Katie Flynn was born in Norwich and attended Norwich High School, where she was extremely happy and extremely undistinguished. Published at the tender age of eight, in Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories, she joined a Writers’ Circle as an adult, publishing short stories, articles, etc; only turning to novels in 1971 because the postal strike cut off her main source of income! At first she wrote under several different names – Judith Saxton, Judy Turner, Lydia Balmain, Judith Arden – but her Katie Flynn books were a delight to write and proved far more popular than she had dreamed. She has now published nearly ninety novels, twenty-seven of which are Flynns. Her most recent titles are: Lost Days of Summer and Christmas Wishes.
My first Christmas read this year and it was lovely. I love books set on canal boats. I loved all the characters and poor Rosie, and her love for Daisy, and Pepe. A delightful heartwarming tale.
Great book as always from one of my favourite authors
Great book as always from one of my favourite authors, I introduced my mum to Katie Flynn books and she loved them too. Sadly mum passed away last year and now when I read Katie books i just wish mum was still here to enjoy them.
Very enjoyable book to read. This is a combination of Katie Flynn and her daughter Holly writing this. Don't be put off by this as I thought it was a really good read. It's set on the English canal system during WW2.
It's 1939 and in Liverpool rumours of war are rife. Striking fear into shipping and canal workers. At fifteen Rosie O'Leary has to grow up fast as life on the barges are changing and the future is uncertain. With a none too happy homelife she clings to her one friend, Tim. But when he joins up with the RAF even that bright light is taken away. Still she forges on and becomes "Number one" on her barge with her own crew. But amidst the hardships can she ever have a future and a happy ever after with Tim? A really lovely wartime tale.
Enjoyed this good another great read from Katie flynn. Her daughter helped in the writing of this book . But nothing was taken away still great writing in Katie’s old style.. hope to see more books published with help from her daughter. Rosie grows up working on the barges and her life on the canal sis always busy... when her mother leaves she is left to run the business on her own. With help from friend along the way....see how her life works out wil she get Tim back or has a rival friend taken her best friend for good after she starts working as a War time member in the base where Tim is. Great good reading.
leaving one life to live on a barge for her war work was a hard decision and not an easy life but when she meets Tim who offers to show her round she is happy. when he leaves to fight in the war she hopes he will return maybe to her but in the meantime she worries that someone else will attract Tim
A very interesting story but thought the ending would have more detail as to what happened to everyone. The story kept me interested throughout the book. I didn't like the attitude of Rosies mother but could understand why as the story unfolded. I have now read 12 of Katie Flynn books and I have not been disappointed with this one. Which was around the time of work war 2.
I found this book very slow to get into and almost gave up, which I hate doing so I kept going. The story it's self was good but to me it was just a very slow book. I've read better by Katie Flynn and no doubt will in the future. I loved Pepe in the book.
What a wonderful book reading about the canals and the folks who work on them and of course the wonderful girls Rosie ,babs, and harri, and of course Rosie mam Maggie a brilliant 5 STARS .
And our final buddy read of the year is now over! Kayleigh, Sam and I have finished of the year with another Katie Flynn book - and another choice of mine!
Contrary to the title - this is not a Christmas story. Christmas doesn’t actually take place until the last chapter so I was a bit upset about that!
This is a lovely heartwarming story about a lass named Rosie who works on the Barges around Liverpool during the wartime.
The characters are all very endearing and you do really connect with them - this is something I find with every Katie Flynn book I read which is wonderful. Rosie is a firm favourite of mine - love a good sassy scouser - we are bred to endure most heartaches and fallouts and Rosie is no exception!
I must admit I did enjoy the mystery surrounding the book and the cute happy ending but I will say that you can read this in January and it still be completely acceptable
katie Flynn books are always good and this is no exception. Liverpool 1939 and rumours of war are circulating. Rosie O'Leary lives and works on the canals with her mother whom she has always had a strange relationship with. but when her mother marries again Rosie is granted freedom she has never had before. while her mother and husband go to learn how to operate a barge with engine instead of a horse they are used to; Rosie is allowed into Liverpool with fellow bargee Tim. this starts a deep friendship but then war is declared and Tim joins the RAF so putting Rosies dream on hold. her mother missing her husband who has enlisted goes to work on the land and Rosie is left in charge along with two women who have come to help as part of their war work. Will her dreams about Tim and her ever come true or will he betray her? i really liked this story it has lots of twists and turns plus a nice bit of romance!
I really enjoyed this story, ( even though contrary to the title - it is not a Christmas story... this does rather bug me) this Author seems to have released several books with Christmas in the title, I presume she thinks they will get more sales at Christmas time, but for me it would normally mean that I would only buy them / and listen to them in December. I had guessed this and felt ok reading it in January
My first Christmas read of the year and my first Katie Flynn book. This is a lovely heartwarming story of Rosie who lives on the canals in Liverpool in wartime. The characters in the story are endearing and I felt connected to them from the first few pages. I Really enjoyed this book and I look to reading more Katie Flynn novels in the future.
The book never truly gripped me until the last few chapters where everything came to a tumultuous ending and the storyline is good enough but could have been more developed.
An enchanting book to read about Rosie O'Leary living on the barge with her mother and step father into 1940 wartime. I loved the whole story right through. A lovely read for the cold winter days.
