Well, it turns out I'm a demigoddess. The only being in the world who can save magic from being completely destroyed. Unfortunately, I don't have the sword that can unlock my true potential, which means I'm not doing any saving anytime soon.
So, when the Blood Coven extends a heartbreaking yet tempting offer--my sword in exchange for one of my hot and caring gargoyle guardians--I accept. Saying goodbye feels like a stab in the heart, but I don't have any other choice. Magic must be saved.
But when we arrive at the coven's castle to make the exchange, we soon discover that we've walked straight into a trap. And if we can't escape within the next three days, the City of Wings will fall, along with every supernatural life within it.
Carved in Stone is the second book in a new reverse harem urban fantasy full of magic, danger, and romance.
Jenna Wolfhart spends her days dreaming up stories about swoony fae kings and rugged blacksmiths. When she's not writing, she loves to do CrossFit competitions, rewatch Game of Thrones, collect Taylor Swift vinyls, and drink far too much coffee.
Jenna has always had a passion for writing, books, and publishing. Previously, she worked for an academic publisher in New York and then completed her PhD in Librarianship, focusing on young adult fiction.
Jenna now lives in England with her husband and her two dogs.
For supposedly being a demigoddess Rowena remains powerless, helpless and almost completely useless. None of her powers develop apart from strength but even that doesn't seem to really do much , she remains whiny and childish, she keeps missing out on her sword and basically just bounces from one prison to another. She's terrible at negotiating. She still has a martyr complex. And bullets bounce off her but swords don't?
Poorly executed with an annoying heroine and zero chemistry with her guardians.
This is the second book in the Protectors of Magic series. I want to tell readers up front that while this is a reverse harem book, at this point in the game there really isn’t much romance. More than in the first one but still not much. On to the book, this one is was well-written and fun just like the first one. I really like Rowena as a character, and I can’t wait to see her grow in future books. I would like her to get out in the world more and have adventures outside of the city. Out of her men, Marcus and Jasper are really growing on me. The other men who I’m not sure whether or not they will part of her love interests, I’m still not sure if I will like them; I can’t seem to get to know them well. Time will tell! I enjoyed this installment, and the end was a jolt. I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I think the fight scenes lasted way too long between Ro and Oberon. The fact she couldn't fully utilize her powers was more than a little frustrating because she could never get to her sword. I don't know if the author thought it would be exciting to be that close to getting it but failing. It wasn't at all. I stopped reading some pages because it seemed she was getting her ass kicked way too long. The sexual interaction with Marcus was not that exciting. Jasper turning to Stone at the end was disappointing because she already had a dream about it, aka a vision. Why did she kiss him? I guess it will be explained in the next book. As far as the reverse harem style of this book, it really hasn't manifested so I don't think it should be labeled as such. The author does make certain scenes interesting, but I would like to know more about the witches. What was the point of getting to know Edward and Sylvia anyway?
Oh my heart! That ending, totally just broke me. I love these gargoyles. So strong and resilient and yet Ro seems to end up saving them as much as they are saving her. We thought we were safe for a bit after the ending in book one but the hunters aren't the only people we have to be worried about. There are others out there that will do whatever it takes to get their hands on Rowena. There is much deception in this book. Some secrets are revealed. But again, that ending! I need book three now!!!!
This second book of the series is just as good as the first. A new adversary is introduced and the book is full of lots of deception and action. There is one relationship that takes a step further but another which comes to a heart breaking and jarring stop. This series really is exciting and I'm loving the route it's taking. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series as I really need to know what Rowena will do to fix the issues which need fixing. Five stars from me for pure enjoyment.
I was really pulled in by book 1 but this, while good, was not as good as the first. I expected a little more growth from Ro, she was inexperienced in book 1 but straight fire in her heart. This continuation, only being a few weeks later from where the previous ended and she is constantly doubting herself about her strength and abilities. The best was the end, she finally gained some confidence. I hope that carries through to book 3. I really want to see her grow into her own.
I'm glad I have Kindle Unlimited, because I wouldn't feel like I was getting my money's worth with this series. I think I'm in the minority in the ratings, so please read the book & decide for yourself.
To me there is just no real world building or character development. Rowena & her guardians are flat & the Queen and Tess are the only shadow witches even mentioned. There also isn't any humor woven into the story, imo.
But decide for yourself. I hate leaving negative reviews & possibly turning away readers.
The book was full with actions, full with twists, there were moments only where the characters got time to breathe in. I really liked the way Rowena grew stronger and smarter and how she stands out for her friends. Feelings were involved too, however I haven't imagined the way things turned out. I love how Jenna writes, it's great to read. I cannot wait to see what's coming up next. I reviewed an ARC copy of the book voluntarily.
I liked it, but there was a lot of death. A bit too much maybe? At least, for my liking. For me, this second book didn’t quite reach the high level of book 1. Where book 1 was very much about the slow unravelling of the big secret, which made it intriguing, this book is more about fighting. It was still very entertaining and exciting. I just didn’t like some of the things that happened.
Ah I need more! The story picked up where the last left off. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen. Filled with danger and action this book didn’t disappoint in the least. I can’t wait for the next one! I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.
Great Young Adult series. Slow with the story-line And even slower on the romance department. Coudn't find the RH part but maybe that will come in book2 ?
DNF I just cannot deal with another angst ridden plot where the romantic tension /conflict would be solved by a simple conversation. Stopped at chapter 2.
Second in the series and still as exciting as the first. Rowena tries to recover her sword and faces challenges as she and Marcus tale a trip. Rowena finds out more about her past.
I love a good plot, but the events of this book rush by too fast for any character development or believable character relationships. A good book is more than a good plot, a million things can happen to a character, but if They're so underdeveloped they feel like a stranger why exactly should the reader care what's happened to them?
