A Killer's Alibi

Rate this book
For attorney Mick McFarland, the evidence is damning. And so are the family secrets in this twisty legal thriller from the Amazon Charts bestselling author of A Criminal Defense.

When crime lord Jimmy Nunzio is caught, knife in hand, over the body of his daughter's lover and his own archenemy, he turns to Mick McFarland to take up his defense. Usually the courtroom puppeteer, McFarland quickly finds himself at the end of Nunzio's strings. Struggling to find grounds for a not-guilty verdict on behalf of a well-known killer, Mick is hamstrung by Nunzio's refusal to tell him what really happened.

On the other side of the law, Mick's wife, Piper, is working to free Darlene Dowd, a young woman sentenced to life in prison for her sexually abusive father's violent death. But the jury that convicted Darlene heard only part of the truth, and Piper will do anything to reveal the rest and prove Darlene's innocence.

As Mick finds himself in the middle of a mob war, Piper delves deeper into Darlene's past. Both will discover dark secrets that link these fathers and daughters--some that protect, some that destroy, and some that can't stay hidden forever. No matter the risk.

William L. Myers, Jr. is the No. 6 best-selling author on Amazon Kindle in 2017 for his debut novel, A Criminal Defense. That was the first in what has become the Philadelphia Legal Series. The third book in that series, A Killers Alibi debuted earlier this year.
A Killer’s Alibi has had rave early reviews including New York Times Bestselling author, Bill Lasher—

“William Myers’ riveting new novel is not just a crackerjack legal thriller, it is a wrenching portrayal of a whole range of farther-daughter relations, showing how they can damage, how they can nourish, how they go dangerously off track. A story not to be missed.”

Born in 1958 into a blue-collar family, Mr. Myers inherited a work-ethic that propelled him through college and into the Ivy League at The University of Pennsylvania School of Law. From there, Mr. Myers started his legal career in a Philadelphia-based mega defense firm. After ten years defending corporate America, he realized his heart wasn’t in it. So, with his career on the fast track to success--he gave it all up and started his own firm. It was time to start fighting for the common guy.
That was twenty-five years ago and since then, he has focused on representing railroad employees and other honest, hard-working people who have been injured by others. He has represented thousands of clients in his tenure and has become a highly-regarded litigation attorney up and down the Eastern Seaboard.

A scorching legal thriller, William L Myers Jnr has come up with a more than worthy follow up to his first two books in this, the third, of the Philadelphia Legal series.

In this book lawyer Mick McFarland finds himself representing mob boss Jimmy Nunzio (aka Jimmy Nutso) after he is caught red handed with a knife in his hand, and his daughter's boyfriend dead on the floor with a slashed throat. The problem is the boyfriend was from a rival mob, so a mob war is imminent, and Mick finds himself caught up in the middle of it.

Mick soon finds himself as a puppet to the Nunzio clan, trying to prepare a defense, yet the family will not let him be privy to the whole story, that he'll find out what their defense will be when he needs to know. As the trial creeps closer, and Mick is still in the dark, we feel his anxiety. And then the rival clan prepares to strike...

A Killer's Alibi is a first class thriller, quickly building momentum, until the shattering crescendo in the courtroom, when all is finally revealed. Or is it? You'll find yourself racing through this one, trying to figure out what really happened on that fateful night, waiting for the twist, and when it comes you'll find yourself smiling with satisfaction. I recommend this book to all lovers of legal thrillers.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 Stars— I guess I am officially a fan of William Myers now, as this is the 3rd book in the Philadelphia Legal series I have read. This one falls squarely in the middle as far as how I rank them with “A Criminal Defense” being my favorite and “An Engineered Injustice” being my least favorite. “A Killer’s Alibi” once again tells the story through the eyes of Mick, a successful Philadelphia criminal defense lawyer who is retained to defend notorious mobster and return character Jimmy “Nutzo” Nunzio. Nutzo appears to be caught dead to right after he is found with a knife and gun and covered in blood while standing by the body of his daughter’s boyfriend, a mobster from a different crime family. The book is fast paced and has so many characters that it is hard at times to keep up with them all. I enjoy the central characters and their storyline but the majority of the story in this case revolves around the mob and their disputes. It is very hard for me to relate to these characters where they murder at the drop of the hat and become very predictable because of this. The courtroom finale is also good but It is hard to root for a character when they represent the scum of the earth and Mick has shown a willingness to do anything to win in court. If Myers will leave out the unlikeable mob guys in his next effort I truly think he will be one of the best legal thriller writers out there.

Published and well-worth a look!

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, William L. Myers Jr., and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

The reader can be assured of a well-developed legal thriller when William L. Myers Jr. is at the helm. His attention to detail and captivating stories keep the story enthralling until the final pages, and this book is no exception. When James ‘Jimmy’ Nunzio is found in a warehouse, holding a bloody knife with a body on the floor, there appears to be little doubt that he is to blame. A high-ranking official in a Philadelphia organized crime family, Nunzio has a long list of beefs, including a rival New York family, to whom the victim belongs. When Mick McFarland is called upon to serve as defence counsel, he is hesitant, though intrigued all the same. McFarland interviews his client, but is left feeling as though there is something missing from the story and Nunzio remains coy about certain aspects of that night, promising to reveal all in good time. Meanwhile, Mick’s wife and other law partner are involved in some Innocence Project Work. Darlene Dowd was convicted of murdering her abusive father years ago, but a deathbed letter from her own mother reveals that a neighbour may have some important evidence and the murder weapon. Piper McFarland and Susan Klein begin to explore this new evidence, in hopes of being able to free Darlene once and for all. With the help of the firm’s investigator, Piper and Susan learn that there is more to the story than an abused teenaged girl who resented her father’s actions and took justice into her own hands. While Mick is trying to plan for his own trial, he discovers that he may have taken on more than he can handle, placing himself and all those around him in a mafia squabble that can only end in bloodshed. Learning of an intended payback, Mick must do all he can to get to the bottom of this case—including this mystery evidence the defendant is holding—before more innocent people suffer the consequences. A powerful story, with great courtroom action, that does not relent until the final paragraph, Myers shows why he belongs at the top of his genre. Highly recommended for those who love substantive legal thrillers that seek not only to tell a story, but offer realistic characters to add depth.

I can remember stumbling upon Myers’ first novel and being fully engrossed. This was a story that had both substantial legal arguments and characters who were more than simply vessels to pull the narrative along. Myers has taken the time to flesh-out his characters and injects personal attributes to which the reader can surely relate. Mick McFarland is a wonderful father and husband, as well as an accomplished lawyer who does not shy away from controversy. While his mind does seek loopholes, he is not afraid to work or to spend time trying to help his clients, no matter their circumstances. His passion for the law and those around him can be seen throughout and he proves to be a wonderful protagonist sure to anchor this series for years to come. Other returning characters offer their own distinct flavours and propel the story forward at break-neck speed. The attentive reader will see some of the smaller characteristics that Myers injects to keep the story light, but not superficial. This helps keep things from getting stale or overly burdensome. Dealing with both sexual abuse and family blood feuds cannot be easy, though Myers tackles both and presents wonderful spins. There is a delicate balance that Myers has found, one the attentive reader will see as they progress through this novel. The story is strong and reads well, mixing light banter with serious legal arguments, as well as some personal subplots some of the characters must face. Myers has a way of writing in which chapters seem to melt away, though he does not shortchange with detail or plot development. Anyone new to Myers should probably start at the beginning of the series—more to learn of the character and plot developments from their infancy—though I suppose this book could act as a standalone. Speaking of that, this book does stand apart from others in its genre and William L. Myers Jr. should be an author with whom readers familiarize themselves. It is worth the time and effort!

Kudos, Mr. Myers, for another winner. I am pleased to have been able to experience an advance copy of this book, as it allows me to drum up additional support ahead of publication.

Favorite Quotes:

If you’re suggesting he agree to be conscripted into witness protection, I just don’t see Jimmy Nunzio letting you move him to Iowa to sell fire insurance.

I don’t need to spend any time thinking about him. He does enough thinking about himself for all of us.

I never met people who could talk so much without saying anything. It felt like they were blowing words into the air to fill up the space between us.

Mick can tell he’s having a good time dragging out the tale. “I feel like a marlin... You’re pulling me in, letting me out, pulling me in.”

He couldn’t incite the Philadelphia jury any more skillfully than if he flashed pictures of Nunzio urinating on the Rocky statue.

My Review:

A Killer’s Alibi was an active and compelling read with a near constant series of surprising twists and turns before culminating into an ending I never saw coming. It was ingenious, devilishly clever, and tautly written. This was my first exposure to the talented word skills of William L. Myers, Jr. and I was awed by his devious plotting and compelling storytelling. The complex storylines were maddeningly paced, skillfully crafted, and involved two separate investigations and trials employing the same law firm, each with myriad conundrums and laced with tetchy witnesses who seemed incapable of giving a straight answer. I devised and cast off a notebook full of theories but would never have arrived at the final conclusion. It was stellar.

Crime Lord Jimmy Nunzio is caught, literally red handed, with the knife in his hands over the dead body of his daughters lover. He quickly hires Mick McFarland to defend him. But Nunzio is staying tight lipped, refusing to tell Mick what really happened. Meanwhile, Mick's wife, Piper is trying to free Darlene David, a young woman who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her sexually abusive father.

It feels like a lifetime that I have waited to read the third instalment of the Philadelphia Legal series, but boy, it was definitely worth the wait. I would also say that this is the best book in the series so far. Myers writes with an intricately to detail. The plot is full of many twists that I never saw coming. The two storylines complimented each other and we're both believable as we're all the characters. The best bits by far is the courtrooms drams. The tension builds as the drams unfolds. The book caught my attention straight away and I did not want to put this book down. This is one hell of a roller coaster ride. I'm don't know how the author is going to top this novel, but I'm sure, somehow, he will.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and the author William L Myers Jr for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

An intriguing legal thriller with an outstanding plot and excellent characters!! I was very excited when I read the first book by this author,it was so very good I could not believe it was his first novel!! This is the third book and it surpasses the others, with intense legal intricacies and emotional relationships that develop as Attorney Mick McFarland ,his wife Piper and partners attempt to find a common ground to assist their clients.
The characters are realistic, you quickly feel you know each one and that you, yourself are a part of the story.. It is so very interesting learning all parts of a community- mobsters,politicians,next-door-neighbors and friends- that are affected by or stick themselves into the legal process after the crime is committed. I was on the edge of my seat as Mick's 'Mob' client gathers his family to decide his story. Suspenseful, with so many twists you will keep reading to find out what happens!!
A fantastically written story engaging your intelligence and imagination, with strong legal arguments but also soft light-hearted moments that maintain the story as real, happening now!
I thank NetGalley and author William L.Myers Jr. for my chance to read an ARC of this exciting story, and I put my thoughts in this review hoping others will be interested and grab this book!

If you love crime-solving mysteries, Law & Order, and/or The Godfather, then this is the book for you! Besides the beginning (which could have been just me caught up on names), this book is very fast paced. Once I got past the name overload at the beginning, I was completely immersed and stayed up until 4am to finish.

The plot: A mobster is charged with murdering the son of a rival mobster. So of course, you have crime families and war. This mobster needs a lawyer, so he hires our main man, Mick, and tells him nothing. Mick has to prepare for a trial when he has no idea what happened because Jimmy refuses to tell him anything. I found this whole situation hilarious and laughed out loud quite a few times as the power struggle between the two continued.

The other plot: So, at the beginning, I was way more interested in this plot. The lawyers have this innocence project going on where they take up cases of people who have been wrongly convicted and help clear their name and get the released. Great. Love the idea. (Can we get more books like this please?) The current case is one of Darlene who was convicted of murdering her rapist/abuser/father. New evidence has emerged that could prove Darlene’s innocence, and so the lawyers have taken up interviewing everyone in the town to prepare for her trial.

So, let’s talk about this name overload thing: everyone has a name, their friends have names, the most minor of people have names.
Example: “Eight are with him at the table. His three best friends: Vinny Itri, Dominic Ricci, and Geno Moretti. Four guys who work for his farther: Bruno, Dave, Tomasino, . . .”
I read over that paragraph about four times trying to commit those names to memory because I thought they would be important to know, but it didn’t matter. Even the dog had a name. IT WAS ALL JUST TOO MUCH! Now MAYBE the names are not an overload to people who have read books 1&2 before this book, but this was just too much for me. I could have really used a guide when reading to remind me the names of people.

So overall, 4 out of 5. There were a lot of characters and I feel that none of them were developed enough for me to really identify with. I mean I liked, the main mobster. He was developed, but I didn’t really seem to connect with any of the lawyers, but that could be because I have not read books 1&2. I don’t know what I’m missing.

The book opens with a prologue in which the reader witnesses a dramatic and shocking event, the consequences of which will only become apparent later in the book.

I liked the way the book alternates between the two story lines – Mick McFarland’s defence of mob boss, Jimmy Nunzio and the attempts of Mick’s wife, Piper, to prove the innocence of convicted killer, Darlene Dowd. Needless to say, the progress of neither investigation runs smoothly and both Mick and Piper are forced to confront the consequences of what they have taken on and face difficult moral dilemmas. And, of course, things are not always exactly what they seem...

As events unfold, readers (as I did) will no doubt find themselves making connections and finding common themes between the two storylines. That is especially true in the final few paragraphs. The plot positively zips along, with plenty of twists and turns. This reader certainly found herself reading long after she’d intended to put the book down for the night.

The author chooses to give the reader an insight into the inner thoughts of the manipulative and ruthless Jimmy Nunzio and I have to say it is a chilling experience but at the same time totally compelling. Unfortunately, nasty people tend to have other nasty people around them and that’s certainly the case here. Plus it’s always worth remembering Rudyard Kipling’s words ‘For the female of the species is more deadly than the male’.

Given the author’s profession, it’s no surprise that the book is full of precise and convincing details about police, investigatory, legal and prison procedures (although a little less detail about Philadelphia’s road system would have been okay with me). The final scenes in the courtroom as Jimmy Nunzio stands trial are convincingly realistic and I was fascinated by the sections covering the process of jury selection. Who knew there was such a thing as a jury consultant or shadow juries?

Although there are references to events in the two earlier books, A Killer’s Alibi works perfectly well as a standalone. In fact, the author cleverly gives just enough information about the events in A Criminal Defense and An Engineered Injustice to tease but not to spoil. It’s clear many of the characters are still working through in their own minds the consequences of the actions and decisions they took or were forced to take. Secrets don’t tend to stay buried forever, after all.

I really enjoyed A Killer’s Alibi. It’s a fast-moving, intricately plotted and compelling crime thriller.

This is the third book in a series, I absolutely loved both A Criminal Defense and An Engineered Injustice and I highly recommend them, especially if you like legal thrillers. As much as I loved the first two books, this was my favorite, it’s one of those rare series that just keeps getting better with each book and this one had me riveted the entire time.
The best thing about Myers books for me is how intricately planned they are, there is a meticulous attention to detail that always wows me and the plot was full of so many insanely good twists and turns I was blown away. On top of an amazing storyline full of mobsters, politicians, cops, lawyers and judges, you also have a core group of characters that are complex and interesting. Besides the main focus with Mick’s trial, you have a separate plot thread with his wife Piper and his law partner Susan where they’re working on an innocence project trying to get a wrongly accused woman out of jail. So much going on here, but it all flows perfectly together and if anything, only serves to propel the story forward and keep the reader engaged.
I know some people are hesitant when it comes to diving into a legal thriller worried that maybe the terminology and scenes inside the courtroom may be boring or over their head, but honestly the courtroom scenes in this were some of the strongest parts of the book for me so let me reassure you that these are incredibly well written and exciting to read. Myers creates a palpable tension like no other, I find myself racing through to find out what will happen next and desperate to know if he’ll manage to trick me yet again. Umm the answer to that is YES! He delivered another series of jaw dropping twists that totally blew my mind, did not see them coming from a mile away and honestly, I shouldn’t be surprised because he’s stunned me with every book in the Philadelphia Legal series and I’m quite sure he will continue to do so.

I still don't know how i feel about Mick and Piper after book one. After this book lets throw Susan into the mix.
Mick, Piper, and Susan belong on the Vanderpump Rules.
Their genitalia lack a morale compass.
The only person that has a soul is Tommy. Who is a convicted felon. Not to mention that he committed patricide. That's how morally bankrupt the rest of the crew is.
I trust the mafia don Jimmy Nunzio over his defense team and the prosecutor.
Anyway i'll get off my moral high horse.

A well written story where the line between the good guy and the bad guy is difficult to see. Another morality lecture. Sorry.

4.5*
The story opens with a shocking prologue as twelve year old Jimmy Nunzio is initiated into the family ‘firm.’ Twenty some years later mob boss, Jimmy Nunzio is caught knife in hand and covered in blood, a body at his feet and his daughter weeping over her dead boyfriend. Mick McFarland is hired to represent Nunzio as his defence counsel and, although he has mixed feelings, after talking to his client he feels pressured to accept despite the fact Nunzio refuses to explain what actually happened.

Running alongside the Nunzio trial is another separate case taken on by Mick’s wife, Piper, and his law firm partner Susan Klein. They are working on innocence cases—trying to get a retrial for people who they believe are wrongly imprisoned. Darlene Dowd was convicted fifteen years ago, when she was nineteen, of murdering her sexually abusive father. Now a deathbed letter from Darlene’s mother could help prove her innocence. A witness had come forward at the time with information that would help to prove Darlene couldn’t have committed the crime, but had been scared off by the then police chief.

Parallels run through both cases, namely the relationships between fathers and daughters, although the actual events bear no resemblance to each other. Throughout the two threads, believable as they are, nothing is quite as it seems with a twisty storyline ensuring the reader is kept guessing along with Mick.

Although this is the third book in the series, for the most part it can be read as a standalone. There are certain references to events in the previous books which play a small part in the overall story; they did leave me wondering what had happened and how much impact they had on the present as the characters themselves still seem to be dealing with the fallout.

A Killer’s Alibi is extremely well written with great characterisations and attention to detail, as well as brilliant courtroom scenes. The fact that Mick is kept more or less in the dark along with the reader adds to the tension and uncertainty of what really happened that night in the warehouse and how events will unfold. A terrific legal thriller … and I need to add the first two books to my list.

I chose to read and review A Killer’s Alibi courtesy of a digital copy of the book kindly supplied by the author via NetGalley.

My Blog

A Killer’s Alibi by William L. Myers Jr. is a truly addictive legal thriller.
From the start, the author plunged me into his ingeniously crafted fiction. I absolutely did not want to stop reading. Consequently, I finished this book in three days straight. The fast pace of the narrative helped too.

Anchored with perfect words, the characters—the protagonists as well as the supporting ones—effortlessly carried the burden of the plot. I could empathize with Mick’s helplessness. He could only grasp at straws as his client refused to speak. Piper came across as a strong, supportive, and a diligent woman who worked hard to free Darlene.

However, I liked Jimmy Nunzio the best. After such a long time, I have had the pleasure to read an unforgettable villain. The way he ascended the throne of the mob family, his internal conflicts, and their resultant outcomes made it a treat for me to read this book. I loved the portrayal of the mob, their inner dynamics, the crossings, and the double-crossings. All of these were skillfully interwoven with the narrative. There are several other characters here; however, William L. Myers’ expert handling doesn’t result in a hotchpotch of the narrative.

Coming to the plot twists, I will admit that I saw the biggest one coming a mile away. However, the way the author led me up to it was fantastic. As a result, I was still blown away by the climax. The story flows smoothly and is taut with suspense. Moreover, William L. Myers handles both the mysteries—the murder of Nunzio’s daughter’s lover and the murder of Darlene’s father—with panache making them equally captivating.

The lucid explanation of the legal terms and the proceedings without slowing down the story, or boring the reader, is the strongest quality of this book. Few legal thrillers have achieved this feat, in my opinion. The author's vividly descriptive writing breathed life into the judicial proceedings and the courtroom scenes. Even though it's the third book in the Philadelphia Legal series, the author explains every reference to past events. So, it can be read as a standalone.

A Killer’s Alibi by William L. Myers Jr. is my first 5-star read of 2019, and it totally deserves it. A smoothly flowing story, well-developed characters, and most importantly, a nail-biting, thrilling trial- what more can one require from a legal thriller. I will surely check out the rest of the books in this series.

Amazing! Bravo. If you read William L Myers, Jr's first two novels you will love this! If you did not read them, read this anyway because you don't need to read the first two in order to love this book.

Myers has a way of writing a novel that not only keeps you guessing but leaves you having no idea until the bitter end. Since I read Myers first two novels, I knew that there would be surprises in store.

This book, was different. The plot revolves around women. As New York Times Bestselling author, William Lashner wrote, it revolves around father daughter relationships.

Darlene Dowd is doing life in prison for the brutal killing of her sexually abusive father. I thought it was an appropriate time Myers to dive into this issue, as we are seeing sexual exploitation being exposed at the highest echelons of society. The thing is, Mick and his wife Piper believe she is innocent and Piper sets out to prove it.

So, Myers also is exploring the issues of social justice. Now, more than ever the world is seeing our eyes open to the socially marginalized and the justice system's tradition of throwing them away is coming to light.

One of my favorite, Philadelphia Legal characters, is the terrifying but likable Jimmy Nuzio, Philadelphia mob boss. The story begins when he is caught by police, knife in hand over the corpse of his arch nemesis and mob family rival--who happens to be his daughters lover. He gets thrown in jail until his trail and high paid defense lawyer, the series main character, is hired to defend him. With Nunzios tough as nails wife seemingly being the architect of the defense and hold the family together, while Nunzio waits for trail behind bars.

In classic Myers style, throughout the book you are absolutely dumbfounded on how it could possibly end. When it does, it will take your breath away.

I dare you to try and guess the ending of this one.

If you haven't started the Philadelphia Legal series, they really do not need to be read in any order.
You should start with this one, because it is fantastic! Can't wait for the next one.

GNab A Killer's Alibi is the third in a series of Philadelphia Legal thrillers by Wm L. Myers, Jr., but completely stand alone. I was excited to see this story line continue. The protagonists who shine in this legal battle are Mick and his brother Tommy McFarland, the firms investigator, but the whole crew are in and out of the story. And a fine story it is - there are clashes and the promise of war between organized crime families Nunzio, with an established and settled business set-up, and Valiante, the new guys on the block looking to take over the meth and heroin needs in Philadelphia's Southie district. Oh, and the Nunzio daughter is in a relationship with the Valiante son. Messy.

Meanwhile, Mick's wife Piper and fellow lawyer Susan Klein are working an Innocence Case through the firm. Darlene Dowd has served 15 years for the murder of her abusive father, but there is new information pointing to her possible innocence, as well as mishandling of information at the time of the crime that will perhaps qualify her for a new trial. So sad.

William L. Myers is an author I watch for. He always brings an interesting, fast paced story that intrigues.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, William L. Myers, Jr. and Thomas & Mercer in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

This is the 3rd book in the Philadelphia legal series following lawyer Mick McFarland and it’s fast becoming a firm favourite in my house, such terrific page turners, immersive writing and unexpected plotting.
This one was just like that, tense and pacy, with some memorable supporting characters in the mix and a difficult, dangerous case for our main protagonist.
Mob war looms, Mike under pressure from all sides, his wife Piper struggling with her own emotional case and William Myers racks up the tension with every passing chapter so you bolt through the book ignoring all else.
With a perfectly placed twisty finale, thought provoking themes running throughout and the now expected intelligent storytelling A Killer’s Alibi is a genuinely great read.
I thoroughly recommend the entire series.

You would have thought I had won the lottery when I was presented with the opportunity to preview this book. Love this author and loved this book. The double plot line was a bonus. I can guarantee readers will not be disappointed with this one. Now all I want to know is: when can we expect book number 4!?

"A Killer’s Alibi" is the latest legal thriller from lawyer and author, William L. Myers, Jr. Mobster, Jimmy Nunzio is found, covered in blood and holding a bloody knife, a few feet away from his daughter, Christina. She’s nursing her dead lover whose throat has been slashed from one side to the other. It doesn’t take the police more than a nanosecond to surmise what has happened, especially as the recently deceased is the son of Nunzio’s archenemy from another crime family. Criminal defence lawyer, Mick McFarland reluctantly takes the case, expecting his client, who proposes to plead not guilty to murder, to fill him in on the details, or at least provide him with sufficient to mount an arguable defence. But Nunzio provides him with nothing, apart from some veiled threats to Mick’s family if he doesn’t play ball. The closer the trial date looms, the more concerned Mick becomes, especially as the gung-ho prosecutor, who sees his case as a slam dunk, is seeking the death penalty. At the same time, Mick’s wife, Piper is assisting his partner, Susan Klein with another case, which the firm has taken on pro bono as part of its own Innocence Project. Mick’s brother, Tommy, an ex-con who is now the firm’s private investigator, is engaged on both cases and as he unravels the facts, the surprises come in quick succession. Even if you are the most avid reader of court room thrillers, you won’t predict the shocking conclusion.

Despite the increasing number of legal thrillers on the market, usually written by lawyers, there are some that stand out from the crowd. I had the pleasure of reading Myers’ first foray into the genre, "A Criminal Defense" so I suspected I wouldn’t be disappointed with "A Killer’s Alibi". And I was right. Intrigue bites within the first few paragraphs. This book is certainly in the difficult-to-put-down category. Written in present tense, it is almost script-like and easy to read, especially the crisp dialogue. Myers’ own knowledge of law and procedure shines through on practically every page; he skilfully makes even minor hearings sound interesting. As a breather from the otherwise hectic pace, the author describes Mick and Piper’s home life, which, as the saga unfolds, is not irrelevant. As if the story isn’t fast paced enough, once Nunzio’s trial gets under way, Myers puts his foot to the floor and it’s off to the races. I do wonder whether the Innocence Project case is necessary; the link between the two is tenuous, the book is fairly long and the case is sufficiently intriguing to justify a book on its own. But, that minor criticism aside, all in all, the writing, the dialogue and the author’s ability to paint a picture with his words draws the reader right into the court room as the drama unfolds. Hell, you’ll be so engrossed you’ll even wish you were there.

Received a copy from the author for review.

This was an awesome legal thriller and my first. I finished this book quicker than I expected. I loved the writing. The pace was amazing and it felt like I was watching a show on television.

Mick was a phenomenal lawyer! I loved his dedication to his job and solving cases that many believe to be open-shut or lost causes. Mick was an awesome father to Gabby. He was a great friend. Piper did a bang up job with the innocence case. I love how committed she was to finding the truth and helping those wrongly convicted. Mick and Piper are a killer duo. The entire law firm was awesome!

The Nunzio case was insane! I kind of figured out the case from the beginning, but the characters kept throwing me off. I loved how ruthless the Nunzio family is and how they can literally bypass the law. They don't sweat, they don't worry...they just do what they do and stay cool about it. Jimmy was amazing and very secretive which added to the suspense. Both his wife and daughter were awesome as well. They are a badass family.

The Dowd case was just as secretive and insane. I didn't expect who the killer was, but I also had a bit of hope about who the killer was because it made sense. Darlene was a scared girl dealing with a complex situation, but I'm glad things worked out in the end for her.

Overall, this was better than expected and I plan to read books 1 and 2 in this series.

Myers has a way of writing a novel that keeps you guessing until the very last. .

Darlene Dowd is doing life in prison for a murder the main characters believe she did not commit.

The book revolves around a high paid criminal defense law firm. They are working to exonerate a girl serving life in prison for the murder of her sexually abusive father--a murder they believe she did not commit,

On the other side of Philadelphia, they are also representing notorious Philadelphia mob boss Jimmy "Nutzo" Nunzio for the murder of his daughter's mobster lover.

This novel has strong female characters it's their strength and resolve to do what they believe is right that makes this book kick.

It's a page turner that you don't want to miss. The entire house of cards seems doomed, and until the very last you will have no idea the outcome.

Legal thrillers are not my go to read, but I always search out Myers books because they have that element that causes you to read with furry absolutely no idea what will happen next.

An excellent read by a really terrific author. Highly recommended even if thriller books are not your go to genre. It's a fun read that you don't want to miss.

Wow. What a ride! Although this is the third book in the series you don't need to read the others to understand and completely enjoy this one. What I love about this series is that there are common characters in all books, but it isn't dedicated to spotlighting the same 3 or 4 with the others there simply for support. We get to learn more about all of the characters in each installment.

The dual plots were shaped to keep the reader guessing until the end. The writing is succinct yet appropriately descriptive and peppered with legal explanations when necessary. The characters are developed realistically.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this intelligent and suspenseful novel. Now I must wait patiently for the next installment!

Having read and loved the first two books in this series, I was delighted to read A Killer’s Alibi!

First off, I will say it would be helpful to have read the first two books because the characters are interwoven throughout the books. Secondly, just read the books because they are brilliant legal thrillers! 🙂

There are two plots in A Killer’s Alibi, one focusing on Mick McFarland and one focusing on his wife, Piper, as she tries prove the innocence of a woman convicted of killing her father.

Bill Myers is an exceptional plotter. The way he uses misdirection to throw the reader off the scent is brilliant. I always find myself trying to figure out where the story is going, and I am NEVER right. I love that, because it means I am engrossed from start to finish, eager to know how everything pans out in the end.

I liked the thread with Piper trying to prove the innocence of Darlene Dowd. I thought it was really interesting to see how she works, especially considering events in the previous books!

Also, we meet Jimmy Nunzio again, and this time he is found holding the knife over his daughter’s dead lover. Nunzio retains Mick for his defense, and it becomes one of the hardest cases because how can you get a not guilty verdict when the man is a known killer!?

I don’t want to go into any more detail because the joy of reading these books is the figuring out of the various plot points. I always look forward to these because I am always hooked straightaway and I end up devouring them as fast as I can!

A Killer’s Alibi is a thrilling, pacy and thoroughly engaging story, with some excellently shady characters and plenty to keep the reader turning those pages!

Highly recommended!

Mick McFarland gets the client of a lifetime, but not in a good way.

Defense attorney Mick McFarland has made a name for himself as a defendant's best chance, but when reputed crime boss Jimmy "Nutzo" Nunzio hires him with an offer he can't refuse, Mick finds himself trying a case without all the facts; hardly any, in fact. Meanwhile, his wife Piper and legal associate take on a new innocence project; a woman who spent her entire life in prison for the grisly murder of her father.

As facts about each case unfold, lines are crossed like the Walt Whitman bridge, and it's up to Mick and his team to balance the truths of their cases and their clients' entitlement to justice.

What I liked:
William L. Myers, Jr. weaves another tapestry of intrigue as his characters deal with life and death legal matters. The breadcrumbs are expertly scattered throughout the book, resulting in a brilliant twist at the end. In this tale, the devil flashes a convincing and congenial smile.

What I didn't like:
I had a hard time feeling a connection with the main character. I felt like there was too much back story that I should've known when starting to read. I read volume #2 in the series, An Engineered Injustice, but Mick seemed to me as a minor character. Perhaps the character development I sought was found in volume #1, A Criminal Defense, in which Mick is the primary attorney on the case.

Overall, I enjoyed A Killer's Alibi, but not to the same degree as I liked An Engineered Injustice. I gave it a solid three stars and wish more success to William L. Myers, Jr. in his future writing and legal adventures.

I liked this book. The alternating storylines at first kind of was distracting. At first there was Mick's case and than the case that his wife, Piper was working on. I did not really make the connection at first that the story changed between the two cases and therefore, I was trying to figure out the connection between the cases. In fact, I thought that Mick's wife was helping him in the beginning. This is partly my bad but at the same time it showed that the transition to the two storylines was not as smooth. Yet, the further that I got into the book, the clearer the dual storylines got.

I was drawn more towards Piper's case. The main character, Darlene was more relatable. Plus, I really felt for her and her story. So for me the overall story was a bit more one sided. Yet, I thought that Mick; himself was good. He showed his intelligence. Together, I thought that Mick and Piper worked well with each other. They fed off one another's energy.

While, I might not have "loved" this book, I would read another one by this author. I may even go back and start with book one in this series.

A Killer’s Alibi is the third book in the thrilling Philadelphia Legal Series. You do not need to read them in order. I do recommend reading A Criminal Defense and An Engineered Injustice. They are enjoyable reads on their own and together.

This is an excellent legal thriller with great plot lines and realistic characters. As the book unfolds, you’ll be on the edge of your seat till the end. In and out of the courtroom, you’ll never be bogged down with legal terminology. As with the two previous books in the series, this one stands on its own. The reader is engaged throughout the entire book. I like how it all ties together at the end. Myers never leaves you disappointed, only wanting more.

Thank you to William L. Myers Jr., NetGalley and Thomas and Mercers for providing me with an early copy. For this you get an honest review.

P.S. I hope there’s a book four!

I love a good legal thriller and this series is one of my favorites. I absolutely loved the first book, A Criminal Defense but I somehow missed book 2 in the series. I still could not resist grabbing this one off NetGalley when I saw it.

Mick has a tough case in his hands. First, his client is a mobster. Everyone knows Nunzio’s reputation. So how will Mick prove that the mobster is innocent especially when there is evidence to the contrary? Secondly, Nunzio does not want to share the story with his lawyer. I mean, Mick has to defend the guy but he doesn’t even know what really happened. Nunzio makes it clear that he is the puppet master and Mick is his puppet. It was a crazy, twisted case that had me captivated from the first to the last page.

The second case handled by Mick’s wife, Piper, is also equally interesting. Piper is trying to offer Darlene a second chance. She is a young woman convicted of murdering her abusive father. However, Piper first needs to find out whether Darlene is innocent. This case had my stomach in knots. I was curious to find out whether Darlene committed the crime or not? Either way, I was on her side so I really wanted a favorable verdict for her.

Once again, Myers, Jr. created a masterpiece in this legal thriller. I don’t know how he managed to have the two story-lines run concurrently with each being just as captivating.

One thing you need to know about this author is that he doesn’t write your usual kind of legal thrillers. Sure, the courtroom drama is fascinating. In this case, I was curious to find out how everything would work out, as Mick kept saying, what was the ace? The case was so intense and unpredictable. However, Myers, Jr. also has a way of ensuring that each case is memorable by including jaw-dropping twists. In this story, there were two cases and twice, I had to pick my jaw from the floor. The twists were so good that I found myself exclaiming aloud, good thing I was reading the book alone at home. I don’t think I can aptly explain just how good the cases and twists were so just grab the book and find out for yourself.

If you enjoy fast-paced, engrossing legal thrillers with twists that will make your head spin, then you need to read the Philadelphia Legal series by William L. Myers, Jr. Right from the jaw-dropping prologue to the final full stop, I was utterly captivated by the narrative. I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2 of the series.

Well written, twisty and definitely memorable, The Killer’s Alibi was an enjoyable read.

Thanks to the author and TLC Book Tours for the free copy in exchange for my honest review

I’ll start by saying, I’ll pick up anything that has to do with the mafia. Its such a fascinating lifestyle and is it’s own world with it’s own rules. So when I saw that A KILLER’S ALIBI was a legal thriller involving the mafia, I had to pick it up! Despite this being book three in the Philadelphia Legal series, I wasn’t lost at all. In fact, I had no idea this was part of a series, so don’t let that deter you when starting it.

Mick McFarland finds himself sucked into the world of the mob when he has to represent the notorious crime boss Jimmy Nunzio. He was caught with a knife in his hand standing over the dead body of his daughter’s boyfriend. McFarland quickly finds out that the boyfriend was actually part of the rival mob – is a mob war on the horizon?

The Nunzio family is making things difficult for him to build his defense because they aren’t sharing all the information. Having your defense lawyer on a need-to-know basis seems like a bad idea, but McFarland quickly finds himself becoming sucked into the conflict.

The tension builds throughout the book and there are so many questions. How long will the Nunzio family keep Mick in the dark? When is the rival mob going to strike? What’s going to happen in the courtroom? This book had plenty of suspense and kept the action up making this a binge-read. I loved the courtroom scenes and Myers’ experience in the field shines through without it being hard to follow for those of us with no knowledge of the inner workings of the legal system. I would highly recommend this to those looking for a captivating thriller!

Thank you William L. Myers, Jr. and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC of this book.
This is the third book of the Philadelphia Legal Series. The story is a stand alone, although there are some references to things that must have happened in the previous books of the series. This is the first one that I have read but it definitely won't be the last.
Mick McFarland is an attorney who is "hired" by a mob underboss that is charged with the murder of his daughter's boyfriend, a member of a rival mob. He is found holding the blood soaked knife that killed the boyfriend. It seems like an open and shut case for the prosecution because the underboss refuses to tell his own attorney what happened and whether it was self-defense.
In the meantime, Mick's wife and law partner are working on a case of a young woman who was charged and convicted of killing her abusive father. They are trying to get her a new trial to prove that she is innocent.
Throughout both story lines of this book, things are not always what they seem. Both stories involve father/daughter dynamics. The author did a great job of building the suspense and then giving little hints of what might be coming. But there are things going on behind the scenes that you never see coming. It isn't until almost the end of the book that we find out what is really going on in both of the story lines.
I loved that the author was able to make even some of the "bad guys" likable.
