Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a key figure of the Bengal Renaissance. He started writing at an early age and by the turn of the century had become a household name in Bengal as a poet, a songwriter, a playwright, an essayist, a short story writer and a novelist. In 1913 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and his verse collection Gitanjali came to be known internationally. His eminence as India's greatest modern poet remains unchallenged to this day.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

রবী ঠাকুরের বইয়ের মেয়েরা চরম ব্যাডঅ্যাজ একেকজন! কী সাংঘাতিক দৃঢ়চিত্ত, চরিত্রের ভিতর কী অদ্ভুত গমগমে এক নিস্তব্ধতা!

আজকের দিনে হলে বলা যায়, এই কাজ করার মানে কি? নিজেই নিজের ক্ষতি করা তো বুদ্ধিমানের কাজ না। কিন্তু, বুদ্ধির মাপযোখ পরের কথা। অভিমানের ভার কী সাংঘাতিক হতে পারে সেটা বিচার কেউ কি করে কখনো?
ছোট্ট বয়সের অশিক্ষিত চন্দরা, যার বাবা নেই, ফিরে যাবার জায়গা তিনগ্রাম দূরের মামাবাড়ি! সে যদি কলঙ্কমুক্ত হয়ে ফিরেও আসতো, ছিদামের কীর্তি মনের গহীনে রেখে বেঁচে থাকতো কীভাবে? বরং সব মাথা পেতে নিয়ে ছিদামকে রিভার্স কার্ড হাতে ধরিয়ে দিয়ে গেলো। ছিদাম ভাইয়ের সাথে সুখে থাকুক। কারণ, ভাই গেলে ভাই পাওয়া যায় না!

সত্যের পাশাপাশি মিথ্যেরও অপ্রতিরোধ্য একটা শক্তি আছে। মিথ্যেও সত্যকে ঢেকে দিয়ে তার প্রলয়ঙ্করী ধ্বংসলীলা দেখাতে পারে। এই গল্পটা ঠিক এমনই। বিষণ্ণ সুন্দর, অথবা বলা যায় শুধু বিষন্নতায় ভরা।

মিথ্যেও অনেক সময় সত্যকে আড়াল করে ফেলতে পারে এই গল্পই তার উদাহরণ।রবীন্দ্রনাথ এর ছোটগল্প মানেই অসাধারণ।
গল্পটি একেবারে হৃদয় ছুঁয়ে গেল। গল্প শেষ হওয়ার পরও এর রেশ রয়ে গেল অনেকটা সময়।

যে দিন একরত্তি বয়সে একটি কালােকোলাে ছােটোখাটো মেয়ে তাহার গােলগাল মুখটি লইয়া খেলার পুতুল ফেলিয়া বাপের ঘর হইতে শ্বশুরঘরে আসি সে দিন রাত্রে শুভলগ্নের সময় আজিকার দিনের কথা কে কল্পনা করিতে পারিত। তাহার বাপ মরিবার সময় এই বলিয়া নিশ্চিন্ত হইয়াছিল যে, যাহা হউক, আমার মেয়েটির একটি সদগতি করিয়া গেলাম।

জেলখানায় ফাঁসির পূর্বে দয়ালু সিভিল সার্জন চন্দরাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করিল, “কাহাকেও দেখিতে ইচ্ছা কর?”

 চন্দরা কহিল, “একবার আমার মাকে দেখিতে চাই।”

 ডাক্তার কহিল, “তােমার স্বামী তােমাকে দেখিতে চায়, তাহাকে কি ডাকিয়া আনিব।”

 চন্দরা কহিল, “মরণ!—”

শাস্তি

চন্দরা যেন এক রূঢ় সমাজের প্রতীক। নারী একাগ্রতা আর সংকল্প তিনি ফুটে তুলেছেন চন্দরার চরিত্রে। ফাঁসিকে যে নারী বরণ করতে পারে মালা মনে করে সে সব পারে। নারীকে ঘন বনের বিরলতা দিয়ে রবীন্দ্রনাথ এঁকেছেন কাঠিন্যময় এক রূপের। নারীর উপর পুরুষের রোষানল যে কতটা তীব্র তা তিনি দেখিয়েছেন। আমি অবাক হয়ে, শুধু ভাবি, চন্দরাকে যখন বলে, তোমার স্বামী দেখা করতে চায় সে বলে মরণ। এতটা হৃদয়গ্রাহী মর্মর ব্যাথা নিয়ে কেউ এমন কথা বলতে পারে।

The plot is unpleasant, but the story is well-written as the author gives vivid descriptions and the characters have psychology and motivations that are frighteningly realistic and possible.
