Lost and freezing in the snow. Death hovers near. Until the man with the yellow eyes comes.
Alyssa Malgrave is a warrior. Admittedly, she's not been a warrior for long. Neither has she actually fought in any wars. She does, however, have a thirst for vengeance for the monsters that killed her parents. And she does want to find her brother again, whom she has not heard from in four years. Dead or alive, she has to know. So she travels to the place he went – the Lunar Wasteland.
There, she meets her fate. There lies a man with gleaming yellow eyes, with a perchance for shapeshifting. A man whose life will become irrevocably altered with hers...

Alyssa Malgrave stopped at The Blood Moon Inn and met the witch owner, Raine, who gave her a pendant for her protection. She also told her not to try to navigate the Lunar Wasteland without a guide. The inn is also where she met the guide Gorvald and his two female companions willing to lead her.
The blizzard howled around Alyssa as she stumbled through the swirling snowfall of the Lunar Wasteland. She had been betrayed, robbed, and abandoned by the guide she hired -- so eager to find her brother, Erlandur Malgrave who had vanished four years before without a trace -- that she hadn’t thought things through first. Armed and ready to battle the deadly Shadows who had killed her parents – and maybe her brother -- she had miscalculated on the climate here. A Shadow came at her and she defeated it with the magical sword she carried. But her body was burning hot; she needed to take everything off of her.
Then she heard growling, and a shaggy creature with yellow eyes came out of the darkness, fangs displayed. Her mind and her vision shut down. She woke up on soft sheets with a fire blazing nearby. Who had saved her from the beast? A knock on the door, and a man entered with a tray of food. His yellow eyes and sharp teeth told her this was her unlikely rescuer! He chuckled, commenting that they didn’t often have human women foolish enough to come dying on their doorstep. But he was offended at being called a monster. Another man walked past the door and had the same yellow eyes as he glanced in. Her rescuer told her she was in wolf territory and would be safe from demons. Kain introduced himself, admitted they were werewolves here, and left when she again called him a monster.
When the Shadows attacked, Kain ran to the Snow Witch’s cave. Garcia was an ugly old woman who used magic to keep them safe. But she wanted Kain to get the new female tested to see if she had any magic to help as the Snow Witch’s power weakened with the increased attacks. But Alyssa was his! He wanted her to have time to fall in love. And what was going on at the Fractured City that the Shadows numbers seemed to be increasing? Something must be wrong in the city. The Snow Witch finally released her power and destroyed the Shadows. But she told them she could only do so once more before she expired. She needed someone to train. And the witch skull must only be used against a Supreme, the leaders of the mindless enemy. Garcia gave Kain only two days to fill the woman with his seed before her normal life was over and a new one would start. If he can’t convince her to accept him, she will be raped by another and, if she runs, killed. Garcia added that they needed to contact the other clans and organize raids into human villages. They desperately needed more women to test. Can they find who they need before it is too late?
This was a very different type of story with excellent world building. The characters were worthy of the reader’s respect. Alyssa is strong, brave, and loyal to her family, working hard to try to save her brother if she can. Kain is caring and dedicated to his clan. Will he get to claim the mate he has longed for? Or will the good of the clan and entire region take her away from him?
This quick read is heavier on world building than plot, and feels like it is laying the foundation for the subsequent stories... I mean that in a good way, it is a rich, vibrant, and full world, but Alyssa and Jain don't feel like they DO much within this installment, which is preparing us for world changing events to come.
Alyssa is a strong, independent and capable young woman who cares about others and is determined not just to complete her self-employed mission, but retain perspective.
Kain is revealed by his actions, and his concern / care for those around him. The more we see of him, the more I found to both like and respect
It was the characters that earned the rating on this quick read.
The majority of the pages in my download of this e-book were bonus books / materials, including at least one that had notes from either an editor or a beta reader still appended at the end.
I love this as the young woman spent four years learning to fight and kill shadows with a very valuable sword she stole. She goes to the wastelands but in crossing into them her guides prove disloyal. She continues to look for her brother till it looks like she will die in them. She is rescued by a werewolf and taken to his home to be cared for. In this new world she learns she must be test for magic requiring she sleep with a werewolf . Her choice is within two days she can be with the wolf who saved her or another werewolf. What will she choose? What of the story will guide her choice? Will she be happy with the deal she makes?
I liked this story but wasn't wowed by it. Although this can be a standalone, it is really part of a series and if you want to find out what is really going on, you'll have to keep reading the series. It might be nice to know what is going on with the shadows and Alyssa's brother but I probably won't read further into the series to get the answers.
This short story surprised me quite pleasantly! It was unexpected that the storyline is quite gripping and if you start reading you don't want to stop until you actually find out all about shadows and how the evil will be defeated. At this installment, Alyssa and Kain's story takes place. I can't wait to read the next one!
Great layout for the series. Promises excitement, intrigue, and romance what a great start. You know there's going to be excitement because she has a lot of grit and resolve to find her brother.
I just finished reading and immediately bought the box set. I loved the more unique storyline, not just another shifter looking for his mate story. The old good verses evil but with magic, witches, shifters and kick ass females. What’s not to love !
