This was a quick read not because I couldn't put it down, but because it lacked much in the way of substance. It was quite a disappointment, to be honest. I backed this project on Kickstarter ages ago (I'm terrible about letting books I back sit for years and years before reading them) because it looked really promising, and I love anthology works, especially comic-focused ones. The themes promised by the Kickstarter campaign -- tales of knighthood and the values surrounding it, featuring diverse subjects not usually centered in these kinds of stories -- were right up my alley, I thought.

The first volume of this, however, had so few comics and stories in it, and was composed primarily of single drawings or small series of them. The experience felt much more like flipping through a digital "fanzine" of artists work like you sometimes see looking for funding on Tumblr or Twitter, not what I would have expected from a Kickstarter campaign that produced incredibly high-quality books and other rewards. Really happy I only backed the digital tier, now, because reading this felt like scrolling through the #knight tag or something similar on Tumblr, to be honest.

The quality of the pieces ranged so wildly (from extremely amateurish to impressive professional art) it makes me wonder if they just took any submissions they received, with no editing or selecting of artists/works. Some real gems mixed in with a lot of filler. It didn't feel anything like the much more professional sorts of comics/art anthologies I've backed on Kickstarter before. Not the experience I was expecting, but I have since started in on the second volume and it is much more polished and full of actual short comics/stories, so perhaps there is hope yet. I don't know why they would have shoved what is potentially the majority of the "filler" content into the first volume, though, because it doesn't make a great impression. Glad I kept reading, though, because I'm enjoying the second volume more.

I was one of over 3000 backers for this and the other two books on kickstarter, and today I finally recieved my physical copies of the books, and all the gorgeous rewards. It's been a long wait, but so absolutely worth it.
