretending! Then cue a magical mystery man and a hot priest??? (Don’t worry he’s not Catholic but he’s really into Demon) Piper has her hands full figure what’s real and what’s not but thankfully her two best friends are there to help out. This was book one of the Ash and Spirits series.
Wow. Where do I even start with this book? Piper is amazing. She’s such a strong female lead who I love. The story line is flawless. With just a hint of romance, it’s got everything you could want in an UF.
Once again Denise knocks it out of the park. She sucks you in and you get so into the story. The next generation Curse Keeper for sure. What started out as a little scam of actually talking and seeing ghosts to it actually happening was great.
This book was a bit out of the normal genre I choose to read, but I love DG Swank's Rose Gardner series so I gave this a try. I was anything but disappointed. This book hooked me from the start and my heart still hasnt stopped racing. I love the natural revealing of information as it kept me guessing the whole way through. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy!!! Take time to read this book. You wont be disappointed!
I am new to D G Swank but OMG! That was ace! Read in one sitting, housework be damned! Loved Piper and her crew and loved how her power ramped up as the story carried on. Loving the characters and looking forward to the next book. Am off now for any other books by this author and it looks like this is a divergence from another series, so yippee!
I received this ARC for an honest review. I am so happy to see this book. I loved everything about Of Ash And Spirit. you don't have to read The Curse Keepers first but you are going to want to go back ast some point and read. Also, if you don't remember or haven't read Piper makes a small appearance in Deadly summer.
Piper is a great character. She has a soft spot you can see works for her.... unless your her nasty, no good ex. Her dad leaves her a well and a mess that seems impossible to solve. She is hanging on to some difficult stuff when she finds she can talk to ghosts and one better or worse demons. Her awesome friends step up and help her find a spot to start at. They come through with the support she is going to need through this new journey. Yes we meet some hot guys. They sound like just this spice we look for in a book boyfriend. Although they are both on two different spectrums. I am glad these relations didn't take over the story. I hope we have some time to get to know them both.
I look forward to visiting with a old friend Ellie in the next book. She will be able to shine some light on some things for Piper.
I really hope everyone falls in love with this book. It is a smorgasbord of feelings you don't want to miss. This was a fast-paced story. I couldn't put down.
I have been a massive fan of Denise’s books for a few years now, I have come to know the genius and master storyteller that she is. The Curse Keepers is my favourite series. That’s pretty much hands down, so while I expected Of Ash and Spirt to be very very good I did not expect it to be as astounding as The Curse Keepers. I was completely wrong. Piper is a badass, the storyline was phenomenal and the build up was stellar. I am at the edge of my seat ready for the next one!!
There is no mistaking that you're still in the Curse Keeper world in this spin off series. It is astounding how Denise can weave a story to make you love the main character, Piper Lancaster. As I mentioned above, this series is a spin off series of The Curse Keepers (TCK). One does not need to read TCK series, but if you like to know what happened prior to meeting Piper I would suggest reading it. It’s the best of both worlds. I highly recommend reading this book!! I absolutely L❤️VE it!! It is my understanding that Ellie, Collin, & David will meet Piper in the second book, Of Fire and Stone!! Can’t wait!! If urban fantasy is your jam, look no further!! This book has your name written all over it.
I have been waiting what seems like forever for more on this story. I love Piper and admire how she adjusts to all the changes in her life. She is a take charge woman who doesn't put up with any bull. She dives right in to the ghost talking and dealing with demons. I can't wait for her to meet up with Ellie and see what happens next. If you haven't read The Curse Keepers, you can still read this and not be lost. The storyline is marvelous and I'm really intrigued by Abel and can't wait to find out more about him. This book had me totally captivated and breathlessly awaiting the next one.
I like the story about fake ghost hunter Piper who suddenly develops the ability to really communicate with the dead and discovers a hidden familial legacy as a demon hunter. I thought the pacing and action were good but found my self sighing with weary disappointment at the appearance of the garden variety mysterious hot guy that she is immediately drawn to who knows things but wont tell her for no good reason.
You definitely need to grab some snacks, throw on your pajamas, and get comfortable because once you land in the spiritual plane reading "Of Ash and Spirit", an urban fantasy novel by D.G Swank, you're going to be lost to this world forever! (Well, at least until you're finished anyways!). This is a story of a young woman who is about to embark on the soul searching adventure of a lifetime, discovering hidden secrets of her family's past that will truly enlighten her to who she is destined to be and her purpose awaiting to be fulfilled. By ten years old, she had lost both parents to a mysterious murder, and little did she know questions would soon be answered, much sooner than she'd expected. This book had me pulled in from the beginning until the end. It was so easy to connect with Piper Lancaster, the story's main character, and truly feel the emotion and energy radiating from her. Though Piper is still struggling from a fairly fresh breakup, and facing that she was now a law school, dropout, she is determined to figure out what her next step in life is, refusing to let her narcissistic ex-boyfriend Gill have a power over her newfound career choice. To top off all of Pipers current dilemmas, including possibly losing her share of her fathers law firm, the small town of Asheville and surrounding areas had began experiencing some 'supernatural' phenomena, things were beginning to mysteriously and unexplainably change with the sudden reappearance of the Lost Roanoke Colony and ghosts were becoming more real, no longer just town tales. Piper, along with her two best friends Rhys and Hudson, and find out what it truly means to be tested and have each others back as best friends. Along the way, Piper faces many challenges and setbacks, including being a person of interest in several murders, and meeting two men, Mr. Abel and the Priest, Jack Owen, who would soon become a big part in fulfilling her purpose and finding answers to her mysterious family heritage. This is a great read for anyone who loves a good mystery, supernatural phenomenon, and a little romance all tied into one story! Its a wonderful novel about self discovery, personal battles, and learning acceptance of who you are. I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends, I feel like there are so many different groups of people as well as different age groups that can really connect and engage with this story. I give this read a 10/10!
This was a fun, exhilarating thrill ride from start to finish. D.G. Swank has seamlessly brought us back to her Cruse Keeper World, with a new twist that I can not wait to see play out.
Of Ash and Spirit is a spin-off of The Cruse Keeper and Series and picks up shortly after the the events of the first series and introduces us to some new players in the game between humans and the spirit world. The author does a great job of weaving in the events of the first series into this book, that allows this book to be read as a stand alone.
Piper Lancaster is introduced and what an introduction. Piper has been through some really tough times and is now making a living by pretending to see dead people and to offer closure to living. It is clear from the begging that Piper is a little girl lost, never truly getting over the tragedy of her childhood. She is a women who is living with no real choices and letting life lead her around.
It isn't until Piper finally learns her talent of communicating with the dead, does she begin to see that her life is more then just existing and that she may have a real purpose in life. I love Piper's reaction to the truth. At first it was to deny it and then when she realized she couldn't, she decided to go all in and try to learn what she is and what her destiny is.
I also loved the introduction of two mysterious men into Piper's life Abel and Jack. They both have a connection to Piper and they seem both destined to be in her life for a reason. It's clear Piper wants and needs both of these men in her life and she doesn't want to let either of them go. I have a feeling this might get messy, but i'm excited to see how this all plays out and who these two men really are.
I really enjoyed this book and can say I am happy to be back in this world. This book left me with more questions, then answers and that is a good thing! I can not wait to see how Piper fits into this world and how her story will play out.

Another Lancaster is helping to save the world! Loving this new series, which introduces us to Piper, the Demon Slayer, who like all 'chosen' ones has a hard time accepting her role but by the end of the book has firmly stepped up and taken her responsibility. A law school dropout and amateur (albeit fake) spirit whisperer who only started the gig to get back at her slimy ex-boyfriend, starts to actually hear voices and then see ghosts and even demons before she determines the history as put forth by her murdered father is true and her career path is taking a new turn. Thrown into a mix of twists and turns as the story is told, she is trying to understand demons, find the special daggers she needs to slay said demons, as well as figuring out how to harness her power. She is surrounded by a great cast of characters...from her Grandmother, to her best friends Rhys and Hudson, to the Episcopalian priest who is not only interested in demons but Piper herself, and the mysterious, gorgeous Abel who seems to have similar powers but yet is forcing Piper to figure things out on her own as much as possible. I can't wait for the next book and the danger and action that are sure to ensue when Piper meets her cousin Ellie, The Curse Keeper. If you haven't read the Curse Keeper series, it's a great reference to what started everything and an another amazing series, you can't go wrong!
Have you read the Curse Keepers? OMGosh, if you have, you’re going to love this new series. If not, this is a standalone book, and you won’t feel lost in anyway reading it. It is sort like the cousin to the original series, but a whole new cast to discover.
Now I am normally a Rom-Com reader, I enjoy lots of laughs but I am also a Denise Grover Swank fan. There is something with her books they ties them together giving you the same feeling about them. I think it is the way she writes her characters, they are colorful and rich, stimulating and full of depth. Some are more sassy than others, some more wit and some are badass like Piper Lancaster. I am not going to giveaway and spoilers here, but know that you don’t even have to be a follower of Urban Fantasy to love this book/series. It will enchant you from the very beginning and keep you magnetized till the end. I especially enjoyed the medium side to Piper, as this is something I wish I could do. I am so looking forward to book two and where Piper is heading.
*I am grateful for the copy provided by the author for my honest opinion. **Reviewed by Monique for JoandIsaLoveBooksBlog.
I fell in love with Denise's books through her Rose Gardner series, and I've since branched out into her other books.
This book caught my attention within the first 2 chapters. Easily you could see activity and suspenseful moments that only increased through the book. I wasn't aware that this was a spin-off at all, but it doesn't even matter. Denise's ability to create a 'new' series/spin-off is seamless! She's able to completely throw you into the start of things without needing a huge backstory (of course now I'm going to read the original that started this). Here you get to really see the growth of the main character, and Denise has a way of doing this with each individual character she writes about. You get to see a ton of growth. It takes real skill to not only create a character but to write about an actual and realistic growth cycle within them. Her words really bring you into the story, and it makes reading her books so much more enjoyable! This book is truly worth the read! I absolutely LOVE the plot!! I absolutely couldn't put it down!
An excellent Spin-Off series of The Curse Keepers (haven't read that series? No worries, read them after this ;)) I'm usually reserved when it comes to Urban Fiction due to repetition among different series. Denise has picked something unique and has knocked it out of the ball park (again) with this new series.
Being introduced to Piper, you'll be sure to love her. I love how open she is with the supernatural affects that have suddenly taken over her life which is so refreshing from keeping everything a secret from those cloest to you. I love the strong friendship bonds that Piper has with Rhys and Hudson.
As usual, with Denise's books, at the end of this book my heart is being torn with who to trust. I'm worried that if I back one team my heart will be crushed throughout the series. Nonetheless, I am left with a book hangover; not just wanting, but needing more Piper in my life.
I know that Denise has already stated that this new trilogy is a stand alone series, I hope that one day there will be a Curse Keepers cross over.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous at reading this book. Denise completed the original Curse Keepers series with such an awesome yet open-ended conclusion, I worried that this spin-off would not fill the uber-awesome shoes of its predecessor. Holy wowza, was I wrong! I am so incredibly thrilled that I took the chance on Of Ash and Spirit!! It was fantastic. Denise did it again! I loved the entire story, from beginning to end. Without giving anything away, I have to say that this storyline was very different than the Curse Keepers series but still very enjoyable. And I love that it drew bits and pieces from it. Plus Denise tweeted that Ellie and Colin will be appearing in the next installment of the series. I am now on the edge of my seat, waiting for the spring so I can get my hands on that one, too! Thanks for continuously entertaining us with your amazing words, Denise. :)
I am an avid reader of Swank, but I think Piper is my new favorite character!! She is spunky and a badass! I recommend reading the Curse Keepers first if you have not read them, but you don’t have too. That being said, you will want to after reading this book just to understand all of the references. I love how Swank incorporates other characters from other series! It gives you a piece of them while waiting for their next adventure. If you want to take an adventure into the mystery of Ronoak Island, join Piper and experience the thrilling, mysterious adventure of ghosts, demons, hot priests and the sexy Mr. Able. Swank sucks you into the story and makes you feel like you can be apart of Pipers badass group of sidekicks. I cannot wait until the next book!
Huge fan of this author, I have read everything she has written. I was awarded a free copy of this book to post my honest review on it. It has been awhile since I read the Curse Keepers series and I didn't realize this was a spin off until a few chapters in. That being said, I don't feel you need to have read the other series in order to understand what is going on in this book. The author does a great job of pulling in the details needed that correlated to the previous series (helpful for me - even though I read the series). I LOVE the ghost-hunting adventurer Piper, I was an instant fan of the main character. She is quirky and interesting and to see the change in her from the beginning to the end of the book was believable and makes me excited for the next book in the series.
Wow! I was lucky enough to win a Facebook raffle and receive a copy of this book. I’m a fan of Denise Grover Swank. I love her witty, lovable characters. I love her writing style and have read a few of her series. This was my first supernatural book by D.G. Swank and it will not be my last. You almost instantly fall in love with Ghost hunter Piper. The story has a heart racing, page turning, stay up all night because you HAVE to find out what happens next, storyline. The mystery men that cross Piper’s path keep you guessing who she can trust. If you enjoy the supernatural genre you will love this book. If you think supernatural stories aren’t your thing, this book might be the one to change your mind. Does not disappoint!
I absolutely loved this book. D.G. Swank has written a captivating story that has me impatiently waiting for the next book in Piper's journey.
The characters have drawn me in and kept me engrossed and wanting more throughout their journey. All characters are relatable without being predictable. I was left with questions and hopes for Piper and her friends.
I absolutely loved The Curse Keepers series. It is not necessary to read the previous series to enjoy Of Ash and Spirit. However, if you loved this book as much as I did, I recommend reading the series to enhance your experience with this book.
I hope a crossover will come in following books. Piper and Ellie together would definitely be a force to recon with.
loved it, so much action and intrigue. Piper does not know where to turn and who to trust. With the help of her friends she slowly uncovers who she is and is still learning. Ghost whisperer or demon slayer or both. She still has so much to discover. Can’t wait for the next book
I was a fan of ghost whisperer and this book had a similar vibe. It drew me in and kept me enthralled.
Piper was a likeable character, she had a naivety about her yet a hidden strength that was clear to all except her. Abel was clearly one of the leading male roles, i had a love hate relationship with him. His character kept a lot of secrets and played games with Piper, however there was that instant draw between them that said surely he couldn't be all bad.
The twists and turns in the plot had my mind grasping onto different conspiracy theories, turning allies to enemies and trying to decipher the clues. I feel there is still a lot left to discover and can't wait for book 2.
This books lays a good amount of groundwork for the trilogy. Piper isn’t quite your strong kick ass heroine but she does have her moments. This books also has some relationship interests but it will be interesting to see what “fate” has planned. I don’t feel you necessarily need to read the curse keeper trilogy but I think it will clear up questions about Roanoke, Native American beliefs in this world, and the idea of spirits, ghosts, and demons. It will be interesting to see where the next book takes the Cursed world.
My only complaint is this is a hook ending. There is a wrap up to this book’s main plot but leads in to the next book.
First let me start off with the fact that I LOVE Piper!!! Absolutely love her and I must say I may love her just a tiny bit more than Rose, I know hard to believe but it’s true. This book was amazing I loved every bit of it and did not want to put it down! It has everything from supernatural/paranormal, humor, romance, action and mystery all wrapped up in one epic storyline! Even if supernatural/Urban fantasy isn’t your thing give this book (first in the series) a try anyway you will not be sorry at all, but instead you will be turning pages and losing sleep till the very end. (Even though it is a curse keepers novel you do not have to read the curse keepers books first)
