Is it raining? Are you camping but forgot your tent? Do you need more bedding? All you need is one or more government ponchos, an article apparently so ubiquitous at the time that the author had no need to explain it. And that's what the whole book is like to the modern reader, really: trying to guess at all the things Henderson assumes are commonplace and being amazed at all the things that are normal to him in 1882.
