Some nasty imaginary creatures have just escaped into the real world, and it’s an emergency! Bobbie and her friends must take on unicorns, farting spiders, a giant nightmare squid, and a scary Viking bounty hunter who is determined to land the whole gang in Trans-Dimensional prison.
But Bobbie will learn that sometimes the things that scare us most aren't actually so terrifying once you've faced them.
This zany, laugh-out-loud sequel packed with comic illustrations is sure to have kids laughing!
Bobbie Mendoza has already saved the world once, (as recounted in a previous book), and now she just wants to settle down and be secretly special but otherwise normal. No chance of that happening.
The book starts off so frantic and disjointed and manic that I was almost tempted to abandon it. You get page after page of crazy stuff, punctuated by Bobbie kvetching that all she really wants is to be normal and to avoid the craziness. I got that, but it went on and on. If she was going to whine and complain while being dragged through the adventure, well, I wasn't sure I wanted to be dragged through it with her. BUT WAIT. Even early on there are enough funny lines and clever bits, and enough energetic very funny drawings, that you want the book to settle down and go somewhere. And it does.
Soon, Bobbie is joined by her crazy Uncle Dale, (the one who goes to the alien abduction support group), she gets attached to a nerdy classmate who clearly has hero potential, she gets dragooned by two elves with ulterior motives, and she gets chased by unicorns through a trans-dimensional portal. At this point we get an actual plot, and start moving on a quest/adventure that makes sense and unfolds clearly. The adventure makes sense, unfolds crisply, is funny and well paced, and makes a few nice points about fear, friendship and bravery.
But the real appeal is the edgy humor and way, way above average wordplay, as well as non-stop clever deadpan throwaway lines. The book manages to goof on middle grade books and fantasies without ever being mean. It spins out dead-on takedowns of teachers, Las Vegas, other book plots, Vikings, dumb monsters, villains, and pretty much everything else you've ever found in any other middle grade comedy adventure. This is smart stuff. Bobbie is a cool cucumber, but everyone gets some good lines. Lots of running jokes keep the tale moving at a feverish pace. There is everything from "Airplane" humor, ("Don't call me Shirley."), to witty cross-talk, puns, and wordplay.
All of this is enhanced by pencil drawings that emphasize the action and some of the punchlines, and make it especially easy for a younger reader to follow the action.
And while it's hard to fit a lot of character development into a book like this, Bobbie actually emerges as an engaging and appealing heroine, with a bit more heft and depth than you would ever expect.
So, after a bumpy takeoff this book really soared and it ended being an entertaining and sort of impressive flight. A happy find.
(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Bobbie Mendoza Saves the World (Again) follows 12-year-old Bobbie as she runs from bounty hunters, escapes from evil gnomes, and bravely fights mummies and zombies.
In another book, Bobbie saved Christmas from ghosts. I did not read that book but there were a lot of references to it in this one.
My favorite part was when Uncle Dale saved Loraine the Bounty Hunter from falling to her death because everyone was surprised he actually did something useful and smart. I just find it very funny.
I also like the idea that unicorn horns can put you to sleep.
I got this book thinking it would be longer or more advanced, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Another one of my favorite moments was when we figured out that Grumpus, an evil gnome, was seeking revenge on kids who had tortured him when he was a lawn ornament.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a very fast-paced book that they can read within a few hours. It is extremely funny, so if you want a comedy book, this is for you.
When imaginary creatures are released into the real world, it's up to Bobbie Mendoza to save the day. Bobbie faces a unicorn stampede and manages to ride one named Senorita Sparkles straight into the locker. The locker is actually a portal into another dimension, which is so unreal that it almost feels like a dream, but Bobbie is wide awake.
Bobbie and her friends are off on a whirlwind adventure. They find themselves all over the place, like the Bermuda Triangle, Mermaid Island, Las Vegas, and more! She faces all kinds of nightmares, but pushes through it all.
BOBBIE MENDOZA SAVES THE WORLD AGAIN is a fast-paced novel with lots of humor. It reminded me of DIARY OF A WIMPY KID. I love the doodles and notebook like feel to it. This story picks up quickly and keeps your attention, which is perfect for middle graders.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of humor, adventure, notebook doodles, and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID.
What a great series! This was the perfect sequel. The characters I loved in the first one are back with some new, fun additions. This is a great series for kiddos who like graphic novels, but are starting to get into more traditional young reader novels. Can't wait to read a third one if it comes out.
Super cute story. I read this with my 10 year old and 6 year old who both enjoyed it. It had some funny jokes which made them like it even more. The underlying message of it’s ok to be whatever you, you choose and there is nothing wrong with being different was great for them too as well as recognizing they control their own fear, which was explained in a kid friendly manner.
Great book. Better than the first one (Naughty List). Lots of fun stuff. Giant Dream Squids. Fez wearing elves. Evil gnome. Viking Bounty Hunter Lady. Happy reading!

As can be implied from the title, Bobbie Mendoza Saves the World (Again) is the follow-up to an earlier appearance of the titular character in The Naughty List. One does not need to have read The Naughty List to understand what happened to Bobbie since this book does a pretty good—if not too thorough—re-telling of the events of the first book that would eventually lead her to save the world (again). While I’m sure the previous book was focused on Christmas-related shenanigans, this book opens up the potential for weird, random, and bizarre via the same inter-dimensional portals used previously.
I will say that I was impressed with this book’s ability to seamlessly intertwine verbal narrative with accompanying pictures. It’s not quite a picture-book, but it’s also not a chapter book either. It’s a hybrid of the two. While I’m assuming the illustrations will be a little more polished for the final release (I was given an advanced reader copy to review), the drawings still conveyed the necessary information in a rough and squiggly way that seemed to work well for the type of plot presented here.
Intended for kids in grades 3 through 7, Bobbie Mendoza Saves the World (Again) pulls out all the stops when it comes to the randomness of its comedy. From unicorns to dinosaurs to elves, the silliness of the situations will probably make most children laugh. Parts felt a little immature for 7th-graders, but other sections had words and concepts that were perhaps a little too complicated for 3rd-graders. I’d probably say that this book would be appropriate for grades 4 through 6. Parents might have to suffer through the fart jokes and random plot points (without a strong main point or lesson behind them), but at least it’s a somewhat entertaining book to read.
A book filled with the “random” comedy that appeals to kids, I give Bobbie Mendoza Saves the World (Again) 3.5 stars out of 5. 1/2
I really liked this book. Ok, so my grandpa is a cartoonist (he writes/draws Drabble) and he went to this cartoonist convention. While he was there, he got this book for me (he even got it signed, Michael and Bradley, it’s me, Surrey) anyways he gave it to me, and I was like oh cool, I’m excited to read it. And guess what? This book turned out so much better than I expected. It’s a sequel to this book called “the naughty list” (I haven’t read that one). This book is about a 12 year old girl named Bobbie, and she re-encounters these two elves named Phil and Gumdrop. They need her help. Read this book to see what they need help with and why in this amazing, fantasy and action packed book!
