In Sector One, there is no greater commodity than a witch. Should they be discovered by the hunters, they will suffer one of two fates--both of which end in death--unless they can bring forth an heir for the sector's Regent. The only problem is, the Regent is sterile, and he would sooner exile a Doomed Queen than admit that to himself or anyone else. This is Adira Chovanek's fate. Witch Hunter Alec Kladivo has given Adira just under two weeks to turn herself in and accept her role as the Doomed Queen. And he's spent each and every one of those days trying to convince her it is the right thing to do, and the only hope of saving their sector from extinction. But what happens once he's finally persuaded her, only to find out he'd been mistaken all along?

There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name
By far, the most intriguing aspect of this novel by Rebecca Hamilton is the villain, Dvorak. He is a well-constructed character, filled with sly menace, skill and smarts. Dvorak is the Regent of Sector One, which has been carved out of Central and Eastern Europe. There are 16 different sectors all over the world, which lost contact with one another more than 200 years ago. Each fiefdom was originally controlled by a witch Regent, who used magic and spells to protect his or her sector from Ravagers, the beasts that prey on humans and witches alike. In Sector One, Dvorak's control seems to be waning, and he needs a blood heir to continue the regency. But for various reasons, a series of doomed queens have been found unfit to rule with Dvorak. He needs a talented witch, but they all seem to die.
Alec is Dvorak's top guardsman and the best witch hunter in the sector. His job is to find the next queen. What he finds is a little thief whose sleight of hand draws his attention, and seems almost...magical. Of course, there is attraction between Adira and Alec. However, Alec is also duty bound to provide the next queen and keep the sector safe.
Probably the next best thing about this book is the progression of the story, which is dramatically influenced by the machinations of Dvorak. He is powerful, and Adira is used to hiding. Female witches tend to be short-lived, so they have become an underground sect. Alec knows this, so he gives Adira 13 days to build up her skills, and then he will turn her over to Dvorak. Well, love blossoms in these days, and the story turns more psychological as Alec and Adira battle duty and sacrifice.
I have to admit neither Alec nor Adira clicked with me. Maybe both were more absorbed by the changing circumstances than each other. A lot happens to them, and I expected more wrenching emotion. I think if this book had been about 100 pages longer, that deep feeling could have been explored a little better. The physical description of Sector One could have benefited as well. A map shows the area covering multiple countries, but for some reason it comes off seeming like a fairy tale kingdom with a bordering woods. The juxtaposition just didn't fit. Finally, more attention needed to be paid to explaining the magic; I was confused in the beginning.
The final scenes, however, are twisty and exciting and original, and then marred by a very abrupt ending. Fortunately, I am very interested in reading about other sectors, all written by other authors. This concept should really be interesting since the sectors have had no contact for 200 years and are surely governed very differently. Can't wait to see.
I will be honest, this is the second dystopian book I have read. After the 1st. book I knew I did not care for this type of book. But I guess I was wrong. It takes a good author to change how you feel about a certain type of book. And that's exactly what this author did. This book was action packed and fast paced. The characters were amazing. The storyline was great too. I read it really quick because it was hard to put the book down. I loved the way she wrote the story with paranormal magic and the end of the world. It worked great together. And it also sizzles in the romantic portions of the book. The relationship between Alec and Adira WOW...... I would recommend this book and this author. Wow what a great book.
I was completely captivated from the beginning, the world building was exceptional - I mean, one chapter in, I could see the all thing in front of my eyes. You feel for Adria and want her to be okay. Alec became book boyfriend material just about right away, by showing a mixture of ruthlessness and reluctant compassion that’s just pretty damn hot. So obviously I was impressed from the start but by chapter three, an army wouldn’t have teared me from this book. It’s the hunger games, the selection, games of thrones and spartacus thrown into one and made exponentially better. I need more of this in my life.
4.5 of 5 I love this author’s voice and her solos and collaborations have become automatic one clicks for me. In this story, the heroine (Adira) is a witch in a dystopian society where witches are persecuted and thus she must hide and not use her gifts. Yet the character isn’t angsty, still retains a refreshing sympathy for others despite her own circumstances, and does what needs to be done with a certain elegance. I really loved all the characters though at one point, I wanted to hit the hero (Alec) over the head. You’ll see. :-) Also, everything feels so real…that even if you are not a big dystopian reader, you can enjoy this story and these characters.
Wow, this definitely was a excellent book, with over the top world building and characters. I rarely read dystopian books but this one is in a paranormal setting, written by a killer author, so I of course had to read it. If you like paranormal with a lot of action this is the book to read
A group of authors got together each wrote a book in the world of the Othala Witches. The world has become walled cities known as Sectors. Outside of the walls live the Ravagers, monstrous creatures that hunger for human flesh. In this particular sector, magic is greatly valued since it’s what’s used to power the rune stones that protect the border like an electrified fence. Right now the rune stones are being powered by the regent Devorak, but he needs an heir to take over after him and for that, he needs a wife. Devorak employs magic hunter guards who not only work as security for the city, but they track down women who might possess magic, and bring her to Devorak who puts them into the arena to face a ravager. If the woman defeats the ravager, Devorak marries her and she is given three months to become pregnant. If she fails to become pregnant, she is banished outside the borders to be fed to the ravagers, and the hunt for a new wife begins again. Alec, lead magic hunter, has the task of defeating the ravager each time the woman fails to kill it. And Adira, who lives outside the city walls, not earning enough to eat, has resolved never to be put in the ring, since she knows she has no hope of facing a ravager, and she knows three months is not enough time to conceive a baby, especially when Devorak is probably sterile. But when Alec sees her using magic in the market place to steal food, he captures her to bring to the regent. But the shop owner suggests that Adira be trained first before being turned in to the regent, since she has enough power to save their sector if she can learn to use it properly.
I love this grouping of novels. It’s always interesting the differences each author makes with the Sectors, the regents, the ravagers, and the magic system, and what their dystopian fantasy world is like. I loved both Adira and Alec. Adira is strong in her desperation to both survive and for freedom. And I loved that she grew as a character from being selfish in wanting to live for herself (and doing stupid things at times), to making friends and wanting to help them. And Alec is one of those tough he-men who wants to do everything for the good of the sector, and even though he’s attracted to Adira, he knows she’s the strongest witch he’s seen besides Devorak and the sector needs her. There’s a beautiful romance between them, and yet forbidden since he knows she’s needed to marry the regent. Devorak was a wonderful character, as he tried to hide things. I loved the creepy, lecherous, chauvinistic vibe he gives off and he’s smart, and several steps ahead of the other characters, covering his motivations well. I did love the scenes of Adira learning her magic and moral lessons, and all of the other students there. The ravagers are still rather faceless monsters and not really described all that well. The book did have its problems though. The largest problem seemed to be that people and prisoners were able to sneak in and out of the palace dungeons far too easily (one of them was a kid even). And once they snuck out, they would sneak back in again, which made absolutely no sense (I know, they didn’t want to jeopardize the lives of their friends, but why didn’t they just sneak them out as well?) There was also the problem several character deaths, and suddenly the characters were back to being alive and completely healthy as if nothing had happened, with no real explanations. I never really followed what the Origin spell entailed with Adira never bothering to explain it other than to say that it could repair rune stones. All the hoops Adira went through for the origin spell seemed like too loosely threaded together after a while, like the making of the poison. And it felt like there wasn’t follow through for certain things (like building up the idea of having to face a ravager in the arena, we ended up just bypassing it).
Rebecca Hamilton has managed to do what other authors have not : Make me love a dystopian novel !! She has intertwined enough paranormal magic with the end of the world and still kept it action packed with plenty of sizziling sexy heat 5 ☆'s !!
I liked it! It was well paced and the characters were well defined. Adira and Alec had quite a few bumps in their road to happiness, but overcame them brilliantly!
Origin is a well written book by Rebecca Hamilton. I really enjoyed this book that brings a new spin to the often written about witches, that now sets them in a post apocalyptic environment. This book captivated my attention from the very first page and I actually had a difficult time putting it down. The plot was well developed and thought through with a few well placed twists hidden within. The pace of the book was perfect never dragging the story out nor did the author ever rush me through it! This book has a good amount of action mixed with some romance.
Adira is a very likable character and you can't help but cheer and be on Team Adira! Althoug she may be a thief, she doesn't have it easy and is a stand up character fighting to survive under circumstances that do not favor it! She seems to grow continuously and you can really see how she slowly but surely rises to the occassion and does what it right, even when you think she should just run away and save herself!
Alec is the perfect counterpart to her and is your strong male lead, who slowly but surely learns, that things may not be as they seem. But since he is a true hero, he also does what he can to help set things straight.
There are a few more characters that this story can't do without like Miss Balek and others. All in all I must say this book was a random pick up and quite the pleasant surprise! I can really recommend this to fellow lovers of the paranormal since it is a very well written book that is unique and captivating.
Voluntary review of Advance Reader Copy. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher.
Alec and Adira are on opposite sides in their Sector. Alec is a witch hunter who collects witches for the regent who needs to produce an heir to continue the magical protection of the city. The unfortunate thing is that no witch has survived very long. So when Alec feels a strong connection to Adira he hesitates for the first time in his life. This gives him the time and clarity to see that not everything is as straight forward as he thought.
This was ok. I wasn't crazy about the story or characters but I didn't hate them either. The length definitely helped.
This is the first book I've read in this series, and I must say I NEED to get the others. The way Rebecca Hamilton writes it's magical. I could almost feel the ruins coming to life while reading.
I rooted for the characters the while time. I connected with them and mourned with them. I loved this book, and cannot wait to read more from Rebecca.
Adira is a witch and if the regent finds out she will be forced to marry him and have his child. Alex is a guard for the regent but he finds himself falling for A fire and is torn between duty and love. It was a good story, although there were times when things were explained more than once which slowed it down in places, but overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it.
Rebecca Hamilton did it again! This book has been one of the best books I've read this week. It took me one day to finish it because I couldn't put it down. I loved the main character and the way she faces her future. It kept getting better and better till the end. I highly recommend it to everyone who loves this kind of reading and of course, to all of you who love Rebecca Hamilton's writing.
An interesting addition to Othala series. It was intriguing and kept me on the edge. It would be 5 stars if it hadn't felt a little disjointed in the meantime.
I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!
*A complimentary ecopy was provided, by the Author, in exchange for my honest review.* Origin really exceeded my expectations. Honestly, I don't know what it was I expected. But I love it!! I don't think this book is a novella, aka a shorty, but I did finish it in one day. I thought the whole #dystopian vibe was spot on. Then the Author threw in #magic!! It was magical. So, a little bit about this story...The Sector must find a Queen to mate with the Regent in order to keep the Sector protected, through magic, in order to kept out the Ravagers. Both Regent and Queen have or carry magic. With the current Display proving they are still in search of their Queen, the Regents’ Guard are witch hunters. They capture the Queens, aka witches. Head of the Regent’s guard is Alec, he spotted their next Doomed Queen from a mile away!! She puts up quite a fight, is even brazen, to say the least. However, they both felt that connection to each other. It's why he gave her thirteen days of freedom before he turned her in. Well that and for her to prepare for the Display and the Regent. She basically needs to hone her skills in and learn all she can before her time is up. So the question then becomes, can she do it? Can she save the Sector from the Regent? I'll never tell. What I can tell you is that this story is constantly on the move, it's well written and well worth every ninety-nine pennies I'll spend, since I pre-ordered it. I thought the alternating POV’s give the story more depth. It's not just one sided. And of course, the #magic. The way it read and they way I visualized it, it was beautiful!! If you love you some #ParanormalRomance with #witches & #magic against a #dystopian backdrop, this is the story for you!!
The opening story in the Othala witch collection couldn´t done a better job in attracting reader´s interest and curiosity and create a tempting path to the next books. For Adira, living in Sector one is like a nightmare, denying and hiding her true self from the regent and his horrible laws. Alec is on the other side, serving the regent and enjoying his trust. When they meet, everything starts to change - Adira finds a family and understands the need for certain sacrifices, exploring the depth of her powers; and Alec realizes he might have been living in a bubble of lies and falsehood, believing blindly in sweet and convincing words, understanding the value of a single life. Although th story had a slightly slower pace than the other pieces I have read by the author, there is nothing much to object. The world the protagonists live in is hard and facing probably too many problems, but the atmosphere of the story compensates for more with all its tension and suppressed emotions. Adira, emotionally driven and full of fears, transforms into a capable and srong woman, fearless and dedicated to do what is right regardless the consequences on her own life. Alec, strong and loyal warrior, becomes doubtful and reassesses his values and beliefs in order to become a better human. There are also other lovely characters, like Anastazie, developing their personalities as the story progresses, speeding the whole plot up. The only mark tainting the perfect picture was maybe the conclusion - seemed too sudden to me; I would love to know more. I absolutely LOVED the book and look forward to read the next!
I had really high expectations for this book and it failed pretty much every one of them. I don't even know where to start with the issues I had reading this book. The writing was just plain bad. There were gaps in the timeline, the magic was glossed over and not explained in any detail. The relationships between the characters were non-existent. We're introduced to characters that aren't even fleshed out and we're supposed to believe there's a friendship or bond between any of them. I'm just glad this author didn't write any of the other books in this series, based on this book alone I won't read further.
This is the first book I've read of Rebecca Hamilton, but I can assure you it won't be the last. When I went to looking on my kindle, I noticed I have quite a few of hers. I will be making quick work of reading those next, so stay tuned for more reviews! This book sounded so intriguing. I wasn't sure what to expect. I love how there was over 300 pages to it. There was never a dull moment but I did feel like the whole time frame of 13 days Alec was giving Adira seemed like it could've been told quicker, if that makes sense. I don't want to spoil anything so I'm not sure how to word that. I preordered this and I will say it's money well spent. It is a very complex world, complex as in a good thing, meaning well developed and not some simplistic, fast easy read. Oh how I love to hate the Regent! Why couldn't they gouge his eyes out or something? I felt like the people were so ignorant to follow along like they did. And especially Alec. But isn't that the way it is with all leaderships? People get blinded to what's going on. Especially if it starts at a young age. The demonic like creatures called Ravagers were so scary. I can't even imagine facing one. This is the fate of every queen of sector one so for. All because she can't produce an heir or isn't a witch. It's going to be so exciting to read all the books in this series from different authors. And to see how each sector is set up and what goes on. I hope that we hear more from this sector again.
A dystopian world with witches, magic and "ravagers". Of course their was an "evil" regent and then we have the good guy - Hunky, Cold Hearted, Witch Hunter, right hand to the Regent - Alec.
Alec - lost his whole family to the "ravagers" and the regent took him in and trained him to be the best witch hunter. All the while indoctrinating him with the rules that the regent himself had rewritten to suit his own purposes.
Adira - is a witch and thief. She lost her parents to witch hunters and has no love for the regent either.
The borders of their lands must be kept with magic to keep the "ravagers" trapped and the people of the kingdom safe. Originally set up with 16 different "kingdoms" by 16 powerful witches - but magic is failing and magical blood is losing it's potency. Regent Dvorak has set the tradition of a "doomed" queen - with 2 tests of her powers. 1st she must defeat a "ravager" - then she must marry the Regent and produce an heir - If she fails this last test she is banished to the outerlands outside the magic borders.
I found myself drawn into this world and to the stories woven there. The tension and heat between Adira & Alec was mesmerizing and definitely did not disappoint.
looking forward to revisiting this world with the next installment!
Rebecca does it again. She definitely have some kind of magic in her. It was awesome. Right now I am cursing my limited vocabulary, I am in serious need of new words to express my awe for her story-telling skills. She never fails to amaze me. For past few instances it has been only the magic of her books that brings me out from my reading slump (or in real my laziness).
Origin was fantastic with not a single dull moment. Though there were some typos (which can happen in an ARC) it didn't bother me at all as I was so much engrossed in knowing the fate of the characters of the people of Sector One that my mind could not waste its time to linger on those not so important details.
The only reason I have not given it full 5 stars is: the instant passionate connection between the main characters (love at first sight). I have never understood the concept of love at first sight, for me it has to begin with friendship if not friendship at least some kind of interactions (you know the slow and gradual type). But its just me, I know many who say that love at first sight are real so I don't know. Other than this no other complains :P
I will be eagerly waiting for next part (if there will be one) as I think there are many more stories for sector one and many questions regarding the Othala witches. :)
Adira: an orphaned witch, born of two human parents; a street thief, terrified of being discovered by the regent and becoming his next "queen.". Alec: Chief witch hunter, who carries a mantle of guilt in his shoulders, he's dedicated to finding the next "queen" for the regent. Once Alec finds Adira, his world view shifts in its axis.... Regent Dvorak: an evil, monstrous man who is in control of Sector One. One of the original 16 sectors, he's responsible for the safety and well-being of all who exist there by the use of his magic. A megalomaniac who delights in "testing" his "queens" to prove their worth, by forcing them toface the ravagers; monsters from beyond the border. Alec finds Adira, and must escort her to the regent as the next "queen". But Alec can't force himself to take Adira to the regent; Alec is falling in love... Can Adira and Alec save the sector, their friends and each other, or are they doomed to fail at the hands of the evil, monstrous regent?
Riveting, enthralling, suspense filled... A new world populated with fresh, exciting characters and intricately detailed plotlines. A stand alone masterpiece that fills your senses yet leaves you yearning for more. Rebecca Hamilton has outdone herself; I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.
Look likes this Othala Witch Collection book had piqued my curiosity. The fact that we are going to have more stories about the different sector was truly interesting and put me on attention after the first descriptions. Sector thirteen with Alec and Adira as protagonist was full of action, mystery and intrigue from the beginning of the story. Awakened my interest to know more and read the story non-stop because I want to know the outcome. The storyline had a fast pace and flow with strong and defined main characters. Liked how Alec character was delineated. Seemed real with his inner struggling that was presented all the time along the story. That stimulate me to think about the emotions and the choices the character had. Good that both main characters, Alec and Adira had their own scenes full of action, suspense and emotions. That reaffirmed both were strong, resourceful and determined. Good choice of characters to lead the story. Besides, the reader didn’t get bored and keep expecting more. The sex narrations and the violence was enough for this kind of story. The monsters were scary but not too gross and I was trying to imaging the scenes. Liked the author’s writing style with scenes that appeals to my emotions.
The regent needs a wife who is a witch who can give him a child to take over protecting the sector from the Ravagers. Problem is he is infertile so keeps banishing his wives to be killed rather than admit he has a problem.
Alec is a Hunter who searches for witches for the regent to marry and is looking for the next person. Adira is a witch that that Alec finds but cannot bear to hand her in immediately so gives her 13 days to prepare for the tests she will have as the regent's chosen bride. Alec helps to train her in combat in preparation for handing her in. Will he have the strength to hand her in or will they both give in to the pull between them?
I loved this book and the twists and turns in the story. A couple of times I became quite teary eyed so could definitely sense the emotion in those sections. Definitely recommended.
This is the first book of the Othala Witch series which is a collaboration of some really incredible authors. Although these books are technically stand-alone, it is the journey of each sector freeing themselves from the oppressive rule of their existing regents. Personally, I would enjoy reading these closer together.
All female witches born in Sector One are doomed to be Queen. Alec is the Witch Hunter sworn to bring her in. He gives her thirteen days to prepare before facing a ravager. The victors must marry the Regent and produce an heir.
Love, loss, betrayal and hope, this book has it all. If you like reading in the dystopian genre with a touch of paranormal then look no further, you will definitely enjoy this.
I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Aw Man, it can't be over! That's the first thing that came to mind when I read the last word to this book. Once again we are given a fast paced story filled with intrigue and excitement and still given the chance to get to know the characters. We watch them grow and change as the people around them teach them what family and togetherness and selflessness is all about. We watch them accept their "Destiny", "Fate". We watch them remain loyal until that loyalty is betrayed. We watch as this author takes us to a land and makes us apart of the community as we invest our emotions and imagination fully into her tale from the first page to the last. Is it true that love conquers all or that the good guy always wins? You will have to read it and find out.
This was my introduction to Rebecca Hamilton's writing and I was not disappointed. I didn't know what to expect going into the story and found it to be a mix of paranormal and dystopian fiction. I enjoyed it from first page to the last. The only thing I could have hoped for was for it to be a little bit longer. The world building and descriptions making it easy to imagine what the world is like.
The romance between Adria and Alec builds as they get to know each other and they have respect for and understanding of each other and their strengths. I loved the tease of the restraint Alec shows despite temptation to give while honoring what he believes to be true.
Overall, I loved the book and can't read to read more in this world.
There was a great story line and the characters were great. I really love the aspect of witches and a doomed society. This story brings a lot of things forward that allow you to be immersed in the novel where you constantly want to know what is happening.
While I have nothing bad at all to say about this book, the only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars was because I just feel like I am missing something. Do not ask me what that something is as I am not sure, but who knows, maybe it will be covered in the next book?? :p
Great work again Rebecca, looking forward to more of your books! :)
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
