After reading few chapters of its Manhua version I searched for raws and ended up with THIS online translated novel on gravetytales.com. In the beginning, I just wanted to take a quick look. But as it happened, I ended up dropping all other activities and reading it with all my might. It is so, so engrossing and so bewitching.

Story line was not new as I followed SAO Sword Art Online Aincrad Omnibus (2-in-1 Edition) (Sword Art Online Aincrad Manga, #1-2) by Reki Kawahara and Half Prince 1/2 王子 1 (1/2 Prince, #1) by Yu Wo closely. But It is significantly different from the previous two. In terms of story and plot, it is more deep and grounded. Story and plot revolves around one character. Who was deemed as God in Game and ruled over the hearts of gamers. When he was thrown out of the Pro-team and forced to cut all ties from the game scene. He didn't gave up. He started his return from the root level. Even though he started from zero, reality of him being top tier expert wouldn't change and he started to soar high again with new friends and some old ones.

Characters
There are lots of lovable adorable and humorous and enigmatic characters to love. I personally love MC's sense of humor and other character apart from him is "HUANG SHIAOTIAN". I just come to love this character. Although I wont change over to his fanclub but he is my second most fav character from the Book. Characters are so life like and solid with detailed traits and habits. It is easy to differentiate among them even though their names are difficult to remember but surprisingly characters are outstanding.

Pacing of the book is also great otherwise repetitiveness of the fighting scenes might get boring but it doesn't. The pacing was fast and medium according to the story.

I will rec this Novel to everyone interested in action thriller. Even though I don't have a RPG or MMORPG background I still easily understood every detail so I am sure it will not be difficult to read for first timers of this genre.

This story is a bit different than the other famed litrpgs. First of all, its plot isn't too far fetched or too futuristic. Its a simple story about a MMORPG. Its believable and interesting.

I think the anime is a better vehicle for this story. The web novel is actually interesting and funny. The web novel also describes a lot of crack / exaggerated reactions that are better expressed in anime or manga / visual form like ㅠ_ㅠ tears. There are a lot of "chapters" and a lot of filler -- sometimes I like them sometimes they're a slog to get through. There's a lot more detail than the anime which can be helpful. Now I understand why Blue River was so frustrated lol. The anime is a great, streamlined adaptation but obviously the web novel is much further ahead.
I'm not sure how often The King's Avatar was / is updated but every "chapter" is ~3 pages. There are ~1700 chapters in total! I'm trying to pace myself and enjoy having so much content left lol.

Pertama membaca setelah menonton versi OVA yang keren banget.
Ternyata novelnya Game Play detail banget. Mulai dari memulai buat akun baru di server GLORY sampai menulis detail darah dan kemampuan monster. Adegan pertarungan pun dijabarkan dengan detail termasuk tingkat perhitungan setiap efek senjata. Gila!

------/////------

The King's Avatar ada berapa novel? 26?
Mabok skill game, hahaha.

Cuplikan novel pertama.

In Glory, players can do a class change at level 20. Before then, there was no class and any skills from any profession could be learned as long as there were enough skill points. This was also for the convenience of the players. After advancing to level 20 and finding an interesting class, all of the points learned before would be returned. But after changing classes, a player can only learn from his own class’s skills. He cannot become a jack of all trades.

Even though Ye Xiu had forgotten what quests to do and how to beat certain instance dungeons, his skills would never be lost. Glory was very balanced. Low-leveled skills also had their own function. Every person could assemble their own skill set however they liked. Though, the amount of skill points was limited. Under normal circumstances, 4000 skill points was nowhere near enough to max out all of the skills. 5000 points was also not enough so players needed to choose carefully.

With respect to choosing skills, Ye Xiu naturally had his own set. Although his One Autumn Leaf’s class was a Battle Mage, he himself had once been regarded as a textbook. How could he have only been able to play a single class? Inevitably, only those proficient with every class had the qualifications.

Ye Xiu almost without thinking, first went to the beginner skill tree and learned two level 5 beginner skills: Swift Run, Roll.

The beginner skill tree was something every class could learn skills from. The two skills Ye Xiu had learned were very convenient. These 10 skill points would let the character to move in two different ways.

Swift Run increased running speed. The skill had no cooldown but used up stamina. After the stamina was depleted, the player would return to normal walking speed. To recover stamina, a player had to either walk or stand still. Walking would recover it slowly, while standing still would be a bit faster.

Roll, as the name implies, lets the character execute a rolling movement. Rolling forward, rolling backwards, rolling left, rolling right, rolling slanted, rolling walking, rolling running, rolling whatever. It also had no cooldown but used up some time to complete.

Ye Xiu had mastered these two skills long ago. He also clearly knew which skills were practical to him at this stage of the game.

First was Sky Strike, a Battle Mage skill. Every class had this type of knock-up skill. Their characteristics were all the same. After attacking, the target would be knocked up. The higher the skill level, the higher they would knocked up and the greater the damage. This was a commonly used skill. Ye Xiu had originally been a Battle Mage, so he chose the Battle Mage skill Sky Strike.

After that, Dragon Tooth, another Battle Mage skill. It was a direct attack that would cause the enemy to be stunned. Ye Xiu also easily learned it because of his original class.

He then learned the Sharpshooter skill Floating Bullet, the Mechanic skill Machine Trace, the Spellblade skill Wave Splitting Sword, the Grappler skill Backdrop, the Ninja skill Shuriken, the Blade Master skill Guard, the Elementalist skill Electric Ring, and the Priest skill Heal.

These skills didn’t require a lot of points. They were all within 20 points. Lord Grim was also only level 7, so the number of upgrades he could make to skills were limited. So in the end, there were still some leftover points. Ye Xiu didn’t learn any more skills. To him, he already had enough to deal with any situation at his level.

Original review can be found on my blog at this link: https://yaguitarist.wordpress.com/201...

The reason why I started reading this light novel is due to the anime. Since this light novel is adapted into an anime and it is one of the most popular anime in spring 2017, I decided to watch the anime with no prior knowledge that a light novel exists. I’ve always love to watch anime related to games. This anime, on the other hand, is different from any other game related animes, i.e. Accel World, Log Horizon, Sword Art Online, out there. The King’s Avatar is based on the professional gaming league. This means that the technique and skills displayed by characters are top-notch. I’ve always wanted to see what a pro player is like, their knowledge, lifestyle and leadership abilities. Whenever I play a certain MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) or FPS (First Person Shooting) games, I tend to watch pro players battle it out in championships.

After watching the anime, I was raving about it to my friend when he brought up the existence of the light novels. He read the entire series and recommended me to check out the light novel since it is more descriptive as compared to the anime. Just like what he said, the light novel is much better than the anime. I was so glued to the story that I couldn’t stop reading the light novel. I chose to read the translated version, i.e. English version since I’m not really good at reading Chinese. There are some sentence structure errors since some of it is a direct translation from Chinese. However, the meaning behind the words is still present so it isn’t confusing. I totally overlook the errors and still give this light novel a 5-star rating as the storyline is so captivating and it isn’t easy to translate texts.

However, I have a feeling that readers who are not familiar towards gaming languages might have a tougher time understanding the light novel as opposed to the anime. The language used in the light novel can get very technical at times and even I have difficulties understanding some of the terms used, i.e. the skills used. On the other hand, you will be able to see the skills used in the animation and there will be explanations for the terms used in the anime, i.e. What is an MT.

I still prefer the light novel as compared to the anime as it is far more descriptive and there are some things which are present in the light novel but it isn’t covered in the anime. An example would be the anime skipped out some strategies Ye Xiu used to clear the dungeons. Instead, the anime just showed a scene of Ye Xiu and his team breaking the record.

Another unique aspect of this game, Glory, would be that it is played in 1st person point of view (pov). Most MMORPG is played in 3rd person pov and I’ve never seen one that is played in 1st person pov. I don’t know if there are any new MMORPG which is played in 1st person pov. Do enlighten me in the comments section below if you know any. I would love to give them a try. Playing in 1st person pov is really difficult for an MMORPG. Imagine all the flashy skills which include your character jumping and dashing around to hit the opponent. With all the rapid camera movement, I think I will just puke from dizziness! FPS games are the only games which I know of that is played in 1st person pov. I’m pretty bad at FPS games and I usually take on the role as a sniper in such games. It is difficult to snipe opponents while making sure no one is sneaking up behind you to knife you down. Since I will consistently be looking through the sniper scope to snipe targets down.

I love Ye Xiu’s character. He might seem like a cold-hearted person on the outside but he is actually very humble. Despite being Glory’s #1 player, he doesn’t brag about it. Moreover, he is a really good team leader. Ye Xiu not only knows his teammates really well, but he is also able to decipher the strengths and weaknesses of players he has never met before just by looking at their controls and playstyle. He is able to guide those strangers to their fullest potential by pinpointing their weakness while taking advantage of their strengths. Ye Xiu might be very straightforward most of the time since he doesn’t sugar coat his words. He criticizes players who go overboard while praising those who have done a good job. Those are the reasons why I love him so much as an MC, i.e. main character. Not to mention, he is a total badass. XD

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the light novel volumes since I love to see how Ye Xiu gather his team and make a comeback in the professional gaming league. With his leading skills and abilities, I have no doubt Ye Xiu and his team will clinch the top spot in the league.

I loved the book. I couldn't put it down.
I loved the anime. It's definitely worth a binge.
No wonder The King's Avatar is such a huge hit in China.

This is the story of a newly retired pro-gamer, Ye Xiu. He's legendary famous in the gaming world but he gets kicked out by his team because he refused to be commercialized. He is forced to give up his virtual identity, which he played with for 10 yrs and won 3 champions with. So now that he's got nothing to do, he finds a job at an internet cafe, and decides to start all over again in the game. His plan is to rest for a year and then return to the pro-gaming scene.

Most of the action happens inside the game. Ye Xiu used to play a battle mage character in his pro-career, but this time, he decides to build an unspecialized character from scratch. Being unspecialized means that he will have access to all sorts of skills from different character classes. But the problem is, he needs a weapon that is especially made for the unspecialized. In game, Ye Xiu makes friends with some talented noobs. He transacts with the different guilds in order to get the materials needed to build his self-made weapon. It was fun watching Ye Xiu outsmart the other players in game. And eventually, he'll be able to form his own team and do a comeback. It's not even a typical fallen-hero-revenge plot, which we often see in sports stories. The main character is not petty. He just loves the game so much that he wants to continue playing.

The level of detail that was put into creating this fictional gaming world is insane. The story is full of action, in-game, and it has a lot of funny scenes. I’m not a gamer, but I liked reading about the game. It’s like any other high-fantasy novel with very detailed world building and magic rules, except apply all that into a computer game that is treated as a professional sport. There are a lot of tactics involved in playing out the fight scenes, battles and wars. Put a competition in the mix and everything gets even more interesting.

There are also some bittersweet moments here and there. Part of me is kinda regretful of the glorious past that Ye Xiu had to turn his back on, while another part of me is totally cheering this new direction he's taken on. That’s why I’m emotionally invested in the story. The side characters also have interesting backstories. You get the feeling that they aren't just one-dimensional people. They’re real and complex.

It’s not without some flaws. There were a few parts that I found too dragging. Nevertheless, I feel like I have more tolerance for dragging scenes than the average person so I was able to power through to get to the many good parts.

Overall the story is simple and cliche, but it's so well-told that it will pleasantly surprise you with its uniqueness. It has a good combination of bittersweet drama, light-hearted comedy, and high-octane fight scenes.

Watch the anime trailer to get an idea of the flavor:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_co...

There is also going to be a TV series in 2019, played by real human actors. Actor Yang Yang (from Love O2O) is taking the role of the male lead, Ye Xiu.

The King's Avatar has been a book on my reading list for a long time, after reading Solo Leveling I was directed towards this book by a friend of mine. The King's Avatar has an excellent plot and is quite entertaining, however, the translation seems a little shaky. At times the English throughout the book isn't the greatest, or more accurately certain details just don't convey as well in English as they presumably do in Chinese. Ye Xiu is an engaging character, and although certain aspects of the book seem far-fetched, despite Glory being based on a real game, the overall concept behind the game is also entertaining. When I was recommended this book I was advised I may have to make a list of characters and write down various plot points as well. I will also emphasize that it is nearly mandatory to make any sense of this series. A large number of characters, alternate accounts, confusing (and similar) names, as well as the large amount of time that can go between each appearance of a character if they are not a member of the main "Happy" cast can cause immense confusion. Furthermore it may be worthwhile to make a list of the guilds, including their rank in the Glory Professional Alliance if applicable, list their members, the club that backs them, and it's specialties to help ease confusion later on. If you decide to read this series and enjoy it, I highly recommend Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God.

One of my favourite webnovels of all time. I don't know how to sum up my feelings for it. Even if from a readers perspective it's frustrating how little we know about the MC bc we basically never hear his thoughts and instead only the thoughts of the other characters. It adds to the charm bc just like the other characters you have no idea what the MC is going to do and you look forward to finding out what new plot twist is going to happen.
To be honest, at the beginning I didn't expect to like it bc a book about people playing onlin video games? Doesn't sound like my cup of tea. But I'm so glad I decided to give it a try! I've become a fan of a new genre and I always love when that happens. Bless the author for this story and giving me the opportunity to experience their writing!

It's great to read a story about gamers, both casual and professional, that is clearly written by someone who actually plays games. Seeing all the gaming terms, the nerdiness of it all, the game mechanics, it's honestly great, and really fun.

The story itself has just started, so in a way it is moving both fast (with the progression of the plot, the introduction of the game, the systems, the characters, the e-sports tournaments and world, etc) and slow (with nothing much happening that really progresses the story instead of just introducing it). It's a good balance and an easy start to the story. Hopefully things pick up a bit faster in the 2nd book, with more inyeractions and banter, as those are the most fun parts.

I'm looking forward to reading more!

Not often I enjoy the light novels as much or even more than the anime but The King's Avatar books are fantastic. I love the anime so much I've watched it several times, so I initially didn't think the books would add much more. Glad to report I was completely wrong!

The names can get a bit confusing, especially if (like me) you don't read a lot of Chinese light novels. And the translation is decent, but not great (this is not meant to be disrespectful, I know these translations are done by volunteers). The story more than makes up for it, though. Lots of action and laughs, characters I can't get enough of and a world that mixes fantasy and reality to near perfection.

Different to everything I've read before! I watched the CDrama before this, and now I'm happily starting this novel of more than 1700 chapters. Great.... !!! This world and characters are amazing!

I was surprised to see that the book mostly revolves around the game (in the Drama we had way more real life interactions between characters) , there are just a few scenes that take place in real life, but it's really interesting. It's my first time reading a chinese novel, but the author has a peculiar and funny style of writing things. The tone of the novel is funny!! And of course, all characters are interesting and different.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain how I feel about this book. It's very much YA in its scope and writing, despite the age of the protagonist (25), and I daresay that if I hadn't been a WoW junky back in the day I wouldn't have understood half of it. If you've seen the animated version, this does fill in a lot of the gaps, but if you aren't a hardcore MMO player, it's a bit hard to really feel for these characters.

Also, Chen Guo is astoundingly annoying. Oh my god.

Wow wow wow I finally understand the hype.
After winning the championship, the main character, captain of Excellent Era, gets pushed out of his profession into retirement. Not getting jaded, he gets back up and decides to take back his life by slowly building his power and bringing friends to his side.

Excluding the Deceptioning arc, everything up until the major event the whole book is leading up to is fantastic. I stopped reading the series when it devolved into just a series of tactical match descriptions between the pro-teams.

Probably one of the better game oriented titles. There's more focus on the characters and there is some variety to them. They are simple and believable and their interactions are sometimes quite funny.

Main character is overpowered but starts from scratch and meets difficulties, so do his friends, so there won't be any kowtowing or face smashing as in xianxia novels.

Writing style is good and I haven't found (translated) any plot holes or painful plot conveniences in ~800 chapters.

The game itself is fairly well explained and entertaining. A must read for people into gaming novels.

Review from Chapter 1 to Chapter 87!

Idea
I like very much the idea of game-elements since I myself like very much gaming.
It is also good because it brings to light what it takes to game, the process, the patience and the grinding.

Execution Macro
This first volume has a lot o information but at the same time, it progresses really fast (my opinion).
The author presents the MC with some basic information, which can be perceived as the tip of the iceberg. As the chapters goes on, it is presented new characters, but we can see how much it is focused on the MC and his knowledge of the game.

Execution Micro
For a first volume the depth about the presented characters is ok, it has more focus on the game elements and the MC experience.
When comparing the MC with the other characters, specially with the so called "experts" it is clear the valley that separates them.

All-in-All
I like it, very much.
I like gaming, so I can relate to the aspect of patience and grinding for levels.
It is also nice to present this part of "pro player" to those that are not at that levels (like me).
It is expected a lot more new characters and more depth to those already on stage.

I will keep reading it.

AMAZING Light Novel, especially if one is even mildly into Online Gaming.Called in sick the first day I started reading.

Amazing characters, smart yet hilarious writing; I was cracking up nearly every chapter, as well as waiting to see what ingenious, and deviously shameless, strategy the protagonist would employ next..

Anyone with think to give this novel less than 5 stars then he's/she's an idiot.

The ability Yu Xie showed during hunting the hidden BOSSES, Blood Gunner and Goblin Merchant was heaven defying one, but to be more precisely his most terrifying ability is the ability to lead a bunch of noobs to steal the Wild boss, Blood Gunner, right from the eyes of the Three Great Guilds! And that's a prove that he wasn't the leader of Excellent Era and the owner of the most powerful character in GLORY - Battle God One Autumn Leaf - for nothing

Finally this novel is outstanding and I can't wait to see how's Lord Grim is going to be in the upcoming chapters.
