Woman In Love: A Hope That Transforms

Rate this book
It was the night before her wedding and Katie knew that the next time she saw her husband-to-be he would be standing at the end of a long aisle. The rehearsal dinner was over and the bride and groom stole a few moments together; their last before they became one. Katie handed Mark a gift that she had been preparing for him since high school; a binder of letters to her future spouse. The pages within were eager to reveal the secrets of a love that began years before the couple had ever laid eyes on one another. Join in the story of a woman in love, and be transformed in the process. Katie will guide you as you begin to write letters to your husband-to-be (HTB) and dive into a life of prayer asking for his sanctification. Become spiritually united with your future spouse as you prepare to fall in love with him in the future. I read this as an impressionable middle/high schooler. Katie Hartfiel has a beautiful testimony of her journey to marriage, and conveys the truth and beauty of the Church's teachings on sexuality. However, there are instances of harmful purity culture that come through these pages (the "damaged" gift analogy, for instance), and if it wasn't from this book, then I heard it from a talk that was connected to this book.

I would caution young women who read this that while it is not wrong to pray for your future husband, such a practice should NOT be the center of your prayer, as the idea of this person will become an idol. The center of your prayer should be Jesus Christ, not a person who may or may not be in your future. God does not promise everyone a spouse, and not everyone can or will get married. I'm not saying this is Hartfiel's intentions at all, but the belief of getting a "fairytale" ending if one prays hard enough and "follows all the rules" can be a temptation that may end in spiritually and emotionally devastating ways.

Yes, be chaste. Yes, follow the precepts of the Church regarding sexuality. It is God's will, and it will be more fulfilling than a life of unchastity. But even if God does not fulfill your desire to marry, is He still good? The answer to that will be your test of faith. (And spoiler, yes He is still good.)

This is one of the sweetest reads I have ever seen about how to love you HTB (husband to be) before you ever meet him. Hartfiel uses her incredible loving story to illustrate for her readers how we can also have God-centered, ultra fulfilling marriages and love lives...and it may all start with writing love letters to your husband before he’s even in your picture.
