Writing style is still pretty clumsy, though the overall story is entertaining enough.

Much of this volume is focused on the tournament between the Eastern and Northern dormitories. As per usual, it’s not really the best idea for an author to get too descriptive with fight scenes, as it often reveals loopholes. For example…first, how does Queen (this was a bad choice of name, IMO) have such incredibly poor stamina if he’s been training all his life with an expert. In a way it reminded me a little of Rurouni Kenshin, whose small stature could not sustain the “god-like” speed of his fighting style and it eventually overstrained his body. I feel that if that’s his problem, Queen should be a little more analytical in the beginning of his fight, so as not to waste his energy as he ended up doing. However….how was Persil able to form data on Queen’s techniques, attack pattern, and overall ability? Yes, he studied him, BUT if Queen pretty much always defeats his opponents in a flash, there’s nothing to study beyond that opening attack.

Regarding the rivalry between the two dormitories, it’s pretty silly. The reason behind it, and the resolution were just ridiculous and didn’t add much to the story. I also find it weird that the two groups are separated as much as they are. Dormitories are where students sleep. It would make more sense for them to be in regular classes together, even if they are divided for their knight training for whatever reason.

Fie is oblivious and naive in weird ways. Like her complete insensitivity toward Queen and the activities she interrupted, and her ridiculous reasoning for sneaking into his room in the first place. I also am baffled how she doesn’t remember who taught her how to write…I do not like her relationship with Queen a lot - she specifically thinks of him as a friend, then it sort of confuses things and describes it as she “fell for him” but at the same time it’s caring for a friend…? It’s fine to try things out, but she didn’t explain to him that that’s what this is, just said “yes” to his confession. It doesn’t feel like their relationship is destined to last, the way it’s going so far. I am curious how poor Cain feels about this situation, as he undoubtedly witnessed it all as he watches over Fie. I am also curious about the king’s relationship with Fielle - they keep saying it was love at first sight, but that doesn’t seem to fit the situation…

More like a collection of short stories

The book reads more like a series of linked short stories than a novel. Each was enjoyable so I've only dinged it one star. Additionally it was more slice of life than something that furthered a plotline. Overall I enjoyed the book but couldn't help being a bit disappointed after reading the first. I hope the next novel picks up the storyline from the first.

It felt like all the characters were side characters, somehow. I wanted a proper story. (And ‘Queen’ is an unfortunate choice of name for what’s becoming an important character. I always picture him as Freddie, from Cromartie, which rather stops me taking him seriously.)

Awesome book!!

The story is amazing and keeps me laughing. This volume did touch on the knowledge portion of being a knight and got to introduce more squirts and their fighting abilities. Over all the series is funny and I love how it is advancing!

Enjoyable

The first part felt more like side stories, even so they were still enjoyable, and for the second part of the book it was such a tender and funny turn of events, it left me wanting to know more!

Second path

I really want to know if she is really married to the king. I really would like to know if her sister care about her, also when and if Cain going to ever tell the king. So many questions so waiting on the next one.

Poor Queen...no one should have that experience. On the plus side, yay romantic subplot! This really does feel like Tamora Pierce Lite, and I definitely recommend it for her fans.
