Welcome! Join me, snooping into life's mysteries with fun, fiction, and food--California style!

Life is an extravaganza and so unpredictable! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University.

A GED for my husband, and many more years of education eventually landed us in academia—with Ph.D.s from the University of Michigan we took professor jobs with U of M’s longstanding football rival, The Ohio State University.

Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. In my professional career I wrote and published widely as a scholar, with more than forty manuscripts of varying lengths on my vita. I also carried out hundreds of training, consulting and speaking engagements on a number of gloriously nerdy topics.

So what on earth does a research scientist have in common with a mystery writer? As avid fans of the mystery genre will tell you at the core of any good mystery is a passionate search for the truth. Discovering the truth involves finding and assembling pieces of complex puzzles in order to solve seemingly intractable problems—scientist and sleuth are cut from the same cloth!

Still married to the same sweet guy, I live with my husband in one of the seven desert resort cities in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing mysteries I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese cats.

The Sonoran Desert is a beautiful setting to ponder life’s mysteries, by the surrounding mountains and the bountiful delights of the desert resort communities. I hope you enjoy reading the books in my three cozy mystery series: The Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Series, The Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery Series, and the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. Cheers! Anna

“Murder of the Maestro” earns 5/5 Catchy Tunes…Melodiously Fun!

It is annoying enough to be woken up by her personal assistant’s ringtone prank, but to hear the frantic ramblings of her boss on the other end distraught that his friend Dave Rollins is missing is worse. When arriving to check things out, Georgia finds the police police have arrived on scene, the house has been trashed, and a body is discovered at the bottom of the cliff…Rollins is dead! She and husband/detective uncover persons of interest popping up left and right in front of you, varying from an ex-wife and a narcissistic boss, to former lover/personal assistant, a “good” agent, and a list of possible women scorned. This one is super entertaining!

Anna Celeste Burke has once again given fans an engaging mystery with a nice sprinkling of poignant moments and humor, but newbies need not shy away even though lots of life has happened over the previous five books. There are more than enough references to background and character connections to make it easy to join in. I like the chapter titles, something most books don't do, because it is fun puzzle of sort to try to figure out the connection. Anna’s writing style is well-paced and easy-to-read with excellent descriptions of the environment and characters. However, she doesn't rely on purely the narrative; her dialogue has clever wit and illustrates well the personalities, connections, and emotions of each character. This is the sixth book in the series, though, and the characters are well developed, but for those readers who like a full journey, enjoy seeing character growth, and learning how all got here from there, I highly recommend reading from the beginning… But, no matter where you start, you will definitely be hooked on Georgia Shaw!

And there are nine easy-to-follow recipes included that one can use from first course to dessert. The fun part is she also includes some delightful “Georgia’s Tips” which add insights, background, and encouragement to even the most capable chef. This time we have a big favorite Chicken Marsala, Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Chocolate Mascarpone Brownies, White Bean Soup, Sole Meunière with clarified butter, Roasted Herbed Baby Potatoes, Sautéed Baby Vegetables, Chewy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, and another big favorite Shepherd’s Pie with a Pastry Crust. Something for every taste!

Murder of the Maestro by Anna Celeste Burke is the sixth book in the Georgie Shaw series; and in my opinion, it is the best one yet.

Ms. Burke's descriptive writing always makes me feel like I'm right there with Georgie and Jack as they investigate. After having read all of the books in this series, Georgie, Jack, and Carol all seem like old friends. There were so many twists to this story that the suspect list just kept growing during the investigation which turned out to not be all about murder. The Maestro definitely had a checkered past which left it wide open as to who would have wanted him dead. I thought I had it all figured out before the reveal but I was wrong. I loved that I was wrong because that made the reveal perfect. If you like a fast paced plot with plenty of suspects, humor and characters that are quirky and likable, then I definitely would give this one a try.

I'm on the case!

Every new release in the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series, brings feelings of excitement. Like this one, I always make sure to pre-order so that on its release day, the only thing left to do is find a soft blanket, a squishy pillow, and my snuggly kitty, BooBoo (well, and my Kindle!). Ahhh....the joys of "Me Time!" My only problem is that I'm extremely impatient. The days between pre-order and release feel like eternity, and because I'm so excited the day it finally shows up on my Kindle, I zoom through the book at lightning speed, leaving me with even more wait time, as I wonder when the next in series will be out. I promised myself that things were going to be different this time around. I wanted to take my time, absorb all the details, and enjoy the company of my friends, Georgie and Jack! Because I've been around since the beginning, it's only natural that Georgie and Jack invite me along to help solve their lastest - Murder of the Maestro, Book 6 in the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series. But, no worries if you are just joining us...it can be read as a stand-alone, too. However, if you are planning on becoming an expert case-solver, like myself (I know, I know....I haven't quite solved one yet, but I know I'll get there some day....), then I recommend that you start at the beginning of the series. I promise you will thoroughly enjoy the characters and their stories (and the Siamese cats, too, of course!). :-) Best of all, though, you will get to experience the amazing writing of Author Anna Celeste Burke. She is a master of words, storytelling, and character development. Book 6 is a perfect addition to this already-established, highly-popular cozy mystery series! I'll let you read the plot description in the other reviews on your own, but just know that this is not your typical cozy! The mature characters bring entertainment and friendship, while the engaging plotline keeps you anxiously guessing, "WHODUNIT," through to the very end (again, the ONLY reason I have yet to solve a case is because the list of suspects seemed to grow at every turn. My day, is coming, though...I feel it!). ;-)

Without hesitation, I highly recommend Murder of the Maestro: Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery #6 by Anna Celeste Burke. Lovers of cozies and fans of clean mysteries are sure to gobble it up and run back for seconds and thirds! In fact, I recommend you try each series written by this talented author. Each one has its own style and spunk, enough to keep you entertained until the next new release...IF you pace yourself (and truthfully, I'm still working on that pacing thing...practice makes perfect, though, right?!). I can't wait to hear about your favorites!

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

Murder of the Maestro is the sixth installment in Anna Celeste Burke entertaining Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series. Ms. Burke is a very talented author and her descriptive writing always makes me feel like I’m there, feeling the ocean breezes, enjoying the antics of Georgie’s fur babies, and participating in the action as the mystery unfolded. The mystery is well plotted, the characters well rounded and affable, and the book has enough suspects, twists and turns, and red herrings to make it hard to put the book down and difficult to figure out who the killer is. This is a steadily paced, clean cozy mystery featuring no gratuitous sex, violence, or adult language. Ms. Burke provides enough background information that this book can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a well-crafted cozy mystery.

Georgie Shaw’s boss, Maximillian “Max” Marley, calls her at the crack of dawn worried that his friend, Dave Rollins, has gone missing or worse. Until his recent retirement, Dave, who’s in his seventies and is a master musician and composer, was the Chief Creative Officer of Marvelous Marley World’s Music Group. Lost Hills’ police officers responded to a noise complaint and found the front door unlocked, the house in total disarray, and no sign of Dave. They thought the home might have been ransacked but since there was no blood, they wouldn’t issue an APB even though Max demanded that they did. After hearing Georgie’s side of the conversation, Detective Jack Wheeler, her new husband, immediately got on the phone with the Lost Hills/Malibu Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to see if they would tell him anything since Malibu is out of his jurisdiction. Georgie and Jack had seen Dave the night before at a gala honoring the award winning maestro’s career and retirement. Dave had seemed fine and didn’t mention ant travel plans. Max demands Georgie and Jack immediately go to Dave’s house to meet with Dave’s assistant, Pat Dolan, and the responding police officers. Jack assured Max they were heading to Dave’s house and then quietly told Georgie that a body had been found on the rocks below Dave’s Malibu Cliffs estate. Dave was divorced, with two grown children who adored him, an ex-wife who loved his money, and was known to be a womanizer. The lead investigator, Sgt. Hank Bardot, enlisted Jack and Georgie’s help in questioning persons of interest and Georgie had her competent Executive Assistant, Carol Ripley, do some snooping into the maestro’s past and other people she was interested in learning more about. Both Georgie and Jack are compulsive when it comes to gathering facts and resolving crimes and are determined to identify the maestro’s killer, no matter who it is.

Georgie Shaw cozy mystery Murder of the Maestro is actually book #6, but really #1 for me. My first Anna Celeste Burke book! While I'm not a fan of not starting a series from the beginning, it turned out ok, so let me just dive in here. This book has everything I love in a cozy mystery. First... Marvelous Marley World, it just sounds fun! It also has a smart interesting heroine, a handsome cop love interest and other likable characters. It starts with an intriguing murder mystery and Georgie and her husband Jack start investigating and the cast of characters is introduced. I liked Georgie and jack and the love they share. I love the setting, beautiful, sunny California and their house right on the Pacific. The extras I loved were the cats! Two of them, siamese!! OMG, and the cat puns were hilarious!
When Georgie's boss Max calls with terrible news, master musician and chief creative officer for Marvelous Marley World who they call The Maestro is missing. Georgie, Jack and the cats spring into action. Georgie has an in on both sides of the investigation and knows most of the players. When the news turns tragic, Georgie along with her executive assistant Carol dig deeper into Dave's past and present to see who would want him dead and why? Could it be a colleague,a scorned lover? It kept me guessing until the end. A great read! When the story is over, you get all of the recipes Georgie prepared in the book. Try the mascarpone brownies, they were delish! I'm excited to go back and start from book one and see where it all begins!

The mystery begins on the very first page....in the darkness of early morning. Georgia is awakened by a phone call from her distraught boss,Max, claiming that his best friend "the Maestro" was missing! As the daylight begins, his body is found. Max wants to find the murderer so Georgie and her detective hubby Jack are on the case. As the story progresses more suspects are coming to lite as well as their secrets. But who wanted the Maestro dead? Was it his ex-wife? His personal assistant who he needed in his life? He was a ladies man who could have any woman he wanted, and usually got what he wanted, so the list grows on. This is a well crafted mystery that I recommend to all mystery lovers.

I just finished Murder of the Maestro, a cozy Shaw mystery by Anna Celeste Burke.  I really enjoyed this book as I have all books I have read by Anna Burke.  A body is found on the beach and it is now a mystery to figure out who did it.  It moves along nicely with clues I had to go back to check out to see who did it.  I like Anna Celeste Burke style and the way she brings in other clues.  I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this series.

I read the print edition of this book and I love the way Anna Celeste writes her mysteries. They draw you in right at the beginning and you don't know who has "done it" till almost the end. This book also includes some really good recipes at the end. Anna hit a home run with this .

The Dynamic Duo Does It Again!

Of course, Georgie Shaw and her husband Jack could not do it without Anna Celeste Burke! Once again, Anna has brought the Marvelous Marley World crew together, to give her readers another 5 star cozy! I'm this Georgie Shaw Mystery, we have music, a Maestro, and a murder. Again, Max, the owner of Marvelous Marley World, call in Georgie and Jack to help with solving the murder of Dave Rollins, the man behind the music of the theme parks many beloved attractions and characters! The Maestro was loved dearly to those who worked closely with him, but as it turns out, many women! Georgie and Jack have to dive deep into his life not only to help solve his murder, but to find out what type of person he truly was. Let's face it, the Maestro was a ladies man, but he once lived a shady and dangerous life! With that being said, they now have their hands full with quite a colorful cast of characters! Anyone of whom could have motive to see this man dead! The husband and wife duo need to investigate everyone from his personal assistant to his granddaughter, but never lose faith in these two! They dig deep into each suspect, and any cause they may have to want Dave Rollins dead. Well, leave it to Georgie and Jack to solve the case while combing through a tangled web of deceit.

I have to say that I have been reading The Murder of the Maestro, along with the other books in the Georgie Shaw Mysteries, beginning with the first book, and I have to admit that each book can be read as a stand alone or as part of the series. I wanted to get to know each character and the their stories so I know what to expect, but it is not necessary. Anna Celeste Burke covers all of these bases in each of her books, and with each one I read, I discover something new, and I am then wished away to Marvelous Marley World! It is another wonderful read, written by a very talented and fun author! But don't just take my word for it! Get on the Georgie Shaw train today!

Now I leave you with a quote from Georgie, "Where words fail, music speaks." I

“Ah! I love this job!” Carol exclaimed. “You can ‘always expect the unexpected at Marvelous Marley World,’ can’t you?” she added in a sing-song voice, using one of Max’s favorite taglines for ads promoting his whacky world. “

In this, the sixth book in the series, the unexpected occurs when the music maestro of Marvelous Marley World is found dead on a private beach behind his house the night he retired. And with his death a convoluted tangle of secrets and scandals are found when Georgie Shaw and her husband, Detective Jack Wheeler, start delving into Dave Rollins past. And they find much more than Dave’s proclivity for romance and treble clefs as the story unfolds like an origami box. But leave it to Georgie and her cohorts (including Miles and Ella the Siamese) to solve the mystery and salvage what’s good out of a very big mess.

I am a very big fan of Anna Celeste Burke’s books having read most of them and when I was offered a chance to read an advance copy (as part of Anna’s Angels), I agreed to voluntarily review it. Georgie Shaw’s character continues to develop in ways I’d never guessed and I just love her and “the gang”. I can hardly wait for the seventh book and highly recommend the entire series.5/5

Georgie Shaw and her husband, Detective Jack Wheeler, are drawn into another investigation, when Georgie Shaw’s boss, Maximillian “Max” Marley, wants to know what happened to his friend, Dave Rollins, the man known as, The Maestro, who’d gone missing. What they find is the Maestro’s dead body on the rocks near his Malibu home.

This time the couple joins forces with the Lost Hills/Malibu Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to look for answers. They discover that the maestro was a womanizer of the worst kind, and had a secret past. Besides all the disgruntled women in his life, the suspect list keeps growing. Women and Mozart, art and money, appear to be the recurring themes in his life story.

Had his indiscretions finally caught up with him? Was his a murder of passion, or revenge for a scandal from his past, or was there an entirely different motive?
The many twists and turns will keep you guessing about who murdered the maestro in this delightful cozy mystery. All this mystery, plus Georgie’s adorable cats, and the wonderful recipes at the end of the book, what more could a reader ask?

Ms Burke’s tales are always entertaining and full of colorful characters and this one doesn’t disappoint. Right from the start, she takes us on a wild ride as the book opens with our favorite sleuthing couple, Georgie Shaw and Detective Jack Wheeler, being awakened with a predawn call from her boss who bemoans the fact that his close friend and business associate is missing. He asks Georgie to look into it, since it reflects on the Marvelous Marley World. Dave Rollins, the Maestro, who had just celebrated his retirement the night before, had indeed vanished and someone had left his home in a mess. While investigating the area the next morning, the police found the remains of the Maestro, who had been slammed on the back of the head and then had fallen or been pushed off the cliff and down to the beach below. Why would someone want to kill the Maestro? And why does his assistant pretend not to know how to contact his family and friends? Who stands to gain from his death? His ex wife? His kids? His old Jazz partners? This is the 6th Georgie Shaw mystery and it’s every bit as fun as the first 5!

WOW!! There are so many suspects, twists, and turns in the newest Georgie Shaw Mystery, I couldn't read fast enough. Just when I thought I had an aspect figured out, new clues emerged. I suspected everybody's actions, motives, and alibis. Then, when all the mysteries are solved, I was surprised and pleased by how convoluted and involved it all turned out to be.

Once again, Anna Celeste Burke has written an excellent story centered around Georgie and Jack (and Miles and Ella). Marvelous Marley World was a secondary character this time but that didn't detract from the story. I enjoyed Carol having a bigger role. What would Georgie do without her?

I missed Max not having a starring role. He always brings...well... you just have to read the series to appreciate all that Max brings to the series. He is too complicated and bigger-than-life to easily explain.

Murder of the Maestro is another awesome book in the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. While each book can be read as a standalone, they are better if read in order. I urge you to read the entire series.

There are a lot of people who would not mind seeing Dave Rollins disappear. He really was a womanizer. Fortunately for him he was also the Maestro and friend of Mad Max. Even with his checkered past (which very few knew about) and present-his ability to write and play music was extraordinary! So who would want him dead? Mad Max was beside himself when Dave went missing the day after his retirement party and called on Georgie Shaw and her new husband Detective Jack Wheeler to figure it out--STAT.

They found him alright--dead, lying on the rocks below his mansion--his house vandalized and trashed!! It took a lot of interviewing and searching to finally get to the bottom of this one. You will be surprised at who did it and why. There were a lot of twists and turns which will throw you for a loop!

I loved this book. Celeste Burke has done it again. She’s produced another magical book. I haven’t read all of Celeste Burke’s books, yet, but that’s only because I enjoy her books so much, I take my time reading them. I need to make sure I enjoy, and take in, every single word in each story.

Dave Rollins, or the Maestro as he’s known, is missing. Now, the fact he’s missing, is a very unusual event in itself but, since he wasn’t answering phone calls, and very loud music is coming from the house, was of even more concern. When his neighbours got tired of the noise the police were called, and they found the house had been ransacked. Now, being a very popular fellow, all his friends and neighbours are concerned, so several came to investigate. Well, an investigation is definitely going to have to be done, and done right now, without delay. This is certainly the beginning of a fascinating story, one which Anna Celeste Burke will keep you engrossed in.

So set aside some serious reading time, amd pull up an oh so comfy chair, and enjoy!

Who murdered the maestro? Could it be someone jealous of his success? Maybe it was due to all his womanizing? Could it be his ex spouse and children? Or could it be someone from his past, a past no one really knew about until after he was dead? It’s up to Jack and his amateur sleuthing wife Georgie to figure out.

The story takes twists and turns that has you believing one persons guilt and then you switch to believing it was someone else. It will keep you guessing until the very end to figure what happened and all that occurred.

I absolutely loved this book. Anna Celeste Burke has written characters that you can’t help but like, especially Jack and Georgie and then there are characters you just feel have to be guilty of something. Definitely a must read! A truly enjoyable story.

Phone ringing in the early am.....Miles and Ella waiting to pounce and Miles echoing his distress...by the way these are the wonderful Siamese cats who are part of the family. Phone call from Marvelous Marley World..it had to be Max, the founder of Marvelous Marley World. Dave Rollins, the Maestro is missing. Then later found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Okay, at this point I am in for the whole ride. I do not stop reading until the end of the book. I have only read 1 other series of books that I was so captured by the writing and the developing of characters in a cozy. Now it becomes a murder and the suspects start to accumulate and you are now in like of some and doubt of others. All this while a love story is being told about Georgie and Jack. jack is the detective on the case, and Georgie is his wife and sidekick during the case. The music you will actually hear in your head as you read, the reference to Nick and Nora, my favorite couple in my old movie mysteries just brought me into the read. I must end this or I will tell the story without being asked. I love this story so much I have put on hold all of the previous books that I have not read on hold. Here I come Jack and Georgie. Praise to Ms. Burke

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

I have read every book this author has written and her release days are like Christmas to me. I love Georgie and Jack and the progression there relationship has gone through this series. I especially love the fact they are a little older and wiser. The cat factory would be such a fun place to work and I have always wanted to be a detective. This mystery was another page turner which I read in one session as I just had to know who had done it and why. There are several answers to this mystery and I did not figure it out.

MURDER OF THE MAESTRO ANNA CELESTE BURKE
Dave Rollins had a way with women, but some women just didn’t like his ways! Is this the reason he was killed? Read murder and the maestro to find out! I loved the witty repartee of Jack and Georgie and this book was no different. The author has woven a story that could have been right out of a film noir atmosphere. I give murder of the maestro 5 shining violins for fabulous story writing. This whodunit with recipes gets my vote.

Murder of the Maestro is a must read book! When a good friend of her boss goes missing and is then found murdered Georgie and her dectective husband plunge head first into the mystery. With each page the list of suspects grows as secrets from the past emerge. Was it someone from the murder victims past, a scorned lover, or was it just plain greed? Very well written mystery that will have you turning the pages trying to figure it out. I highly recommend this book!

Georgie gets a call from Max because something has happened to Dave Rollins (Daniel Devereaux) is missing. He is dead. I love all the different ways the characters are woven into the story. You are fed information as it is discovered and the way it is convoluted so that you can’t figure out who did it. It’s great when you can’t figure out who did it. I’ve read books where I’ve figured out who did it before getting to the midway point of the book. Great story. ARC Reader
