Alternative Futures #1

Nightmare Hunter; The Cursed

Rate this book

She has a secret...
An ability...
A curse...
And if anyone found out - it could cost her everything!

Erin just wants a normal life. She doesn't want to be the daughter of one of the most influential men in the known universe. Nor does she want the nightmarish power that eats at her night and day!

So what does she want?

It's simple really... she wants a kick-ass job and to feel just a little normal. Easy right?

Graduating at the top of The Academy can give her everything she wants, but she has to stay focused. She doesn't have time for the half-human man who makes her heart sputter. Even if he intrigues her. And even if for the first time when things get rough, she's surprised to find she's not facing the threat alone.

But can Erin really handle her dangerous responsibilities, an overprotective alpha male, her assignments at the academy, and a deadly plot she never imagined? Or will she fail in more ways than one?

Nightmare Hunter
is a full-length steamy paranormal, sci-fi romance. This means there are plenty of smoking hot sex scenes, a sassy heroine, and a plot that will keep you guessing. It takes place in a world where handsome non-humans are just part of the world.

Okay Read

This was an alright read. This is the first book of the Alternate Future series. In this book, we meet Erin, a girl who wants to live a normal life away from her father, and she enters the StarFire Academy to achieve her dreams. I thought the story was good. I did feel like with more development, the story could have been more engaging and interesting. The characters were good characters. I did find Erin a bit naive, but I did see potential in her character. I did like Caleb a bit more than Erin. He was also another good character. I found him protective, and dominant. He saved Erin a lot. I thought the ending was okay. I need to know what happens. I will probably continue the series to see what happens. Overall, an okay read.

Enjoyable story and I will read the next one. More plot development would’ve helped.

This was an enjoyable story about a space academy and unique individuals that strive to be more and have dreams.

The story would’ve benefited greatly with about 50 pages of more character and plot development.

We can keep all the hot sexy scenes in, but a little more plot would’ve been nice. Great characters just needed a little more time to shine.

I did buy the sequel and am reading it now.

I downloaded Nightmare Hunter: The Cursed as a free ebook from Amazon. Color me surprised! I put this off for a few weeks as I wasn't sure about the blurb, but the story was fresh and interesting-- the characters well done, and the worldbuilding simple, yet clear. Ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, but it was still a good length, so I don't feel cheated, just anxious to read on. Good job-- I'll be purchasing the next book of the series right away.

This is a great start to a brand new series by Lacey Carter Andersen (an author whose previous books I've enjoyed) and Averi Hope (a new to me author)
It's got a headstrong and sassy heroine, Erin, who has big dreams that she wants to achieve on her own, not because of whose daughter she is. The hero/love interest is an interesting character, I really enjoyed the way his, Caleb, relationship with Erin is built and developed in this book. There's also some good world building and interesting background going on with this story. I particularly liked the living ships and found it reminded me slightly of The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey, just a slight resemblance but it made me think of that book whilst reading this one.
I'm looking forward to reading book two and hope I won't have to wait too long, the ending of this book did have me turning the page thinking there was more. Hopefully it won't be too long to wait for me and in the meantime I do recommend giving this book a read.

Lacey Carter Andersen and Averi Hope weave a world of suspense, mystery, romance, action, twists and turns, and even many emotions in an alternate world in their book Nightmare Hunter. This was a different side of Lacey Carter Andersen's writing side that I had not yet read/seen prior to reading this book, but I enjoyed reading the beginning of Erin and Caleb's story and look forward to seeing what new adventures wait for the couple in book two. I started out a little slow in the beginning of the book (mainly due to the fact that I haven't read many space or alternate world type of books) but found myself drawn into the story fairly quickly after the first couple of chapters and before I knew it I was at the end of the book. I really did like Erin's personality and sense of humor throughout the book and anticipate both will only grow on me more as the series continues.

Short

And more drama than danger of history or anything. Just a lot of drama. . . And sex. . .

Nightmare Hunter by Lacey Carter Andersen and Averi Hope is book one in their Alternative Futures series. In this book, we are introduced to Erin Stowe, daughter of the admired Fleet Admiral Stowe. Erin and her father have arrived at the StarFire Academy where Erin will be pursuing her dream to one day command a level 10 ship. She wishes to allow her father to let her go on her own into the academy without him; because she feels his presence will cause others to treat her differently. Being the daughter of the Fleet Admiral is all well and good, but it also tends to paint a target on your back. Whether it is with fellow students, who’d love to take you down, or whether it’s the enemy who would love nothing more than to abduct her to cause her family pain and humiliation. Determined to prove herself, and live the way that she wants to at the Academy, Erin enters on her own and under a different name. But before she can even get inside a certain male catches her attention. His masculinity and body immediately draw her attention. She feels a drawn to him, but she tells herself to resist and to just find another male to have some fun with and forget. Thing is, the male, Caleb, feels the attraction to Erin as well and he is determined to have her. Caleb is warned by his father to use the females there as he pleases, but not to mate and bond with one of the humans. After a few weeks at the Academy Erin is contacted by her father to do a dangerous mission. She is tasked with infiltrating the dreams of a dangerous man to learn about the disappearances of some young women. The danger is multiplied over with the fact that she has to do it that night, she has not had enough time to learn what she must, and her life is in danger there at the Academy.
Nightmare Hunter is an engaging science fiction novel that gives us a good variety of characters. The story focuses mostly on Erin and Caleb flipping back and forth between them. Early on in the story, we see that the threat against Erin because of who she is is all too real. Someone is after her and they are intent on getting her by any means necessary. The authors give us some light background on some history between the humans and the, Keltair, aliens who they once were at war with. Erin is a strong character who knows how to handle herself. Caleb is half Keltair and half human. Based on his heritage he is viewed to be too weak to be one of them and in his younger years was targeted by many of his kind. Now, at the Academy, he is looked down on by some because of his half alien heritage and we get to see firsthand the prejudice he must endure. Erin was raised being able to benefit from the authority and power of her father. Now she wants to move beyond that and show that she can stand on her own.
While I enjoyed this book a lot, there are a couple things that I had a bit of an issue with. Erin so badly wants to move from being beneath her father’s name but the minute that a bad situation arises she has no problem name dropping at every turn to get her way. It seems counterproductive to what one of her ultimate goals is. Secondly, I feel that the authors fail to tie in the title of this story into the actual story itself. Erin only goes into two people’s dreams, and only one truly becomes a nightmare that she has to be helped out of. So I was disappointed that the title doesn’t fit the story like I had hoped. When I read the title “Nightmare Hunter” I thought we would be following along as Erin pursued her dream of becoming a level 10 ship, and delving into the dreams of others fighting.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this story. There are a couple predictable elements to this story, but it doesn’t detract from my overall enjoyment. It is interesting to read about the evolving relationship between Erin and Caleb, and how quickly it happens. We see the changes and differences before they themselves notice. For those who don’t like cliffhanger novels, this book does have a cliffhanger ending, leaving you to wonder what will happen next. This cliffhanger is not a major one of where there is an intense situation going on, and then the story cuts off. Overall, I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. Those who enjoy science fiction alien romance novels then I think that they will enjoy this book. There are sexual situations, and some steamy scenes but none are extremely graphic. If you like steamy, romance, and danger then this is the book for you.

Erin has a dream. She wants to be the Captain of a Level 10 ship. However, there are so many obstacles in her way. Only a handful of dedicated women have ever reached that level. Her father is The Fleet Admiral so standards are set higher for her than for others and she is at risk from his enemies. She has to graduate the Starflight Academy at the top of her class. Plus, she has a responsibility to her people. She serves under the command of the President as a dream jumper. Erin has the ability to jump into other's dreams to find answers. She can solve crimes, but it's dangerous and scary. She has enough on her plate. She can't afford time for boys; she definitely doesn't have time for love. Caleb is half human, half Keltair, a violent species who are hated across the Universe for their killing ways. Due to his heritage, he has never fit in and has suffered dearly. As the son of an Ambassador, he has been granted admittance into the Academy. The expectations of his people are heavy on him to be the best. Of course, Erin and Caleb are natural rivals, they are also meant to be, but are they willing to take a chance on each other or are their career dreams and other's expectations more important? Will they even get a chance to find out since Erin's life is at risk?

This is a wonderful book! Erin and Caleb are equal in every way. They are both smart, competitive, strong, skilled, dedicated, and ambitious. They are both staggering under the weight of their father's expectations and the weaknesses of their mothers. Both have had a lonely childhood. They are kindred spirits, but each fears trusting the other. Their attraction to one another is scorching hot and their tender moments are touching. The science fiction aspect isn't stressed even though we are at a Flight Academy but it's not ignored. Different life forms are nicely done and the living ships of the Keltair are fantastic!

The title is a bit misleading. Erin's dream jumping is not the main focus as the title would make it seem. The focus is on Erin and Caleb which works well. There is so much unexpected depth to this book. The importance of the competition, the budding relationship between Erin and Caleb, the assumptions and prejudices against certain species, the parental expectations, the family histories, friendships, betrayals, and revenge. In the end, it's all overshadowed by fear. What could have been is lost to fear. Fear of repeating history, fear of making the same mistakes as their parents, fear of not reaching our dreams. Sadly the one girl who can jump into anyone's dreams doesn't realize what her true dream is until it's too late and she's made the biggest mistake of all. Heartbreaking ending. I need the next book now! This can't be how it ends.

Oh, my heart hurts…talk about a book hangover. Lacey Carter Anderson blew me away with this book. Erin Stowe is the daughter of Admiral Stowe, but she wants to find her own path and escape the shadow of her father’s reputation. She wants to be the captain of a level 10 ship and nothing will stand in her way as she attends flight academy. Nothing will distract her, that is until she runs into a gorgeous hybrid, Caleb. Now, she must fulfill her duty to earth through her ability to dream jump, fight to stay focused despite her intense attraction to Gabe, and obtain the top scores in her flight school classes. Easy peasy. Lacey Carter Anderson paints this world so beautifully and the dreams Erin finds herself in feel real even to you as a reader. I couldn’t put this book down.

Erin wants to make it on her own and get out of her father's shadow. She attends the academy knowing that it's the first step to getting where she wants. Then she meets Caleb, and they have an instant connection. Not only that but he is kind, sweet, protective and understanding...not to mention wants similar things in life. So of course all of a sudden she needs her father's approval and cuts things off with literally the perfect man for her. I just couldn't deal with this at all. And quite frankly I hope she ends up miserable and alone just like her father...so I cannot continue this series. There was also very little mentioned about how she got her particular dream walking powers. Just not for me.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the characters and loved the concept of entering one's dreams! I would love to see more of that and get more info behind what caused the MC to start being able to do that! I also would like to see more of the back story on the MC to fully understand her relationship with her father. We get a bit of info about her past through out this book but I'd like to see some more, the same with her guy! I feel we only learned a little of his past and wish to know more. Also I love the idea of the live ship he has, that is so cool! I did think a few scenes seemed to skip ahead a bit in the story flow. Over all I look forward to seeing where this series goes!

Caleb and Erin are strongly attired to one another, from the very first moment. But it’s also the least thing they really want, they aspire for something else and love can only be an obstacle. Dangers are running all around Erin. Betrayal is also part of it. Her father adding to her stress. There is not really a calm moment there. Caleb have his own things to overcome and understand. Plot is quite interesting, jumping from one intense moment to another. The characters are well designed and you feel for them, really feel theirs struggle. It’s interesting, however we feel bit lost without all background story being really divulged. I still loved it.

Interesting skill entering and see what people don't want to be seen.

Erin had been through a lot at the beginning of the academy. Her enemies won't wait for a perfect time to attack they just do.

I am fascinated with Caleb. His personality and character is unique and honest.

The amount of time he has saved Erin's life is unbelievable.

Let's see where the journey has progressed since their separation.

Loved this book!! The story was very good, and, honestly, I read it so fast, I did an immediate reread just to take it in a little better! So much to like about this story, but the two main characters and their chemistry was fantastic! Erin is a strong MC and Caleb is just perfectly yummy!! The ending, however, hurt my heart... NEED book 2....now!

This book sucked me in....completely! With an interesting storyline that moves at a fairly quick but consistent pace, a few twists and you will be hooked. Throw in Erin, a strong, kick butt kinda girl and Caleb a determined alpha male and you have two characters who will butt heads! Let the games begin!

Predictable

I wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. I found it predictable and easily guessed the twists. I also wanted to know more about this world where aliens were common, but there wasn't that much world building since the story focused more on the romance and mystery of who was trying to get the MC.

Erin and Caleb...

First I've heard of these authors, I gave this book 4 cups of hot java, ☕☕☕☕.

Good flowing storyline that caught my attention and didn't fail to let me go. Plenty action between characters, gets pretty intense toward end of the book that will leave you with need to grab onto the next book to continue hope and watch for Erin and Caleb coming together.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I was wary because I’m not normally into this genre, but man am I happy that I read it. The characters are relatable and Caleb, he’s my favorite. I can’t wait to start the next book!

Sexy science fiction romance

This is an exciting, sexy, fast-paced, science fiction romance filled with an interesting heroine and most intriguing alien hero. The down-side is this is a series that ends in something of a cliffhanger.

An alien love story

Well written with lots of action and a bit too much steam for my taste. Very imaginative with some twists and turns. I was a bit disappointed that there is a cliffhanger at the end. Great to this series.

Good

Wasn't sure what to expect from this book at first but it was really good. It wasn't just about sex or their blinding attraction but had a good plot and storyline. Made me sad at the end but cant wait to read book 2.
