Sheriff Hayden Duke was born on the starship Pilgrim, like his father, and his father before him.

He expects to die any second.

He's already been attacked by demonic aliens, rogue soldiers, and even the people he thought were his friends.

He's survived.

Barely.

Outcast. Forsaken. He's entered a strange new world. A world he knows nothing about. A world he's never stepped foot on before. A world where hope has been buried beneath the claws of monsters and the boots of a tyrant.

They took his wife. He has to find her. He has to survive. Another second. Another breath. He can never give up. He can never rest until she's back in his arms.

They'll try to stop him. They'll try to break him.  Of course, they'll try.

It won't be as easy as they think. A new hope is rising in an old world.

There's a new Sheriff in town.

Awesome!

Truly different from the run of the mill space opera and an amazing creative story where everything meshes and is plausible. Especially the plot and the tech. I find it extremely irritating when writers throw out tech jargon that isn’t correct or shows they don’t have a clue as to the underlying technology. Mr. forbes does none of that. Anyway, I found this series to be the most exiting and refreshing series I’ve read recently right up there with Expanse. Please give us more!

Loved It

The second book continued right where the first book ended. Hayden is determined to find his wife. His sense of honor and justice draws others to him. The Earth he sees is a sad and barbaric place. The honor he displays in his actions shows what a great leader this character can become. The mystery of the creatures deepen and the ending wow! No spoilers but I can hardly wait for book 3 where the characters and the readers will gert some answers and Hayden will continue to fight to protect the innocent and those he cares for. I think he may have help...great job M.R. Forbes, I cou isn't put it down!

On my last review I described “Forgotten” as containing bits of Alien, Pandorum, Doom and Passengers. Forbes followed the same strategy in Forsaken, which can be described as ‘Fallout meets Mad Max and Escape from L.A’, Sheriff Duke becoming a badass mix between a Clint Eastwood character and Snake Plissken. I also liked the fact of experiencing part of the story from another character’s point of view, with both perspectives then converging in a sort of Pulp Fiction style, something also very often seen in video games.
I also really liked the way in which the cities visited by the characters are subtly described to let the reader discover what city it used to be in ‘more civilized times’.

As I also stated in my “Forgotten” review, Hayden is extremely overkill and incredibly lucky for someone who knows nothing of a world he just started to discover. The plot kept reminding me of Fallout 4, with the main character killing and surviving anything crossing their path, despite having spent 200 years frozen and waking in a world he knows nothing about... And this is not a complaint! I love post-apocalyptic stories where the main character is always capable to endure and survive all the madness around them... and one can clearly see there’s still lots of madness awaiting for Sheriff Duke and his crew.

“As long as there’s one person out there who wants to do violence and can get others to join them, there can never be true peace. You have to become the biggest and baddest.”

Book one was a five star book. This is not that.

Let me be clear. M.R. Forbes can write very good fight scenes. They're packed full of explosions. So that was not the weakness of this book.

In book one, Sheriff Hayden, the main character of the series, was on a spaceship. Somebody is murdered. Some weird secrets are revealed, and it gets weirder. The intrigue goes deeper. It was a mysterious and fun read. Then there was a plot twist at the end that completely changed the genre of the book from a space colony series, to a post-apocalyptic Earth fiction.

I don't really like post-apocalyptic series. I don't usually like series that limit themselves to Earth, because you can't go far with that. However, since book one's story and action hooked me, I was willing to keep reading. The story wasn't boring, and there wasn't a lot of exposition. I was okay with the genre plot twist because books don't need to stick to one genre.

However, this book failed when the author tried to tell the story from the point of view of Natalia, the main character's wife, who was captured, as well as Hayden, the protagonist of book one.

Natalia's story added little to the plot, in my opinion. While both characters feel developed well enough for my liking, I would have liked to read the story from Hayden's perspective, as he wandered the wasteland looking for his wife. I didn't need to know about the mind games between Natalia and Ghost, and the Scrappers' lifestyles. I knew they were nasty, and that was good enough for me.

I wasn't very interested in reading about her experience with Ghost either. Perhaps it's because Natalia lacks character agency. She's not in control of her fate. Though that's part of the whole story, and she does try to manipulate the bad guy, it didn't impact me in any way. I felt the pacing of the story was half as fast as it could have been, and it took me nearly a year to read 80% of the book.

I wish I could keep reading the book. I really do want to read Hayden's experiences.

But I can't read any more of the story from Natalia's perspective. I really would like to read the series in this same universe where they finally do go out on the colony ship, but am reluctant to do so because I don't want to be let down with the additional perspective of another character, and reading the series in the future will be a little confusing in regard to knowing what the story is so far.

I actually listened to the audiobook of The Forgotten: The Complete Trilogy. But because I wanted my book count to be accurate and for reviewing purposes, I'll be reviewing them individually.

---------

The choices people make delve into complete nonsense

Book two starts off exactly where book one leaves off: Hayden Duke has made it off the ship, injured, and searching for his kidnapped wife. Overall, this book is solidly meh. If this book was my first hero MC shoot-em-up book, I probably would have liked it more. But honestly Martha Wells did it way better with the Murderbot Diaries series. M. R. Forbes is missing the connection with the characters which makes their deaths seem stupid and annoying.

The overall premise of this book finds Hayden searching desperately for his wife, who he learns was taken by a man named Ghost. Ghost is a prominent leader of the Scrappers and works directly for the Kingpin....literally named King.

This book is good in the sense that we are introduced to Jason and Casey: the former a borger who lost his father to the scrappers and wants to help Hayden find his wife, the latter a driver/courier who ran away from her problems in Car City. These characters are actually surprisingly interesting but Jason....for someone who is considered a genius borger.....he really made the dumbest choices. Why would he opt to do a literally old west style duel with a man who is renowned for his shot?! And fast forward, Hayden....who is apparently the best shot in the world somehow was able to best him. Pure insanity.

We start to get perspectives from Natalia's POV and for someone so smart, she's dumb as hell for some of the choices she makes. Natalia wasn't an interesting character to say the least. Outside of being an engineer and wanting to find her husband, she was the cliche damsel in distress. Lame.

I really enjoy Casey's character though I am counting down the seconds to how she dies. Because if this author is anything, it's predictable. Haydens's crew doesn't last very long.

Not Stingy on the Fun or Depth!

M.R. Forbes’ books are a real treat to read. They remind me of when I was little and wanted to read comic books for the thrills only. I never wanted to read anything deep and thought provoking. But invariably.... I would be exposed to deep, thought provoking themes without realizing it. The thrill factor distracted me! The same holds true with this series. It flows well. The writing is fast paced. But it isn’t fluff. It is thought provoking and at times quite deep. But it isn’t depth with a story wrapped around it. It’s a great story with depth in it. Subtle difference.

I’ve read many an author who set out to make some intellectual point. Their opinion was paramount and the story was just a vehicle for that opinion. Not so here.
What I like about the main character, Hayden, in this series is his sense of nobility. He’s the complete opposite of what humanity is currently in his world yet his nobility and self-sacrificial attitude wins hearts and minds. The supporting characters are convinced that even if it costs them their lives that it’s worth it. Hayden proves that to them. That’s a deep lesson that we don’t get too much of nowadays.

Had some really good insights with his alien sharing his mind/body, now I will be taking a gap from this series for now all because....
He introduced a new character, a talking cat, and not just a talking cat, the cat is also an assassin sounds VERY close to Puss in boots! Even the conversation/spoken words came across as a little too close to Puss. Then the author has a fight scene & I got a song stuck in my head even now 10 hours after I have finished the book Kung foo fighting! Imagine this song in your head early hours of the morning!!!!! All because of the new cat character.
If it was poorly written I wouldn't carry on, I am sure I will be back to this series but I need a break, I cannot cope with another earworm stuck in my head when puss in boots returns in book 3!

Eastwood vs Aliens

Not really but close enough. Hayden is one badass Sheriff and Ghost is in for a fight.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thoroughly enjoying this romp. Forbes keeps the action up and has a way of throwing together some very interesting villains, whether they are human or aliens.

This is definitely not a deep and thoughtful treatise on human frailty or future morality but Forbes HAS created a fun read!

Enough said and looking for the next installment.

Ps. I could really see this as a great comic book series if illustrated like the book’s jackets are illustrated. It would be classic.

Fallout Vault meets Pandorum meets Mad Max meets Zergling

Apparently the author decided to change the story in the second book which leads to a lot of unnecessary and rather stupid contradictions regarding the back story which make a lot of the acts of the original crew seem utterly moronic.

The MC stays an unbelievable incincible killing machine who kills his enemies by the hundreds. The world building is when you compare the story to Mad Max or Fallout rather subpar and bland. The same goes for the zergling-like threat. The master plans of the other factions are really moronic. All in all the story is rather weak unfortunately.

8/10: Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created.

“When a god comes to walk the Earth with you, the wise man follows wherever he leads .”

It did take a little to fall back into this world, but that was because I’d left it a while since reading book one. Eventually, I was back on board with the Sheriff and enjoying some of the reveals regarding the trife and goliaths.

And despising Ghost. (A villain well done).

Looking forward to the next and last in this original series, before I head back into the spin-offs.

I'm halfway through the 2nd book and here's some examples of non-sense as spoiler free as possible

1) Dude says there's no law around here and there hasn't been for centuries, then takes lawman to a place with guards and laws that dude's been going to for his whole life

2) A person threatens lawman "take me to your base or else", but lawman was unconscious and shouldn't have any way to know how to get back to his base anyway.

The main character is so unlikable it's hard to care what happens.

This is one suspense filled book after another. Excellent reading!

Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down. Thank God I'm retired so I didn't have a schedule to meet! What more can I say?..............................................,...................

Even Better Than The First Book!

This series is really good. It started a little slow but has really gained momentum. The characters are very good, and you can't help but root for the good guys! This is good science fiction at its best. Recommend this for anyone that likes an exciting story with many twists and turns. I currently live in 'Ports' and it was fun to have that come up as one of the destinations. On to the finale!

This is the second book in a trilogy which expands very well on the first one. What initially started off as a sci fi type book has turned into a post apocalyptic survival story.

I don't want to write anything related to the story to spoil it for anyone but it expands out onto a familiar, yet different earth.

Excellent addition to the forgotten universe and I cannot wait to get straight onto the third book!

Good story with moderate plot twists. Fast moving, seems to me it could use a little final editing, but I read it pretty fast. Definitely interesting and gripping enough to keep me reading. Sped through first two books, will definitely read next in series. I'd call this light escape reading, worth it as a low priced kindle book. Not real deep, but the overall imaginative setting was it's main strength.

Like the first book in the series, I found the plot interesting and I cared about the characters. The problem is that the gratuitous use of sexual violence as a cheap way to build tension that started at the end of the last book continues here and begins to overtake the entire plot. Again, nothing is truly graphic (well, the gore is a bit), but it's just hard to read and it feels lazy and exploitative.

Interesting New Series

I have never read any of this author's books up until this series. I couldn't put the first one or this one down until I was finished. Be prepared for some serious binge reading. I have to say I am thoroughly impressed and am going to check out some of the other books written by M.R. Forbes.

Action packed and thrilling series

I’m not usually into Sci-fi books but this series drew me in. I read all 3 of The Forgotten books over the weekend. The author created a unique story line that kept me captivated. It was action packed and had many thrilling surprises and characters. I will definitely read more by this author.

WOW!

What a story!! This book keeps me on the edge of my seat! Not a huge fan of fight scenes so I skim parts of that as they can drawn out at times, my only complaint! I find myself yelling out loud, and saying you've got to be kidding me on multiple occasions! This series would make a great movie! Can't wait to see what happens next!

First book was Die Hard in a spaceship. Second is Mad Max

It has some down moments were I was about to let it go. But I got hooked again at the last 1/3 of the book. Always love how Forbes makes the words flow, looks easy to accomplish but its not. Im going to start book 3 right ahead.

Good storyline with lots of imagination used to create the background story, although I do wonder that after 400years would there really be cars still lying around and able to be started and driven, this aside I am hooked enough to go straight onto book 3 to see what happens to the characters and the world.

The Forgotten Book2

This author has an amazing imagination, but along with that ,he also has a wonderful set of morals and ethics! Love counts! Hope counts. A solid sense of fairness also reveals itself in the star's actions. Writing style could improve if the writer would quit using so many words ending in "ing".

Good Series

I am continuing reading the series involving Hayden Duke, the Sheriff, am I am still being amazed at the complicity, drama, romance, and down right action that the author has managed to squeeze into the pages of this story. Pick up the first book in the series and you will not be disappointed

Fast paced

Determination of the sheriff is almost unbelievable but sweet. The horror & pain humans inflict other humans is sad,gut wrenching and painful to think about. As much as I hope humanity wouldn’t sink that low, more than likely, a lot would. There are lots of amazing fighters in this author’s world. Exciting read

I'm new to the world of science fiction, but this series hooked me from the first page. A lot of action, intriguing storyline, believable characters, story twists left and right. I couldn't put my kindle down- I had to know what happens. I can't wait for book 3.
