In this historical Western by the New York Times –bestselling authors, the legendary sheriff of Tombstone, Arizona, faces the fight of his life.
Tombstone, Arizona, is the most violent town in the west. But now the legendary frontier town has a new kind of sheriff. A rancher, a Ranger, and a Civil War veteran, John Horton Slaughter is a true-life hero. And he’s here to bring Law and Order to the Wild West.
A beautiful woman, a powerful Mexican rancher, and an exotic new breed of cattle come to John Slaughter’s San Bernardino Valley ranch, along with the prospect of making a small fortune. While Slaughter’s men are out keeping the peace in Tombstone, an act of betrayal turns up the heat under his own roof, and a killer is stalking Slaughter’s wealthy Mexican guest.
When Indians raiders attack Slaughter’s ranch, it is only the first shot in a bigger, blazing Arizona bloodbath. The real enemy is coming armed to the teeth, driven by vengeance, and deep into a killing spree that only John Slaughter alone can stop . . .

If you have ever read a Johnstone western I don't have to tell you how good they are. I have never read a bad western by the Johnstone's. And I love the Texas John Slaughter one. And this one is very good. John always takes care of his family and friends no matter how difficult it may be. I look forward to more of these westerns. Thank you, Mrs. Jo, for an awesome read.
Upheavals in the Mexican government one group fighting another. Mercenaries fighting hoping that they will make a lot of money or whatever they can amass for themselves. This particular coup resulted in Mexican land grants. Two partners living together and infidelity rises its ugly head. A flirty wife has a sexual relations with the husband's partner and a birth is the result. One of the partners shots the other in the back, but he doesn't die, so he rises up and shoots the American partner in the back. The American makes it back to the ranchero tells his cheating wife who shoot him and she leaves the ranchero for Mexico City, to shame to return home. She becomes an Army follower washing and cooking for the Mexican Army...you could call her and Army groupie..This story is action action and tainted with vengeances that are so deep it drives men crazy. Great plot very intense human tragedy with deeply crazy characters...hatred so pure that you can feel as you read this western.
I was provided an ARC copy of this book, but truthfully, I'd have bought it! I love all of the Johnstone books and read them as quickly as they come out. My 75 year old Uncle turned me on to them last year and I've been trying to catch up ever since. This story maintains their record of excellent westerns that are also great reads. If you've never read Johnstone, you need to start now!
