They say age doesn’t matter. I could argue that it does. The ten years separating Stella Cruz and I matter a whole hell of a lot.
She has a year of college left—two entire semesters to enjoy being the star pitcher of Fulton University—and I have another Cup to win. Hockey leaves no room for anything else, not even someone as incredible as Stella. So, I left her in my bed. Out of sight, out of … sight. Because I damn sure can’t get her out of my mind.
Everyone says time heals all wounds. That’s a lie. Six months ago, Jason Dagger left me in Boston after one of the best weekends of my life. Shut me down when I tried to reach out. He didn’t call, didn’t text, didn’t even wave at the camera when it panned over to him during one of his hockey games. Nothing … until he shows up at my job one night demanding and sexy.
Jason’s back and he’s not making anything easy for me. I don’t know if I’m happy or mad about it.
****THIS BOOK WAS PREVIOUSLY RELEASED IN THE TEAM PLAYER ANTHOLOGY. IT NOW HAS ADDED CONTENT***
I took a chance without knowing anything about this and it bit me in the a$$. The hero was a typical sports "hero" who's inner thoughts told his true character...puck bunnies and happy endings with massage therapist etc. Reasons I usually avoid sports stories like the plague. The problem is I like them when they are done without manwhores...and they have been done, they are unfortunately rare. To top it off, he was embarrassed that he spent the 4 days with the heroine because she was 10 years younger and treated her horribly when she came to tell him some news she had. There was no redemption for him in my mind.
The heroine was ok. She wasn't going to beg or plead with him. She saw him for what he was and hit the road. I still think she should have told him the news early on, but I understood her not wanting anthing to do with him
-no violence of a sexual nature -safety- hero was a player and was with others after the heroine. She was not with others -zero epilogue which is another zinger to the rating. However, I read this in the Team Player anthology and I'm hearing the new release may have one.
This was just an okay book for me. The story moved very fast timeline wise so by the end I never really saw a connection between the characters. I also didn't understand why the story went from Stella and Jason meeting and spending four days together, most of which we didn't see, to six months later when he's back, and then a flash back scene of three months before that when Stella tried to visit him. It just seemed very odd to me and made me feel like I was missing something.
But overall it wasn't a horrible story and I'm very interested to see what else will come from this series. The characters still managed to intrigue me even in such a small amount of time and I think any fan of a douchebag-turned-great-guy will enjoy this one.
Ok I went back and read this in the Team Player anthology, because I originally skipped it, but I saw it was coming out by itself soon. So here we are.
All I can say is that Jason & Stella are hot and their story is steamy, unexpected, and sweet.
Not sure if the re-release will have more added to it, but the original is short and sweet, but still oh so good. I loved it, and hope we see more of them as the author continues the series!
Perhaps it's against some reading etiquette rule that I don't know about to rate free books so low, but this was disappointing.
Reasons:
1) Not enough build-up of the "relationship" (it's really hard to call what Jason and Stella had a relationship, when she got pregnant after their 4-day fling, he ruthlessly blew her off when she came to tell him about the baby 4 months later, then they reunited after another 2 months and when Jason found out about the pregnancy, they basically fell into a relationship after few days, without discussing their issues or without Jason doing AT LEAST a minimum of grovelling for how he treated Stella)
2) I did NOT like Jason - he was the walking definition of alpha-jerk and said gross things like this all the time:
"The thought of what it might take to make her blush makes me hard. Right now, as she sits there in her sports bra and spandex, legs swinging, her skin is the color of coffee with the perfect amount of cream. I can’t wait to see what color that pretty skin turns when I have her underneath me. Please let her fine ass be legal because if she is, I’m going to show her I can score off the ice as well as on it."
(tbh, this excerpt makes me wonder if I shouldn't just give this book 1 star, because...just look at this 30-year old guy, he has no qualms salivating over a girl when he doesn't even know if she's "legal" or not)
"Maybe it’s because she doesn’t give a shit about who I am, even after she found out I was a pro athlete. I’m not sure when that started to matter, but her not caring or treating me any differently made me want to reward her. With my cock."
(don't you just LOVE those guys who act as if they're god's best gift to women? *rolls eyes*
“You like these?” I ask softly, running my fingers over her panties, tiny strings and rhinestones holding them together, and she nods. This girl wore these with fucking in mind."
(this bothered me SO MUCH actually - I remember there has been a rape case sometime ago, I think it was in Irish court, where defendant of the rapist admitted victim's underwear as evidence, claiming that a woman wearing g-string on her evening out, just HAD TO have planned to have sex that night. And this might've been just one (only) seemingly harmless sentence here but it triggered me so much and this line of thinking is just wrong and gross and falls right under rape culture and I cannot believe people still write shit like this)
"Never mind that I would love to take her inside and let her do all kinds of things to me, if only she weren’t a twenty-year-old kid."
"Stella, you’re fucking twenty,” I hiss. “A student, for fuck’s sake. You know what they would say about me in the league if they knew that while I was checking on their draft pick, I went ahead and fell into some college-aged pussy?”
(so...Jason had no reservations about having sex with Stella, in fact he was basically praying that she was LEGAL, but when she came to visit him and his hockey buddies were there suddenly he was all YOU ARE ONLY TWENTY HOW DARE YOU - what a f*cking hypocrite. oh, and she only visited him to tell him she got pregnant but he never gave her a chance to do that)
“I’ll give you that one, Stella, because I treated you like shit the last time I saw you. Go ahead and get it out of your system now, so that we can talk about what we’re going to do, like adults. I’m not the bad guy. In fact, I’m doing my best to be a good fucking guy here. Let me.”
(so that's just so BIG OF HIM because he blew her off and yes, treated her like shit when she came to tell him she was pregnant, and when he learns of the pregnancy 2 months later and ambushes her in her place of work, he suddenly acts all high and mighty and "I'm trying to be the good guy". he claims he's not the bad guy? well, I beg to differ)
3) Stella was OK character I guess but it's hard to tell, because her main purpose seemed to be to tell the reader what a good guy Jason was 🙃 When he comes back, she gives him a hard time for about 5 seconds, then seems to forget all he did and that she had to fend for herself for 6 months while pregnant while he was off enjoying life.
4) Compared to the other points, this seems like a small one, but Jason was definitely NOT celibate during the 6 months he and Stella were apart - which, as usual, LOGICALLY I understand, because they were not together, but it's not something I appreciate in romance novels, especially when heroine is 100% celibate and saying stuff like "I only wanted YOU". It's a thing/trope I hate with a burning passion (hero living his life, heroine celibate and pining after the hero) and authors really need to stop writing it this way.
This book is the first one in the series and usually when I start a series, I need to finish it, it's just how my brain works. But I enjoyed this book so little and it contained so many elements I don't enjoy and actually consider harmful, I don't think I will bother.
Especially since Levi (hockey player, Jason was his mentor of sorts) seems to be a 20-year old carbon copy of Jason. He had some decent moments in the story (acting protective of Stella, for example) but then I read the sneak peek of his book at the end of this one and he says this:
"She scoffs and then smiles sweetly. “No thanks. You’re not my type.” With raised eyebrows, I nod in understanding. “Ooooh, you’re a lesbian. That’s cool. I’m all about one love, bi-love, self-love. Whatever.”
"You're not my type" --> "Oh, you're a lesbian" - sure yeah, that's THE ONLY logical conclusion! I was partially set on MAYBE giving Levi's book a chance until I read this exchange. But no. No, no, no, no, NOPE.
You know what? I think I got angry enough to bump this from 1,5 stars rounded up to 1. I'm too salty and tired to look past stuff like this.
Content warning: hero not celibate after meeting heroine (implied)
Loved this novella but I want more! I love this authors writing style and how she can turn a short story into something unique, funny and emotional leaving you wanting more!! Loved Jason and Stella!!
Ooh! This book was nothing but fire! Their connection was instant and just continued to grow. I loved that the break happened like it did instead of later in the story. The baby was an interesting twist and made total sense considering they spent four days doing almost nothing but adult fun time activities lol!
The way she wrapped up their story was so beautiful too! I will definitely come back to this series!
I think my favorite thing about Sin Bin (other than that it was about hockey players) is Stella Cruz - she is such a strong female lead and I loved that Jason had to really work to win her over. I also really liked his family and Levi and I can't wait to find out more about him in Sweater Weather! I'm so happy to have gotten an extended version of this story and to see that there's going to be a whole Fulton University Hockey series! I can't wait to read them all!!!! 4 out of 5 wine glasses.
Jason Dagger is a hot shot hockey player for Chicago. While visiting Levi, a Fulton University hockey player he mentors, he sees a gorgeous girl across the therapy room at the university. Stella Cruz is a softball pitcher going into senior year at Fulton. There is something about her that draws Jason in completely. When Jason officially meets Stella, it’s refreshing that she doesn’t recognize Jason, and they spend a hot weekend together. Then he’s headed back home to Chicago with only memories of Stella. Six months later he returns to Boston to visit his family and hopes he can see Stella again. When he does, he’s in for a big surprise.
Jason is confident and cocky but he is so sweet. He comes from a loving family and he carries that love with him. Stella is hardworking, sincere, and a beautiful inside and out. She wants to make something of herself and is determined to make it happen.
Together, Jason and Stella are smoking hot. It’s a steamy read and hotter than some of the other novellas but it still has an amazingly sweet hero and we get all the mushy stuff that makes your heart flutter. It’s a great glimpse into the Fulton University Hockey team and I can’t wait to get more. Levi’s story, Sweater Weather sounds good!!

So wicked hot it could melt ice! You could feel the heated connection between the two from the first page. I wish it was longer because I love them so much. Add a novella size Epilogue and it would definitely make my winter even warmer!
Stella and Jason are discovering that there are things worth sinning for! Stella has worked so hard to get to where she is. Her Abuela raised her and her brother to be strong and after her passing away it was just them, but Stella made sure to carry those lessons all the way to a softball scholarship to Fulton University. Nothing is going to stop her from graduating and making sure that she achieves a bright future. When she spots Jason from across the sports complex she can appreciate his aesthetic attributes, but she will not be swayed but a hot guy. Jason has gotten used to woman falling at his NHL skates, but Stella has no idea who he even is and it really is refreshing. He knows he should stay away from a woman ten years his junior, but there is something compelling about the minx and Jason is caught in her mitt. After what can only be described as some of the most powerful encounters he has ever had, Stella and Jason go their separate ways. Unlike most of his conquest, Stella doesn’t press for more and when he tries to meet back up with her he is in for quite the surprise. Jason is going to have his work cut for him if he wants to get Stella to give him a second shot.
Sin Bin was originally published in The Team Player Anthology. I didn't read it in the anthology but if you did this one has added content. It's a good quick read. Stella is a college student and a star softball player. Jason is a star NHL hockey player. They meet when Jason comes to her college campus to check in a recruit. Their connection is off the charts. They have a great weekend together then Jason is back off to life in Chicago. Then the story jumps to six months later and I was like why don't we get what happened in those six months but then I kept reading I was like wow that's why we jumped six months ahead. Jason is great. He's possession and sweet all wrapped up together. Stella is great too. She's not clingy and is very independent. I loved these two. Their story was great and I so could have read more of them. I'm looking forward to Levi's story. 4 1/2 Stars!
Oh my god, so hot, so sexy, and so damn funny! It is impossible, not to fall for Stella and Jason! Mandi Beck delivers again. One of these days I will share a drink with that woman and thank her for all the crazy beautiful stories she creates that I look forward to. Best Birthday gift to myself in a long time. I can’t wait to read Sweater Weather lol Levi seems nice and cocky and if he is anything like his mentor Jason I’m sure to fall for him as well!!!
I suddenly love HOCKEY! I’ll never look at a penalty box again or a pair of pajamas with a flap! Trust me you’ll be thanking me later! Stella has bite , she’s strong and don’t tell her what to do but Jason he’s not having it! Fun sexy Hot I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough! loved every single word. You’ll be begging for a trip to the Sin Bin!
This came free in a newsletter, and it’s been at least a few weeks since I’ve read a sports romance, so I figured why not, yanno?
It was okay. Not meh, but also not wow. It’s a cute, quick read, so that’s nice. Nothing too dramatic so that’s pretty chill. Nothing to super connect to, so that is what it is, I guess.
Jason a player in the NHL meets Stella we he goes to meet the player he is mentoring. These two definitely are attracted to each other. They have some wild days together and then he leaves to go back to where he lives. Six months go by before he gets a surprise that occurred from their time in the Sin Bin.
Loved his family. Can't wait to read more in the series.
DNF. I could’ve dealt with the too-macho hero because I liked the heroine, but the age gap was hard enough without a SURPRISE PREGNANCY THROWN IN. I briefly skimmed after that point, but that’s a hard no from me dawg.
Read as part of the Team Player Anthology, and my first taste of Mandi Beck's writing and it won't be my last. I liked her writing style, it was well paced, built a storyline, characters were well developed and secondary characters had purpose and depth even for a Novella.
Jason Dagger is a NHL hockey player and trainer for up and coming stars from Fulton University, he is a ladies man and likes to take advantage of a hot woman any chance he gets. Whe he visits the University and see's Stella Cruz he has to have her.
Stella is a talented Softball player and is instantly attracted to Jason Dagger despite the 10 year age gap the night of a formal event see's their chemistry ignite out on the ice. Jason is pure Alpha during their first encounter and this whole scene is HOT and drool worthy! They both knew that this would be a one time thing but fate has other ideas.......
Jason is an Alpha is the bedroom and on the ice but off it when it counts he is a perfect gentleman with a loving family and that is a great mix for the perfect hero in my book. Stella although young has a good head on her shoulder and is a strong independent woman. I loved her determination to succeed and do her best with everything thrown her way, she has fight and is morally grounded and thought her and Jason were the perfect match. The novella rounded out there story well and introduced us to Levi an up and coming Hockey player that is going to be the focus of Sweater Weather and I can't wait to read it!
Cute Novella that packs a lot of steam. The chemistry is off the charts between Stella and Jason. For just a little book, the characters were so developed, I found myself wanting to know more about all of them. Loved it!
This book is about 100 pages, which is the only reason I finished it. Because it’s so short, the author jumps around a lot, and there is no real development.
The way Jason, the MMC, talks about Stella, the FMC, is so gross. When he first sees her, he makes several comments about how hot she is and he hope she’s legal because he wants to fuck her. He goes from making jokes about hoping she’s legal to treating her like shit (after he sleeps with her, of course) because she’s young.
I didn’t mind Stella. I wish she would have made Jason grovel a whole hell of a lot more than she did. She was the most mature one and she was only 20.
As for the age gap, I don’t mind them when they make sense. This one, to me, didn’t make sense Jason could’ve been in his mid-20s instead of 30. The story still would’ve worked and it feels like that age would fit Jason’s personality and maturity more.
So...I didn't like this. I got to the third chapter before giving up. I probably should have stopped after the prologue because I didn't like the main guy's voice at all. I just...ugh. There is no story. They have sex. I am willing to bet that 90% of this is just sex scenes, which is fine, but I need some story behind a book's characters, otherwise it's just porn in (poorly) written format. No thank you.
