This was SO dang adorable! I'm so glad I came across this on Netgalley! This manga draws inspiration from the same myth that Annette Marie's Winter Trilogy uses. That realization just made my heart all the happier because I also adore that trilogy.

The drawings were okay. There were moments where I couldn't understand what was going on until I actually stopped and stared at it for a bit. That made the story have quite the stop-and-start for me. Overall it wasn't too annoying and it took very little away from the story being told.

Iori was a fun character! I liked the forwardness and how unsocialized Iori is. He's sweet at all the right times but can also be such a pain in situations that you wouldn't think would even warrant his responses.

Onizuka started off as the second option in a love triangle then became an almost villain and then went back to being a nice guy again. I actually kind of like him and want him to find someone though.

Koharu seemed to be happy just living like and taking the punches. It was only at the end that she made something she wanted happen by going after it. The rest of the time it was mostly things happening to her and her reacting like the 16-year old that she is. Which wasn't bad by any means! It was quite an enjoyable ride and made for an interesting story!

Review for complete series

A Note on Aikawa Saki
If you've read one, you've read them all.
If there's an author who I love and read despite my better judgment, it's Aikawa Saki. I absolutely adore her artwork. However, her plots and characters are virtually all the same and filled with cliches. Knowing all that, I still seem to love each and every one of her works.

Although Koharu's grandmother always claimed to see and be able to heal yokai, Koharu's parents made sure she never believed any of that nonsense. When her grandmother passes away, Koharu remembers the days of her childhood when she used to visit her grandmother. Soon she realises that maybe her grandmother's stories were true, for now, she too can see yokai and is suddenly in the company of the fox yokai Iori who promptly decides to have her as a servant to make use of her newly emerging healing powers.

One of the nicest things about The Fox's Kiss is that it's one of the more different works of Aikawa. Instead of her usual high school romance stories, this one is a fantasy steeped in Japanese mythology. Mind you, it's still set in high school, but that's not the point. The artwork is as gorgeous as usual and here Aikawa proves that she can draw more than just pretty characters; the quirky and often weird yokai are drawn excellently.

In general, Aikawa proves that she can move outside her usual formula. Although I love her romance stories, this one isn't exactly her best shot at it. While it's still a main element of the story, I think it's definitely the fantasy - and, to an extent, humour - that make this a fun read. It's a little episodic and I really enjoy Koharu as a character and how she encounters yokai of different sorts. Iori is an equally fun and loveable character - him being a fox certainly reflects in his personality.

As it is a little episodic, it's a story that could have easily gone on for a few more volumes. It doesn't exactly feel rushed or unsatisfying, but as I was enjoying the plot, I wouldn't have minded a few extra volumes. Perhaps a few extra volumes would have also helped to develop the romance a bit better. Not to say that Koharu and Iori don't make a cute couple - they do - but it would have been nicer if things had moved a bit slower.

The Fox's Kiss is a fun read if you enjoy Japanese mythology, especially if you like some romance and humour on top - not to forget the beautiful art.

Story 4,0/5
Charaktere 4,0/5
Zeichenstil 3,6/5
Gesamt 4,0/5

This definitely feels like a poor man's Kamisama Kiss. That's not entirely a bad thing, but it's not quite as good as the other Saki Aihara series I've read.

Es hat mich zwar sehr an Kamisama Kiss erinnert, war aber dennoch sehr cool und witzig zu lesen. Der mythologische Aspekt punktet bei mir immer :D

5 stars. I haven't squealed over a manga in a long time, but this one brought me back to the same feels I had while reading Black Bird (which I never finished). So good! Review to come.

Okay, so the artwork in this book is beautifully done. The storyline is interesting, to say a demon and a human being are in an engagement together should probably not work. I love her healing powers, and that it works for demons and humans. I can't wait to see where the series goes next.

I received this manga from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

A bit of a mixed bag for me. I am happy I had the chance to read, but I had hoped it was better. I probably won’t be reading the second volume in the series.

Since I am tired/busy/very tired, I have written a good/not so good review featuring all the reasons why I wasn’t a fan or why I was a fan.

OK/GOOD:
😊After the initial eh feelings toward the girl I started to like her more and more. She is a sweet girl who likes helping out people. She doesn’t care if it is an enemy, like the senpai, or good, like the demons she meets. I am also happy that she often stood her ground against Iori and how he acts around her.
😊The demons and their many forms. From oni to gods to foxes to lions, we encounter quite a few different kinds in this manga. I am curious what more demons they will encounter.
😊The artstyle, while it was very samey at points, I also really liked the style and found the eyes especially well done and pretty.
😊The healing powers. Especially since it is used on demons. Something many people may not see as good.
😊I really love the cover!

NOT A FAN:
😬I wasn’t a fan of the girl, at least not at first. How she acted towards her grandma, treating her like she was crazy/weird. And then when her grandma is buried totally not caring and even being bored. WOW….
😬The story was just weirdly choppy at times. I mean, one time she was out with her senpai and the next page we see her bound on a strange place. I really was scratching my head there. There were other parts that just went from x to a in one step. Like the battle with the girl from the shrine, I would have liked a bit more detail on that.
😬How we went from him being rude and mean and calling her a servant and causing all sorts of problems to him declaring she will be his bride… and this was just in one chapter. WTF? That really came out of nowhere and I would have loved to see that written better, more natural. Or well, as natural as you can get with a demonxhuman story. Haha.
😬The engagement ritual itself. Forcing a kiss… sleeping together in one bed.. mark on your body. Wow, consent anyone? Even later he keeps sleeping next to her despite her saying no. She wants privacy and he is all like, oh but we are engaged, no need to be ashamed. Bro, no.
😬I am guessing we are getting a love triangle between Senpai and our fox boy? OH LORD. I am not in for that. Everyone who knows me knows that I HATE love triangles.
😬It was funny (and by that I mean hilariously nope) how both our fox boy and our MC just looked SO SO much like other characters from manga.
😬I would have liked to know more about her powers and why they were just now developing and why grandma didn’t at least leave something behind to help out. She could have known that maybe her granddaughter would get her skills.
😬I did find chapter 3/4 a bit weird, given how she suddenly cares SO SO much about Iori. I mean, she doesn’t want him dead of course, but how emotional she acted stood out to me, especially given she generally feels neutral/frustrated with Iori. I think it would have been better had it been toned down a bit, or maybe had this chapter take place much later in the story. When their connection feels a bit more real.

✰ 2.5 STARS ✰

Unfortunately, I would've rated this one still lower if it wasnt for the gorgeous artwork.

To address the elephant in the room, yes, this does read like a rushed, and if I'm being honest, a very disappointing version of Kamisama Kiss. Which felt even more apparent having read that manga quite recently. Koharu is like a more annoying character with much, much less agency. And Iori - again, I'll be a little blunt here - is like a much blander Tomoe. There are more comparisons that can be done, but I'll stop here.

The premise by itself is interesting, of course. Especially if you're seeing it for the first time. A teenage girl gets caught in the world of spirit demons because of a power she encounters. In this case, the healing powers she got from her grandmother. And her first acquaintance in that world is an attractive fox demon with somewhat questionable behaviors. Now she has to navigate her school life which has become unexpectedly more dangerous as she deals with an unwanted tag-a-long.

The parts that didn't work well in the story was how rushed everything was. And how icky it felt in certain situations because of it. Like, dude, I know you're a fox demon and all, but you need a month long lecture on the word 'consent'. And of course, it ends up being romanticised inspite of the screaming sessions by Koharu because, 'developing feelings'.

If this volume was made into 2 volumes by taking it slower and more consensuallly, by adding a bit more to the story, it would've been so much better. Because, the backbone is there. And the second half went in an interesting direction.

There is a tiny chance that I might read the next couple of volumes. One, like I mentioned before, the artwork is gorgeous. And second, it's on Kindle Unlimited. 😅 Though sadly, a very tiny chance.

Today's post is on The Fox's Kiss, volume 1 by Saki Aikawa. It is 192 pages long, it is the first volume in her The Fox's Kiss series and is published by Akita Publishing Co., Ltd. The cover has the two main characters on it. The intended reader is someone who is likes shojo manga, Japanese lore and very pretty art. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this volume. The story is story from the third person close of the main female character.

From the Kindle Blurb- Koharu discovers that she now has the power to heal demons like her late grandmother did. The overly self-confident fox demon Iori takes a liking to her. The sudden kiss was a ritual of engagement?! What will happen to Koharu now that she has to live with Iori in human form...?!

Review- A very fun, pretty romance manga. I read this manga before it was licensed and I never thought that it would be brought over the US. I was very surprised and pleased to have found it on Amazon. It has some similar themes to other supernatural romance manga, like Kamisama Kiss, but I think that it is different enough to stand on its own merits. Koharu, after the death of her grandmother, can see and heal yokai. The first one she meets is a very handsome fox yokai who decides that she should be his servant. From here we have the basic story. I really like the characters, I like that Koharu is a healer, not weak but uses that to make her life easier like helping weaker yokai who then become her friends, I like the light romance, and Iori is funny. I am very excited to finally get to read the whole series.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Another one of those 'let's start hating each other to then fall in love with each other' 'shojo' manga, "The Fox's Kiss" is an acceptable effort that, nonetheless, fall shorts in the originality department, meaning that it doesn't have anything special to make it stand out of the pack.

What we have here is your typical 'full-of-himself-but-really-soft-inside' masculine character (which in this case is a fox demon) and your female 'I-just-wanna-fall-in-love' one. If you like this kind of stores, "The Fox's Kiss" seems (by this its first volume) to be able to fulfill that desire. However, for me, it just felt stale: how many male characters can go around treating the female as a servant (even if it is just a plot development to show that she is playing a role in them changing their personality?; not that this recourse is a good one at all). And how many female characters can you have actually falling for this kind of 'bad boy' type? It reinforces silly stereotypes and I will never understand why so many 'shojo' manga artists (readers) seem to like this kind of possessive, dominant, mean male characters. Even if, like in this case, the characters are enjoyable enough (the relationship seems to be evolving quite fast, though).

The art style, even if simple and following also the 'shojo' standards, is cute and expressive (some strips are a little bit simple).

A pity the 'love' story offers so little, because the background (demons, powers, etc.) could make this a very entertaining manga.

The best: its world

The worst: the 'love' relationship and its stereotypes

5/10

I am on a huge manga kick right now and this one was AWESOME to me. I really go for the romance-y ones, Shojo for the win! I could feel the connection between the characters and it wasn't too OTT for me, though that is what I like to read, so take that with a grain of salt.

I am NOT an expert on manga by any stretch of the imagination, so while this was published in 2017, as per NetGalley, I just heard about it and read it now. Which is GREAT, because I shouldn't have to wait for the next volumes, I can order them and read what is out now. I hate starting a new series and having to wait SO LONG for the next book and then the next and the next. So this dodges that issue for me nicely.

Definitely one I will be recommending at the store for sure. 5, we all need a powerful fox demon in our lives, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Akita Publishing Co., Ltd. for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

So the instant I saw this my immediate thought was Kami-sama Kiss, enough so that I thought for a moment this was Kami-sama Kiss but branded differently. It's not quite, having read the whole volume it feels like it is pulling from Anime's like Inuyasha and Fruits Basket. (The love Triangle is evident within the first chapter.)

Whoever did the localization could have done better; a line that exists no joke is: "oh don't scare me, person! " I had to put by phone down and then come back to make sure I read it correctly.

I don't think I will follow up with this Manga, it seems to be a Monster of The Week Manga, with the Love Triangle being shoved in your face constantly. I suppose there is the potential that it could a reverse harem, but the lack of actual plot doesn't make me want to dig in deeper.

kitsunes are one of my favorite creatures in Japanese mythology so i was super excited to read this ARC. thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for approving my request to view this title.

this was a very cute shoujo manga about a human girl with the power to heal youkai and the kistune she saved. i really found iori and koharu's interactions really cute though i thought that the kiss and the romance thing happened too fast. it's still the first volume so i think i'll wait and see where this goes from here.

so far this is very interesting and i love to see the different creatures of japanese mythology and koharu and iori's shenanigans together. the art is typical for the era it was published it (circa 2012-ish) and i found this pretty nostalgic.

all in all, i think i'll stay around to read more of this~

I received a free eARC from the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Fox's Kiss is a fun paranormal romance manga featuring a girl who can heal demons, and a grumpy fox demon who takes an interest in her.

As this is the first in the series, most of it feels like it's setting up for the real story to begin. We meet the main cast; Koharu, who has mystical healing powers; Iori, a fox demon; and Onizuka senpai, who is more than he seems; and we get to know them and the dynamics between them. There are also plenty of demons and gods and priestesses.

The artwork was lovely, and while the premise feels like a riff on manga I've read before, I'm still interested to see where the story goes (because I'm trash for this particular kind of story.)

It reminds me of Inu Yasha and Kamisama Kiss, so if you liked either of those, you may enjoy this manga.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eARC to review.

The art on the inside is better than the cover in my opinion. The story is very basic and feels like it was inspired by Inu Yasha but not done well in execution and the main two characters are very annoying in my opinion. Maybe it would come across better in an anime rather than a manga? I had to DNF this about 3/4s the way through.

First, I have to say that this so much like Kamisama Kiss! Certain things are different, but so much is similar. While saying that, I did enjoy most of this! I like the characters and the humor here. Iori is cool and all, but he's no Tomoe.

I am going to continue reading this, I just really need to try and not point out the similarities.
