The first collection of the comic strip "Curbside," which has been running in the gay and alternative presses since 1991. This book was made possible by a grant from the Xeric Foundation. The sequel, Curbside Boys, was published in 2002 by the award-winning Cleis Press, of San Francisco.
Rob Kirby's solo books include Curbside and Curbside Boys. His anthologies include two volumes of The Book of Boy Trouble; 3 issues of the Ignatz-nominated series THREE; the Ignatz Award-winning QU33R; What's Your Sign, Girl?, & The Shirley Jackson Project. His graphic memoir, Marry Me a Little, is now available from Graphic Mundi/PSU Press.
My first book, published with the Xeric Grant in 1998, is comprised of the bulk of the first 4 or 5 years of my self-syndicated biweekly comic strip "Curbside," which runs in gay and alternative papers around the country to this very day (though in very few now). The book is now out of print and quite expensive (sells for a hundred bucks and up on Amazon and other online used book sellers, jeez). I think it holds up pretty well, but I was still learning the language of comics as I drew these. I hadn't as many pretentions then and so much of it comes across as genuine but a little dorky.
I love this book! I read it way back when, and at the time it felt really current. Now it feels nostalgic (not dated)--it really held up over time. It was such a fun read, really addictive and sweet!
