Never again – Max Mannheimer swore to himself that he never wanted to return to Germany, the land of his tormenters. He had suffered everything that a person could encounter in the inferno created by the Germans: humiliation, forced exile, internment in a ghetto, death of almost his entire family in the gas chamber, concentration camp, hunger, sickness and abuse. By some miracle he survived. But then Mannheimer became acquainted with a young German who had been active in the resistance and started a family with her. For many years he never spoke about his suffering. Only when he thought he was close to death did he decide to record his experiences for posterity in this “late diary.”

Neutitschein, Repubblica di Cecoslavacchia, anni '30 del Novecento. Max e tutta la sua famiglia vivono la propria vita come molte altre famiglie, ma sentono, ormai da qualche anno, una pressione psicologica per il fatto di essere ebrei. Max si sente sempre più emarginato, a scuola, per strada. Poi arrivano gli anni '40 e la situazione incomincia a delinearsi sempre più critica e Max non capisce cosa possa essere che certe persone vengano discriminate, ma purtroppo sarà solo l'inizio. 1943 Gennaio: un giorno vengono strappati dalla loro casa, come succede ad altre centinaia di migliaia di famiglie ebree e deportate nei campi di concentramento. Qui inizia il viaggio, nell'inferno della Shoah, che cambierà totalmente la vita di Max e della sua famiglia, in una delle più tremende e crudeli guerre all'umanità...

Ogni volta che inizio a leggere un libro-testimonianza sulla Shoah o di qualsiasi altra guerra, rimango sempre spiazzato, perchè non ho mai vissuto un evento così traumatico, come può essere quello di una guerra. Quindi son lì col libro in mano e continuo a leggere sfogliando le pagine che inesorabilmente mi spiattellano in faccia la realtà degli eventi, di una crudeltà e di un fanatismo irreali ai miei occhi. Le testimonianze sono molto importanti, perchè portano all'attenzione eventi che potrebbero perdersi nel tempo e perchè in futuro non si ripetano avvenimenti di questa entità, purtroppo la storia ci dice il contrario: di guerre, soprusi, oppressioni, discriminazioni e quanto d'altro, continuano a ripetersi, anzi si stanno acuendo sempre più. Perchè?
Perchè? E' una delle domande, forse la più presente, che pongono i bambini agli adulti. Cosa si potrebbe rispondere in questo caso?

A short diary by a young man who survived many Nazi concentration camps. The book was written originally in the late 60's I believe, then published in the 80's. This is the English translated version. The writing was very cryptic to me, and thus not my favorite book on the subject. I picked this up in the bookstore at the Dachau memorial site, and the lady in the bookstore said that "everything you see here is because of Max Mannehimer." He died recently, but devoted much of his later life to improving the Dachau memorial museum, giving tours to children, etc.

Max Mannheimer shares all the grim details of his experiences simply and with utter honesty. It is not an easy read, so I have been coming back to this book on and off for the past month. While reading about the Holocaust can be unpleasant, we owe it to those who survived to tell their stories. In remembering their past, we can better see and confront our own prejudices and, hopefully, ensure tragedies like this never happen again.

Also, the translator of this work, Kathryn Woodard, is my aunt. I believe she did an outstanding job.

Libro mediocre, che si lascia leggere ma non lascia nulla di significativo. Lo stile di scrittura fa alquanto schifo e a volte risulta fastidioso per la grandissima quantità di punti e pause nelle righe.
