From the time children are little we start making stories about them. She has a mind of her own , He isn t that intelligent but he tries. These narratives are like garments we weave out for them. The interesting thing is that the children learn to describe themselves and others start describing them according to these stories. Imagine is about how the teachers can build that connect and help build richer stories for each child. It is about a deep commitment to make sure that no child is left invisible, and it is about spreading these rich stories far and wide.
The book is really good. Talks about ways in which we can connect with every child at school. It's true that a good teacher does shape our life and a bad one gives us scar for life. However, given the constant change in syllabus every now and then and daily blue print of syllabus it's hard for a teacher to find time to connect personally. I really hope the author take this book forward to change mindset for the principal and management team. Given at the end of day we all thrive on number and so do parents, this shift will take time. No doubt it is a good start but I feel the interference by parents on what is taught every day is more more. Also, a few child who have no reason for the nuisance they create apart from it being their habit. The second last part of this book is refreshing and I like how author has paid attention to link every chapter with existing literature.
A charter of resolutions that every parent and every teacher should collaborate to create a space for the child where every child shines - not academically but in an all-round manner. Especially, pertinent is the thought about - the stories that we create about our children and around our children and leave them influenced for life - positively or negatively. The learnings from this book are certainly on my wish list to use in the projects I am involved in.
This is a great book. So much thought put into how educational systems can be reformed. Shelja really gets into child psychology and talks through the various ways in which we could be helping kids with not just education but their lives in general. Love all the quotes from other books, and came across a lot of reading material for this year through the recommendations from this book. A must read for every teacher, parent, human being out there. :)
