The sequel to Enlightened By Billie Kowalewski. Kaleb has left for Earth without Harmony's knowledge and is now on Earth as Curtis Parker who is suffering a dark depression and tries to end his life. With Harmony on the other side, along with their spirit guides Luke and Jack, will they be able to come up with a plan to help Curtis (A.K.A. Kaleb)?
From back cover:
All Kaleb had to do was wait. Wait until I was done with my new job and I would have gone with him to Earth. That was the plan we had agreed too. Well, somewhere along the way he changed his mind and left for Earth not telling me. Now, he is on Earth, living his life as Curtis Parker, suffering a very dark depression and can't remember why. Thanks to the barrier hidden deep inside his mind he can't remember who he really is, or being in love with me. If he did, maybe he wouldn't have tried to end his life.
Our main characters are Harmony and Caleb, two soul mates trapped in separate realms, with Harmony in Heaven, and Kaleb (Earth name Curt) on Earth. Harmony and Curt’s interactions act as a framing device for the main story, with Harmony becoming the book’s main narrator. Within the pair’s story is the tale of one of their past lives on Earth, specifically focusing on Harmony’s life as Veronica, a young girl whose parents have gotten divorced.
Veronica’s mother was a most infuriating character. She continuously treated Veronica like dirt, often arriving home drunk and neglecting Veronica’s best interests, while lavishing attention on her younger sister Katie, who believes any of their mother's lies. I believe that the tension between Veronica and her mother stems from the divorce and how much her mother actually misses her ex-husband. It probably doesn’t help that Veronica takes after her father and thus probably reminds her mother of him.
In contrast to Veronica’s mother, her father is a kind and compassionate man, who is painted as a negative figure by Veronica’s mother for the majority of the book. This only added to my frustration with her mother’s character. Sometimes, I just wanted to slap some sense into her (And I do NOT believe in ever hitting anyone, especially not a lady, as I consider myself a gentleman, but this character was truly malicious.)
Having experienced my own parent’s divorce, I could not believe how stark the contrast was between Veronica's two parents. Her mother behaved cruelly, often doing as much as she could to spite Veronica and ruin her plans. Her mother was like a spoilt brat. Not only is her divorce her own fault for committing adultery, but she then portrays herself as a victim.
Gah! That woman was beyond infuriating!
However, I did love how Veronica’s character became increasingly cunning as she reached the age of seventeen, in order to bypass her mother’s cruel and ridiculous orders. These scenes, such as Veronica climbing out of her bedroom window to go to a bar and hear music, had me cheering her on all the way.
Though Veronica may not have her mother’s support as she battles adolescence, she does have her Meme (Grandmother) and Grandfather, who more than make up for her mother’s pretty treatment and lack of love, or the distance placed between Veronica and her father.
As Veronica’s Story continues, it follows the journey that her soul takes as she falls in love with a kind boy she affectionately calls ‘Sackson’ (one of Curt’s previous life forms.) Their two souls have a remarkable bond that prevails across multiple life-spans. I adored the emotional vulnerability I saw in Curt’s character as he learns of his past lives with Harmony (as Veronica and Jackson).
I still can’t get over how much I loved Veronica’s ‘Sackson’ nickname though. Every time I remember it, I break out into a fit of laughter.
On the downward side of things, I felt truly sorry for Veronica when her only friend ('Sackson') disappears from the story. I was overjoyed when he makes a reappearance years later, allowing the pair to develop a coy romance that blossoms into true love. I feel that the relationship between the two is so pure and romantic that for once, it feels as though two characters will live happily ever after.
I would definitely recommend that you check out Divided, by Bille Kowalewski, especially if you have a love for Urban Fantasy and Young Adult books.
My rating? Definitely 5 stars!

This is the second book in the enlightened trilogy. This book is a lot different from book one. I would like to start with the writing style, I have to say it improves a lot from book one, this time it didn’t take time to get into the book. The writing style is original and organic. I am impressed by the vocabulary of the author I learnt a lot of new words. Book one was mostly spent on world building, and telling the reader about the system and introducing them to the theme. This part was a lot different and characterization is done beautifully , the relationships are perfect. I liked the character of Harmony, you get to see the characters grow. I feel this part gave Kaleb , a lot more space and we get to know him more. The pace is medium, nor too slow or too fast. It’s just perfect. The cover is so good and it’s really eye catching. Recently the author revealed the cover of the third part, it was equally good, I love the cover of each book in this series. Yes , I highly recommend it if you are looking for some fantasy, romance, paranormal.
As much as I loved Enlightened, I have to say that this book was even better! I love that we get to find out what happened in their previous life. Everything about this book just brings me to my knees. I wish that I can forget it so I could experience it again from the beginning!
I got a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book, even more than the first book in the series. I liked that we got to explore one of Harmony’s lives in a little more detail then what we saw before, and that we get to see more of how Harmony and Kaleb’s relationship developed. I also loved the parts with Kaleb and Harmony’s guides, Luke and Jack. I really like them, they might even be some of my favorite characters in the series! Overall, while Enlightened was good, Divided is even better!
After Kaleb went to Earth without Harmony in Enlightened, and ended up severely depressed in his life there, Harmony uses an unusual method to try to pull him out of his funk.
This book really delves into Harmony's life as Veronica, and shows how she met Seth. She had a truly terrible upbringing, and I was getting frustrated for her while reading it! I am glad she had Seth in that life, though poor Seth had a horrible childhood, also!
The are things left unfinished in this story, so I am really looking forward to reading the next book and seeing how it all plays out.
How do you describe a work of pure genius. This novel was so page turnable that it took me less than a day to read it then move onto the next one. I don't know if it is just the author's writing or the story itself but I think that it is one of the best books I have ever read along withnis entire series.
This is part two of Enlightened. It is the love story of soulmates, Kaleb and Harmony, spread over many life times. A love that endures, heals and is eternal. May we all love and be loved like the characters in this series. Great book!
Kaleb wasn’t supposed to go to Earth without Harmony, and now he has suffered from deep depression and attempted suicide. Harmony, Luke, and Jack must come up with a plan to help Kaleb/Curtis before he succeeds at taking his own life, thus making it so that both Harmony and Kaleb are unable to return to the school or eventually graduate.
Even though this book was supposed to mostly focus on Kaleb and Harmony’s current situation with being stuck in seemingly different universes, it is mostly spent talking about the previous lives that Kaleb and Harmony have shared. This is not necessarily a bad thing! I love every bit of Harmony and Kaleb that I can get, and their previous life had a very interesting story. I will instead focus my review on that life, rather than on the current life they are in, simply because it was the majority of the story.
Veronica’s parents are divorced, and Veronica’s mother spends most of her time doting on her younger sister Katie. Her sister Katie doesn’t see any problems with her mother, but Veronica can see the truth. Her only solace is her grandmother Meme, and her best friend Jackson.
I love the fact that Kaleb and Harmony get to experience multiple lives together because that means that in nearly every book I get to see a complete life of theirs rather than just a few years! It was so special to see Veronica/Harmony grow up from a young girl scared after her parents’ divorce, to a preteen suffering under her mother’s control, to a confident teenage girl who is able to make her own decisions. I selfishly wish that some of this side story had been told from Jackson/Kaleb’s point of view as well, but I liked the way it was written either way. This story does deal with some child abuse, but it does it in a sensitive way so it should not bother anyone.
This story had amazing pacing, I flew through the entire book in almost one sitting. Even though there were timeskips, they were done in a non-confusing way, and I was able to stay in the story.
The world-building was also incredible. The story flows between Caleb’s time and Veronica & Jackson’s time, but I was still able to identify both worlds as independent entities. It was interesting to read the back and forth, and see how the worlds were unique and yet the same in some ways. I couldn’t keep up with which time period each world was supposed to be in though.
I would recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and YA fantasy-romance novels.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I read this book within in two nights! This is the second book of the series and it follows one of the Kaleb's current lives but also clears up the original life from the first book. I really hope there is more from this universe that the author creates. It's not your typical loves story and it really opens your mind to different possibilities. I think what captured me with this story is that it would be amazing to realize that this could be only one of your lifetimes and each lifetime comes with their own challenges and teachings. I loved this book, truly amazing.
Book Blurb: The sequel to Enlightened By Billie Kowalewski. What a heart-warming story! Seriously, this author has great skill in getting us into the main character’s thoughts and emotions. The rage, urges, and determination all rang true. I did suspect instantly who the mysterious beer-spiller was, and I was thrilled to be right. The relationship was wonderfully crafted and skillfully completed.
By far my favorite character was Jackson/Sackson. He was complex, likable, and a perfect foil for Veronica’s protective rage. I especially liked how her strength was emphasized, both in caring for herself and her sister in the absence of her mother’s care and of Sackson in the face of bullies.
Definitely a great story for those that love strong female characters and well-crafted personal growth stories.
I loved the frame tale of Harmony and Caleb. It added a particular poignancy and deeper meaning to the main story.
The only flaws I saw were a couple typos scattered without and an occasional extraneous comma.
I was blessed with a free copy of this book, and I have chosen of my own volition to share my review with you! This book was received in exchange for an honest review, my review has not been altered by the receipt of this book for free.
This book, much like "Enlightened" took a bit to get into, but once I caught on to what was going on; I did not want to put the book down. There is a bit of heat in this book, but overall it is a clean read. The main character Kaleb/Curtis Parker is sent to earth without his mate, which causes him much depression in this current life. He tries to end it all, and his mate is allowed to come help him move through his depression. He has to learn something in this life in order to be able to successfully return to heaven and his mate. Can he continue living this way?
Wow, I was looking forward to the second book of the series and I liked it even better than the first one. I’m still enchanted by the idea of many lives spent on Earth until the soul matures. The everlasting love between Kaleb and Harmony are reiterated over their past lives. And, the one told in this book was so heartwarming, so sweet that I was hooked. A little girl neglected by her mother finds love and support through her friendship with a boy who is bullied himself. As the two mend their wounds with each other’s support, they both find acceptance and eternal love. I want to read many more stories about this couple, the one in this book felt real, it was touching and it was beautifully written. Loved it.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I am glad that we get a little more detail on one of Harmony's lives. It is a little sad that Kaleb goes back to earth without Harmony. I wanted to scream and get mad at him, but once he is back he is going through a lot without her to balance him out. So the separation is taking a toll on the both of them. Now along with Luke and Jack the spirit guides they are doing the best to help Curtis (Kaleb) not do anything that could end badly for them all. It is even better than the first one. I hope there is more to come because this is such an amazing series.
Having read and enjoyed "Enlightened," I've been looking forward to it's follow-on, another uniquely creative tale from this author. Kowalewski will remain on my radar and I will be interested in what she comes up with next.
