A fairly entertaining historical romance, amazing how much plot there was in 350 pages - the many convolutions made it seem longer than it was but at the same time kept the pace nicely brisk. Good quality narrative. I know little enough about the English civil war not to be bothered by wondering about historical accuracy - it seemed accurate enough to me.

Synopsis - SPOILER ALERT:

In the early stages of the Civil war, the main character, Lilias, then a young girl, arrives in Bristol with her ailing father, republican refugees from Cornwall. They find shelter with friends, a family of Puritans. The story tells of Lilias adapting to her new life, marrying three times, mostly for reasons of convenience, but feeling true love only for one man she meets early on, but who is married, in a devoted but also estranged marriage. We follow her life for twenty-five years through many ups and downs, of course she is involved with the royal court, she has a number of children whose careers we follow as well - until she can finally be united with her one true love.
