“Life is too short to be cynical. So smile, dare to believe and leave the door open for Magic.”
I live by those words. I’ve searched the world for answers to questions that only seem to lead to more questions. Imagine my surprise when I discover Magic right across the hall... wearing nothing but an apron and a smile...
I’m Laney Evans, and I believe in Magic.
“The secret ingredient is always Magic."
I’ve lived my whole life with Magic surrounded by a wacky, prank crazed, magical family. I thought I had the recipe for happiness all spelled out until I caught sight of Laney Evans, and now I know that the best is yet to come!
I’m Max Cross, and I believe in love at first sight. (I’m not a creeper, damn it.)
Very great and funny read. The chemistry between Max and Laney is "magical", pun intended! C and V put together a good book, which I hope will become a series. If you love magic, a good laugh and the supernatural, this book is just what you need. Oh, I always wear aprons when I cook.....I will never put mine on with a straight face again!
ETA: I raised my review a star because this is a mother/daughter(16) who wrote this, and due to daughters age it was admirable not to include sex. So I added star that I took away for no sexy time. If I had a daughter this is the kind of book I would want her reading until she was 25.
This was cute. I liked it, but it had no sex and I like books with some kind of intimacy. I will give Jax’s book a try.
The characters were amazing. I loved the story between Max and Laney. The were a match made in heaven and also made the absolute perfect ending.
The story-line was hilarious! A true down to earth rom-com that had me laughing out loud quite a lot. I was completely entertained by the plot of this story and it's a debut story as well. Usually, I don't find myself completely enchanted by a debut story but this one was magical and I couldn't put it down either. I also loved how the author's went back and forth between characters so that way we knew what each character's POV was in the story. I highly recommend this read!
I loved the fandom drops in this book. Anything that references World or Warcraft and Supernatural in the same chapter has my vote. I thought this book was entertaining. I have family like poor Max who would totally do some of these things to me. I commend him for still having the courage to talk to Laney despite all the awkwardness. The idea that magic is real and literally your next door neighbor is not a new concept, but Cross the Hall magic presents it in a new and fun way. Laney is the perfect girl next door to go with SNG. I was super wary when I saw it was chapter one for the girl and chapter two for the guy. It usually makes for a disjointed flow of the book, but by the fourth chapter I was on board with the flow and didn't question it for the rest of the book. Can't wait for more. I'll have to get anything else by C & V now.
All i can really say is OMG! This book is full of fun and pranks gone bad... Or great depending if what side you're on ;) I honestly will never look at Minions, Donkeys, and Potbelly Pigs the same again! I really hope there is a second book!!!
I cannot remember the last time a book made me laugh this hard. I mean, plug-your-nose-so-you-don’t-wake-your-sleeping-husband laugher! I definitely recommend this book! <3
Laney: “With the dinging of my motion detector still echoing in the air, I step out into the hallway. Sneaky. That’s what Carl was. A sneaky little man that on an almost daily basis tries to evade me. I have to admit that I like the challenge he presents, though. Six days a week we play this game, him trying to sneak past my apartment, me trying to catch him, or in some cases just slow him down enough to question him about the location of my latest packages. As I pull my door closed behind me, I look down the hall with a smile. I love my apartment. Inside and out it just feels so right here. So not city-apartment like. The huge wide hallway, lined with red and brown reclaimed brick on the walls. The thick glass skylights that let in just enough light to give the hall a feeling of being outside. Big brick planters, placed beside each apartment door, and wrought iron mailboxes with bold numbers on them. Ornate stained-glass security lights above every entry help finish the outside look and feel of the hall. When I first toured the building, I knew the second I stepped into this hallway. This was the place for me. It felt more like a Boston brownstone, or a London alley, than a third story apartment in Utah ever should.” (pp. 29-30).
This introduces us to the first of two main characters in this book. Laney Evans, a professional computer hacker, who lives across the hall from Sexy Neighbor Guy (SNG) Max Cross. This is a true modern-day romantic comedy with a magical twist: Laney believes in magic and has spent her life researching and trying to obtain answers about magic; while Max was born into a family that is magical and he grew up to be a professional magician.
I truly enjoyed the changing point of views for each chapter from Laney to Max. This mechanism allowed the reader to delve deeper into what each character was thinking/feeling while entertaining with many hilarious results.
The pace of the plot made for an easy and fast read. The world building and character development were well-rounded and the authors utilized slap-stick as well as modern rom-com tropes for the book. The quirky cast of characters were a real hoot! I found myself laughing out loud at their antics – could not help myself!
Evermore, I will not divulge ANY spoilers, Dear Reader as I wish for you to relish each story for yourself.
I gave this book five (5) stars as I Unequivocally Cherished this Fantastical Farce and I passionately counsel you, Beautiful Bookworm to buy this book.
All books in the Believers series could be read as standalones but would probably make more sense in order.
Reading order for the Believer series - Cross the Hall Magic - book 1 Holiday Magic - book 1.5 Cross the Line Magic - book 2 My Lucky Valentine and Sleeping with the Fishes - short stories Fool's Magic - book 2.5 Cross My Mind Magic - book 3 releasing late summer 2018 Mid-Summers Magic - book 3.5 releasing late summer 2018
What seemed like a typical ‘guy falls in love with a girl’ kind of story turned out to be just a bit more. Unexpectedly funny and light, my first YA comedy story I’ve read, definitely had me giggling with characters.
Story evolves around two characters, both very different but both believing in magic and supernatural. Max being a magician with a real magic powers, can WOW an audience and own them by his charming spells and funny personality, what he can’t do is approach a girl he liked from the first moment he laid his eyes on her. Laney being just little crazy, obviously parcels and books obsessed ball of energy, noticing sexy neighbour guy but never making the first step either. Until one of her precious parcels gets lost and she is forced to go knocking on neighbour’s doors. And here it starts, the wall of shyness and reserve is broken and fun really begins. Two very likable characters, fall in love in crazy speed, but who can blame them. It’s the things happening around them and just plain craziness of some situations had me in fits of laughter.
I have found this story light and enjoyable, at some parts I would probably enjoy a bit more depth of characters and at times it felt a bit rushed, but this book is YA comedy, and hilarious situations just compensated for it all.
Cross the Hall Magic, being the first book by duo C and V Guyer, is just a beginning of a great journey for them. You can see few flaws which come with the debut books but in general it worked fine. Stories written by co-writting authors don’t always have to end up well but you can tell, mother and daughter relationship definitely worked for them.
So if you enjoy YA with a bit of magic and buckets of fun, this book is absolutely for you.
Okay so i'm officially over the moon for this book. It has catchy chapter titles, references a love of books, Harry Potter and Supernatural!!!!! Told in alternating pov's of Laney and Max you will see each scene play out differently from their respective views. I really loved how in depth it was and to read their inner monologue! They are so cute together and how they both are a little dorky is just perfect. This swoon worthy read was a one click for me and the second i opened it, i did not put it down! This book was full of so many heart gushy moments, and i loved every one of them. While I did see the ending coming, I just want to point out how much i loved the 2nd author of this book included their own version of the ending... I loved both of them! Although now i'm left to wonder what did happen to her lost package? (read the book to understand). This book has now heartily ranked to my #1 spot of this year so far. I really, really need a signed copy to put on my display shelf... (yes, i have one that is just as dear and precious to me as Laney, lol). I connected to this book and to Laney on so many levels. Nothing in this book and her relationship with Max felt forced or hurried. It all flowed flawlessly and the writing was beautiful! I really, really can't wait to read whats next! Definite 5 stars from me.. (I'd give it a million if possible)
Creative, cute and catchy!! You'll love Max and Laney and the hilarity they seem to create. They're quite literally a dream couple ♡♡♡ It's just adorable watching them bumble along that rocky road of true love. Add in pesky and pain in the tush siblings and the character core is complete! One cannot forget to mention the holy terrors of piggies and cats that make the unlovable aspect but never boring surprises that their chaos ensues and you're sure to laugh out loud! I'm a tad envious I've never come across a magical apron or leather jacket.... This writing duo knows how to write!!! They perfectly executed eye brow raising scenes and snort inducing inner monologue!! I cannot count the times that I mentally smacked my head at their take on a situation. It's always a joy to get to read the point of view of each main character! I love devouring those differences in perception that make one remarkable book! I'll be sure to one click anything I come across in the future from this wonderfully witty pair ♡♡♡♡
This was a super cute first book. The character development was great and the time frame of the relationship worked so well. While Max acted love crossed, he was not really the creeper he kept thinking he might be. I’m sure my husband wouldn’t say no if I got an apron like his. The story is a pass off chapter to chapter between the two, and allows the reader to see what was happening from each person’s point of view. The reiteration of different parts of the story were well told and it didn’t feel like it was on repeat. The story has lots of sassy parts and made me laugh. This is a great light hearted story and I am looking forward to Book Two, in the series. Keep tuned as a short story of Laney and Max should be out soon. My only unanswered question: How did Max actually do it in the end? Hopefully that questions can be answered. check out the complete review on www.underthebookmark.com and look for their author q&a
I absolutely loved this book! Multiple times I was laughing to the point of tears and even pinched a nerve in my neck from one specific hard laugh! This mother daughter duo has an amazing ability to blend their writing together. I loved the funny chapter titles and easily likable characters. This book is full of situations that could easily become real world scenarios.
In this book we follow Delaney, Laney for short, and Max in alternating views. Max is a famous magician with millions of fans, Laney is a hacker with a particular grudge against the mailman. What not many people know is that Max is actually a wizard! Not much slight of hand in his shows but tons of real magic. Just watch out for Oswald and Mr Kitty...
This book is funny, i seen screenshots of it in a book group and it seemed funny so that's why I read it. This story is about a guy named Max who was looking for an apartment for his sister. While there he just happened to the Laney and her awesome ninja skills. From then he decided to leave his rich condo and moved into the apartment building so he could get closer to Laney. Laney is a hacker and Max is a magician. Max comes cross as a bit of a stalker but he isn't he jus in love. The story kind of jumps around a lot. It seems like the authors decided all the funny things they wanted in this book and worked the story about that. I did make me laugh
I went into this book with super high hopes, but the story fell flat... The plot line has great potential and definitely included cute moments...my big struggle had more to do with the dual point of view and continual retelling of scenes... I am not one that typically minds dual pov however... With this book I felt like for every 2 steps forward I would take one back...I also felt like the authors never quite found the voices of each character so I had to keep checking back to see who was in charge of the chapter...I hope that in future books the authors switch to a single pov or develop better dilliniation of the characters
So, this is not your typical romance by far, but that's why I loved it. Not only does it involve a magician that can do actual magic and a kick a** geeky girl who everyone can relate to, but the way they fall for each other is so much more in the norm than those passionate romances full of cheese. This is full of true love and hilarious moments, and I also like that the setting is not at all typical as well.
Great for para ya fans who are looking for a new authors or in this case authors to explore. A cross the hall Magic is a refreshing new twist you can easily binge read it or decided to savour it and ready it slowly. It is a humorous magical romance novel with likeable characters that have you wanting more when you reach the end.
I LOVE this book! It’s amazing! I started reading it at 4 am when I couldn’t sleep & it took everything in me not to wake my niece sleeping next to me from laughing so hard. This is the first book that it hasn’t taken me forever to finish due to a super depressive episode. C & V did an amazing job though I want some more detail to make it longer. But I still love it!
Quick and easy guilty read. Lots of outside characters begging for their own stories. Lost a star because the word “kidnapper” was misspelled so often it distracted me from the story.
4.5 while this book is good and hilarious I felt like there's some unresolved plot points like Syd's Zoo I wanted to see that, the Mr. October thing and the bloody package!!! Otherwise I can't wait for the next one
Many words to describe this...weird, peculiar, strange, wacky, funny, addictive. I wish this could have been longer. I just want to know what's in the missing package. And what's up with Mr Kitty?
4 & 1/2 stars This was a really funny lighthearted read. It had me laugh out loud a few times & snorting a few times, too. It flowed at a good clip, was hard to put down, and left me feeling good when I finished reading.
This is a cute story. It's silly, funny and overall cute and very sweet. There's a bit of a mystery which works itself out but it's not the focus. Really it's just a fun story.
I don't read many comedies, so it was refreshing to read one, especially one I enjoyed immensely. Plus, I haven't read another story like it, which made it all the more fun to read. The personalities of all the characters were diverse, and the banter enjoyable, and I found myself laughing along to it all. I couldn't put the book down. Definitely worthy of a re-read.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started, but was surprised and impressed at just how much I enjoyed it. I loved the fresh modern spin on magic but the writing is what stood out to me. I loved the alternating POVs and the authors' writing style kept the story fresh, energized and full of hilarity. I adored the characters and can't wait to meet them again in the next book.
I so much enjoyed readying this book. It was so adorkable. So sweet. So absolutely hysterical. Great book for the first book by an author. Laney and Max have some very memorable, very literal laugh out loud moments together. Some of the scenes, I have told everyone about. Even my husband remembers the apron scene. *snickers just thinking about it* I battled between a 3 and 4 star rating for this book, and would have given it a 3.5 if that was an option. In the end I finally went with a 3, because even though the character development was a 4, the overall writing was a 3. I'm confident, however, that the books will just get better as this author grows, because the talent is there - it just needs fined tuned. Anyways....read this book. You won't regret it. I'm super excited for the next one!!!
I could not put this book down once I started to read it!! It is a must read for everyone. there is many funny spots that keep you guessing whats coming next!! Great job ladies keep up the good work!!!
