set during the rule of Richard I (Lionheart), at the end of the 12th century. most Saxon barons have been replaced by Normans.
the location is not in Scotland but in a large forest by the river Don, between Sheffield and Doncaster.

Ivanhoe belongs to one of the few Saxon noble families who have remained independent.

Very hard to read, and I'm sure I missed a lot on this first read through. But the language was beautiful and the story was delightful.
