When approached with an unexpected job offer, Merry leaps at the chance of a return to Egypt, hoping also to discover what happened to a set of ancient tablets once found in Queen Nefertari's temple at Abu Simbel. These appear to explain the origins of this mysterious ancient Egyptian Queen. But once employed on her mission along the Nile, it soon becomes clear all may not be quite as it seems. There are those for whom her new role is both an opportunity and a threat. As a series of unexplained mishaps befall her party, Merry starts to wonder whom she can trust and whether she is the only one hoping to unearth Egypt's ancient secrets.

I've been fascinated by ancient Egypt since my parents took me to Cairo and Luxor as a teenager. I've read just about everything I can lay my hands on about it - fact and fiction. In 2012 I decided to write a series of Egypt-inspired books of my own. Modern adventure/mystery stories, with a light sprinkling of romance - set in the present day, but with an ancient mystery involved. They're intended as light, escapist fiction. I hope they transport the reader to the heat, dust and sunshine of Egypt from wherever he or she happens to be in the world. I travel to Egypt as often as I can.

This series is very Indiana Jones...it's a couple of treasure hunting Egyptologists. It's a creative and unapologetic imagining of what discoveries there are left in Egypt, sought by people who have a knack for unearthing literally every artifact they set their minds to, set against the backdrop of modern Egypt with all its current newsworthy troubles.
It's pretty good fun, and I always end up learning something in the process. In this one, Merry and Adam are on the track of some stone tablets that might reveal the family origin of Nefertari, the wife of Ramses II. Their previous major discovery plays a role in the plot, but fortunately they are starting to expand their points of interest.

Lighthearted trip through Egypt's history

I love the way that the author interweaves enough fact with her fiction to give the story some weight. I engaged with the main characters from Book 1 and have enjoyed seeing them develop. Write fast Fiona because after the next book I will miss Meredith, Adam and the gang!

What's frustrating is it's the best plot of all her books but the amount of fatphobia it had, made me knock if at least one of not more stars. Horrific. Just read the highlights. I felt a drop in my stomach at each one thing of how this author must hate fat people.

The story itself was strong, longer than the others and more elaborate. Though I'm not sure how many times Merry can find a tomb and not announce it?
